Ambassador Charles Omini, the Special Envoy to West Africa for the International Human Rights Protection Service (IHRPS) Forum, has urged governments at all levels in Nigeria to take immediate action against the rising tide of landlord exploitation and arbitrary rent hikes across the nation.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Omini revealed that his office has been inundated with public grievances, receiving more than 38,000 petitions from tenants over the past six months. According to the envoy, these complaints highlight widespread landlord oppression, intimidation, and the harassment of tenants nationwide.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation as a pressing socio-economic crisis, Omini called upon the Federal Government to implement comprehensive policies and legal frameworks to protect tenant rights and put a stop to unlawful practices by property owners.

Issuing a stern warning to abusive landlords, the envoy cautioned that anyone who takes the law into their own hands or victimizes tenants will face the full weight of the law and the severe consequences of their actions.
