For many, this is a critical source of foreign exchange.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates

Understanding the factors that influence the dollar to naira exchange rate in the black market can help anticipate changes and make better financial decisions.

    Economic Policies

Government policies significantly impact exchange rates. Decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and foreign exchange regulations by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directly affect the naira’s value. For instance, when the CBN adjusts policies to manage inflation or stabilize the naira, it impacts the exchange rate.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus the demand for it plays a crucial role. When foreign currency is scarce or demand is high, the naira depreciates, leading to higher exchange rates. Conversely, an abundant supply of dollars can lead to lower rates.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate as investors move towards safer assets. Stability and positive political developments, on the other hand, can strengthen the naira.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as shifts in oil prices (a major export for Nigeria), international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. For example, a significant drop in oil prices can negatively impact Nigeria’s economy and the naira.

Comparing Official and Black Market Rates

There is a significant disparity between official and black market rates. The black market offers higher rates, but with substantial risks such as fraud and legal issues. The CBN advises using official channels to avoid these risks. Official rates provide stability and reliability, making them safer for most transactions.

Pounds and Euro to Naira Exchange Rates

For those dealing with currencies other than the US dollar, here are the latest rates:

    Pounds to Naira (CBN Rates)

    • Buying Rate: ₦1,890
    • Selling Rate: ₦1,905

Euro to Naira (Black Market Rates)

    • Buying Rate: ₦1,615
    • Selling Rate: ₦1,625

These rates are also subject to market conditions and economic policies.

Geegpay and Grey: online Exchange Platforms

Digital platforms like Geegpay and Grey offer convenient and secure options for currency exchange, providing competitive rates.

    Geegpay Dollar to Naira Rates

    • EUR (€): Buying at ₦1,690.03, Selling at ₦1,695.55
    • GBP (£): Buying at ₦1,950, Selling at ₦1,965
    • USD ($): Buying at ₦1,500, Selling at ₦1,550

    Grey Dollar to Naira Rates

    • EUR (€): Buying at ₦1,640.03, Selling at ₦1,719
    • GBP (£): Buying at ₦1,902, Selling at ₦2,015
    • USD ($): Buying at ₦1,460, Selling at ₦1,500

These platforms have gained popularity due to their ease of use, transparency, and security, making them viable alternatives to traditional methods.

Why the Disparity Between Official and Black Market Rates?

The disparity between the official CBN rates and the black market rates is influenced by several factors:

    1. Supply and Demand: The availability of foreign currency in the official market is often limited, leading individuals and businesses to seek forex in the black market where demand drives up prices.
    2. Regulatory Restrictions: The CBN imposes restrictions on the amount of forex available for personal and business use, making it difficult for many to meet their needs through official channels.
    3. Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices, inflation, and economic policies can create uncertainty, prompting people to turn to the parallel market for more favorable rates.

Impact of Black Market Rates on the Economy

The high exchange rates in the black market can have various implications for the Nigerian economy:

    • Inflation: Higher costs for imported goods can drive up prices locally, contributing to inflation.
    • Investment: Unfavorable exchange rates can deter foreign investment as investors seek more stable economic environments.
    • Trade: Exporters may benefit from higher naira values per dollar, while importers face increased costs, potentially leading to trade imbalances.

How to use the parallel market

For those needing to engage in forex transactions through the black market, safety and caution are paramount. Here are some tips:

    1. Verify Rates: Always check the latest rates from reliable sources like Aboki FX to ensure you get the best deal.
    2. Deal with Reputable Dealers: Engage with well-known and trusted Bureau De Change operators to avoid scams.
    3. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of economic news and CBN policies that could affect exchange rates.

Amaewhule’s petition aimed to halt the hearing process and transfer the case to another court, claiming that the current court had refused to allow other interested parties to join the suit. However, Justice Steven Dalyop Pam dismissed the petition on Monday, noting that it had not been served on the plaintiffs.

Reuben Wanogho, counsel for the plaintiffs, argued that the petition was an attempt to delay the proceedings and urged the court to disregard it. Wanogho emphasized that accepting the petition would set a harmful precedent.

Adeyemi Ajibade (SAN), the PDP’s National Legal Adviser, labeled the petition as ill-intentioned and clarified that there was no intention to exclude anyone from joining the suit.

Ferdinand Orbi (SAN), counsel for the defendants, claimed no knowledge of the petition but requested the court to consider it and halt proceedings if it had been addressed to the Chief Judge.

Justice Pam pointed out that the petition had not been served on the plaintiffs and that no motion or counter affidavit had been presented to the court. Consequently, he ruled that the petition be dismissed.

The case has been adjourned until June 28 for the hearing of pending motions

    Na'ima Hudu

    Na’ima Hudu

A Nigerian lady, Na’ima Hudu, has taken to Facebook to pass an important message to Muslim ladies if she becomes a second wife to their husbands.

The farmer, in a post on Saturday, June 22, 2024, also said she would not go diabolical as a second wife.

She also stated that she would not hurt or treat their kids badly and would not interrupt their calls or chats with their husbands.

    She wrote;

“If your husband informs you he would be getting married to me as a second wife, please wifey, do not panic! Because…

    1. I am not getting married to our husband to compete with you, you’re my sister in Islam and that we share same husband doesn’t make either of us bad women.

    2. By Allah, visiting seers and soothsayers aren’t in my blood, I never saw my mum nor sisters go diabolical and with Allah’s guidance I will NEVER tow that path till I take my last breath.

    3. I will never encourage our husband’s bad behaviors even when it is towards to you. I will try as much as I can to always bring his mind to it whenever he is towing the wrong path. I do not want to know if your wife is a weakling in za oza room or her food tastes horrible.

    4. My friends, sisters or even parents would not have that chance to advice I hurt or treat you or your kids badly, I do not even have family members to do this. My sisters are yours, just as my mum is your mum, if I offend you, call my mum to lay a complain. In fact, my sisters would tilt more towards you and always support you as they are all first wives and them dey beef me

    5. Know that your children are mine too and my household is always open for them to come in anytime! I do not fear your reactions when I treat them wrongly but I fear Allah’s punishment. So know that, even when you’re absent, I won’t harm them.

    6. It is absolutely normal for us get jealous, especially when our husband begins to tilt or becomes fond of one of us more. However, what isn’t normal, is trying to hurt me in whatever way or paint me bad to our husband just to gain his pity.

    7. When it’s your day, I am going to try not to interrupt with calls nor chats so you could have a swell time together, plus i expect same from you. Of course, not in the case of emergencies or even important matters.

So, no fear my sister and I pray Allah blesses our marriage with our husband.”

Three Magistrates Recalled Over Alleged Gross Abuse Of Duties

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission has taken disciplinary actions against Chief Magistrate, Talatu Makama, magistrate court No 29, Senior Magistrate, Rabi Abdulkadir, magistrate court No 48 and Senior Registrar, Abdu Nasir of Appeal section, High Court, Kano.

According to a release signed by the spokesperson of the Kano Judiciary, Baba Jibo, sequel to the findings of the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC) in respect to three petitions filed and investigated against Chief Magistrate Talatu Makama, the commission adopted the recommendations of the JPCC.

“Chief Magistrate Talatu Makama is recalled from the bench and relieved of all judicial duties effective immediately.

“Following the review of the circumstance surrounding the handling of the case between Commissioner of Police Vs Abubakar Salisu, by Rabi Abdulkadir, Senior Magistrate Court No. 48, the Commission found the actions of the Senior Magistrate to amount to judicial recklessness and therefore the Commission has resolved to recall the Magistrate and relieved her from judicial duties for a period of one calendar year.

“She has been instructed to cease all duties at Magistrate Court No. 48,” he stated.

Jibo noted that the JSC also considered the investigation report on the alleged misconduct of Senior Registrar, Abdu Nasir of the Appeals Department of the High Court.

He said that Mr. Nasir received payments of fees meant for court records into his personal account, which constitutes serious misconduct.

Consequently, the commission issued a strong warning to Abdu Nasir and deferred his promotion for one year.

The commission also at its 73rd meeting held on 20th June 2024, deliberated on the petitions received against chief magistrate court 60 manned by Tijjani Saleh Minjibir.

The response to the queries issued were found unsatisfactory.

“The commission viewed the actions of the chief magistrate to amount to serious misconduct and judicial recklessness and unanimously took the decision to recall Tijjani Saleh Minjibir from judicial duties for a period of one year effective immediately.

“He is to cease all judicial activities and report to the High Court headquarters for posting.

“The commission will continue to apply the appropriate sanctions against any erring staff, particularly those saddled with judicial responsibilities in order to safeguard the integrity and accountability of the judicial system and maintain the confidence of the public,” he added.

Breaking: Crisis Continues in Rivers as Former LG Chairmen, Youths Storm Secretariats for Protest

Rivers State remains engulfed in tension as former council chairmen from 21 out of 23 local governments have launched protests against their removal from office. The demonstrations, which began early this morning, have seen the ex-chairmen and their supporters brandishing placards with messages like “Police, continue occupying the councils” and “Sim Fubara can’t continue to act as he likes.”

This unrest follows last week’s intervention by the Rivers State Police Command, which prevented some chairmen from accessing their secretariats, in line with a directive to take control of all 23 local government council secretariats.

In Buguma, the headquarters of Asari-Toru Local Government Area (LGA), former Chairman Onengiyeofori George led a procession of supporters through the town, chanting solidarity songs in favor of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Similarly, in Abonnema, the headquarters of Akuku-Toru LGA, a group of protesters demonstrated their support for the police’s ongoing closure of the council offices.

The former chairmen are reportedly loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike. The crisis escalated when Governor Siminalayi Fubara directed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume leadership of the councils, following the expiration of the three-year tenure of the elected chairmen, vice chairmen, and councilors.

Despite this directive, the former chairmen have refused to step down, resulting in clashes between supporters of the opposing political factions. Adding to the turmoil, a recent court ruling annulled the tenure extension granted by a 27-member Assembly loyal to Wike, acknowledging instead a three-member House of Assembly aligned with Governor Fubara.

Videos emerged from Chioma’s bridal shower on Sunday night and in one of the clips, the chef was captured narrating how her fiancé planned the party without her knowledge.

She explained that Davido lured her out of the house by telling her that they were going for a dinner date but it turned out to be her bridal shower.

She said, “Let me tell you a story. I know this is an event centre and David said we were going to eat.

“He was trying to get the exact location and when we got outside, he asked somebody something and I said, ‘This is not a restaurant. I’m hungry, I want to eat.’ Then I saw balloons, I just started screaming.”

DAILY POST reports that Davido confirmed a few days ago that he and Chioma would have their wedding on June 25, in Lagos.

Don’t Be Quiet Over Injustice, Silence Is Connivance – Onaiyekan Tells Nigerians

Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has called on Nigerians not to be quiet but speak out against injustice.

Cardinal Onaiyekan made this call at the inauguration of the Catholic Social Teaching, CST, programme at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, CSN, in Abuja over the weekend, warning that silence was tantamount to complicity.

He stressed the need to actively work against social injustices, noting that the Catholic Church had a responsibility to teach the right things, even if it meant facing criticism from politicians.

“As Catholic Bishops, we are often interviewed and make powerful political statements. Nobody can stop us from doing that because it is part of our job. We have a responsibility to teach the right things, even if it means facing criticism from politicians.

“We cannot afford to remain silent in the face of injustice. Silence is complicity, and we must speak out against injustice wherever we see it.

“Whenever we speak nicely, politicians hail us, but when we criticize them and warn them that they are not doing well, they get angry with us, accusing us of dabbling in politics. But politics is not for politicians alone; it’s for everyone.

“We teach the right things, but it’s up to those concerned to take the teaching and work on it. We don’t have the facility to force politicians to do the right thing; we only have the word of mouth, our message.

“Even Jesus taught for three years, and it was the same people he taught who rallied around and crucified Him on the cross. They heard His message, but they didn’t take it. It’s the same today: those who listen to good wisdom will do well, and the people will profit from them,” the Emeritus Archbishop said.
