The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has raised serious concerns about his safety, alleging that he may not be alive to contest the upcoming poll due to what he described as systematic frustration of his activities and targeting of opposition figures by the government.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, which was shared on social media on Wednesday.
I Might Not Even Be Alive
Responding to a question on whether there was a possibility he might not be a candidate in 2027, Obi stated bluntly: “Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.”

The former Anambra State governor, however, clarified that he was not making a direct accusation but rather describing what he experiences daily in the form of obstruction. “It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day. Because you do things that you think would be normal—it is not normal anymore. They won’t come directly and say, ‘Oh, we’re doing this,’ but you can see their hand in virtually everything,” he said.
Allegations of Targeting Opposition Figures
Asked whether the government was attacking him personally, Obi said the alleged treatment extended to members of the opposition generally. “They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all,” he stated.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate cited an incident at an airport where he claimed officials locked his car despite other vehicles being parked in the same area. He said when he identified himself, the official in charge dismissed him, and when he pointed to other cars nearby, he noticed officials whispering among themselves as though questioning who he was.
Fear Spreads Among Associates
Obi further alleged that some people now avoid publicly associating with him for fear of becoming targets themselves. “And I see people I know at the airport, they will not greet me because they are fearing that if they greet me…” he said.
He also claimed that some supporters had discouraged him from attending family events. “And I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,'” Obi revealed.
Obi’s Motivation Remains Unchanged
Despite what he describes as growing political hostility, Obi maintained that his motivation remains unchanged. “I’m not desperate to be President of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria work,” he said, arguing that the country’s deepest challenge is increasing division and a growing culture of fear.
The former governor emphasized that his commitment to the Nigerian project remains steadfast, even as he faces what he perceives as significant obstacles in his political journey.
Government Yet to Respond
Obi did not provide evidence to support his allegations during the interview, and the Federal Government had yet to respond to his claims as of the time of filing this report. His comments come amid increased political activities ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties intensifying consultations and preparations for the polls.
Obi’s statements have sparked widespread reactions across the country, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the state of political freedom and safety of opposition figures. Political observers are closely watching to see whether the government will respond to these allegations or if the matter will escalate further in the coming days.
As the 2027 election approaches, the political landscape continues to heat up, with opposition figures increasingly vocal about what they perceive as intimidation and obstruction.
Ejes Gist News understands that the situation has raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of those who choose to challenge the status quo.
Obi remains resolute in his determination to see Nigeria work, even as he acknowledges the personal risks involved in his political journey. The coming weeks are expected to bring more clarity as the government’s response to these serious allegations becomes known.
