Rivers State Police Command reports that its officers have rescued a kidnap victim.

The police rescued the victim, a teenager, who was kidnapped in Enugu and transported to Port Harcourt in a ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ bag.

The State police commissioner, Mr Olatunji Disu, made this disclosure during a news conference in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Disu said the teenager was repeatedly raped by her kidnappers after being taken to Port Harcourt, adding that the crime was uncovered when officers in Abuloma Police Station received credible intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of one of the suspects.

“Upon receiving the information, operatives were swiftly dispatched to the area, and they arrested one male suspect.

“Officers rescued the teenage girl (name withheld) who had been held against her will by the suspect.

    Disu said.

The police commissioner further said that, upon arriving in Port Harcourt, the victim was taken to the residence of an alleged internet fraudster, stressing that the alleged fraudster and another suspect repeatedly had carnal knowledge of the teenager.

“The victim has undergone medical examination and treatment, while the suspects are in our custody,”
    he said.

Edo Guber: Socio-Political Group Warns Against Importation Of Thugs

About three days before the governorship election in Edo State, a socio-political group, Edo Collectives, has warned against importing thugs into the state.

The Edo State governorship election is slated for Saturday, 21st September 2024.

There are concerns that the exercise will turn violent following reports of the influx of thugs into the state.

However, in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, the Edo Collectives “warned that any thug that is coming to disrupt the election would regret his action”.

The Secretary of the group, Musa Osagie, who signed the statement, noted that there are reports that the All Progressives Congress, APC, has imported thugs from Kogi and Imo States.

“The people of Edo State are determined to elect who will govern them and thugs will not be allowed to disrupt the election.

“Those that want to subvert the will of the people by importing thugs into Edo State will not get away with it. The votes of the people must count,” the statement added.

The group further insisted that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, must ensure a level playing field for all participants in the governorship election.

“Edolites are prepared to ensure that their votes count and will ensure the protection of their votes,” Osagie stressed.

The group called on INEC and the police to ensure a free and fair election.

DAILY POST reports that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, refused to sign the Peace Accord ahead of the governorship poll.

Edo Guber: PDP declines as APC, other parties sign Peace Accord

The PDP hinged the decision on the arrest and detention of some of their members by the Police. The PDP governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, had declared that the party would only sign the Peace Accord if the arrested members were released.

However, the APC and 16 other political parties signed the Peace Accord on Thursday, 12th September 2024 in Benin City.

  • Yahaya Bello Visited EFCC Headquarters, Officials Didn’t Interrogate Him – Media Team Insists

    Yahaya Bello

A former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello’s media team, has insisted that he was at the facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Earlier, the team said the ex-governor honoured the invitation after consultation with his legal team and political associates.

Reacting, the anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale denied that the former governor was in its custody, adding that Bello remains wanted.

But Bello’s team, in another statement by its Director, Ohiare Michael said Bello was at the EFCC office alongside his successor, Usman Ododo.

He added that the EFCC did not, however, interrogate him and told him he could leave.

Michael said, “ Earlier today, we reported the voluntary visit of former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission office to honour the Commission’s invitation.

“In the statement, we reiterated the former Governor’s great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority and stressed that all the while, he only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process.

“The EFCC did not, however, interrogate him as officials told him he could leave. We don’t know what this means yet. As we write, Yahaya Bello has left the EFCC office. He was accompanied there by the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo.

“Recall that the case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. The former Governor decided to honour the invitation to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear. “

  • Local Marketers Are Refusing To Buy Our Cheap Products – Dangote Refinery

The management of Dangote Refinery has raised alarm over refusal of marketers to buy their products because it is cheap.

The company cited lack of support from petroleum marketers because of its low pricing strategies.

During a Twitter Space session organized by Nairametrics, Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Dangote Industries Limited, revealed that over 95% of Nigeria’s petroleum product importers are not purchasing from Dangote Refinery.

He noted that the refinery is struggling to sell about 29 tankers of diesel per day due to the low patronage from local importers.

Edwin further explained that, as a result of this weak domestic demand, Dangote Refinery exports most of its diesel and aviation fuel.

He also mentioned that petroleum marketers in Nigeria have written to President Bola Tinubu, expressing concerns that the refinery’s local prices, which have dropped from N1,200 to N1,000 and now N900 per litre, are negatively impacting their businesses.

“Over 95 percent of petroleum product importers in Nigeria are not buying from the Dangote Refinery. The Dangote Refinery struggles to sell about 29 tankers of diesel per day due to low patronage from local petroleum products importers.”

“As a result of this poor local patronage, Dangote refinery exports most of its diesel and aviation fuel”.

“Petroleum product marketers in Nigeria have written to President Bola Tinubu to complain that the refinery local prices which have dropped from N1,200 to N1,000 and now N900 per litre are impacting their businesses negatively,” he said.

DAILY POST learnt that an unidentified intending tenant had disappeared with two children in the Igando area of Ilesa, Osun State.

It was gathered that the intending tenant allegedly abducted the children, whose ages ranged between four and two, after cleaning her one-room apartment in a ‘face-me-and-face-you’ building around the Cele area of Igando on Saturday.

Sources revealed that the tenant had paid for half a year’s rent to one of the existing tenants in the house.

  • Super Eagles: Peterside Compares Eguavoen To Peseiro

Super Eagles: Peterside Compares Eguavoen To Peseiro

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Idah Peterside has compared the differences in the Super Eagles squad under former head coach Jose Peseiro and current interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.

Recall that Peseiro was the coach of the Super Eagles until March 2024 when he left his position upon the expiration of his contract.

The Portuguese led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, where they lost to Ivory Coast 2-1.

Following Peseiro’s exit from the Super Eagles, Finidi George was made the interim coach and was subsequently given the position permanently by the Nigeria Football Federation.

But Finidi resigned from his position after failing to record a victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin and South Africa a few months ago.

Following Finidi’s exit, the NFF ultimately appointed Eguavoen as interim coach.

Eguavoen led the Super Eagles against Benin and Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers in September.

Asked about the differences between the Super Eagles under Peseiro and Eguavoen, Peterside told Channels Television:

“Let’s go back to the finals. For me, the finals and the game we played against South Africa were the killer for me. After those games, I just said sack this coach [Peseiro] and when the coach of South Africa came online, came on air, I was in South Africa then, and he said he was shocked to hear the Nigerian coach say don’t go forward, don’t cross the line, defend and he is like with this kind of players, with this kind of capacity.

“We have the best set of players in Africa. Look at their names, Iwobi, Osimhen, you know, Lookman, we have some of the best players. You can’t cage these kinds of players, you give them expression, Austin [Eguavoen] has done that.

“We had an expression in Uyo, we scored three goals, we had an expression in Kigali, the goalkeeper saved them, they carried the goalkeeper after the end of the game, which means we came out to attack, this is what they are talking about.

“When this team begins to build and play with this kind of confidence, we would be absolutely unstoppable and he made some decisions that we are happy about.

“You know he benched Osimhen, not because Osimhen wasn’t good enough because Osimhen hasn’t played any competitive game yet and it would be dangerous for the player to just put him into a tournament or into a game, he will get injured, that was professionally handled.

“The game against Benin, Iwobi didn’t play well right and he was comfortable enough not to play him in the second game, that is leadership for me.

“Eguavoen was the captain when we played, he was the captain of the national team, so he is a big boy now, he is part of the system and he is making the right decision. It is just for me, we are on the right channel.”

Transfer: Trabzonspor Can’t Pay €15 For Onuachu — Dogan

Onuachu spent last season on loan at the Turkish Super Lig champions, scoring 17 goals across all competitions.

The Black Sea Storm are desperate to sign the Nigeria international on a permanent contract but are finding it difficult to meet Southampton’s valuation.

Dogan revealed Trabzonspor have offered €8m for the player but Southampton are demanding €15m for the striker.

He said the club can’t pay the fee for a player of Onuachu’s age.
“Onuachu was a player who played for us on loan last season. His club insistently demands around 15 million euros. We offered 8 million euros with bonuses,” he told NTVSpor.

“Trabzonspor cannot give 15 million euros to a football player right now. A player is 20-22 years old, it is our coach’s request, then it will be considered.

  • Tinubu’s Draconian Policies Will Throw Nigeria Into Extreme Authoritarian State – Igbo Group

Tinubu’s Draconian Policies Will Throw Nigeria Into Extreme Authoritarian State – Igbo Group

An Igbo think-tank group, the AlaIgbo Development Foundation (ADF), has warned President Bola Tinubu not to plunge Nigeria into another ugly era of extreme authoritarianism and totalitarianism.

The group condemned in totality the ongoing incessant and serial harassment, arrest, and intimidation mounted against the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, by the security agencies of the federal government of Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement issued in Enugu on Wednesday and jointly signed by Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie and Mr. Abia Onyike, the group’s National President and National Secretary respectively. The group condemned the intimidation and harassment of civil society leaders.

The group accused President Bola Tinubu of selling out to international capitalist cartels to the detriment of the economic well-being of Nigerians.

The statement reads: “It is unfortunate that President Tinubu has decided to toe this ignoble line whereby he uses the security agencies to deploy force and intimidation to implement his anti-people economic policies, after having sold out to international finance capital and the imperialist metropolis of the North-Atlantic Western powers.”

The group called on President Tinubu to retrace his steps by reviewing his draconian economic policies before it gets too late.

“After a critical review of Ajaero’s recent encounters with the security agencies, the ADF has come to the inescapable conclusion that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is hell-bent on plunging Nigeria backwards into the abyss of draconian rule, characterized by illegal arrests and punitive detention of innocent citizens.

“The ADF views this ill-advised strategy of intimidation and harassment of civil society leaders as an admission by the Tinubu administration that it has failed woefully to defend the nation’s democracy because of the catastrophic failure it has recorded in its economic policies, which have yielded nothing but mass poverty and an unbelievable level of hunger amongst the citizenry.

“In fact, we dare to aver that the Tinubu administration now constitutes a major affront to Nigeria’s hard-won democracy. It is unfortunate that President Tinubu has decided to toe this ignoble line whereby he uses the security agencies to deploy force and intimidation to implement his anti-people economic policies, after having sold out to international finance capital and the imperialist metropolis of the North-Atlantic Western powers.

“The ADF wishes to call on President Tinubu to retrace his steps by reviewing his draconian economic policies before it gets too late.

“He should review his anti-people policies now instead of using crude tactics to crack down on leaders of mass organizations, thereby plunging Nigeria into another ugly era of extreme authoritarianism and totalitarianism.

“The ADF supports the intervention of popular-democratic organizations, the labour movement, and civil society groups in their opposition against Tinubu’s vicious economic policies.

“We appreciate the fact that the Nigerian labour movement today represents the only strong banner of opposition that can challenge the Tinubu administration after the National Assembly and the Judiciary have been weakened. This explains the desperation of the regime and its determination to decimate the leadership of the labour movement.

“The ADF also condemns without any iota of equivocation, the invasion of the offices of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects (SERAP) in Abuja by security agencies.

“The invasion of the Abuja office of SERAP followed an ultimatum made by the organization to the Tinubu administration to reverse the current petroleum price hike introduced by NNPC, which is an agency of the Federal Government.

“ADF believes that there is no way Nigeria’s democracy can be consolidated under horrible economic policies where the masses are traumatized by poverty and pestilence.”

Chukwueze was brought off at halftime, with Moses Simon taking his place.

Speaking at his post-match interview, Eguavoen said the AC Milan winger had to be replaced because he had a yellow card and was tormenting the hosts.

“He [Chukwueze] is very good, he’s one of our good players. Today, we came up with a strategy, he got a yellow card and he was tormenting you [Rwanda] guys,” Eguavoen told reporters.

“We had three players on yellow cards so it’s kind of a risk also. We have to make some substitutions and we have players who can go forward also.

“We thought Chukwueze should rest not because he’s not playing well but because of the risk of getting a second yellow card.”

  • NCC Arrests Three Booksellers For Piracy In Rivers

Three bookshop owners have been arrested by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in Rivers State over their alleged involvement in book piracy.

Mr Abdul Babatunde, the Director, NCC, Port Harcourt Directorate, disclosed this on Tuesday shortly after an anti-piracy operation within the Port Harcourt metropolis.

Babatunde stated that the commission confiscated suspected pirated books worth N3 million during operation.

He said that the suspects were currently undergoing investigation and would be prosecuted after facts about their involvement in the act had been established.

The NCC official said it was part of the commission’s mandate to protect and promote the rights of authors and other investors in the copyright ecosystem.

According to him, the commission also ensures that authors and artists get the rewards of their hard work.

“The commission is committed to seeing that the activities of pirates in Rivers and Bayelsa are reduced to the barest minimum,”
    he said.

Babatunde said that the NCC Director-General, Dr John Asien, had zero tolerance for piracy and violation of the copyright laws.

He warned booksellers, printers, and importers against stealing people’s intellectual property.

The director also urged members of the public not to patronise pirates, saying, “Doing so is a criminal offence.”

“Patronising pirates is a contravention of Section 44 of the Copyright Act, 2022. Patronising piracy is to kill creativity and the economy.

“Let us buy our books from publishers and authorized dealers, and not from middlemen, printers, and roadside dealers,

    ” he said.

Babatunde urged members of the public to support the commission with credible information capable of enabling it to tackle piracy in the state.

One of the suspects, Mrs Chinyere Ezediora, told newsmen that she joined the business newly and had no knowledge of the anti-piracy law.

“I heard about book piracy for the first time when the commission came for arrest in our shop.
