Give Account Of N10bn Spent On Firms Registration – Reps Cttee Directs BPE

The House of Representatives has urged the Bureau for Public Enterprise, BPE, to account for about N10 billion allegedly used to register two companies for the Nigeria Postal Service, NIPOST.

NAN reports that the Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Bamidele Salam, made the call in Abuja at the resumed investigative hearing of the committee.

“No reasonable Nigerian will believe that N10.4 billion was spent to register the two companies.

”These companies eventually folded up one year after takeoff,” he said.

He also said the companies, NIPOST Transport and Logistics Ltd., and NIPOST Property reportedly took off in May 2023 and folded up through a Presidential directive in May 2024.B

The BPE Head of Finance and Accounts who stood in for the Director-General of the Agency, Mr Imam Rilwan, told the committee that the said amount of N10 million was given to the two companies for their take-off.

He said that about N400 million was given to the BPE to prepare the ground for the takeoff of the companies.

He said the issue of registering the two companies for NIPOST was approved in 2017, paving the way for the BPE to expend about N423 million in registering and carrying out other activities for the eventual takeoff of the companies.

He said when the money was eventually released in 2023 the bureau had to recover it, adding that the N423 million given to the BPE was used to rent office accommodation among other essential services.

He said that while the Bureau paid rent for the two companies in 2022, the companies took possession of the offices in May 2023 and they folded up in May 2024.

He said all property belonging to the two companies had been officially handed over to NIPOST management.

Responding, Salam said spending money from the government coffers before it was released violated the provisions of the Public Procurement Act

  • Stop Arresting People Without Thorough Investigation – AGF Fagbemi Warns Anti-Graft Agencies

    AGF Fagbemi

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has issued a stern warning to anti-graft agencies in the country against arresting individuals without conducting a thorough investigation.

Fagbemi noted this while declaring that any Nigerian convicted of corruption should not be granted a state pardon.

On arresting individuals considered suspects, the AGF stressed the importance of having solid evidence before calling individuals in for questioning.

During a roundtable discussion hosted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for state attorneys general in Abuja on Monday, Fagbemi said: “I will suggest in our next constitution review exercise that we expunge those found guilty of corruption from benefiting from powers of ‘Prerogative of Mercy’ to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The AGF emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, particularly the Attorneys General, in the battle against corruption.

Fagbemi urged the Attorneys General to reject nepotism, political persecution, rivalry, and prejudice in their efforts to combat corruption, even if it means disappointing their governors.

He further stated that there should be no justification for corruption or criminal activities.

He insisted that their legal assessments of cases must be grounded in factual evidence, as is customary in more developed nations, and remarked,

“We must resist succumbing to public opinion. In Nigeria, we are divided along political lines.”

“Let us be thorough and take our time before inviting someone for questioning. Don’t do a shoddy job and be quick to say we have caught a big fish…You will catch a big fish. If it is two or three big fish you are able to get in a year, and you are thorough, it is alright.”

The AGF also counselled against filing bogus counts of charges against defendants just to generate frenzy in the public against the suspect.

“Nobody wants a 50-count charge…make it five or six and be sure. Make sure you get him (suspect) in,”
    he added.

  • NOA, NPC, UNICEF Begin Birth Registration Exercise In Akwa Ibom

NOA, NPC, UNICEF Begin Birth Registration Exercise In Akwa Ibom

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), has launched a nationwide birth registration social mobilization drive in Akwa Ibom State.

The State Director of NOA, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, who announced this during a press conference in Uyo, the state capital, on Monday, said the exercise was aimed at ensuring that every child in the state, and Nigeria at large, has access to education, healthcare, and other essential services.

He explained that the drive, which will run from August to November 2024, will focus on the registration of all children aged 0-5 years, providing them with a National Identification Number (NIN) free of charge upon face capturing.

While urging parents and guardians to take advantage of the opportunity and register their wards at the nearest NPC centre, the director emphasized that birth registration is the first legal acknowledgment of a child’s existence and is essential for safeguarding their rights and privileges both now and in the future.

He said the process is simple and free and requires only supporting documents such as an immunization card or an existing birth certificate of a parent or guardian.

The statement in part read, “We are excited to announce the launch of a nationwide birth registration social mobilization drive. Birth registration is a fundamental right of every child, and this initiative seeks to highlight its importance to the child, the family, the community, and the nation at large.

“Moreover, accurate birth registration is vital for national planning and development, as it provides the government with essential data to plan for education, healthcare, and other public services.

“By registering a child’s birth, families ensure that their children are recognized by the state, which is the first step in protecting them from abuse, exploitation, and statelessness.”

In his remarks, the Akwa Ibom State Director of the National Population Commission (NPC), Emmanuel Edem, said every child has the right to a legal identity, regretting that “a large number of children born today do not officially exist.”

According to him, “These children are deprived of birth certificates, which are their first legal proof of existence and identity simply because their parents cannot afford it, cannot access it, or face some other barrier to accessing registration services.”

He said that without a birth certificate, children are invisible to their governments, which means they may miss out on essential programs like child protection, healthcare, and education that help secure their most fundamental rights.

“A birth certificate is proof of identification. Children without a birth certificate are unable to prove their age, making them more vulnerable to violence, abuse, and exploitation. These children risk being trafficked, recruited into armed forces, or forced into early marriage or child labour.

“If they come into contact with the justice system, they may be prosecuted as adults and exposed to even more violence,” he added.

In a goodwill message, the State Comptroller of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Jummai Damisa-Babson, who was represented by an assistant comptroller, Prince Anono, lauded the organizers of the event and pledged the NIS’s commitment to the success of the program.

He said, “We are stakeholders in issues of identity. For us in the immigration office, the date of birth is very important. That is why our database is synchronized with that of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). We want people to abide by this so that discrepancies in age, as we normally witness, will reduce.”

  • Ajaero: ‘Necessary Step’ – Odua Peoples Assembly Backs Arrest Of NLC President

Ajaero: ‘Necessary Step’ – Odua Peoples Assembly Backs Arrest Of NLC President

The Odua Peoples Assembly, OPA, has backed the Department of State Services, DSS’ arrest of Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC.

DAILY POST reported that Joe Ajaero was arrested by the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday as he tried to board an aeroplane to the United Kingdom for a labour meeting.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that the police had invited and interrogated Ajaero over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony.

His invitation came in the wake of a night raid by the police on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja.

The police are alleging a link between the labour leader and a Briton, Andrew Wynne, who has been accused of financing the recent #EndBadGovernance or #Hunger protest in the country to allegedly overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

Following Ajaero’s first appearance on August 29, the police, in another letter signed by the Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ibitoye Alajide, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, Abuja, asked him to appear again on Thursday, September 5, alongside the NLC General Secretary “to answer questions over alleged criminal intimidation, conducts likely to cause a breach of public peace, and malicious damage to property.”

After his arrest on Monday, Odua Peoples Assembly said the arrest is lawful and necessary for the stability of the country.

“His arrest is not only justified but crucial to safeguarding the integrity of our nation,” a statement signed by Adeyemi Olamide Shola, its Deputy Speaker, said.

The assembly described the NLC President as an alleged lawbreaker, insisting that his arrest won’t cause anarchy.

It said that the NLC President must have taken some actions that undermine national peace and security.

“Much like other culprits already in detention, Ajaero must face the consequences of his actions,” they said.

“To suggest he should be spared implies that he is untouchable, and this is unacceptable. His arrest by the DSS is necessary, timely, and demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of justice.”

The group then called on the DSS to intensify its investigations and place under surveillance all suspected accomplices to this undemocratic plot.

  • Judge Delays Trump’s Sentencing in Hush Money Case Until After Election

Judge Delays Trump’s Sentencing in Hush Money Case Until After Election

In a significant legal development, Justice Juan M. Merchan has postponed the sentencing of former U.S. President Donald Trump in his hush money case, pushing the date to November 26, three weeks after the presidential election. The delay comes as Trump continues to navigate the complexities of his criminal conviction while simultaneously campaigning to return to the White House.

Originally scheduled for September 18, Trump’s sentencing will now take place just before Thanksgiving, offering the Republican nominee a much-needed reprieve during the final stretch of his presidential run. Justice Merchan, who is also considering a defense request to overturn the conviction on immunity grounds, stated that the postponement was necessary to avoid any perception of political bias.

In his four-page decision, Merchan explained that his intention was to ensure the court remained an impartial entity, free from any suggestion that the trial or sentencing might influence the outcome of the election. “The Court is a fair, impartial, and apolitical institution,” Merchan wrote, clarifying that the delay should dispel any notions of election interference.

The Trump legal team had actively sought the delay, arguing that proceeding with sentencing during the campaign would unjustly influence voters. They further contended that Trump should be given time to consider his legal options, especially after Merchan decides on their motion to vacate the conviction. Trump’s defense cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s July ruling on presidential immunity as a key factor in their argument for overturning the verdict.

Justice Merchan has set November 12 as the date to rule on the motion to dismiss the case based on the Supreme Court’s decision. This ruling will occur two weeks before the new sentencing date, adding another layer of uncertainty to Trump’s legal and political future.

By postponing the sentencing, the court ensures that the outcome of Trump’s trial will not influence voters’ decisions, allowing the election to proceed without the added factor of the former president’s potential imprisonment.

  • Road Crashes: 2,776 Deaths In Seven Months Unacceptable – SGF, Akume

Road Crashes: 2,776 Deaths In Seven Months Unacceptable – SGF, Akume

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume says it is unacceptable for 2,776 people to be killed and 16,309 others injured in road traffic crashes between January and July this year.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of the FRSC Mobile App and National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), Akume explained that between January and December last year, 5,081 people were killed, while 31,874 were injured in road mishaps.

According to him, appraising the app was intended to raise awareness and sensitise both drivers and passengers on the potential causative factors of road traffic crashes in the country.

He expressed optimism that the app would aid emergency reporting, detecting black spots, issuing eyewitness reports, detecting excess speed and alerting both drivers and passengers, saying that motorists could also use the app to verify when their license or vehicle papers expired, among other features and benefits.

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, stated that over the years, the FRSC has been active in formulating and implementing policies aimed at improving road safety administration in the country.

According to him, “the FRSC Mobile App is a software application that can be used on our phones to alert us on sensitive road safety issues through programmed features such as excessive speeding, dangerous driving and verifying our vehicle documents, among others.”

He further explained that the proper application of the features was expected to drastically reduce injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes.

He believed that in this era of technological advancement, FRSC cannot afford to lag behind, pointing out that it was in this light that the corps had decided to adapt and evolve its operations into the global network service system.

The Corps Marshal said that the NACRIS was designed to promote a multi-sectoral approach to crash reporting and data storage, stressing that phase two of the NACRIS project would focus on developing a digitalised crash data template based on inputs from phase 1.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman, House of Reps Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adeshida, believed that with the new app and the ongoing efforts to amend the 2007 FRSC Act by the House Committee, the FRSC was advancing towards a 21st-century standard in technology, ensuring enhanced road safety measures.

Sadiq-Aliyu said that on August 24, the command arrested three suspects, including a woman, in connection with a suspected case of criminal house trespass and theft, and recovered suspected stolen items.

“The suspects were arrested by the operatives at GRA Katsina Divisional Police Headquarters following the receipt of a report on their nefarious activities that they criminally conspired and trespassed into a house situated at Modoji quarters, Katsina.

Stolen by the suspects were freezer, plasma television, computer, dining table, chairs, drawers, mattresses, home theatre, inverter, air conditioners and generators all valued at N10 million.

“Promptly, detectives swung into action and successfully traced and arrested the suspects.

“In the course of investigation, the suspects confessed that they committed the offence and further mentioned one Aminu Masa, now at large, as their accomplice, and one Mariya Adamu as receiver of their stolen properties

“Efforts are being intensified with a view to arresting the fleeing suspect as the investigation proceeds,” Sadiq-Aliyu said.

In a related development, the command’s spokesman added that on 4th September, based on credible intelligence, the command succeeded in arresting a 12-man gang of notorious vandals of armoured electric cables that specialised in terrorising the Katsina metropolis.

He said the suspects were arrested following the receipt of a report through a good samaritan on their nefarious activities at Shaiskawa quarters, Katsina.

A patrol team was dispatched promptly to the scene, where they arrested suspects and recovered from them bundles of suspected vandalized electric cables, iron rods, hammer, and axe.

In the course of investigation, the suspects confessed to the commission of the offence and further mentioned others, seven in number, all at large, as their accomplices, and one Aminu Manya-Manya as the receiver of their stolen properties.

“Efforts are being intensified to ensure the arrest of the fleeing suspects as the investigation proceeds,” Sadiq-Aliyu said.

The spokesman said the suspects were intercepted at Kofar Marusa quarters, suspected to have vandalised the Kofar Marusa drainage, as 51 full-length 10mm and 16mm iron rods were recovered from their possession.

According to him, the suspects confessed to the commission of the offence, as investigation is still ongoing.

  • Social Media Is Exclusively Meant For Men – Nigerian Pharmacist Says

Social Media is ‘Exclusively Meant for Men, Claims Nigerian Pharmacist Maketere Ugwu Amoke.

-social media platforms are “exclusively meant for men,” according to a recent, controversial statement on Facebook by Nigerian pharmacist Maketere Ugwu Amoke, claiming the negative exposure that women get online subjects them to.

Amoke said, “Social media is only for guys; women get destroyed with social media because exposure destroys women. Yea, it does,” he said on Thursday, September 5.

His statement has since set off an intense debate on social media, as users continued to express themselves about the matter. Some supported Amoke by citing how such pressures or visibility platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook provide may have negative implications for women with respect to body image, self-esteem, and self-comparison from a social perspective.

Others have attacked his position as being both sexist and dismissive of the toll living in this digital age takes, one that equally affects men and women. They further believe that social media, while flawed, is not an enemy to women but has opened up opportunities in ways of empowerment, connection, and personal growth.

Amoke’s comment borders on broader discussions that have to do with social media and their effects on mental health and societal roles, especially in a world where gender equality and freedom of expression top the agendas of most discussions.

Despite the backlash, the pharmacist has yet to clarify or retract his comments, leaving many to wonder if he indeed stands by his controversial claim.

NAFDAC Destroys Fake, Adulterated Products In Souteast

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control said it has destroyed fake, adulterated and unregistered food, drug and cosmetic products worth about N2.7 billion seized in the South-East.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this in a brief remark during the exercise in Enugu, noting that such products would have compromised the health of over three million people.

Represented by a Director of the South-East Zone, Mr Martins Iluyomade, the DG said the products would have increased the health burden on the already overstretched health institutions in the country.

According to her, the products would have increased the poverty rate by making people spend money they should use to improve their livelihoods on medical trips.

Adeyeye said many had died untimely due to consumption of poisons, stressing that the event was to give a hint to the people of the South-East that it was no longer business as usual to merchants of death who are hell-bent on destroying other people for their selfish economic gain.

I will like to appreciate other sister agencies for their cooperation, without which we cannot succeed in this endeavour.

“NAFDAC will not rest on its oars until every household in the country can buy any regulated product without fear of substandard, adulteration or fake.

We want the public to join hands with us in this struggle by reporting to us unscrupulous manufacturers and businessmen who engage in illicit practices to report to the nearest NAFDAC office for prompt investigation,” Adeyeye said.

On the issue of fuel subsidies, Utomi advocated for the reintroduction of a targeted subsidy regime. He argued that essential sectors, like fuel for public use, should be subsidized, drawing parallels to agricultural subsidies in the United States.

Tinubu-Led Government Assures End to Nationwide Fuel Scarcity by Weekend.

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the ongoing fuel scarcity will be resolved by the weekend, following concerns about the widespread hardship caused by the situation. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, made the announcement on September 5 after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima and Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Lokpobiri stated that President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about the difficulties being faced by the public due to the fuel scarcity. He emphasized that the government is not fixing fuel prices, but expects prices to stabilize once product availability increases.

“We believe that between now and the weekend, there will be availability of products across the country,” Lokpobiri said. “The prices may vary across regions, but once there is enough supply, the price will stabilize.”

The minister urged Nigerians to avoid panic buying, reassuring them that there is sufficient petrol in the country to meet demand. He reiterated that the fuel sector is fully deregulated, and prices are expected to adjust naturally as supply improves.

The scarcity and subsequent price hikes have significantly affected transport fares, with prices soaring by over 50% in several major cities. The NNPCL recently increased petrol prices to between N855 and N897 per litre, depending on the region, from the previous N568-N617 per litre.

The government’s intervention is expected to bring relief to Nigerians as the weekend approaches, alleviating the transportation and cost-of-living challenges posed by the fuel shortage.

Tinubu Tolerating Selective Injustice Against Igbos ,  Lawyer Ejimakor  Alleged.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused President Bola Tinubu of tolerating what he describes as “selective injustice” against the Igbo people. Ejimakor’s allegations suggest that this form of discrimination has worsened under Tinubu’s administration.

Ogun Government Calls for Collective Action to Eradicate Open Defecation

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ejimakor argued that while Igbos experienced some level of selective injustice during the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, the situation significantly deteriorated under President Muhammadu Buhari and has now reached “genocidal proportions” under Tinubu.

Ejimakor’s post reads: “What is now emerging in the open (thanks to social media) as institutionalized ‘selective injustice’ against #Ndigbo has always been there. It reduced slightly under OBJ & GEJ, peaked to a new high under PMB & has attained genocidal proportions. Shocking that TINUBU tolerates it.”

The accusation comes amid ongoing claims of marginalization from the people of the Southeast, which have fueled the agitation for the secessionist movement of Biafra. Ejimakor’s comments add to the growing discourse on the treatment of the Igbo people under successive Nigerian governments.

Kehinde highlighted the current administration’s unwavering commitment to eliminating open defecation, stressing that collaboration with the private sector, community leaders, and Community Development Associations (CDAs) is essential to raising awareness and educating citizens on the dangers associated with the practice.

“Public awareness campaigns are the first step in eliminating this menace,” Kehinde stated. He added that the government has already taken significant measures by constructing public toilets and sanitation facilities across the state, encouraging residents to take ownership of these amenities.

In a bid to bolster these efforts, Kehinde revealed that the Ogun State Government has partnered with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency to launch a joint campaign targeting open defecation along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway corridor. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the issue comprehensively.

Kehinde emphasized that tackling open defecation is critical not only for reducing the spread of diseases but also for promoting economic growth and enhancing the overall quality of life for Ogun State citizens.

El-Rufai Dismisses Concerns Over Social Media Posts, Says He Doesn’t Care About Interpretations.

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has made it clear that he is unfazed by how his social media posts are interpreted by the public. In a post shared on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on the evening of August 31, El-Rufai stated that he doesn’t “give a damn” about how his posts are interpreted, misinterpreted, or re-interpreted.

His declaration came just hours after he shared a cryptic message on the platform, where he asserted that falsehood, no matter how long it stands, will eventually fall, allowing the truth to prevail.

El-Rufai’s recent posts have sparked discussions online, with many wondering about the context behind his statements. Despite the stir, the former governor appears resolute in his stance on public opinion and social media discourse.
