52 Prominent Nigerians Escape Death as Aircraft Skids Off Runway at Lagos Airport

A potentially disastrous incident was averted on Saturday, May 10, when an Xejet Airlines aircraft carrying 52 passengers and two crew members skidded off the runway at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos.

The E145 aircraft, which departed from Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, landed on Runway 18L before veering off into the grass verge near B5 Aircraft.

 

Emergency responders, including fire and rescue teams, were quickly deployed to the scene to assist in evacuating the passengers. The runway was temporarily closed to traffic as a result of the incident.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed the incident and dispatched a team of investigators to the site.

 

This incident comes just three weeks after a similar incident involving a Dana aircraft at the same airport, which led to the suspension of operations by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and an ongoing probe.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in this latest incident, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the skid.
