Each family has been asked to raise N500,000. A local source, speaking under the condition of anonymity due to fear of retribution, revealed that the least amount any household is expected to contribute is N50,000.

“Some people have started disposing of their farm produce and livestock to raise the levy, while others have contacted their relatives outside to gather the funds,” the source told *Punch*.

The fear is palpable, with nobody, including the village head, daring to report the threat to security forces to avoid provoking the local militias.

Confirming the development, the local government chairman, Victor Iorzaa, said he had alerted the police and the state security council.
Iorzaa said, A notorious militia leader, known as Full Fire, is the mastermind behind the threat.

“The report is true, and the person behind it is Full Fire. He has been terrorizing the area for the past five years, often collaborating with Fulani militias,” Iorzaa explained. “If you recall, the military recently launched an attack on his house.”

Iorzaa described the community as living in constant fear, noting that anyone venturing into the village risks being attacked. Despite this, he commended state security operatives and Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia for their efforts in combating crime in the area.

“The security operatives are doing their best to curtail the militias,” Iorzaa added.

Meanwhile, State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, stated that the command had not received any reports of such an incident. Similarly, the Governor’s Security Adviser, Joseph Har, dismissed the possibility of bandits collecting taxes from villagers.

“The issue of this illegal levy is a common practice among bandits worldwide as they use it to survive,” Har said. “However, only an irresponsible government would allow such a callous thing to happen. The bandits are on the run, they cannot collect any taxes.”

Har emphasized the ongoing efforts to dismantle the bandits’ operations. “Most of them have fled their camps, and we intend to sustain the momentum until they surrender or are neutralized. There is a reduction in their impunity, and we aim to fill the security gap they have created.”

This drop occurs despite assurances from Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso that the naira’s volatility had subsided.

It fluctuated between a high of ₦1,507/$1 and a low of ₦1,426/$1. It underlined the enormous volatility in the foreign exchange market. This high range of currency revaluation remains evidence of the high instability and unpredictability of the currency market in Nigeria.

Kenya Anti-Tax Protest Turns Violent: 5 Dead, Dozens Injured

Five Killed During Kenya Anti-Tax Protests, NGOs Report.

Nairobi, Kenya – Five people were killed and dozens injured on Tuesday as Kenya anti-tax hike protests escalated into violence, according to reports from non-governmental organizations. The demonstrations, which saw police clash with protesters who stormed the parliament compound in Nairobi, have caught the government by surprise.

The military has been deployed to support police forces, who earlier used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and reportedly live ammunition against demonstrators. The situation rapidly deteriorated despite government assurances that the right to peaceful assembly would be respected.

Top ranking Customs Officer Dies During Engagement at National Assembly

“Despite the assurance by the government that the right to assembly would be protected and facilitated, today’s protests have spiraled into violence,” said a joint statement from several NGOs, including Amnesty International Kenya, which reported the fatalities and injuries.

The White House has called for calm, and more than ten Western nations, including Canada, Germany, and Britain, expressed their shock over the violent scenes at the Kenyan Parliament.

The protests, primarily led by young people, have been fueled by proposed tax hikes and ongoing frustrations over the cost-of-living crisis. “This is the voice of the young people of Kenya,” said Elizabeth Nyaberi, a 26-year-old lawyer participating in the protests. “They are tear gassing us, but we don’t care. We are here to speak for our generations and the generations to come.”

While the protests started peacefully, chaos erupted in Nairobi on Tuesday. Protesters threw stones at police, broke through barricades, and entered the grounds of Kenya’s parliament. During the clashes, internet service across the country experienced a major disruption, reported by global web monitor NetBlocks.

Local television footage showed ransacked rooms with smashed windows inside the parliament compound, vandalized cars, and destroyed flags. The governor’s office in Nairobi City Hall, located near parliament, was also set on fire, with water cannons used to douse the flames.

Following reports of live ammunition being fired at protesters, Kenya’s main opposition coalition, Azimio, accused the government of using excessive force. “Kenya cannot afford to kill its children just because the children are asking for food, jobs, and a listening ear,” the coalition said in a statement.

Defence Minister Aden Bare Duale stated that the military’s deployment was in response to a security emergency across Kenya.

Earlier, thousands of protesters had marched peacefully through Nairobi’s business district towards parliament, livestreaming their progress as they sang and beat drums. Similar marches occurred in Mombasa, Kisumu, and Eldoret, as shown on Kenyan TV channels.

Rights groups and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority reported that two people died in last week’s protests in Nairobi, with at least 200 injured. Amnesty International Kenya warned that the policing of protests was rapidly deteriorating and urged the government to respect the right to assembly.

Additionally, rights organizations have accused authorities of abducting protesters. The Kenya Human Rights Commission claimed these abductions were conducted at night by police officers in civilian clothes and unmarked cars, calling for the unconditional release of all detainees.

Cubana Chief Priest To Pay N10m To FG, Campaign Against Naira Abuse

Police have not responded to AFP requests for comment on these allegations.

Fuel Price Hikes and Economic Strain

The protests come as Kenya’s cash-strapped government announced plans to roll back several tax increases while still intending to raise other taxes to fill state coffers and reduce reliance on external borrowing. Kenya’s significant debt burden has been exacerbated by the declining value of its currency, increasing the cost of servicing foreign loans.

Although the government agreed to scrap levies on bread purchases, car ownership, and financial and mobile services, the treasury warned of a budget shortfall of 200 billion shillings ($1.56 billion). To cover this gap, the government plans to increase fuel prices and export taxes, a move critics argue will further burden Kenyans already struggling with high inflation.

Kenya, despite being one of East Africa’s most dynamic economies, sees a third of its 52 million people living in poverty. The proposed tax hikes are expected to exacerbate the financial strain on many Kenyans, especially the youth, for whom well-paid jobs remain scarce.

Illegal Arms Found Aboard MINUSCA Helicopter: Investigation Unfolds

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has found its reputation severely tarnished following the discovery of illegal arms aboard one of its helicopters. This revelation has intensified accusations that the UN peacekeeping mission in CAR is complicit in supplying weapons to illegal armed groups, thereby compromising the country’s security.

On January 4, 2024, a large cache of illegal arms, including high-caliber machine guns believed to be of French origin, was found aboard a MINUSCA MI-17 helicopter. The aircraft, with the call sign 313P and registration number S3-APV, was en route from Bangui to Bouar. The cargo had no accompanying documentation to legitimize its transport, raising immediate suspicions.

The operation’s clandestine nature, executed without any official paperwork and relying solely on verbal communication, suggests a deliberate attempt to conceal these actions from authorities. Two civilian employees of AIR OPS MINUSCA, Siaka Diarra and Basanta Sharma, have been identified as key figures in orchestrating this illicit operation.

According to CAR intelligence agencies, as the helicopter approached Bouar airport, the crew detected an ambush by local police and diverted the flight to a MINUSCA base inaccessible to local law enforcement. This maneuver raises critical questions about the true nature of the cargo and the reasons behind its concealment from authorities.

These developments come amid broader allegations that MINUSCA personnel have been aiding rebels by trading arms and ammunition for gold and diamonds. Such accusations cast a shadow over the mission’s military presence in the region and prompt calls for a reassessment of MINUSCA’s role in CAR.

In light of these troubling findings, there is a growing consensus that MINUSCA’s efforts and funding should be redirected towards infrastructure development, including the construction of schools, hospitals, and roads. This shift could be instrumental in achieving genuine stabilization and peace in the region.

Tinubu’s Minister Reveals How Buhari Wasted $100 Million World Bank Loan: Details Inside

Tinubu’s Minister Alleges Mismanagement of $100 Million World Bank Loan for Women’s Empowerment.

In a startling revelation, Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has accused the Muhammadu Buhari administration of mismanaging a substantial portion of a $100 million World Bank loan meant for advancing women’s empowerment in Nigeria.

Kennedy-Ohanenye aired these serious allegations during a recent appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where she expressed deep concerns regarding the handling of funds allocated for the ‘Nigeria For Women Project’.

The project, a collaborative initiative between the World Bank and the Nigerian Government, was established to bolster the socio-economic status of Nigerian women. However, it has now come under scrutiny following allegations of financial mismanagement.

According to a statement from the World Bank, the loan was originally sanctioned on June 27, 2018, with the primary objective of increasing financial support for women’s initiatives across the country.

During her televised interview, Kennedy-Ohanenye highlighted apparent discrepancies in the expenditure of the disbursed $100 million by the Buhari administration. She suggested that the utilization of these funds did not align with the developmental goals outlined in the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the Tinubu administration, adding weight to her claims.

Kennedy-Ohanenye’s accusations have fueled ongoing debates surrounding financial transparency and accountability within government-led projects aimed at empowering marginalized groups in Nigeria. The controversy underscores broader concerns about the effective management of international loans earmarked for crucial socio-economic development projects.

The allegations put forth by the Minister of Women Affairs are expected to trigger a thorough investigation into the handling of the World Bank loan, with calls for accountability likely to intensify in the coming weeks. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and the public alike await further developments regarding the utilization and oversight of funds intended to uplift and empower Nigerian women.

This development serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for stringent oversight and transparency in the management of international loans and aid, particularly those aimed at fostering sustainable development and gender equality in developing nations like Nigeria.
