The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has ordered Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately move onto the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho, in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

Charles Aniagwu, the state’s Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, announced the directive in a statement issued in Asaba on Thursday.

Aniagwu explained that the governor reached the decision because motorists, residents, businesses and other road users have been enduring hardship since the section of the federal highway caved in.

While the East-West Road is owned by the Federal Government, he said Oborevwori was concerned that the abrupt collapse of the Agbarho stretch, blamed on a strong erosive force unleashed by heavy rains, had turned into a major inconvenience for Deltans and other Nigerians who use the busy corridor.

The governor therefore asked Julius Berger, a leading construction company handling major infrastructure projects in the state, to begin remedial works on the failed portion, the commissioner said.

He said the intervention was consistent with the administration’s determination to keep critical infrastructure in the state functional, whether it sits under state or Federal Government jurisdiction.

The commissioner added that the governor’s action underscored the administration’s philosophy that the immediate needs of the people, rather than bureaucratic boundaries, should drive governance.

Aniagwu described the East-West Road as a key economic artery that connects communities and carries people, agricultural produce, goods and services across the Niger Delta and beyond.

He noted that any serious disruption along the corridor could have far-reaching consequences for commuters, transport operators, traders and businesses whose activities rely on the road.

Road users were assured that the intervention would help ease the present difficulties and restore smoother traffic flow along the affected section.

The commissioner said the Oborevwori administration would continue to work with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to resolve infrastructure challenges capable of undermining economic activities and the wellbeing of residents.

He added that the governor’s step also matched the administration’s broader infrastructure drive under the MORE Agenda, with its emphasis on meaningful development and a better quality of life for Deltans.

Aniagwu urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution around the affected area while the remedial works are carried out.
