Old naira notes remain legal tender – Supreme Court insists

The Supreme Court has stated that its order from February 8 prohibiting the Federal Government and its agencies from enforcing the February 10 deadline for the use of old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes remains in effect.

Wednesday, the court issued the clarification in response to a complaint by Abdulhakeem Mustapha (SAN), lawyer for Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara States, that the Federal Government and its agencies have failed to comply with the order and have allegedly directed the rejection of the old notes.

Mustapha stated that the plaintiff filed a notice of noncompliance with the February 8 court order. And demanded the court take action against the defendant to preserve the court’s dignity.

He added, “The government has disregarded this order. We are discussing executive lawlessness. We have filed an affidavit stating this… We want the court to renew the guidance order for the parties.”

Justice John Okoro, who presided over a seven-member court panel, requested that Mustapha file a formal application to present his complaints and to allow the respondent to respond appropriately.

Justice Okoro stated that a renewal of the court’s order was unnecessary.

Since the order issued by the court on February 8 was issued pending the outcome of the plaintiff’s motion for injunctions, the order remains in effect as the motion has not yet been heard.

In a ruling issued on February 8, the court stated, “after careful consideration of this ex-parte application and the grounds in support thereof, this court finds that there is an immediate need for this court to intervene by granting this application.

“Accordingly, this request is granted as requested.

“That is, an order of interim injunction restraining the Federal Government of Nigeria, either by itself or acting through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and/or the commercial banks, its agents; agencies, corporations, ministries, parastatals, organisations or through any person or persons (natural and artificial) howsoever, from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023 the timeframe within which the now older versions of the 200, 500 and 1,000 naira banknotes must be withdrawn.

The Supreme Court has scheduled February 22 for the hearing of the suit filed by the states of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara challenging the legality of the Federal Government’s naira swap policy.

The court selected the date after adding the Attorneys General of the states of Katsina, Lagos, CR, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, and Sokoto as co-plaintiffs to the earlier suit filed by Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara.

The court also joined as co-respondents the Attorneys General of the states of Edo and Bayelsa. Both states chose to support the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), who was initially listed as the lone defendant.

The court ordered that the lawsuits filed separately by the states of Nasarawa, Rivers, and Kano on the same issue be consolidated with the lawsuit filed by the states of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara.

The court ordered the parties to submit all necessary documents prior to the Wednesday hearing.

Before adjourning, Justice Okoro instructed Kanu Agabi (SAN), attorney for the AGF, to advise his client to ensure the availability of currency for the people.

“Inform your client to give people money. If they proceed to the ATM, the plaintiffs will withdraw the lawsuit. Make money accessible to the impoverished masses.

“We’ve heard of ATMs being attacked and bank employees jumping fences…

You should be aware that a hungry man is a hostile man. I say no more,” he said.

Agabi responded that Nigerians only blamed the government for their poverty.

“Many people are impoverished. They blame the Federal Government and the AGF. I also have no money.

“Things have been poor for some time. “The problems did not begin today,” Agabi said.

The governors of Kaduna and Kogi states, Nasir El-Rufai and Yahaya Bello, were present in court to observe proceedings.

Bello stated, following the court proceedings, that the states are not at war with the Federal Government over its cashless policy, but are only concerned about its negative effects on the citizens, who are now denied access to their funds.

Also Read: Wike fully out, mobilizes massively for APC, as Rivers PDP supporters wears Tinubu’s Logo to welcome him

Bello continued, “Myself and my older brother, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, are present today to observe the court proceedings.

We have faith in the judicial system and its learned jurists.

“We are in court because Nigerians are suffering as a result of this cashless versus currency redesign policy of the CBN.

“According to the information we have received from the court, the order issued by these esteemed Justices (of the Supreme Court) remains in effect until Wednesday, when the case will be heard.

“We want to urge all Nigerians to maintain peace, law, and order, even though we are all suffering. This is only a temporary setback for our country.

We do not condemn President Muhammadu Buhari’s particular policy. It will be the way forward, but its implementation is being questioned to ensure the survival of Nigerians.

“No one should be forced to open an account if they do not wish to. You are free to retain your wealth as you see fit.”

10 Days To Go: No Cash Yet For Elections – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it lacks the funds to mobilize its ad hoc staff ten days before the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections.

Recall that Nigerians have been experiencing a naira note shortage since the Central Bank of Nigeria redesigned the N200, N500, and N1000 notes.

In the meantime, the Supreme Court will continue hearing the cases brought by three state governments challenging the currency swap deadline today.

In response to a lawsuit filed by the governments of Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara states challenging the currency policy, the Supreme Court on February 8 enjoined the federal government from enforcing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) cash swap deadline.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), met with the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, last Tuesday

During this meeting, he requested concessions regarding the naira redesign policy, with specific reference to the limitations placed on cash withdrawals and the need to make some cash available for some peculiarities that cannot be met with electronic transfer of funds.

Emefiele responded that he would ensure the CBN is not viewed as an agent used to thwart the upcoming general election, and that the central bank would provide INEC with the necessary naira notes.

Also Read: Fresh Crisis in PDP as Chimaroke Nnamani Drags Party To Court Over Expulsion

When the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Yahaya Bello, raised the issue, however, it became apparent that the new notes had not been made available to the electoral body prior to the election.

Bello stated that the CBN’s cashless policy could hinder the ability of the INEC to conduct general elections.

Speaking in Abuja at the North-Central stakeholders’ roundtable on the 2023 general elections, which was organized by the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA), he stated that the commission needs cash to coordinate security and logistics, and that the scarcity of the naira could have an impact on this.

He stated that if nothing was done to address the cash shortage caused by the policies, it would be difficult for INEC in the FCT and across the country to deploy election staff and materials, as the majority of services required cash to obtain.

Aside from the cash shortage, he stated that the commission was prepared for the elections, as it had received 80 percent of polling materials and trained staff prior to the 25 February and 11 March elections.

Naira scarcity created to stop Tinubu from winning presidential election — Gbajabiamila

Naira scarcity created to stop Tinubu from winning presidential election, according to Gbajabiamila

Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker of the House of Representatives, has attributed the current hardship occasioned by fuel and naira scarcity to “elements” bent on scuttling APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu’s victory at the February 25 poll.

Mr Gbajabiamila stated this in Lagos on Tuesday during the launching of the second phase of a transport initiative called ‘Gbaja Ride’ for his Surulere constituents. The 35 low-fare buses will ply different routes in Surulere and its environs.

“As your representative and speaker, I have a good understanding of the current hardships and discomfort being faced by many Nigerians, without exception to my constituents,” Mr Gbajabiamila explained. “The lower legislative chamber under my leadership has been on the side of the people, working tirelessly to rescue them from these difficulties. I am glad that the judiciary has also confirmed our position on the implementation of the policy of naira redesign.”

He explained that the new naira banknotes policy was a well-thought-out one, which had unfortunately been hijacked and politicised, alleging that some elements created a crisis around the policy to stop Mr Tinubu from becoming the next president.

Mr Gbajabiamila said the plot seemed to be failing as Nigerians still keep faith with the APC and Mr Tinubu despite the chaos following the naira scarcity.

“Nobody can convince me that it is not a plot to stop Asiwaju from becoming the president of this country. But I am glad that our God is a wonderful being as the plot these people sat together to hatch, he has intervened,” said Mr Gbajabiamila.

He added, “I have followed the campaign team to the East, North and everywhere with Asiwaju, and I doff my hat for Nigerians.”

Although the management of Npower has assured beneficiaries that they will be paid in the near future, the majority of beneficiaries have not yet come up with an explanation for why Npower is taking so long to pay. You will recall that in January 2023, we informed you that thousands of beneficiaries of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) from the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development stormed Sir Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi State to receive and thank President Muhammadu Buhari for maintaining the Programme.

This occurred as Nigerians prepared for the February 2023 general election, which is scheduled to take place this month. In the previous election, NSIP recipients played a crucial role in the election of the current administration.

NSIP is an initiative of the Buhari administration designed to eradicate poverty from 100,000,000 Nigerians in 10 years. The NSIP programme is comprised of the Npower programme, conditional cash transfer, the General Education Enhancement Program, and the National Homegrown School Feeding Program.

In Today’s Latest npower news update today on salary  and Npower Latest NewsFor Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, we would like to wish all Npower beneficiaries, both those who have left and those who are still serving, a very happy new year.

We are all aware that 2022 was a difficult year for Npower recipients because certain expectations were not met. Despite this, we all survived, and we are fortunate to witness the year 2023. All glory to God!

The year 2023 is viewed as crucial not only for Npower recipients but also for all Nigerians, as it will determine the future of the Npower programme and Nigeria’s future.

Some Npower recipients who expressed interest in serving as Adhoc staff for the 2023 and NPC 2023 censuses will be recruited to participate in these special events that will shape the face of Nigeria if selected.

As you are all aware, the Npower Programme is a youth empowerment initiative designed to equip young Nigerians with work experience and entrepreneurial skills. Participation in these additional responsibilities can therefore be advantageous for a beneficiary.

Since there will be elections in 2023 that will result in a leadership change, the new leadership will determine the future of the Npower programme. We believe that the approval of the NSIP bill offers hope for the continuation of the Npower Program.

In addition, as we enter the year 2023, the management of the Npower programme will address the program’s beneficiaries promptly regarding issues about the payment of stipends. Therefore, keep watch

You are encouraged to stay informed about the Npower Programme via the NASIMS self-service portal and the official Npower social media channels.

But for the time being, all we can tell you is to keep an eye on the payroll tab for changes; once the payroll payment update appears on the self-service dashboard, you will know it is time.

To answer the question that some batch C1 beneficiaries have about whether there will be Npower September stipend payments for batch C1 beneficiaries, all we can say for the time being is to stay updated with Npower officials’ news via their social communication platforms.

Christmas Celebration: Npower Batch C2 Beneficiaries Hopes For First Stipends Payment

As December draws to a close, N-Power batch C stream 2 volunteers are patiently awaiting their first stipend payment to help them celebrate the holidays and the new year.

With only a few days remaining before the new year, it remains unclear whether payment will be made before the 31st of December 2022, when Npower beneficiaries will celebrate the New year.

If the first stipend payment for Npower batch C stream 2 recipients is not made by the end of December 2022, it will be made after the holiday season, as the ministry of humanitarian affairs released a publication this week regarding their plans for the Npower Programme.

Will Npower recipients celebrate the Christmas and New year holidays differently this year compared to previous years when Npower payments were delayed? Regarding the payment of stipends, all eyes and ears are on the ground, awaiting positive news.

Know that you can call the Npower care line to discuss your concerns and that you can also continue the conversation on social media, as we hope that things will improve this year.

Therefore, let us wait and pray that the first payment for Npower batch C stream 2 will be made this December, based on logistical considerations so that recipients can celebrate Christmas in style.

However, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas in advance.

No fewer than six APC campaign coordinators have defected to the PDP, Ejesgist News reports.

Six campaign coordinators from the Bauchi State All Progressives Congress (APC) Gubernatorial Campaign Council have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of next month’s governorship election.

The departure has left a void in the camp of retired Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar at a time when Bauchi governorship aspirants have ramped up their attempts to win over voters.

The chairman of the coordinators, Comrade Nasiru Khalid, disclosed the decision to dump the party at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Bauchi.

He said the progressive blueprint of the PDP led administration in Bauchi lured them to the party, adding that they will contribute immensely to the victory of the party in the state.

Khalid said their unanimous decision to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed due consultation with their followers at the grassroots.

He said the delegation will continue to mobilise and canvass votes for candidates under the platform of the PDP considering the party’s blueprint which according to him will be beneficial to citizenry.

Earlier, Bauchi State governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed said his administration has improved the living standard of citizens through massive empowerment despite the economic challenges, saying more dividends of democracy will be delivered if reelected.

Wike Has Directed All Rivers House Of Assembly Members To Vote For Tinubu — Senator Maeba

Senator Lee Maeba has said that Wike has directed all the Rivers House of Assembly members to vote for Tinubu

Senator Lee Maeba has come out to say that the Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has instructed all the Rivers House of Assembly members and local government chairmen in the state to go and vote for All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

READ ALSO: Wike mocks Atiku as PDP cancels presidential rally in Rivers, says Tinubu is Nigeria’s next president

Lee Maeba who spoke to our correspondent yesterday, said Governor Wike has been going through the back door and sitting with the members of APC despite still being a PDP governor. Senator Maeba also stated that he heard a report that Woke told all local government chairmen, House of Assembly members and any stakeholder near him to vote for Tinubu in the upcoming election.

    He said;

“Wike said that he discovered that we are in alliance with the APC and planned to do a joint rally with them in order to fill the stadium, that’s a lie. We are not working for the APC, we are working for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, we are PDP.”

“We also heard that he gave instructions to all Local Government Chairmen, House of Assembly members and stakeholders close to him that they should go and vote for Tinubu. So we are not the ones engaging with the APC, he is the one passing through the back door to go and sit with them.

No more bloc votes, Peter Obi has emerged as a major candidate to watch out for in the North — highly placed northerner

A highly placed northerner has said that Peter Obi has emerged as a major candidate to watch out for in the North

With less than two weeks to the presidential election, there are indications that power brokers in the North are currently in a dilemma over which candidate to support for the February 25 presidential election.

The development comes even as powerful lobbyists of leading candidates have invaded the North especially the grassroots to woo more voters as the election approaches crunch time.

A highly placed northerner who did not want his name in print told our correspondent that the era of bloc votes enjoyed by President Muhammadu Buhari in the North is over.

READ ALSO: Details on why Peter Obi didn’t visit Oba of Lagos emerge

He however said that some die-hard conservatives still believe power should remain in the North and are rallying round the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar but that he cannot repeat the Buhari feat in the region.

He said apart from that, there is a huge population of people in the North who believe that another northerner should not succeed President Muhammadu Buhari after he would have completed eight years in office on May 29.

This category of people, our source said, are torn between the candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu and his counterpart in the Labour Party(LP), Mr Peter Obi.

He said, many northerners believe that the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party(NNPP), Musa Kwankwaso, though a good material has no chance in the forthcoming election.

Our source told Ejesgist News that Atiku’s supporters believe that apart from ethnic and religious sentiments, he remains the most mature and national figure to tackle the myriad of problems facing the country now.

He said: “many believe that Turaki Adamawa is the right man for the job now despite what seems a disadvantage that he is a northerner trying to succeed Buhari, another northerner.”

On the chances of the APC candidate, he said Asiwaju wormed his way into the hearts of many northerners immediately after he won his party’s primaries but lost a lot of grounds when he appeared not physically fit enough to take on the responsibility of leading Nigeria at this perilous time.

READ ALSO: APC In Dispute Over PDP G-5 Endorsement Of Tinubu

He said many of those who supported him for his contributions to returning power to the North are worried that a Tinubu presidency may be a repeat of the early years of Buhari’s administration which witnessed a lot of challenges owing to the ill-health of the president.

“Tinubu before now was the automatic choice of many northerners who considered him a friend to the North but the situation has changed because Nigeria must get it right now”, he said.

Our source also told Ejesgist News that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party has emerged a major candidate to watch out for in the North.

He said that even though some wish him away as a fresher in the race, he has surprisingly made inroad into the North especially the youth and Christian population in the region.

His words: “When Peter Obi entered the race, some leaders in the North were laughing at him for not having what it took to win votes but the situation has changed.

“His message of integrity has so much resonated in the North and you know people in the region believe in any candidate who they see as pro-masses.

“People have to watch out for him. He would not win most northern states but he will go beyond the expectation of his opponents. That is why I believe that there would no more be bloc votes in the North again.

Interesting things you didn’t know about the U.S. dollar

You know that our money is the United States dollar. Did you know…

-There are three parts to a dollar: the penny, the nickel, and the dime. There are 100 cents in a dollar.

-The first dollar was made in 1792. It was used in the colonies instead of the Spanish dollar, which was used before.

-The dollar is the currency that is traded the most around the world.

-The dollar is also the currency that is most often faked around the world.

The US Dollar: A Brief History

Did you know that the history of the US dollar is pretty interesting? It was made when the Coinage Act was passed by the US government in 1792. This law made the US dollar the official currency of the country.

Since then, there have been a few changes to the dollar. For example, in 1854, the US stopped using Spanish coins and started using American ones. And in 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the US off the gold standard. This meant that the dollar could no longer be traded for gold.

The US dollar is one of the most popular currencies in the world right now. Over 60% of all transactions between countries take place in US dollars. So the next time you spend your vacation dollars in a foreign country, you can be sure that you are using a currency that has been around for a while!

Who Maintains the Production of US Currency?

The United States Mint is responsible for producing US dollar paper currency. It is a government agency that falls under the Treasury Department. They are responsible for producing both paper currency and coins.

Interestingly, each bill and coin’s design is determined by the president. The Mint then creates a prototype and submits it for approval to the Treasury. It is then put into production. Therefore, each bill and coin in circulation has been authorised by the president, which is why they often bear his or her image.

What are the Facts Influencing the Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange rate for today ?

Here are some of the reasons for the dollar-to-naira exchange rate’s decline.

Inflation Rates: It is common knowledge that inflation has a direct impact on black market exchange rates. The naira will benefit if the Nigerian economy can be stabilised and inflation is brought under control; however, if the naira continues to fall, it may indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive on a daily basis.

Interest Rates: Interest rates are another tool to keep an eye on. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, the economy will contract, and the value of the naira will fall as a result.

Government debt has the potential to affect investor confidence and, as a result, the flow of funds into the economy. If inflows are high, the naira exchange rate will rise in its favour.
