Naira redesign: Uncertainties as FG, States resume Supreme Court legal fireworks

Today, Wednesday, the legal fireworks between the three northern States controlled by the All Progressives Congress, APC, (Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kogi) and the federal government over the controversies surrounding the Naira redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, will resume at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court will hear the merits of the applicant’s (Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kogi) main application and decide whether to vacate the interlocutory injunction it previously granted against the CBN.

    1) The crisis surrounding the redesign of the naira escalated on Tuesday, when the Central Bank of Nigeria failed to clarify the legal tender status of the old notes. As a result of the refusal of banks, Fuel stations, and merchants to accept the old currency, the development spread confusion across the nation.

    2) Chimaroke Nnamani, the former governor of Enugu State and senator for the Enugu East Senatorial District, has filed a lawsuit against the Peoples Democratic Party for disciplinary action taken against him for alleged anti-party activities. A few days prior to his expulsion from the party, Nnamani filed the lawsuit with the Federal High Court of Abuja on February 7, 2023.

    9) Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba political organization, urged President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday to resist any temptation to impose an Interim National Government on Nigerians. Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, said in a statement that the latest call was necessitated by the revelation by Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai that elements within the Presidency were plotting to have the President impose an Interim Government on Nigerians.

In contrast to Governor Lalong of Plateau, who was adamant that the G-5 Governors were secretly working for the APC presidential candidate, his predecessor Jang believed that the G-5 could not endorse Tinubu.

We can’t glamourise what doesn’t work – APC gives reason for fighting Buhari

The All Progressives Congress APC has shed light on the factions within the ruling party.

A number of party leaders, including the party’s presidential candidate and governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, have recently criticized the Buhari administration’s newly implemented monetary policies.

El-Rufai and several northern governors also sued the administration to stop the policy, which they deemed anti-people.

Prince Mustapha Audu, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential campaign council, PCC, North Central, stated on Arise Television on Tuesday that the President is making the right moves at the wrong time.

“There are some government policies that the Nigerian people do not appreciate. We must be sincere. The President has implemented a number of policies to clean up the election, including the cash swap policy, but sabotage is evident in their implementation. There are clearly negative effects on Nigerians.

“Sometimes, it is necessary to weigh the costs and benefits of certain policies to determine when to implement them. APC members are highly intelligent and dynamic. When we know something is going well, we praise it, and when we know something is going poorly, we criticize it. There is no point in romanticizing what does not work; it must be stated.

Also Read: House on the rock finally Breaks Silence on Pastor who carried Gun to Church on Sunday, Reveals Next Line of Action

“If there are problems, you must tell the truth to those in authority and build on the positive aspects. Numerous individuals were concerned about the cash policy. You can compare the economic benefits to the negative conditions we are currently experiencing.

Thus, these are the things the party is currently fighting. We came together as a group to combat certain issues. Consider the cash crunch that is afflicting Nigeria, which is affecting farmers and people in the country.

“The intention was to clean up the election. He desires to leave a legacy of transparent elections. People claim that this is the time Nigerians move around during every election.

“Every four years, this is when the most Nigerians move. Therefore, making cash available is detrimental to the election, logistics, the military, and the police. Its implementation at this time and in this manner is undesirable.”

Cabal in the presidency planning interim government — El-Rufai raises fresh alarm

Cabal in the presidency planning interim government, Governor El-Rufai raises fresh alarm

Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai has stated that a Presidency cabal was working towards an Interim National Government

El-Rufai, in an interview with our correspondent, said the leaders around President Muhammadu Buhari resorted to ING after failing to get either Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele, and Senate President Ahmad Lawan to succeed Buhari.

According to the Kaduna State governor, some non-state actors have their eyes on an interim government as an outcome of the ongoing presidential election process.

I no longer believe in the circle around Buhari — El-Rufai attacks presidency again

Speaking on the people and forces he characterised as elements whose patterns and conduct are consistent with plans to subvert or topple a civilian-to-civilian transition after the next presidential election, he said: “It turned out that some of the wildest stories of conspiracy to derail the transition at best for APC to lose, preferably for the whole system to result in no election, leading to an interim arrangement began to rear their heads.”

He refused to name these “elements” because they are not worth the conventional Nigerian appellation of a political cabal.

The notion of a powerful cabal, according to him, admits a level of sophistication and discipline, which the group around President Buhari lacks.

I have no problem naming them. I’m not afraid of anybody. But for me, naming them is giving them traction. They are nothing. They are not capable of winning elections. They have no idea of electoral or political legitimacy. They can only hide behind the likes of President Buhari to achieve their objectives,” he said.

On contentious issues around President Buhari and Tinubu and the perceived mixed signals from the president’s lukewarm attitude to Tinubu’s campaigns, he insisted there are no mixed signals.

“President Buhari considers the APC like a child he conceived and held in pregnancy for 18 months and gave birth to. He will never, I am ready to stake my neck and my life, and President Buhari will never work against the APC. He will never work against the candidate of the APC even if the candidate is the devil himself,” El-Rufai said.

The governor insisted that the president is “a party man and an establishment person whose support for Asiwaju Tinubu is sure.”

Tinubu in last minute battle, fighting tooth and nail with Aso Rock Cabals, as plot to stop him thickens

Painting a picture and illustrating the operational mode of some disgruntled power-hungry cliques within the party that he admitted is hurting the APC, he said: “What is happening is that there are people around the president that had their presidential candidates.

They had two candidates that they preferred to succeed Buhari – Godwin Emefiele from the South and Ahmad Lawan from the North – and they got neither.”

Some farmers reportedly purchased the APC presidential nomination form for Emefiele, but the central banker did not contest the primaries.

On his part, Senate President Lawan contested and came fourth behind Tinubu, former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu told a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee a few hours before the primaries that Lawan was the consensus candidate with Buhari’s backing. The presidency denied the move and said it was not backing any candidate.

But both the Presidency and All Progressives Congress, APC, kept mum, as efforts to get their reaction last night proved abortive.

How former military general behind CBN naira swap, forced Tambuwal to step down for Atiku

A former military general has been accused of being behind the CBN naira swap strategy, Ejesgist News reports.

According to a source who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, claimed that a certain retired military commander is the mastermind behind the Naira swap strategy, which is being implemented in order to make a path that is less rocky for Atiku’s ascendance to power.

Atiku, Tinubu presidency divides northern elders as El-Rufai declares war against former military generals

Speaking further, the source revealed that in order for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to emerge as the PDP’s presidential candidate, the General played a behind-the-scenes role. He is said to have mobilized delegates and mounted pressure on other Northern aspirants to withdraw from the race. Additionally, the source disclosed that the withdrawal of Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal from the primary election, after it kicked off, was due to the pressure from the General

According to the source, “It was a retired general who was behind the CBN Naira exchange who was responsible for forcing Tambuwal to resign down so that Atiku could take his place. He is more aligned with Buhari, but in light of Tinubu’s victory in the APC primary election, he intends for the North to maintain its grip on political power.”

The insider went on to say that Atiku and some other PDP bigwigs have not been condemning the scarcity of Naira because they are the ones who are responsible for it.

Old Naira notes, no more legal tender in Nigeria, CBN declares

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declared that the old Naira Notes of N200, N500 and N1000 have ceased to be legal tender in Nigeria since the 10th of February, 2023.

The declaration was made by the Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bauchi, Haladu Idris Andaza while briefing Journalists on Monday at the CBN, branch in Bauchi.

CBN to print more new Naira notes abroad as Aisha Buhari’s elder brother fails to meet demands

He said that “In the last 24 hours, we have been inundated by questions from various angles of the general public about our operational guidelines on the old currency notes, be that as it may, there are so many questions here and there which people have been asking about.”

According to him, “So for the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that CBN is ready and is opened to receive all of those old notes based on certain conditions and criteria.”

“Customers are free to come to the Bank and deposit which they cannot do at the Commercial Banks anymore because the currency has seized to be a legal tender since the 10th of this month.

“Consequently, the management of the CBN decided that those customers will have a sigh of relief by coming to the offices of the CBN in all the 36 states in the Federation including FCT to deposit their money.

“The customer has to go to the CBN portal and fill a form in the portal, there will be a form there concerning this currency redesign and exchange.”

CBN deadline for old naira notes: Rejecting old naira notes now will land you in trouble

Andaza further explained that “After filling the form, you generate a code, you either print it or come with it in your mobile phone, give us the code and the information contained therein. In the form, you are expected to provide all the basic information about yourself, your account details and the amount you want to deposit.

By the time you have done it correctly, you come to the CBN where the code will be accepted from you as well as the money, process and confirm the genuineness or otherwise of the money to avoid receiving fake notes because there are some fake notes in circulation now.”

He warned that “If anyone wants to try us by bringing in fake notes, he should be ready to be arrested, so don’t go and print old fake naira notes and bring them to the CBN, whatever happens to you, don’t blame us, you caused it.”

He however assured that “We will receive the money from you and do our internal checks before we give you an acknowledgement which is evidence to show that we have collected that amount from you and we go ahead with our internal processes, after finishing with the internal processes, we now hit your account and credit it through your Commercial bank.

“All the Commercial banks are expected to bring all old notes deposited to us and we will collect, that is the final. Some of the Banks have started depositing with us because they want to close their books, as soon as they do that, they will not collect from customers again, that is the reason CBN decided to open this portal for the general public especially the vulnerable who are still having problems of cash used for trading and now that the deadline has expired, they need to deposit their money.

“The CBN is trying to minimize risk involved in losing that money, we are trying to minimize hardship also, we know that people are having some hardship, people are suffering, we not unmindful of that fact, that why the management of the CBN has magnanimously decided to open that portal to assist those who were unable to deposit the money into their bank accounts, that is our process flow in a nutshell.

“The portal will be there, opened for some time, depending on the circumstances and the directives from the management, we expect that within this period, people should have been able to deposit all they have, it is a privilege given to Nigerians to ensure that they deposited that money even though they are no longer legal tender.

“For the people in the remote areas, if you can recollect, we have gone round virtually all the villages in Bauchi state with some commercial banks asking the people to open accounts which many of them did and were able to deposit their money, I doubt if there are still people who have not keyed into the system now who are still having old money.

“We used the media, NOA and Traditional rulers just to let the people know, no limit to the amount that can be deposited provided the form was properly filled.

“There are a lot of firewalls that can protect the people accessing the portal, no any cause for alarm.”

In his remarks, CBN Team Lead, Bauchi who is the Director, Medical Services of the Apex Bank, Dr Abdulkadir Jibril explained that “It is a point we have made before, I just want to emphasize it, not everybody in Bauchi state is privileged to be at this meeting and so, there is the moral and professional responsibility on their shoulders to ensure that this information gets to every nook and cranny of the state and even beyond.”

He emphasized that “There is a limited time that has been given by the government and the law, just as I have emphasized earlier on, it is the magnanimity of the government, so, this is just an additional time and opportunity to assist people to get their monies into their bank accounts safely so that nobody misses a dime or loses any money.”

Jibrin concluded saying, “I am appealing to our people both men and women to carry or propagate this message everywhere so that people can do the needful.”

Yoruba Nation Agitators Plan To Disrupt Elections In South-West — IGP

Yoruba Nation Agitators Plan To Disrupt Elections In South-West. IGP has said that the Yoruba Nation agitators plan to disrupt elections in South-West geo-political zone of the country.

There have been pockets of agitations by the Yoruba Nation protesters of late but the police have warned that no disturbance of public peace would be allowed.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba has said that some separatist agitators under the aegis of Oduduwa Nation are amassing weapons in an attempt to disrupt the February 25 and March 11 general elections in the South-West geopolitical zone.

BREAKING: Wale Adeniran resigns as Chairman Yoruba Nation

The IGP disclosed this during a meeting with strategic police managers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

He also lamented that small arms and light weapons are being trafficked to advance political violence, political extremism and intolerance, while cyberbullying for political ends is on the rise daily.

Secessionist agitation gained prominence in the South-West geopolitical zone mid-2021. The agitation was champion by Yoruba Nation campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

However, the agitation slowed down with the raid of Igboho’s Ibadan residence by the Department of State Services on July 1, 2021. The agitator later escaped to Benin Republic where he was detained by the security agents in the francophone West African country. He was later released on bail but has not returned to Nigeria.

There have been pockets of agitations by Yoruba Nation protesters of late but the police have warned that no disturbance of public peace would be allowed.

Addressing police officers on Monday, the IGP said, “As you are aware, some crimes of national security importance could undermine our efforts towards entrenching a peaceful electioneering process, if not adequately curtailed.

“These include banditry and terrorism which has ravaged many communities in the North-west and North-Central with adverse effects on the economic and social well-being of the residents.

“Similarly, violent secessionist campaigns by IPOB/ESN members have been targeted at various symbols of democratic governance including INEC assets, police stations and personnel as well as other security agencies and Federal Government infrastructures, all in an effort to disrupt the 2023 general elections in the South East geopolitical zone.

“Other major crimes are the growing activities of the Oduduwa Nation Agitators who, from intelligence sources, have been attempting to amass weapons and mobilise other resources towards disrupting the peace, security and electoral process in the South-West geopolitical zone.”

The IGP charged the officers to conduct themselves “within the dictates of the Electoral Act and other laws”, while he assured Nigerians of the commitment of the police to a peaceful, secure, free, fair and credible elections.

Why I go to markets for campaign – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, stated that he is visiting the markets as part of his campaign because functional markets are the roots of transforming Nigeria from a consumption to a production nation.

On Monday evening, Obi disclosed this information during a one-on-one interview on Channels TV.

Speaking about his campaign’s economic ideas and implementation strategies, the LP presidential candidate stated, “My reason for going to markets is simple.

“I have always argued that we must be able to transition from consumption to production; however, you cannot discuss this without a foundation in functional markets.

“I must interact with merchants and businesspeople, as well as visit industrialists and farmers in order to learn about their problems and assure them of better times to come.

“Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises are the largest employer of labour and the most productive sector of any economy,” the Obi said in reference to his economic plan if he were to be elected president.

Obi further stated that China, India, and Indonesia all operate under the same economic system.

In Indonesia, over 90 percent of businesses are in this sector in terms of employment, and they create over 70 percent of all jobs.

In China, over 60 percent of businesses are in this sector, and Vietnam has a similar situation. These are countries that are doing extremely well today and are very productive and export-oriented.

Continuing, Obi said, “I believe you should study and listen to this session because it will propel the goals we set out to achieve.

I believe that the commitment required to lift people out of poverty is immeasurable.

“What Nigerian governments have not done in the past is consider where they have been and where they stand.

“In 2012, unemployment was approximately 10 to 12 percent, whereas it is now approximately 33 percent.

“Our poverty was 55 million dollars.” The current poverty rate is 33%, or approximately 95 million people, and multidimensional poverty has increased to 133 million.

These are issues that a new government should address.

He added that the government’s physical support is what allows these micro Small businesses to regain confidence.

Obi emphasized, “We will address the issue of life and property security by securing the country first.”

Thus, we will be able to allow our farmers to return to agriculture and increase agricultural output.

UK, US Intelligence practitioners project Atiku to win 2023 presidential election

UK, US Intelligence practitioners project Atiku to win 2023 presidential election

The Intelligence practitioners have projected the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to win the Nigerian 2023 election.

Ejesgist News understands that the presidential election and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 25, 2023.

The interim report from nine monthly studies led by Dr. Oludare Ogunlana of June Group Research and Council for African Security Affairs (CASA) with other Intelligence practitioners in the United States, Europe, and Nigeria pointed to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party of Nigeria as a potential winner.

Wike mocks Atiku as PDP cancels presidential rally in Rivers, says Tinubu is Nigeria’s next president

The interim report claimed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is expected to garner 64% from the three zones in the North.

Atiku was rated higher than other candidates from All Progressive Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), using four key variables: political geography, Religion, Resources, and Class.

According to the group, “The study’s scope is limited to observing political actors and interviews with stakeholders in organizations from across six zones of Nigeria and the Nigerians in the Diaspora: political leaders, women groups, religious organizations, civil societies, trade unions, and youth organizations.

In each interview, we focused on five areas: the personality of the candidates, ethnic influence, religion, power of incumbency, voters’ behavior, emotions’ role, political socialization, and tolerance of diversity of political views.

The study that started in May 2022 accurately predicted the outcome of the PDP and APC primaries and the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Senator Bola Tinubu as candidates for their respective parties.

We identified where the political influencers, religious leaders, organizations, and Nigerians in the Diaspora stood with voting President in February 2023 and how it aligned to victory for each candidate.

In addition, we gathered data from facilitated workshops and interactive survey sessions with Nigerian political thought leaders, which include lawyers, political activists, and former and current serving political office holders.

While we respect various polls that have put a particular candidate as the preferred candidate to win the election, we state that data alone does not speak for itself significantly when such data is based on manipulation and sectional polling.

The result of every data must be put into context, including understanding the people, culture, pattern, geographical spread of the platform, and historical antecedents.

“In conclusion, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is expected to garner 64% from the three zones in the North, rake 45% from the South-South region where his running mates come from, acquire 37 % from the South-East with 27% from the South-West, which is the stronghold of the APC candidate.”
