Edo State House of Assembly Welcomes New Leadership Following Speaker’s Resignation
The Edo State House of Assembly has ushered in a new era of leadership after the resignation of former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku. On Monday, the lawmaker representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, Yekini Idiaye, was sworn in as the new Speaker of the state legislature. The transition followed the submission of Agbebaku’s resignation letter, which was presented during a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu.
Following the announcement of Agbebaku’s resignation, the member representing Esan South East Constituency, Sunday Ojiezele, nominated Idiaye for the position of Speaker. The nomination was seconded by the member representing Owan East Constituency, Eric Okaka. The Clerk of the House then administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who immediately assumed leadership of the Assembly.
In addition to Idiaye’s election, the House also approved changes to the leadership of the majority caucus. The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) submitted a letter nominating Ojiezele as the new Majority Leader. Meanwhile, Ojie Inegbebor, representing the Igueben Constituency, was named Deputy Majority Leader.

The Assembly further considered a letter from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which proposed Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader.
These developments mark a significant shift in the leadership structure of the Edo State House of Assembly, signaling the beginning of a new chapter under the Eighth Assembly. The transition follows a period of heightened tension within the legislature, which culminated in moves to impeach the former Speaker.
Naija News reports that the new leadership structure has been formally established, with Idiaye now at the helm of the state’s legislative affairs.
