Security operatives have reportedly arrested Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji. He is the medical expert who conducted an independent health assessment of Nnamdi Kanu. The arrest has raised concerns among legal and medical professionals.

Summary:

  • Prof. Martin Aghaji was reportedly arrested at his Enugu residence on 3 July 2026.
  • He had issued a medical report on Nnamdi Kanu that contradicted the DSS version.

A legal practitioner, Chief Barrister Maxwell Opara, disclosed the arrest on Saturday. He said Prof. Aghaji was taken from his residence. The house is located in Independence Layout, Enugu State. The arrest reportedly occurred on Friday, 3 July 2026.

Mr Opara issued a statement on the matter. He said information reached him about the incident.

Background on Kanu’s Health

The reported arrest comes amid sustained legal proceedings involving Mr Kanu. His detention and health condition have remained subjects of public attention. They have also been matters of legal contest.

In October 2025, SaharaReporters published a detailed medical report on Mr Kanu’s health. The report was prepared by the Nigerian Medical Association.

It was titled: “Nigerian Medical Association Independent Investigative (Multidisciplinary) Medical Report on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.” The document was dated 23 September 2025.

The report was compiled by a multidisciplinary team of eight medical professionals. It revealed alarming details about the IPOB leader’s deteriorating health.

According to the document, Mr Kanu, who is 58 years old, has been battling multiple complications. These include severe fatigue, blurred vision, and chest pain. He also suffers from urinary difficulty, recurrent nosebleeds, and numbness in the limbs. Episodes of spontaneous hematuria, or blood in urine, were also noted.

The report stated that Mr Kanu had been living with hypertension for over ten years. He was on a complex combination of drugs.

“He developed generalised fatigue and muscle weakness, worse on waking up from sleep and does not get worse with activity,” the NMA report stated.

Medical experts who reviewed the findings warned that the symptoms could become life-threatening without urgent intervention.

Prof. Aghaji’s independent medical report reportedly contradicted the official position of the DSS. The secret police had presented its own assessment of Mr Kanu’s health.

The professor’s findings were said to have differed significantly. This allegedly triggered the events that led to his reported arrest.

This is a developing story. Ejes Gist News will provide updates as more information becomes available.
