    Keyamo Reacts as Air France Abandons Abuja-Bound Nigerian Passengers in Chad

    In a surprising turn of events, the Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has voiced his concerns over the abandonment of Nigerian passengers in Chad by Air France.

    The passengers, who boarded an Air France flight from Paris to Abuja, found themselves stranded in Chad following an unexpected disruption. A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) shows the stranded passengers expressing their frustration and confusion over the situation.

    The flight, which had initially made a stop in Chad to drop off some passengers, did not continue to its final destination, leaving the Nigerians onboard without any clear direction.

    Minister Keyamo, addressing the issue on his official Twitter account, stated: “It has come to my attention that some Nigerians on an Air France flight from Paris to Abuja are presently stranded in Chad, from where the flight earlier dropped some passengers.”

    In response to the incident, Keyamo has instructed the Consumer Protection Department of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to engage with Air France urgently to seek a resolution. “I have immediately directed the Consumer Protection Department of NCAA to swing into action and engage Air France. We shall inform everyone of the outcome soon,” he assured.

    Additionally, the minister called on Air France’s Nigerian branch to provide a swift and transparent update on the status of the stranded passengers and the steps being taken to assist them.

    As this situation unfolds, the affected passengers and their families await a resolution, hoping for a prompt response from Air France and relevant authorities. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

    Maduka University Enugu has announced the registration for admission for the 2024/2025 academic session.

    The university has also released its fee structure for the new academic year, which offers a range of programmes across various schools.

    The announcement follows the recent release of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
    Our cut-off mark is the minimum approved by JAMB for 2024/2025 academic session.

    Prospective students can apply for admission into Maduka University’s undergraduate programs in the Schools of Business and Social Sciences, Computing and Engineering, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, and Law.

    The university’s fee structure is designed to be at quality and affordability in mind.

    Nigerian Army, Air Force, 26 other Agencies risk Disconnection Over Unpaid Bills (Full List)

    The Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, and 25 other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are at risk of disconnection due to unpaid electricity bills.

    According to a statement obtained by Ejes Gist News, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a warning to the 27 MDAs on Saturday, threatening to disconnect their power supply by Monday, June 3, if they fail to settle their debts.

    The notice from AEDC also identified the Kogi State Government and Niger State Government among the defaulters.

    “This is to inform the general public that AEDC will disconnect all customers with outstanding electricity bills on June 3, 2024. Timely payment of electricity bills is crucial for the continued operation and enhancement of AEDC’s infrastructure, ensuring we can deliver efficient and reliable service to our community,” the notice reads.

    Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, told newsmen on Saturday in Awka that the driver fled the scene after the incident.

    On Friday night, along the Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra, a driver struck and fatally injured a female pedestrian.

    This was confirmed by the state Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, told newsmen on Saturday in Awka that the driver fled the scene after the incident.

    Irelewuyi said that the likely cause of the accident was speeding. He reported that the crash involved an unidentified driver of a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with no registration number, en route to Upper Iweke, Onitsha.

    “According to an eyewitness report, the driver of the vehicle, who was speeding, rammed into a female adult pedestrian and zoomed off.

    “FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene and took the victim to Toronto Mortuary after the doctor confirmed her death,” he said.

    He further cautioned motorists about speeding, especially during the rainy season.

    Irelewuyi urged them to ensure they adhered to specified speed limits.

    NLC Strike Won’t Affect Ongoing WAEC Exams.

    The Branch Controller (Ekiti) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, has assured that the nationwide strike set to begin on Monday will not interfere with the ongoing examinations across the country.

    In a letter to principals and school proprietors in Ekiti State titled “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC” with reference number EK/BC/SC/EXAM/07/Vol.1/89, Lawson clarified that the WAEC exams would proceed as scheduled.

    “The attention of Management has been drawn to a notice of the Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC effective Monday, 3rd June 2024. Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled,” the letter stated.

    She emphasized that while the examination body shares the concerns of the unions, it is crucial that students are not disadvantaged by missing the ongoing examinations in Nigeria and other West African states.

    “As much as we share the concerns of the unions and the generality of Nigerians, the WASSCE SC is ongoing across the member countries of WAEC, and the Nigerian child should not be put at a disadvantage by missing the exam.

    “For this reason, WAEC will conduct the exam, and school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public should please take note and make adequate arrangements for their candidates to sit the exam.

    “Kindly be guided accordingly,” the letter concluded.

    The Gombe State Police Command has paraded a 13-year-old boy and two other suspects, Usman Husseini (18) and Mohammed Yaya (45), for allegedly assaulting minors in different incidents.

    According to ASP Buhari Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer, the 13-year-old suspect assaulted an 8-year-old girl in Akko Local Government Area, while Husseini allegedly engaged in inappropriate conduct with a 4-year-old girl in Hammadu-kafi quarters, Gombe. Yaya is accused of similar misconduct involving a 10-year-old girl in Tumu Akko Local Government Area on two separate occasions.

    A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Joe Igbokwe, has slammed Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu for what he perceives as disrespectful behaviour towards the new national anthem.

    Yesufu, known for her activism, refused to sing the national anthem “Nigeria we hail thee” at an event, opting to sit down while others stood up to honor the anthem.

    In a video she posted on X on Friday, the co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls advocacy group, could be seen seen sitting while the new national anthem was being recited.

    Captioning the video, she wrote: “#NotMyNationalAnthem.”

    Reacting, on his Facebook page on Saturday Igbokwe criticized Yesufu’s behavior as “nonsensical” and warned that her actions may harm her and her family.

    He wrote, “Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behaviour will take her to.

    “She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue.”

    President Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on Wednesday, restoring ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ as the national anthem.

    First Bank Moves to Recover ₦40 Billion Stolen by Employee. 

    First Bank of Nigeria has initiated legal proceedings to recover substantial funds allegedly embezzled by an employee.

    The bank, with a market capitalization of ₦829 billion, reported the incident to the Nigerian Police Force on March 25, 2024, and obtained multiple court orders to freeze accounts linked to the stolen funds.

    According to Tech Cabal, the employee at the center of the scandal, Tijani Muiz Adeyinka, was a manager on the electronic products team at First Bank’s head office in Iganmu, Lagos.

    Adeyinka, now a fugitive, allegedly diverted around ₦40 billion (approximately $29 million) over two years. He reportedly used his position to misappropriate funds by processing customer reversal requests to a merchant account under his control. The scheme went undetected due to his authority to finalize transactions without additional approvals.

    The fraud was discovered when a customer complaint led to an internal review by the bank’s control unit, uncovering numerous suspicious transactions. First Bank promptly alerted the police and pursued legal measures to mitigate the financial damage.

    Court documents reveal that Adeyinka transferred funds to his wife’s account at Zenith Bank, which subsequently dispersed the money across 34 additional accounts. These accounts further funneled the funds to 1,190 other accounts, creating a complex web of transactions designed to obfuscate the origin of the stolen money.

    “We are working closely with law enforcement agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding this fraud and apprehend all culprits involved,” First Bank stated in a letter to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police on May 10, 2024.

    President Bola Tinubu’s government remains firm on a N60,000 minimum wage. On Friday, NLC officials walked out of a 37-member tripartite committee meeting in Abuja due to the federal government’s stance on the issue. Festus Osifo, president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), confirmed the development and provided further details to journalists.

    During the briefing, leaders of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) urged Nigerians to bear with them, apologizing for any inconvenience while affirming their commitment to pursuing the cause to its conclusion.

     

  • Passengers, Farmers, Others Killed As Bandits Hit Katsina Communities

    According to reports, at least 17 individuals lost their lives in distinct assaults by bandits across various communities within the Kankara local government area of Katsina state.

    The latest incident which occurred on Thursday involved a commercial vehicle which came under bandits attack near Dan Marke village along Kankara – Marabar Kankara road while returning from a market.

    A resident told our reporter that five persons were killed on the spot, including the driver simply identified as Dan Mashi, while others who sustained gunshot injuries were receiving treatment at a hospital.

    He added that two among the passengers were abducted, including the son of the deceased driver.

    Also earlier on Thursday morning, seven farmers were reportedly killed on their farms at Katsalle community near Mabai, in the same Kankara local government area.

    A resident who confirmed the incident said earlier in week the bandits had also killed three farmers on their farms as they vowed not allow the farmers to cultivate their farms this season.

    “All these places were farms that are very close to the villages. We have for long forsaken our farms that are far away from our villages due to fear of attack, and it is unfortunate that they kill now in most cases rather than just abducting people for ransom,”     he said.

    In a separate incident, two were reported killed at Unguwar Daudun Noma by bandits suspected to have attacked the vehicle.

    Daily Trust observed that the major fear of the affected communities was their inability to peacefully access their farms, especially as prices of food items have gone through the roofs and their farms are their only source of livelihood.

    However, while chatting with members of the press on Wednesday as part of his one year anniversary in office, the Katsina state governor, Mallam Dikko Umar Radda, acknowledged the threat pose by the terrorists to farmers and promised that his government in collaboration with security agencies were taking measures to arrest the situation.

    Katsina state police spokesman, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, could not be reached for confirmation as at the time of filing this report.
