United States Allocates $50m For Nigeria’s General Election
The United States (US) has allocated $50 million to Nigeria in advance of the general election in 2023.
It is anticipated that the funds will be used to train a certain group of individuals, including journalists, civil society organisations (CSOs), and technical help, in an effort to ensure a transparent election that would be held in 2023.

In Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, today during an open session of an election reporting course for journalists organised by West Africa Broadcast & Media Academy (WABMA), US Consul General Will Stevens made this announcement.
He added that the US government has been collaborating with partners through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in order to ensure that every vote counts next year.

The US consul general also disclosed that, in order to better prepare journalists, hundreds of training sessions on a variety of subjects, including fact-checking, health reporting, defence and national security reporting, investigative journalism, election reporting, and media ethics, had been held.
He asserts that the US government will continue to stress the importance of voting and defending free speech.

“The US government has allocated over $50 million for technical assistance and support, training, for civil society organisations to support elections, transparency, election processes, technical assistance, working on the IT systems, among others,” Stevens claimed.
We are committed to measures here in Nigeria to develop the necessary capacity, he declared. Numerous journalists received training from us on subjects like fact-checking, health reporting, reporting on defence and national security, investigative journalism, reporting on elections, and media ethics.
