Ahmad Joda, an elder statesman who led President Muhammadu Buhari’s transition committee in 2015, has died.

Ahmed Joda OFR, CON, CFR was a Nigerian administrator who climbed through the Northern Regional ’s administrative ranks and then into the federal civil service, eventually retiring as Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industries. During the presidency of the young Yakubu Gowon, he was regarded as one of a group of outstanding Permanent Secretaries.

Mr Joda, a journalist who later became a civil servant and served as one of Yakubu Gowon’s military ’s “super federal permanent secretaries,

He died on Friday afternoon at the age of 91.

Mr Joda died at the Federal Medical Centre in Yola, Adamawa State’s capital, according to family sources.

He attended Yola Elementary School and Yola Middle School in Adamawa State before attending Barewa College in Zaria from 1945 to 1948.

He worked briefly at Moor Plantation in Ibadan and then as an agricultural officer in Yola before joining Gaskiya Corporation in Zaria to pursue a career in journalism.

From 1954 to 1956, he attended Pitmans College in London. From 1956 to 1960, he worked as a correspondent for the Nigerian Broadcasting Service.

From 1962 to 1967, he worked for the Northern Regional as a Chief Information Officer and later as Permanent Secretary.

He was seconded to the Federal Civil Service as a Permanent Secretary in the federal ministries of Information, Education, and Industries in 1967, following the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War, where he retired in 1978.

During the Second Nigerian Republic, he retired to the private sector and served as chairman and board member of several companies, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Nigerian Communications Commission, Pastoral Resolve, SCOA, Nigeria, Chagoury Group, Flour Mills of Nigeria, and Nigerian LNG.

He was also a member of the 1988 Constituent Assembly, which planned the Third Nigerian Republic’s constitutional transition.

In 1999, he was named head of the Presidential Committee on Poverty Alleviation, and in 2015, he oversaw Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential transition.
