The Federal Government has suspended import duties and taxes on basic food items in a bid to cushion the increasing inflation in Nigeria. The decision, assisted by the Nigeria Customs Service, is aimed at easing financial burdens on Nigerians as the country goes through economic challenges.

This was disclosed by the Comptroller General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, on Tuesday, based on the government’s resolve to fight the issue of inflation seamlessly.

He said the NCS is currently implementing some reforms to facilitate the export of products so as to increase the quantum of Nigerian goods in the foreign market, through the introduction of advanced ruling systems, authorized economic operators, and a time-release study, all targeted at making sure that there is trade facilitation, energizing the economy, and creating opportunities for many farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

“We are committed to implementing this measure seamlessly to address the problem of hunger in our nation,” Adeniyi stated.

Beyond economic measures, the NCS is intensifying efforts to curb the proliferation of arms and dangerous weapons through Nigeria’s land, sea, and airports. Adeniyi warned that disruptions in the supply chain could affect foreign investment, distort trade, promote instability, increase scarcity, and hinder revenue collections.

“In these challenging times, let us unite in resilience and cooperation. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who have embraced the path of peace and dialogue,” Adeniyi said, calling for constructive engagement and cooperation from all Nigerians to overcome current challenges and build a brighter future.
