NDLEA Arrests Canadian at Lagos Airport, Intercepts ₦9bn Worth of Opioids.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have detained a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos.

The arrest took place on Thursday, October 3, when she attempted to import a significant quantity of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a potent strain of synthetic cannabis.

In a statement released on Sunday, NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi detailed that Munju was apprehended during the passenger clearance process for KLM airline flight arrivals from Canada at the airport’s Terminal 1.

During a thorough examination of her three bags, which were searched as part of the standard procedure, authorities discovered 74 parcels of the illicit substance weighing 35.20 kilograms, concealed within two of her bags.

Adrienne Munju, who was visiting Nigeria for the first time, revealed in her statement that she had been recruited to traffic the drugs through an online platform for 10,000 Canadian dollars, which she needed to fund her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.

In a separate operation, NDLEA officials at the Port Harcourt Ports in Onne, Rivers State, intercepted a staggering 13,298,000 opioid pills, including Tramadol, Tramaking Quick Action Tramadol, Tamol-X, Royal Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol.

Additionally, they seized 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The total street value of the drugs exceeded ₦9,017,771,000. These opioids were discovered in three containers arriving from India, targeted during a comprehensive examination conducted jointly with Nigerian Customs and other port stakeholders on October 2 and 3, 2024.
