Additionally, the convict’s possessions, including a 2017 black Camry, a Samsung S23, an Apple iPhone 13, and an HP EliteBook, were to be forfeited to the government. Speaking on Wednesday, June 26, in Kano during a condolence visit from a Federal Government delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, following the death of his mother-in-law, Hajiya Maryam Abubakar, Shettima praised Tinubu’s positive actions toward the region.

Meet Five Young Players Shining at Euro 2024

As the Euro 2024 group stage wrapped up on Wednesday, the 16 remaining teams are gearing up for the knockout rounds. The tournament has so far been a stage for young talents to dazzle under the European spotlight. Here’s a look at five standout players aged 21 and under.

    Nico Williams (Spain)

Spain’s performances in the group stage have made them strong contenders for the title, with 21-year-old Nico Williams catching everyone’s eye. Turning 22 just two days before the final in Berlin, Williams has had a remarkable year. After helping Athletic Bilbao secure their first Copa del Rey in 40 years, he has proven his worth on the international stage. His constant attacking threat was particularly evident in Spain’s 1-0 victory over Italy, where he earned the player of the match award. After the match, Williams received a personal congratulation from the Spanish King, sharing with the media, “I’ve dreamed of moments like this all my childhood.”

    Jamal Musiala (Germany)

Jamal Musiala, also 21, has been Germany’s key attacking force, scoring in each of their first two games as they topped Group A. After being the lone bright spot in Germany’s disappointing 2022 World Cup, Musiala has evolved into a complete player, adding goalscoring to his creative game. Despite an inconsistent season at Bayern Munich, he has formed a formidable partnership with fellow 21-year-old Florian Wirtz. His man-of-the-match display in the 5-1 thrashing of Scotland showcased his potential. Musiala humbly remarked, “You could say that, yes,” when asked if it was his best performance to date, signaling a warning to other teams.

    Jude Bellingham (England)

At just 20, Jude Bellingham has already become a pivotal player for England since his breakout performance at the 2022 World Cup. The sole scorer in England’s only win of the tournament so far, Bellingham entered Euro 2024 fresh from winning La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid. Alongside Harry Kane and Phil Foden, Bellingham’s role will be crucial if England are to end their long run of major tournament disappointments.

    Arda Guler (Turkey)

Nineteen-year-old Arda Guler has carried his domestic form into the Euros, having finished the La Liga season on a high with Real Madrid, scoring five goals in his last five games. He made an immediate impact at the tournament, scoring a stunning long-range goal to secure a 2-1 win against Georgia in Turkey’s opener. This made him the youngest player to score on their Euros debut, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s record. Guler’s achievement is a fitting tribute as Ronaldo, now 39, likely plays his final Euros, passing the torch to the next generation.

    Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal made history by becoming the youngest player ever to appear in the Euros at 16 years and 338 days. He also set the record for the youngest player to provide an assist in the tournament during Spain’s 3-0 victory over Croatia. Yamal impressed against Italy and started from the bench in the final group game against Albania as Spain secured three wins out of three. Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, mentioned he is managing Yamal’s playing time to protect the young talent, who he believes is “touched by God’s magic wand

  • Stop Giving Visibility To Youths Insulting Elders – Obi Cubana Appeals To Bloggers

Billionaire businessman, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana has appealed to bloggers to stop giving visibility to youths that are disrespecting elders on social media.

This is coming after the clash between controversial activist, Verydarkman and Paulo Okoye.

The activist had called out Iyabo Ojo, claiming she was never invited to Davido’s main wedding, but to his after-party.

Paulo Okoye had criticized him for the remark, which thus prompted Verydarkman to shift his attack to Paulo.

Following this, Obi Cubana took to his Instagram page to call on blogs to desist from giving attention to youths who are disrespecting elders.

According to him, it would only be enabling them and spur them when such attention is being given.

What is the Dollar to Naira Exchange rate at the black market also known as the parallel market (Aboki fx)?

Many Nigerians, especially those engaged in foreign trade, travel, and investment, have always been very interested in and concerned about the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Nigerian naira. The parallel market, also known as the black market or Aboki FX, often offers a different rate from the official Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rates. For many, this is a critical source of foreign exchange.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates

Understanding the factors that influence the dollar to naira exchange rate in the black market can help anticipate changes and make better financial decisions.

    Economic Policies

Government policies significantly impact exchange rates. Decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and foreign exchange regulations by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directly affect the naira’s value. For instance, when the CBN adjusts policies to manage inflation or stabilize the naira, it impacts the exchange rate.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus the demand for it plays a crucial role. When foreign currency is scarce or demand is high, the naira depreciates, leading to higher exchange rates. Conversely, an abundant supply of dollars can lead to lower rates.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate as investors move towards safer assets. Stability and positive political developments, on the other hand, can strengthen the naira.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as shifts in oil prices (a major export for Nigeria), international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. For example, a significant drop in oil prices can negatively impact Nigeria’s economy and the naira.

Comparing Official and Black Market Rates

There is a significant disparity between official and black market rates. The black market offers higher rates, but with substantial risks such as fraud and legal issues. The CBN advises using official channels to avoid these risks. Official rates are stable and reliable, making them suitable for the majority of transactions.

Pounds and Euro to Naira Exchange Rates

For those dealing with currencies other than the US dollar, here are the latest rates:

    Pounds to Naira (CBN Rates)

    • Buying Rate: ₦1,892
    • Selling Rate: ₦1,905

Euro to Naira (Black Market Rates)

    • Buying Rate: ₦1,615
    • Selling Rate: ₦1,630

These rates are also subject to market conditions and economic policies.

Geegpay and Grey: online Exchange Platforms

Digital platforms like Geegpay and Grey offer convenient and secure options for currency exchange, providing competitive rates.

    Geegpay Dollar to Naira Rates

    • EUR (€): Buying at ₦1,690.03, Selling at ₦1,695.55
    • GBP (£): Buying at ₦1,950, Selling at ₦1,965
    • USD ($): Buying at ₦1,500, Selling at ₦1,550

    Grey Dollar to Naira Rates

    • EUR (€): Buying at ₦1,640.03, Selling at ₦1,719
    • GBP (£): Buying at ₦1,902, Selling at ₦2,015
    • USD ($): Buying at ₦1,460, Selling at ₦1,500

These platforms have gained popularity due to their ease of use, transparency, and security, making them viable alternatives to traditional methods.

Why the Disparity Between Official and Black Market Rates?

The disparity between the official CBN rates and the black market rates is influenced by several factors:

    1. Supply and Demand: The availability of foreign currency in the official market is often limited, leading individuals and businesses to seek forex in the black market where demand drives up prices.
    2. Regulatory Restrictions: The CBN imposes restrictions on the amount of forex available for personal and business use, making it difficult for many to meet their needs through official channels.
    3. Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices, inflation, and economic policies can create uncertainty, prompting people to turn to the parallel market for more favorable rates.

Impact of Black Market Rates on the Economy

The high exchange rates in the black market can have various implications for the Nigerian economy:

    • Inflation: Higher costs for imported goods can drive up prices locally, contributing to inflation.
    • Investment: Unfavorable exchange rates can deter foreign investment as investors seek more stable economic environments.
    • Trade: Exporters may benefit from higher naira values per dollar, while importers face increased costs, potentially leading to trade imbalances.

How to use the parallel market

For those needing to engage in forex transactions through the black market, safety and caution are paramount. Here are some tips:

    1. Verify Rates: Always check the latest rates from reliable sources like Aboki FX to ensure you get the best deal.
    2. Deal with Reputable Dealers: Engage with well-known and trusted Bureau De Change operators to avoid scams.
    3. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of economic news and CBN policies that could affect exchange rates.

Despite intervention from President Bola Tinubu, the conflict intensified following Fubara appointment of Caretaker Committee Chairmen to replace pro-Wike Local Government Chairmen.

  • Innocent Bricklayer Released After Spending 24 Years In Jail Shares Ordeal

A 50-year-old bricklayer who spent 24 years in prison for a crime he did not commit has shared his ordeal after he was released.

Lukman Adeyemi was just 26 years old when he accompanied a friend who had been invited by police to the police station.

His act of loyalty towards his friend led to him being detained. He ended up spending 24 years in jail and was only freed on June 14, 2024.

He spent nine years in pre-trial detention, followed by an unbearable 15 years on death row.

Narrating how he was detained, he explained that when he got to the station with his friend, during interrogations by SARS Police officers, he endured severe physical and psychological torment, leading to coerced confessions for crimes he knew nothing about.

Sharing his story with Vanguard, he said: “I am Lukman Adeyemi, a native of Iwerele, Iwajowa Local Government, Oyo State. I am a Bricklayer by profession. I was 26 years old when I had this problem.

“In August 2000, after returning home from work with a friend living with me, Ismaila Lasisi, we were told that the Police came to look for Ismaila and he was asked to report himself in the station.

“I immediately decided to follow him to the station, lo and behold I was arrested and detained along with him. I was tortured to the point of death over a crime I knew nothing about, right from the police station.

“I had a close shave with the death over a murder of a woman who was hired by some ex-friends of Ismaila Lasisi to fetch water for them at the construction site. The woman left home in the morning and she never returned home.

“Ismaila Lasisi once lived with them. He begged to come and live with me after he had a misunderstanding with these people in March. I knew these people from a far distance. Our paths never crossed in life for anything. This was how I was charged to court along with these people over an offence I never had any knowledge of.

“In 2009 we were sentenced to death. We filed separate appeals but the appeal failed to the Supreme Court.

“My story of innocence to whoever cared to listen fell on deaf ears, with many questioning, ‘If you’re not one of them, why mention your name?’ ‘If truly you are innocent why can’t court free you?’

“I felt abandoned by truth itself. I spent 24 years behind bars like 24 hours, a sleepless night that lasted for two decades.

“In June 2023 one of the officers of the Correctional Service, Deputy Superintendent of Correctional (DSC) AbdulKareem Awesu introduced my case to a Pastor and I spoke with him on phone.

“On 17th July 2023, a group Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation, CJMR, led by Pastor Hezekiah Olujobi visited us at the Ibara Correctional Service where they listened to all of us including the culprits who exonerated us. The organization went with all our judgement and shed light on our innocence.

“June 14, 2024, shall remain evergreen and memorable day in my life. Light shone upon me, rain fell on my head for the first time and I saw the moon for the first time.

“I never knew I could pay for the sin of another man. How could I have committed an offense and still boldly walk into a police station to report myself?

“I am grateful that the organization Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation intervened on my behalf, a beacon of hope in a sea of despair. Her belief in my innocence reignited the flame of justice within me, propelling me toward the possibility of redemption.”

Pastor Hezekiah Deboboye Olujobi the Executive Director of Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation, CJMR, an NGO based in Ibadan shed light on the innocence of Lukman Adeyemi and Ismaila Lasisi.

He said: “Our attention was drawn to the complaints of these two people on their claim of innocence by the Welfare Officer DCP Awesu, who invited us to come and help these people assuring us of their innocence and the effort made through the legal process without justice.

“We came down to Ibara Custodial Centre,  Abeokuta, to hear from them. The two perpetrators confided in us that truly, they were the ones who committed the crime and that the two people were totally innocent of the crime. We adjusted our seats to hear them very well.

“It was a long drilling of questions on their parts. But yet they insisted on their innocence. What they said carried no weight in my ears until I read through the judgement that convicted them.  We obtained their judgements from both the trial court and the Supreme Court for our review. We noticed the presentation of the state before the appellate court could never allow the court to shift ground.”

Pastor Olujobi said he observed that “while reading through their separate judgements, it was a contradiction.”

Narrating how the release of both innocent suspects was facilitated, Pastor Olujobi said: “With all the analysis and the evidence in the record, we forwarded our findings to the office of the Attorney-General of Ogun State and the Committee for the Board of Prerogative of Mercy and they considered our appeal.

“It’s not about their story, it is about the fact that the record corroborated their story.”

Currently, Lukman Adeyemi and Ismaila Lasisi are at the CJMR Halfway Home for recovery and reintegration process.

Breaking News: Sokoto Assembly Passes Controversial Bill to Strip Sultan’s Powers, Details Emerge

Tension as Sokoto Assembly Passes Bill to Strip Sultan’s Power.

The Sokoto State House of Assembly has swiftly moved through the first and second readings of a bill set to significantly reduce the authority of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III. This development has sparked tension across the state, given the Sultan’s traditional and religious significance.

Under the proposed Sokoto Emirate Council Amendment Bill, the Sultan would lose the power to unilaterally appoint kingmakers and district heads, a role he has held for years. Instead, these appointments would require state government approval, marking a substantial shift in the region’s traditional power dynamics.

The urgency of the bill’s progression has not gone unnoticed. Just two days prior, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) raised alarms about an alleged plot by Governor Ahmed Aliyu to depose the Sultan. Professor Isiaq Akintola, MURIC’s executive director, voiced grave concerns over the state’s intentions, especially in light of the recent deposition of five monarchs in Kano State.

“The Sultan’s role is not confined to Sokoto alone; he is a spiritual leader for all Muslims in Nigeria,” Akintola emphasized, highlighting the broader implications of the bill.

Adding to the tension, Governor Aliyu recently deposed 15 traditional rulers for various offenses, a move that has only intensified the scrutiny on his administration’s actions. Vice President Kashim Shettima has also weighed in, cautioning against any attempts to undermine the Sultan’s position. He stressed the importance of preserving the integrity of the institution.

In response to the allegations, the state government has denied any plans to depose the Sultan, asserting that the legislative changes do not alter the fundamental structure of the traditional leadership.

The Sultan of Sokoto, known for his outspoken views on regional security issues, recently stated that it could take decades to eradicate banditry in the northwest. He called for a united front in combating the menace, reaffirming the commitment of traditional rulers to support this fight.

As the bill awaits its final reading, all eyes are on the Sokoto State House of Assembly to see how this legislative drama will unfold and what it will mean for the region’s future governance.

Official rates provide stability and reliability, making them safer for most transactions.
