President Bola Tinubu has stirred attention after mistakenly referring to himself as a governor seeking a second term during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general election in Abuja on Wednesday.

Tinubu made the remark while acknowledging the Director-General of the presidential campaign council, describing the campaign as one that would bring him back as “Governor Bola Tinubu” for a second term.

“In recognition of the director general of the presidential campaign council that will bring Governor Bola Tinubu back for second time,” the president said.

The remark appeared to be a slip of the tongue, as Tinubu is currently Nigeria’s president and is seeking re-election in 2027, rather than a return to the Lagos State Government House.

Tinubu served as governor of Lagos State for two consecutive terms, from 1999 to 2007, before becoming president in May 2023.

His latest verbal slip has drawn comparisons with several controversial remarks he made during campaign appearances ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

During the 2023 campaign, Tinubu once urged Nigerians to vote for “PDAPC,” a verbal mix-up involving the names of political parties. On another occasion, he used the phrase “A town hall, different from balablu-blu-bulaba,” which subsequently attracted public attention.

The Wednesday incident occurred as the APC began preparations for the 2027 presidential election with the inauguration of its campaign council, a key step in organising the party’s re-election campaign.

Tinubu’s re-election bid is expected to be a major feature of Nigeria’s political activities as parties and their candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
