Breaking: Shaibu Reinstated as Edo Deputy Governor, Assembly Takes Immediate Action
The Edo State House of Assembly has gone ahead to appeal the judgment by Justice J. K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, nullifying the impeachment of the state’s former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
On a complementary ground, the Assembly also filed a stay of execution on the judgment pending the appeal.
The Justice Omotosho-led court, earlier today, annulled the impeachment of Shaibu, declaring as illegal the process through which he was removed from office by the House of Assembly of the state.
The follow-up to the judgment is that the court ordered his reinstatement and quashed the appointment of the new deputy governor, who succeeded him.
The Edo state House of Assembly impeached Philip Shaibu in April, ending a long-drawn drama between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The impeachment of Shaibu came after the adoption of a seven-man committee set up by the chief judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to look into the allegations of misconduct heaped on him by his executive governor on the same day.
Eighteen members out of the 19 present at plenary voted for the impeachment of Shaibu, as one abstained from the head count and voting process.
