  • EPL: Man Utd Set To Demolish Old Trafford

EPL: Man Utd Set To Demolish Old Trafford

Manchester United are now looking to pull down Old Trafford if a new £2billion mega stadium is approved.

New minority owner of the club, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has made no secret of his desire to build a new ground.

In a bid to achieve this, Ratcliffe set up the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force which has Lord Coe and Gary Neville, in February.

The plan is to build a new 100,000-seater stadium which has been dubbed as a potential ‘Wembley of the North’.

It was previously claimed Old Trafford would be scaled down in capacity and kept to preserve the club’s history and provide a home for United’s women and academy teams if a new stadium was built on adjacent land.

But The Mail is now reporting that the famous old ground is now more likely to be demolished.

It is believed that keeping a scaled back Old Trafford is unrealistic due to the complex nature of the plans, as well as the cost of what would effectively be a separate stadium project.

  • LP: Nobody Unseated You, The Constitution Did, Sheathe Your Sword — Obi Tells Abure

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections has asked the party’s former Chairman, Julius Abure, to sheath his sword.

He urged him and others to join hands with the National Caretaker Committee to rebuild the party.

Obi, who was represented by Datti Baba-Ahmed, stated this at the inaugural meeting of the caretaker committee of the party held in Abuja on Tuesday night.

He stated categorically that nobody but the constitution of the party unseated former chairman Abure after the expiration of his tenure.

Obi said: “Listen, my friend, no governor unseated Abure, the constitution unseated him. Abure’s time elapsed. Nobody unseated him. As of today, Abure is our good friend and a loyal member. We want him back in the fold; we have roles for him to play.

“We didn’t have crisis. We managed a transition that was a bit bumpy and that was it. I tell you, no other political party of our size could do that in the time and manner that we did.

“We are a political party who went all the way to the Supreme Court claiming our 10 million votes. They were only able to give us six million votes. So we are a force to contend with in Africa. What we’ve done has never been done before. When PDP came, they had the military. We had nothing.”

Obi noted that the opposition party was ready to repeat and surpass the feat recorded during the 2023 elections in 2027 by producing a majority in the National Assembly and winning the presidential seat in 2027.

Earlier, the chairman of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, assured party members of the committee’s determination to rescue the party from the current challenges and restore and rebuild it as a veritable alternative platform for Nigerians.

She assured of the committee’s readiness to lead the party on the path of reconciliation within the short time of its assignment.

Usman stated: “We are on a rescue mission, not just for the Labour Party, but I tell you for our dear nation, Nigeria. The interest this committee has generated extends beyond party lines.

“The number of telephone calls I have received not just from Labour Party members, but people from other political parties who told me that if we get this thing right, we will walk together. So we have a huge task.

“Our party, by the grace of Almighty God, will become a platform for all disenfranchised and unhappy Nigerians. People who are not happy with the way things are going, we are going to be the platform for them by the grace of God. Therefore, we must view this as a significant national assignment.”

  • EFCC Operatives Allegedly Storm Kogi Governor’s Lodge In Search Of Yahaya Bello

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, allegedly stormed the State Kogi Government Lodge in Asokoro, on Wednesday night, September 18,  to forcefully arrest the immediate past Governor Yahaya Bello.

A statement issued by Bello’s Director of Media, Ohiare Michael, alleged that EFCC operatives were shooting sporadically.

“It has come to our notice that people suspected to be operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are currently around the Kogi Government Lodge, Asokoro, in an attempt to forcefully arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello. They were shooting sporadically.

We want to place it on record that the EFCC should be held accountable if anything untoward happens to him.

Tonight’s attack was needless, as the former governor made himself available to the EFCC in their office for interrogation. The EFCC had no questions to ask Alh. Yahaya Bello in the morning, but suddenly, they are out to arrest him.

This action is condemnable. They have displayed the very reason many Nigerians believe they were fighting political battles instead of the mandate to fight corruption. This action reflects much more than the fight against corruption. We will keep Nigerians posted.”

  • 21-Year-Old Man Bags Life Sentence Over R@pe And Murder Of Six Zimbabwean S3x Workers In South Africa

A 21-year-old man, Sifiso Mkhwanazi has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge, over the heinous killing of six Zimbabwean s3x workers in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mkhwanazi was sentenced on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, after he was convicted of six counts of murder, six counts of r@pe, six counts of defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Judge Cassim Moosa declared Mkhwanazi a dangerous criminal who was arrogant and threatened the well-being of other people in society.

The plethora of charges against Mkhwanazi emanates from the discovery of six female bodies at the premises of his father’s panel beating business in Rosettenville, Joburg, in October 2022.

During the course of the trial, Mkhwanazi admitted to his father, Mark Khumalo, that he had k!lled the six women, but denied the murders were planned or premeditated.

The case’s leading investigating officer, Bongani Mbonambi, told the court that all victims had been bound, gagged, and strangled to death, pointing to an elaborate plan proving his theory that all the murders were premeditated.

Mbonambi said based on the evidence and the circumstances surrounding the six deaths, Mkhwanazi was executing revenge against the women because of an earlier case of r@pe levelled against him.

However, Mkhwanazi’s defence counsel, Vuyo Maqetuka, argued that he killed the s3x workers after they raised the prices they had initially agreed upon, and out of fear that he would be arrested.

However, Judge Moosa differed, saying: “Six times, why didn’t he stay away from the s3x workers?”

“The accused was triggered in all six times that he might be arrested for r@pe again. When they wanted more money, that’s when he was angered,” Maqetuka said at the time.

In delivering judgment, Judge Moosa emphasised that, despite the accused’s age at the time of the murders, he remained a dangerous criminal.

“I have carefully considered the relative age of the accused when he committed his crimes and the argument that he should be regarded as relatively youthful when considering a suitable sentence to be imposed upon him,
    ” Mossa said.

“Having done so and accepting that he was 19 years old at the time of the commission of the crimes, I am compelled to conclude that the supposed relative youthfulness simply pales into the background having due regard into the horrendous nature of his actions,”

The judge stated that the crimes Mkhwanazi was convicted of, along with the condition of the victims’ bodies, clearly demonstrated a high level of violence against them.

“There was an extremely great degree of premeditation involved on the part of the accused over a period of time in the commission of the crimes”.

Moosa expressed the view that Mkhwanazi showed no remorse for his actions.

“The accused acknowledged that he committed the crimes. However, despite this, he does not seem to have insight into his criminality or the impact the crimes had on the victims.

“The accused has proved that he has a very poor prognosis for rehabilitation and will most likely remain a threat to society as long as he is alive. Government has identified violence against women as a national scourge.”

Mkhwanazi was sentenced to life imprisonment, along with an additional 10 years for obstructing the course of justice and 15 years for rape.

“The accused is sentenced to undergo imprisonment for an indeterminate period and it is directed that the accused shall be brought before this court upon exploration of 30 years to enable this court to reconsider his sentence,”
    the judge ruled.

Kwara LG Polls: NSCDC Deploys 3,000 Personnel

Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), in Kwara State, Dr. Umar Mohammed, has deployed over 3,000 personnel for the Saturday council polls across the 16 local government areas of the state.

Dr. Umar disclosed that the personnel were drawn from the State Command, Area Commands, and Divisional Offices in all the16 council areas.

The commandant, in a statement by the spokesman of the command, Ayoola Michael Shola in Ilorin on Thursday, said the deployed officers will man various polling units and synchronize efforts with sister security agencies to ensure the peaceful conduct of the election on September 21, 2024.

“Our primary responsibility is to create an environment where the local government election can be conducted peacefully, free from violence, intimidation, ballot snatching, and any other disruptive actions,” he stated.

Umar warned that the NSCDC would not tolerate any form of political thuggery, violence, or hooliganism. Any action aimed at disrupting the electoral process will be met with immediate and decisive action.

He said, “the personnel have been thoroughly briefed and will collaborate with other sister security agencies at the polling units. Special forces, such as Operation Harmony, the Counter-Terrorism Unit, and the Female Squad, will be patrolling the state to enhance security.

“In addition, officers from the Anti-Vandal Unit and the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department will be deployed to monitor and protect government assets, ensuring they are not targeted by vandals during the election.”

  • Minimum Wage: There Will Be Jail Time For Employers Who Don’t Pay

The Federal Government has warned that employers who refuse to pay the new minimum wage of N70,000 will face jail term.

FG said the new minimum wage must be followed to address the current economic reality, emphasising that no Nigerian worker, whether in government or private employment, should be paid less than the minimum wage.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kachollom Daju, stated this on Wednesday while speaking at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, held in Ikeja, Lagos.

Daju, who was represented by the Director of Employment and Wages of the ministry, John Nyamali, said, “The minimum wage is now a law, and as a result, it is a punishable crime for any employer to pay less than N70,000 to any of its workers.

“The private employment agencies should make it compulsory in any contract they take from their principal that their workers should not earn less than the minimum wage. The least paid worker in Nigeria should earn N70,000, and I think that should be after all deductions.

“The minimum wage is a law, and you can be jailed if you fail to implement it. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the least paid worker goes home with N70,000.”

In his remarks, the President of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, Dr. Olufemi Ogunlowo, asked the government and Nigeria Labour Congress to clarify whether the N70,000 minimum wage is net or gross, stating that all ambiguities in the Act should be highlighted and explained.

According to Okoye, the EAPEAN is already committed to the minimum wage, as well as providing decent jobs for Nigerians and guarding against the exploitation of human resources.

“As a labour union in the private sector, we are committed to the implementation of the minimum wage. We are a law-abiding and guided association. Our principals and clients have also keyed into the minimum wage.

“However, the government must clarify whether the N70,000 minimum wage is net or gross. The government and NLC should address all ambiguities in the minimum wage,” he stated.

Speaking at the programme, the Chairperson of the NLC, Lagos State chapter, Funmilayo Sessi, said the prevailing hardship had made a mess of whatever income any worker was earning in Nigeria, calling on private employers to ensure the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage.

She said: “The N70,000 isn’t enough in the current economic realities. By the time the consequential adjustment is concluded, all private employment agencies should immediately start paying their workers the N70,000 minimum wage.

“The NLC in Lagos State will see to the strict enforcement of the minimum wage. EAPEAN should avoid confrontation with the NLC on the minimum wage.”

  • Controversy Trails Yahaya Bello’s Visit To EFCC Headquarters

The reported visit of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission headquarters has sparked controversy.

While the ex-governor’s media team claimed that their principal honoured the invitation, the anti-graft agency countered these claims, insisting that Bello remains a wanted person.

A statement on Thursday morning by the Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, asserted that the former Kogi governor arrived at the EFCC headquarters to honour the agency’s invitation.

According to Michael, Bello’s decision followed consultations with his legal team and political associates.

He said, “Former Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, today honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. This decision was made after due consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.

“The former governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had all the while only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights to ensure due process.”

He explained that Bello intended to use the opportunity to clear his name of the allegations against him.

Michael added, “The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. It is important for the former governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name, as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.

“The former governor firmly believes in the efforts of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development and supports the fight against corruption in the country.

“It is on record that he was the first governor of Kogi State to implement an anti-corruption mechanism to curb graft and ensure that the state’s resources benefit its people.

“He was accompanied to the EFCC headquarters by high-profile Nigerians. We hope that the commission will act professionally and respect his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Details of his engagement with the operatives of the anti-graft agency will be disclosed later.”

In a twist, the EFCC countered Michael’s claims, insisting that the former governor was not in its custody and remains a wanted person.

EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated, “Media reports today that a former governor of Kogi State, Mr Yahaya Bello, is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are incorrect. The commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.

“Bello, who has already been declared wanted by the commission for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”

Minutes after the anti-graft agency’s rebuttal, the Bello Media Office maintained that Bello was at the EFCC headquarters and that the commission refused to interrogate the ex-governor.

“Earlier today, we reported the voluntary visit of former Governor of Kogi State, HE Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission office to honour the commission’s invitation.

“In the statement, we reiterated the former governor’s great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, and stressed that all the while, he only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process.

“The EFCC did not, however, interrogate him, as officials told him he could leave. We don’t know what this means yet. As we write, HE Alhaji Yahaya Bello has left the EFCC office.

“He was accompanied there by the Governor of Kogi State, HE Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.

“Recall that the case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. The former governor decided to honour the invitation to clear his name, as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear,”

    Michael said in another statement.

The EFCC has preferred 19 charges against the former Kogi governor, alongside his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu, for money laundering offences totalling N80,246,470,088.88.

After failed attempts to arrest and arraign him, the EFCC declared the former Kogi governor wanted.

The media office of the former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has given an update on his visit to the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, office on Wednesday.

A statement signed by Bello’s Director of Media, Ohiare Michael, said the former Governor, accompanied by the state governor, Ahmed Ododo, left the commission’s office after he was told to leave by the officers who did not interrogate him as expected.

The statement said it was not clear why Bello was not interrogated but asked to leave.

Ohiare said, “The EFCC did not, however, interrogate him as officials told him he could leave. We don’t know what this means yet. As we write, HE Alhaji Yahaya Bello has left the EFCC office. He was accompanied there by the Governor of Kogi State, HE Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.

”Recall that the case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. The former Governor decided to honour the invitation to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”

However, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has denied reports that Yahaya Bello was in its custody.

EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, maintained that Bello remained wanted with a subsisting warrant of arrest.

  • Angry Parents In Ekiti Demand Probe Of Education Ministry Over Mass Failure In Common Entrance

Angry Parents In Ekiti Demand Probe Of Education Ministry Over Mass Failure In Common Entrance

Parents of pupils who wrote the last common entrance examination into secondary schools in Ekiti State have called on Governor Biodun Oyebanji to probe the state Ministry of Education for allegedly bungling the conduct of the exercise.

The angry parents specifically called on Oyebanji to set up a Panel of Inquiry to investigate what they called “the questionable mass failure in the examination” and also demanded an audit and re-marking of the pupils’ answer scripts.

The mass failure in the exam written on July 1 and July 3 and the long delay in releasing the results is already causing tension in public and private primary schools, with parents lamenting the alleged shoddy handling of the exercise.

The issue formed the major topic of discussion in public and private schools in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, and nearby towns visited by our correspondent on Wednesday where the parents are spoiling for a showdown with the ministry on the alleged exam fiasco.

Some of the irate parents threatened to stage a public protest to the Ministry of Education as soon as possible if no solution is found to the issue as the future of their wards is at stake.

The release of the results on Tuesday, September 17, the day public and private schools resumed, left the parents and their wards scandalized, wondering why the ministry failed to release the results before the resumption day.

Common entrance candidates who chose public schools were left stranded by the fact that they did not know what they scored before the official resumption date with many of them still at home with their fate hanging in the balance.

Our correspondent also gathered that the common entrance examination certificates were withdrawn following a spelling error on the ones to be given to those who had distinction grades following the misspelling of the word “DISTINCTION” on the certificates.

It was learnt that the error also led to the withholding of the certificates of other pupils who did not obtain the Distinction grade and the date of the release of the certificates is still unknown.

A concerned parent, Mr Sanya Ibuoye, slammed the state Ministry of Education for alleged tardiness and playing the lottery with the future of the innocent pupils, calling for a prompt investigation of the “unacceptable scandal” by the officials of the ministry.

Another parent, Mrs Iyanuoluwa Ayegbusi, called on Governor Oyebanji to constitute a panel to dig deep into the alleged shoddy handling of the common entrance exam and demanded an audit of all the answer scripts.

Mrs Ayegbusi also demanded the remarking of the scripts by independent and competent officials. She demanded that all officials found culpable must be punished in accordance with the extant rules and regulations.

She said the alleged incompetence of the officials of the ministry could have negative effects on the efforts of the Governor to sustain Ekiti’s prominence in education.

“At first, we were scandalized that the results which were supposed to have been released before now for the pupils to know their placements were released on the day of resumption putting those who chose public schools in a state of confusion.

“As if that was not enough, the mass failure of the exam is unacceptable. In my child’s school, they usually ask the pupils to tick the answers they chose on their question papers which will be examined during revision making each pupil know what he scored in the five subjects.

“My child cannot score zero in a subject, I reject the purported result released by the ministry. We the parents are calling on Governor Oyebanji to set up a Panel of Inquiry to look into the mishandling of this exam, we also demand the audit of the answer scripts and their remarking by independent and competent examiners because many parents here are complaining of this mass failure.”

Another parent who craved anonymity lambasted the Ekiti education ministry for serial gaffes and professional misconduct noting that the common entrance certificate of his daughter who is now in JSS 3 is yet to be released.

In her reaction, the Commissioner for Education, DrOlabimpe Aderiye promised to look into the complaints of the parents to address them as soon as possible and to give full feedback on the controversy.

Dr Aderiye advised parents whose wards did not meet the cut-off point to officially write to her ministry to provide spaces in available schools to such embattled pupils.

She said: “The issue is about the capacity of candidates’ school of choice and the respective cut-off marks.

“Placement of pupils from public schools is given preference because of their limited opportunities. There are, however, spaces in some schools like the newly established Model College, Ado Road, Ikere.

“Parents whose children passed but did not meet the cut-off of their school of choice should write to the Ministry of Education. They shall be given a list of schools that have available spaces. I will investigate further and feed you back.”
