Police Issue Stern Warning to Labour Unions Amid TUC, NLC Strike

Police Urge NLC and TUC to Abandon Strike to Maintain Order.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to comply with legal procedures and abandon their proposed nationwide strike to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The Federal Government recently declared the planned strike illegal and premature, warning it could escalate tensions and political instability.

In a statement released on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, acknowledged the organized labour’s right to strike to advocate for workers’ interests. However, he emphasized the importance of adhering to existing laws governing such activities to prevent chaos.

“The Nigeria Police Force, while acknowledging the recent announcement by organized labour regarding the intention to embark on a nationwide strike action and understanding the right of organized labour to engage in such actions to advocate for the interests of all workers, wishes to emphasize the importance of adherence to the existing laws governing such activities; and calls for caution to prevent a breakdown of law and order within the country,” Adejobi stated.

He further urged the organized labour to continue deliberations at the Tripartite Committee, which is focused on determining a new minimum wage, and to shelve the planned strike to avoid undue hardships on the public and to maintain order.

“The NPF hereby urges organized labour to proceed with the ongoing deliberations at the Tripartite Committee, which is focused on determining a new minimum wage, and shelve the planned strike as such decision is essential to prevent untold hardships on members of the public and maintain order and stability within our country,” he added.

Tinubu’s Minister Reveals Why Many Multinationals Companies Are Fleeing Nigeria

Why Many Multinationals Companies Are Leaving Nigeria: Tinubu’s Minister Gives Details.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has provided insights into the reasons behind the departure of several multinational companies from Nigeria. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics” program, Edun highlighted the government’s efforts to improve the economic and investment climate to attract and retain more multinational corporations.

    Challenges and Solutions

Edun identified the lack of a liquid foreign exchange market as a significant impediment for the exiting multinationals. He stated, “One of the major drawbacks, one of the major impediments for them (exiting multinationals), was they did not have a liquid foreign exchange market.”

BREAKING: NLC,TUC Decide on Indefinite Strike After Meeting with National Assembly

To address this, the government has implemented a willing buyer, willing seller foreign exchange market, which, although not perfect, is a step towards stabilizing the exchange rate and lowering inflation and interest rates.

    Improved Investment Climate

Recent executive orders signed by President Bola Tinubu have created a more favorable investment climate, particularly in the gas sector, which Nigeria has in abundance. Edun emphasized the government’s commitment to not only retain existing multinational companies but also attract new ones. He assured that with the improved environment, more companies would be willing to invest in Nigeria.

    Economic Stabilization Package

Edun revealed that a proposal aimed at easing operations for both local and foreign manufacturers is part of an Economic Stabilisation Package currently before the President. He acknowledged the country’s economic challenges but expressed optimism, stating, “We are in a difficult place but the direction of travel is towards improvement. So, every single day, every single month, we are looking at an improved economic situation for Nigeria.”

    Recent Departures and Economic Crisis

Nigeria’s current economic crisis, exacerbated by the government’s policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows, has prompted some manufacturing companies to exit the country. Notable among these are the manufacturers of Huggies and Kotex diapers, Kimberly-Clark, as well as other multinational giants like Procter and Gamble (P&G), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Unilever, and Sanofi-Aventi Nigeria. These companies have cited high energy costs and currency depreciation as primary reasons for their departure.

Despite these challenges, Edun remains confident that the ongoing efforts to stabilize and improve Nigeria’s economic environment will ultimately succeed in attracting and retaining multinational investments.

FCT, Abuja — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) announced on Sunday, June 2, that they will proceed with a planned indefinite strike over the new minimum wage. The unions have stated they will meet to discuss the National Assembly leadership’s appeal to suspend the strike and allow for further dialogue.

Be In Forefront In Rewriting Narratives Of Nigeria For Better Society – IBB To NIPR

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has tasked the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to continue to be at the forefront of rewriting the narratives of Nigeria for a better society.

Babangida gave the commendation when the NIPR governing council, led by its president, Ike Neliaku, paid a courtesy visit to his uphill mansion to mark the institute’s 60th diamond anniversary celebration in Minna.

He said the institute is the only one that has brought its wisdom to bear in the affairs of the nation.

The former military president, who scored NIPR high in the running of its affairs in the country, said the institute has been steadfast in implementing all that the country expected of them.

IBB insisted, “I have always believed that we have to write a new narrative for this great country. And, as time goes by, our society will be a society that everybody will be proud to belong to.”

“Wherever I go, I used to say other countries should copy from what NIPR is doing in Nigeria. I commend the Institute for trying to provide a better society for this country, and their strength has gone high.”

While congratulating the Institute on its 60th anniversary, the elder statesman noted, “So far, the Institute has not misplaced the trust I have in it. I feel very proud of the institute, as it is living up to expectations.”

Earlier, the NIPR president, Neliaku, said the institute was established in 1963 and attained the status of chartered in 1989 during the administration of Gen. IBB, adding that during his time as the Head of State, the NIPR became the first to be chartered in the world.

He explained that they were in Niger State to celebrate the 60th diamond anniversary with IBB, who was responsible for making the institute chartered.

He explained that the NIPR has currently grown from officers to management function, hence the increase in the value of PR personnel for strategic and effective communication in the nation.

The president also disclosed some of the plans of the institute, which include the establishment of the Public Relations (PR) and Leadership University to be located in Nasarawa State.

Also, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Muhammad Idris Malagi, represented by the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Ndace, assured of a sustained partnership with the NIPR in order to achieve the national value chain policy of the federal government.

How Nigerian Soldiers Humiliate and Force Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe Out of His SUV in Aba

Tension as Soldiers Reportedly Force Senator Abaribe Out of His SUV in Aba

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, was reportedly humiliated and forced out of his Land Cruiser bulletproof SUV by soldiers. This incident occurred in Aba, Abia State, following the killing of five military personnel at the Obikabia junction military checkpoint on Thursday.

The confrontation started when unknown gunmen attacked and killed five soldiers at the military checkpoint during the May 30 Biafra Day celebrations. In response, the Nigerian Army deployed reinforcements, blocking roads in key areas of Aba North Local Government and extending into some villages in the Obingwa area.

While en route to a funeral ceremony in Obingwa, Senator Abaribe encountered a military barricade at Itu Ngwa village. His vehicle was stopped, and despite attempts by his police security detail, to explain the situation, the soldiers insisted that Abaribe must exit his vehicle. The senator eventually complied and was delayed for some time before being allowed to proceed.

At the funeral, Senator Abaribe recounted the incident to attendees, stating that after the soldiers allowed him to continue, he contacted Governor Alex Otti, requesting a statement to calm the tense situation. However, Governor Otti declined, fearing that issuing a statement might aggravate the situation.

The tension escalated further when Abaribe was stopped again by another group of soldiers on his way home after the funeral. Despite introducing himself as a senator, he was again ordered out of his bulletproof SUV and delayed before being allowed to leave. Concerned for his safety, Abaribe detoured to Umuahia instead of his village, Ohuru in Obingwa LGA, and returned to Abuja on the first flight on Friday.

The incident underscores the heightened tension and security concerns in Abia State following the killing of military personnel, with the Nigerian Army vowing to retaliate for the attack.

Aspirants Call For Cancellation Of Ebonyi Councillorship Primary Election

Three aspirants for the Okpohsi Ward One Councillorship position on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have called for the cancellation of the primary election held on Friday.

The ward councillorship aspirants, including Igwe Frank Arinze, Ali Uchenna Ugadu and Agbo Sunday Agbo, also urged the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Barrister Josy Eze, and APC State Chairman, Stanley Okoro Emegha, to cancel the election.

They alleged that gross irregularities, intimidation, and crises characterized the exercise in an alleged attempt to impose a candidate on the people.

They made this known in their joint petition to Governor Francis Nwifuru, which was copied to the APC State Chairman in the state.

The trio said they decided to notify the governor about the alleged crisis-ridden councillorship primary election on Friday, May 31, 2024, at Community Primary School, Ndiagu Igube, Umuakpu Ngbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state, for appropriate action to be taken to avert further escalation.

They accused the electoral officer, Friday Onwe, and his team of openly conspiring to cause crises during the election by aiding and abetting electoral fraud, wherein, after counting the votes of the incumbent councillor, Mr. Henry Okpe, their votes were not counted.

The aggrieved aspirants said their pleas to the electoral officer to count their votes fell on deaf ears as he (Friday Onwe) declared that he was instructed to only count the incumbent councillor’s supporters.

“Before we could say anything further, the thugs, who were readily available for the eventual instruction, immediately descended on our voters, who queued behind us, and began to unleash mayhem on us.

“A Corolla car belonging to Igwe Frank Arinze was destroyed on the spot, while many people sustained injuries as they were beaten up and stoned.

“Consequent upon the above, we cry unto the peace-minded Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the Chairman of Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), and the State Chairman of our great party to intervene in this matter to avert further escalation of the crises.

“We condemn in its entirety the heinous act meted out to the unsuspecting electorate and request that the result be declared in favor of Igwe Frank Arinze, who had the longest line, or alternatively cancel the election and fix another date and venue for a credible election.

“We reassure the party of our unflinching commitment to the survival and success of APC in the state,” they added.

UCL Final: Real Madrid Didn’t Deserve Draw Against Dortmund – Carvajal

Despite Real Madrid’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on Saturday night, defender Dani Carvajal, admitted that his team didn’t even merit a draw against the Bundesliga side.

Carvajal, who scored the opening goal for Real Madrid in the 74th minute, was candid about the Los Blancos’ performance.

In a post-match interview, the Spain international said via (MadridXtra on X):

“We didn’t even deserve a draw, but this is football.”

Carvajal’s comments likely referred to Dortmund’s dominant performance in the first half, where they came close to scoring multiple times, including Niclas Fullkrug hitting the post.

Meanwhile, Vinicius Jr. also scored for Carlo Ancelotti’s side during the encounter.

Abuja Federal High Court Threatens to Jail DSS Director General for Contempt.

The Abuja Federal High Court has issued a stern warning to Yusuf Bichi, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), threatening him with imprisonment for alleged contempt of court.

The court’s threat follows repeated instances of the DSS disobeying its rulings regarding visitation orders for Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently in the custody of the secret police.

The notice, which was sent to our correspondent by Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, stated: “TAKE NOTICE that unless you obey the directions contained in this Order, you will be guilty of Contempt of Court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”

Our correspondent noted that the notice was acknowledged by DSS operatives Tina James and Fatima Abdul.

Details Emerge as Northerners Reject Bill Proposing Return of Regional Government, Say Tinubu Plans to Dismantle North

This development comes after the Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, refused Kanu’s application to restore his bail on May 20, 2024. Instead, the court issued an order modifying the conditions of counsel visitation to Kanu. The court aimed to ensure that Kanu’s lawyers have adequate opportunities to prepare him for trial, thereby guaranteeing a fair trial.

Justice Nyako ordered that Kanu be allowed to meet with up to five of his lawyers, with such consultations to take place in a “clean” room at the State Security Services facility where Kanu is detained.

The court’s warning underscores the importance of compliance with judicial orders and the potential legal consequences of defiance.

Details Emerge as Northerners Reject Bill Proposing Return of Regional Government, Say Tinubu Plans to Dismantle North

    Nigeria, Criticize Tinubu’s Plan

A bill proposing a return to the regional system of government in Nigeria has sparked significant backlash from northern media influencers and social media personalities, particularly from the Arewa community on Twitter. The proposed bill, which aims to replace the current constitution derived from Decree 24 of 1999, has been met with vehement opposition, with critics alleging that it is part of a broader plan to dismantle the North.

Background and Content of the Bill

The controversial draft bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Substitute the Annexure to Decree 24 of 1999 with a New Governance Model for the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” is circulating on social media. It seeks to introduce a federal/regional system of governance, giving ethnic blocs within states the autonomy to govern their affairs. This bill, once passed, would replace the 1999 Constitution with a new governance model, pending a referendum by the Nigerian people.

The bill’s advocates argue that the current constitution is not “autochthonous” since it was imposed by the military without the explicit consent of the Nigerian people. They claim that a revised constitution reflecting the desires of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic nationalities is necessary for true federalism.

    Key Provisions of the Bill

    1. Federation Structure: Nigeria would be restructured into regional territories with a Federal Capital Territory.
    2. Self-Determination Rights: Every ethnic nationality in Nigeria would have the right to self-determination and the establishment of government institutions within their territories.
    3. Referendum Requirement: Any constitutional amendments would require approval through a national referendum.

    Northern Opposition

Prominent northern figures and influencers have expressed their disapproval of the bill. They argue that the North, already disadvantaged in terms of political, economic, and educational development, would suffer further under a regional system. They also accuse the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, of trying to dismantle the North’s influence.

Comrade Abiyo Roni from Jigawa State stated, “As a Northerner, I will never support Regional Government. For the past 64 years of Independence, what does the North gain in terms of political, economic, and educational development? In every aspect, the North has been left behind. Our North region is the most retrogressive region in the country, so let’s build the North before any regional government.”

Another northern voice, Sarki, emphasized the timing issue: “Simply put, I’m not against a regional system of government, but this is not the right time for it because the North is at a disadvantage. Get rid of insecurity and return our region to us as you found it, and then we can consider reverting to that system of government.”

Public analyst and political strategist Hamma Hayatu suggested that President Tinubu, influenced by his National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) background, is pushing for restructuring without prior campaign promises: “Tinubu did not promise restructuring Nigeria during the campaigns, but the NADECO spirit in him will definitely tow toward that. An unverified kite of a bill about regional government is being flown now.”

    Social Media Reactions

The sentiment on social media, particularly among Arewa Twitter, is largely critical of the proposed bill. Many users accuse the government of attempting to weaken the North under the guise of restructuring. An Arewa Twitter user wrote, “This (Yoruba) government wants to dismantle the North logically. These people know exactly what they are doing. Our northern leaders, elders, and youth are hungry people. They collected APC spaghetti and Tinubu’s money, so they can’t say anything.”

The proposal to revert to a regional system of government in Nigeria has ignited a fierce debate, particularly in the North, where there is a strong perception of political and economic marginalization. As the bill progresses through the National Assembly, it is expected to face continued resistance from northern stakeholders who view it as a threat to their regional interests and development.

    Regional Government meaning.

The term “regional government” refers to a form of governance in which a country is divided into various regions, each with its own local government that has specific powers and responsibilities. These regional governments operate under the broader national government but have significant autonomy to manage their internal affairs. This system allows for more localized and efficient administration, reflecting the specific needs and preferences of different regions.

In the context of Nigeria, a return to a regional government system would mean re-establishing a structure similar to what existed before the current federal system, where regions had more control over their resources, policies, and governance, as opposed to the more centralized federal system in place now. This structure is often proposed to better accommodate the country’s diverse ethnic and cultural groups, promoting self-determination and regional development.
