ECOWAS Keeps Door Open for Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Tinubu Tells German President
Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier that ECOWAS remains committed to the welfare of citizens in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, emphasizing that wisdom and diplomacy will be key in reintegrating these countries into the regional body.
During a state visit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS, noted that the leadership of the three countries has been hesitant to establish clear transition timelines. He stressed that ECOWAS will not tolerate unconstitutional governments and will continue to lead by example, ensuring that innocent citizens are not punished.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of maintaining free movement and trade, despite uncertainties in the transition programs. He reiterated that ECOWAS will keep the door open for the return of democracy in these nations, focusing on the wellbeing of their citizens.
In response, President Steinmeier acknowledged the significant impact that reintegrating Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso would have on the economy and security of the West Coast. He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the need for diplomatic efforts to bring these countries back into the fold, while also preparing for future economic cooperation.
Ejes Gist News recalls that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger withdrew from ECOWAS following allegations that the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, planned to invade Niger in the aftermath of the coup d’état.
Subsequently, restrictions were placed on Niger, prompting Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to pull out of the regional body. Despite pleas from ECOWAS, the three military-governed countries have refused to return to the organization.
