  • BREAKING: Police Dismiss Popular PRO ACP Benjamin Hundeyin Six Months After Resumption

BREAKING: Police Dismiss Popular PRO ACP Benjamin Hundeyin Six Months After Resumption

Spokesman’s Sudden Exit Shocks Colleagues as Force Undergoes Major Internal Restructuring

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed its Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, barely six months after his resumption into office, in a move that has sent shockwaves through the police hierarchy and the media community.

Ejes Gist News gathered that Hundeyin’s dismissal comes amid an ongoing internal restructuring within the police force, though specifics surrounding his removal remain unclear as of press time.

    Short Tenure, Significant Impact

ACP Benjamin Hundeyin assumed office as the Force Public Relations Officer approximately six months ago, bringing with him a reputation for accessibility, transparency, and proactive engagement with the media and the public.

During his brief tenure, he became one of the most recognizable faces of the Nigeria Police Force, frequently appearing in press briefings and responding to public inquiries on social media platforms.

His dismissal has therefore come as a surprise to many who viewed him as a reform-minded officer committed to improving police-public relations.

    Official Statement Expected

As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding Hundeyin’s dismissal.

Sources within the force, however, confirm that his removal is part of a broader internal restructuring exercise currently underway within the police hierarchy. Such exercises typically involve the redeployment, dismissal, or replacement of key personnel to achieve administrative objectives.

    Reactions Trail Dismissal

News of Hundeyin’s dismissal has elicited mixed reactions from colleagues, journalists, and members of the public.

    From the Media Community

Journalists who worked closely with Hundeyin expressed shock at the development, describing him as one of the most accessible and responsive police PROs in recent memory.

“He was always available, always ready to clarify issues. This is a huge loss for police-media relations,” one journalist told Ejes Gist News.

    From the Public

On social media, Nigerians have expressed surprise and concern, with many wondering what led to the sudden exit of an officer widely perceived as competent.

Some have called for transparency in the dismissal, urging the police authorities to provide clarity on the reasons behind the decision.

    Internal Restructuring: What We Know

The Nigeria Police Force has in recent months embarked on a series of internal changes aimed at repositioning the force for optimal performance.

    Such restructuring exercises often involve:

    • Postings and redeployments

    • Promotions and advancements

    • Disciplinary actions

    • Retirement of senior officers

Hundeyin’s dismissal appears to fall within the context of this ongoing exercise, though the exact reasons remain speculative.

    Implications for Police-Public Relations

Hundeyin’s dismissal raises questions about the future of police-public communications in Nigeria.

As the official spokesperson, he served as the bridge between the Nigeria Police Force and the citizens it serves. His removal at a time when the force is working to rebuild public trust could have significant implications.

Observers note that the police authorities must move quickly to appoint a replacement and ensure continuity in communication strategies.

BREAKING: Jihadists Set St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral Ablaze in Taraba, Priest Rescues Blessed Sacrament

Flames Rage Through Wukari Church as Bystanders Watch Helplessly – No Casualties Reported

Suspected Islamist jihadists have set St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State, ablaze in a late-night attack that has sent shockwaves through the Christian community in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

Ejes Gist News gathered that the attackers struck under the cover of darkness, with flames rapidly consuming the roof and windows of the cathedral as helpless bystanders watched the house of God burn.

    Priest’s Brave Act

In a moment of extraordinary courage, the cathedral’s priest, Fr James Oliver, risked his life to rescue the Blessed Sacrament from the burning building.

Witnesses reported that despite the intensity of the fire and the danger of structural collapse, Fr Oliver dashed into the sanctuary to retrieve the consecrated Eucharist before the flames could consume it—a act of faith that has moved parishioners and drawn widespread admiration.

    Eyewitness Account

Residents of Wukari who witnessed the attack described scenes of horror and helplessness.

“We heard shouting and saw flames. By the time we gathered, the roof was already on fire. We could not do anything—the attackers had fled, and the fire was too strong,” one witness told reporters.

Another source confirmed the jihadist nature of the attack, stating that the assailants were heard making religious declarations before setting the church ablaze.

    Wukari’s Volatile Security Situation

Wukari, located in southern Taraba State, has been a flashpoint for religious and ethnic tensions for years. The area has witnessed repeated attacks on Christian communities by extremist groups and armed herdsmen militia.

St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral stands as one of the oldest and most prominent Catholic churches in the region, serving a large congregation of predominantly Christian farmers.

    Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)

The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling on security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.

    Parishioners in Mourning

Heartbroken parishioners gathered at the scene this morning, many in tears as they surveyed the damage to their beloved place of worship.

“This is where we were baptized. This is where we got married. This is where we buried our parents. And now they have burned it down,” one elderly woman sobbed.

    Security Response

As of the time of this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement regarding the attack. However, sources indicate that military and police units have been deployed to Wukari to prevent further violence and begin investigations.

The attackers are believed to have fled the scene before security forces arrived.

    Pattern of Attacks

The burning of St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral follows a disturbing pattern of attacks on Christian places of worship across Northern Nigeria.

    Recent Attacks Location Target
St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral Wukari, Taraba Church set ablaze
[Previous attacks context] Multiple states Churches, Christians

Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised alarm over the targeting of religious minorities in Nigeria’s conflict zones.

    Condemnations

The attack has drawn condemnation from various quarters:

    • Civil society groups have called for urgent federal intervention

    • Religious leaders across denominations have expressed solidarity with Wukari Catholics

    • International observers have urged the Nigerian government to protect religious freedom

  • Tinubu’s NSA under fire as Bandits Slaughter NYSC Member Abba after collecting N10 Million Ransom

Tinubu’s NSA under fire as Bandits Slaughter NYSC Member Abba after collecting N10 Million Ransom

Tragedy After Torture: Corps Member Murdered Despite Family Meeting Ransom Demand

In a harrowing conclusion to a six-week ordeal, bandits have killed an abducted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Musa Usman Abba, despite his family paying a ransom of N10 million for his release.

The development, confirmed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, has sent shockwaves across the nation and ignited a firestorm of anger directed at the highest levels of Nigeria’s security establishment .

Sources within the family disclosed that communication with the abductors ceased abruptly after the ransom was delivered. The kidnappers, who had earlier demanded additional items including motorcycles following the payment, went completely silent, deepening fears about the young corps member’s fate .

The Ordeal: From Abduction to Torture

Abba, a graduate of Federal University Gusau where he studied Plant Science and Biotechnology, was kidnapped on January 9, 2026, while traveling from Gusau in Zamfara State to Sokoto State.

Tinubu's NSA under fire as Bandits Slaughter NYSC Member Abba after collecting N10 Million Ransom

The kidnappers initially demanded N50 million before reducing the figure to N10 million. As relatives struggled to gather funds, the situation took a darker turn. A deeply disturbing video later emerged showing the young corps member in visible distress, pleading desperately for help as he endured brutal abuse in captivity .

“Please help me, for God’s sake, please help my life. I may soon die in this situation,” he cried in the footage, gasping between blows .

He made repeated emotional religious appeals, begging, “For the sake of Allah, please help me. For the sake of Prophet Muhammad, please help me.” His pleas went unanswered .

News of his abduction spread rapidly across social media, triggering widespread concern. What started as a private family appeal turned into a public fundraising effort, with over N8.5 million reportedly raised from concerned Nigerians . However, in a troubling twist, the kidnappers allegedly increased their demand after noticing the public support .

    The Final Blow

Despite the family raising and paying the N10 million ransom, all communication with the abductors stopped.

Given the situation, the family has concluded arrangements to observe his funeral prayer in absentia in accordance with Islamic rites. The Janaza prayer (Gha’ib) is scheduled to hold on Friday, March 6 .

“Since receiving the N10 million ransom payment, Abba’s abductors have completely cut off all communication with the family,” family sources said .

The family expressed profound gratitude to those who supported them during the ordeal, stating, “If he has passed on, may Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus” .

The Brothers’ Controversy: Ribadu Under Fire

Abba’s death comes just days after National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu made controversial remarks that have now come back to haunt him with tragic resonance.

Speaking at a High-Level African Counter-Terrorism Meeting, Ribadu stated, “Whether we like it or not, there are terrorists in Nigeria who want peace. They are our brothers. We must seek for dialogue and understanding”

The timing could not be more devastating. Days after Ribadu asked Nigerians to see terrorists as “brothers,” a young Nigerian serving his fatherland has been killed by those very “brothers” after collecting N10 million from his struggling family .

Social media has erupted with a single demand: “NSA Nuhu Ribadu, see the handiwork of your brothers.”

Northern political commentator Abu Amir captured the public sentiment, reacting to Ribadu’s statement by saying, “In a nutshell, what the NSA implied in that video is, bandits are his brothers, so he can’t kill them. I think now this tells us everything about the escalation of banditry in the north. God have mercy” .

Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, offered a scathing critique: “This kind of reasoning from Tinubu’s NSA is exactly why they’re paying huge ransoms to terrorists and bandits and signalling to Northern villages under siege to give in to bandits’ demands” .

Critics argue that when the state’s chief security officer uses the language of kinship to describe those who butcher, bomb, and terrorize, it strips the state of its most vital asset: deterrence .

    The Geography of Grief

As columnist Oto’ Drama wrote in a scathing op-ed, “The hallowed streets of Kano, Kaduna, and Sokoto recently witnessed thousands waving Iranian flags following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Yet, only days prior, the village of Tungan Dutse in Zamfara was transformed into a literal slaughterhouse where over 50 Nigerians were butchered in their sleep. For them, there were no banners. For them, there were no protest marches” .

Now, add Abba to that list of those for whom there are no banners.

    A Call for Accountability

Legal analyst Evans Ufeli Esq. posed a question that now echoes with renewed urgency: “When a nation’s steward reaches for the language of kinship to describe those who have butchered, bombed, and terrorized, the words do not land lightly. To call perpetrators ‘brothers’ is to set memory against mercy” .

How to Print NYSC Green Card and Check Your NYSC Call-Up Letter

For the family of Musa Usman Abba, mercy died in a forest when their N10 million ran out and their son’s captors—Ribadu’s “brothers”—cut off communication and, presumably, his life.

BREAKING: Court Discharges, Acquits Suspended Super Cop DCP Abba Kyari of All Charges in NDLEA Asset Case

Judge Rules Prosecution Failed to Prove Ownership of Property Linked to Embattled Police Officer

A federal high court in Abuja has discharged and acquitted Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, of a 23-count charge of alleged non-declaration of assets filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In a judgment delivered on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution failed to establish its case against Kyari and the other defendants.

Ejes Gist News reports that Kyari was charged alongside his two brothers, who were accused of swearing false affidavits to conceal the origin of some property allegedly linked to the police officer.

    The Judgment

Delivering the verdict, Justice Omotosho said the NDLEA did not present sufficient evidence to prove that the property cited in the charge belonged to Kyari.

The judge explained that ownership of landed property can be proven through:

    • Traditional history

    • Title documents

    • Acts of possession

    • Possession connected to ownership

He said none of these forms of proof was presented by the prosecution to show that the property located in Fountain Estate, Kasana—said to belong to Ramatu Kyari—was owned by the suspended police officer.

Justice Omotosho also held that the prosecution failed to produce evidence linking Kyari to other property referenced in the charge, including those located on:

    • Linda Choko Road in Asokoro, Abuja

    • Maiduguri, Borno State

    Kyari’s Defence

In his defence, Kyari had told the court that the property in Borno belonged to his late father and was inherited by him and his siblings.

The judge said the prosecution did not disprove this claim.

Justice Omotosho also faulted the charge of conspiracy against Kyari’s brothers—Mohammed Kyari and Ali Kyari—holding that the allegation was not substantiated by evidence.

He described the prosecution’s case as “weak and lacking in credible proof.”

    Judge’s Remarks

The judge added that Kyari had served the country and should not be subjected to persecution in the absence of convincing evidence.

The remarks are significant, acknowledging Kyari’s years of service in the Nigeria Police Force, where he gained prominence as the head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and earned a reputation for high-profile crime busting.

    The Charges

The NDLEA had filed a 23-count charge against Kyari and his brothers, alleging:

    Charge Allegation
Non-declaration of assets Failure to declare property allegedly owned by Kyari
Conspiracy Brothers accused of swearing false affidavits
Concealment Attempts to hide origin of property

All charges have now been dismissed by the court.

    Separate Trial Continues

Meanwhile, Kyari and four other suspended police officers are also facing a separate trial before Justice Emeka Nwite over alleged involvement in a cocaine deal.

    In that case:

    • Two drug traffickers arrested in connection with the matter, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, were convicted and sentenced to two years in prison in 2022.

    • Kyari and the other officers are still facing trial.

That case is ongoing and separate from today’s ruling.

    Reactions

The judgment has elicited mixed reactions from the public and legal community.

Supporters of Kyari have hailed the ruling as a vindication, arguing that he has been unfairly targeted.

Critics, however, note that today’s acquittal relates specifically to the asset declaration charges and does not affect the ongoing cocaine-related trial.

Legal analysts point out that the judgment underscores the importance of evidence in criminal prosecutions.

“The court has simply said the prosecution did not bring enough evidence to prove its case,” one lawyer noted. “That is not the same as saying Kyari is innocent of everything—it means on these specific charges, the evidence was insufficient.”

    Element Implication
Asset Declaration Charges Dismissed. Kyari and brothers acquitted.

  • BREAKING: Lawmaker Beats Wife Beyond Recognition for Alleged Infidelity

BREAKING: Lawmaker Beats Wife Beyond Recognition for Alleged Infidelity

Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor Accused of Brutal Assault After Social Gathering Disagreement

A member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor, has been accused of physically assaulting his wife beyond recognition following allegations of infidelity, in a case that has sparked outrage and renewed conversations about domestic violence involving public officials.

Ejes Gist News gathered that the lawmaker, who represents Obubra I Constituency, allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with his wife last Saturday after a disagreement that reportedly began at a public function held at the Assembly quarters.

    How the Incident Unfolded

Sources familiar with the matter claimed that the confrontation started during a social gathering where the couple was present. According to accounts, the lawmaker allegedly accused his wife of drinking excessively and maintaining inappropriate relationships with other men.

The disagreement reportedly intensified after the couple returned home from the event. What initially began as a verbal exchange escalated into a physical fight.

“When they returned home, they began to argue, which escalated into a physical fight, resulting in him beating her,” one source alleged.

The severity of the assault has been described by those close to the family as leaving the victim “beaten beyond recognition,” though medical reports have not been made public.

    Wife Downplays Incident

When contacted for comment, the lawmaker’s wife appeared reluctant to discuss the matter in detail. She downplayed the incident, saying:

“Nothing happened. Just stay off. We will sort it out.”

Her response has, however, done little to quell public speculation surrounding the claims. Advocacy groups note that victims of domestic violence often minimize or deny abuse due to fear, pressure, or complex family dynamics.

    Activist Breaks the Story

The allegations were first brought to public attention by activist and journalist Agba Jalingo in a Facebook post, where he alleged that the incident occurred and called for accountability.

Jalingo’s post has since gone viral, sparking heated debates on social media and within political circles in Cross River State. Many are questioning how a public officer entrusted with making laws could be accused of such brutality.

    Lawmaker Yet to Respond

As of press time, repeated efforts to reach Hon. Agbor for his response were ongoing. He has yet to publicly address the allegations.

The Assembly leadership has also remained silent, with no official statement issued regarding the matter. Observers say the coming days may determine whether the issue remains a private family dispute or escalates into a broader legal and political controversy.

    Domestic Violence and Public Office

The allegations have stirred conversations on social media and within political circles, particularly given the increasing public concern over domestic violence and the responsibility of public office holders to uphold ethical standards both in their official and private lives.

    Issue Concern
Public Trust Lawmakers are expected to model good behavior
Legal Consequences If substantiated, assault charges could be filed
Political Fallout Assembly leadership may face pressure to act
Social Impact Case highlights prevalence of domestic violence

    Legal Perspective

Legal experts note that allegations of domestic violence are serious and, if substantiated, could carry both criminal and reputational consequences.

Under Nigerian law, domestic assault is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment or fines. The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) also provides protections for victims, though enforcement remains inconsistent across states.

Advocacy groups have consistently emphasized the importance of reporting and investigating such cases thoroughly, regardless of the social or political status of those involved.

    What Happens Next

    Question Status
Has Hon. Agbor responded? No. He has not publicly addressed the allegations.
Has the wife filed a complaint? Unknown. She has downplayed the incident.
Will the Assembly investigate? No official statement yet.
Has police intervened? Unconfirmed at this time.

    Public Reaction

Social media has been ablaze with reactions since Agba Jalingo’s post. Many Nigerians are calling for:

    • A thorough investigation

    • Accountability regardless of the lawmaker’s status

    • Support for the victim

    • Institutional response from the Assembly leadership

Some have drawn attention to the broader issue of domestic violence in Nigeria, noting that cases involving high-profile individuals often highlight the systemic failures in protecting victims.

    Call for Accountability

Advocacy groups are urging relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly, regardless of the victim’s reluctance to speak publicly.

“Domestic violence is a crime, not a family matter,” one activist stated. “When a public officer is involved, the need for accountability becomes even greater.”

BREAKING: Popular Serving Senator Seriake Dickson Dumps PDP, Joins Newly Registered NDC

Former Bayelsa Governor Set to Defect Ahead of 2027 Elections as Party Receives INEC Certificate

Barring any last-minute changes, former Bayelsa State Governor and serving senator, Seriake Dickson, has finalized plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) , signaling a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ejes Gist News gathered that Dickson’s move is expected to reshape political dynamics, particularly in the South-South region, and could trigger a wave of defections by other high-profile politicians seeking alternative platforms.

Also Read : Tinubu Moves to Revoke Tompolo’s $144 Million Pipeline Surveillance Contract as APC Chieftain Issues Urgent Caution

    Major Announcement is Coming

Dickson had earlier hinted at the significant political move in a statement posted on his social media platforms, building anticipation among his followers and political observers.

“Major Announcement is Coming!!! Tomorrow, Thursday, 5th March 2026, at 2:00 PM, I will be making an important statement at a Press Conference addressing the future of our people and our democracy. Stay tuned. Be ready. Be part of the moment,” he wrote.

The post carried strategic hashtags that left little doubt about his destination: #NDC, #NigeriaPolitics, and #2027Elections.

The press conference, scheduled for 2:00 PM today, is expected to formally announce his defection and outline his reasons for leaving the PDP, a party he has been associated with for decades.

NDC: A New Kid on the Block

Dickson’s defection comes just days after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) received its certificate of registration from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC presented the registration certificate to the party recently, marking the culmination of a prolonged legal battle that began in 2017 when the association first applied for registration.

The party’s Protem National Legal Adviser, Barrister Reuben Egwuaba, who received the certificate on behalf of the NDC, described the moment as a victory for democracy.

According to Egwuaba, the party was initially denied registration by INEC on the grounds that its logo bore a resemblance to that of the All Progressives Congress (APC)—a claim later dismissed by the court.

The court not only ruled that the NDC’s logo was distinct but also directed INEC to register the party, affirming its legal status. Egwuaba commended the judiciary for upholding justice and praised INEC’s current leadership for complying promptly with the court order.

“With the presentation of this certificate, NDC joins the registered political parties in the contention for the provision of democratic leadership and contest for power in ways that would make Nigerians at home and in the diaspora proud,” Egwuaba said.

He added that the party is positioning itself as an alternative platform for Nigerians dissatisfied with both the ruling party and existing opposition parties.

    Why Dickson’s Defection Matters

Political observers say Dickson’s move is significant for several reasons:

    Factor Implication
Profile Former governor and sitting senator—one of the highest-profile defectors to date
Timing Comes ahead of 2027 elections, giving NDC immediate national relevance
Region South-South is a PDP stronghold; his exit weakens PDP’s grip
Signal Could trigger a wave of defections by other politicians seeking new platforms

Dickson’s departure from the PDP is expected to deal a blow to the opposition party’s structure in Bayelsa State and the wider South-South region, where the PDP has traditionally dominated.

    What This Means for 2027

With the NDC now registered and attracting high-profile figures like Dickson, the 2027 political landscape is taking a new shape.

    The party is expected to:

    • Field candidates across various levels

    • Position itself as a “third force” alternative to APC and PDP

    • Attract other disgruntled politicians from established parties

Dickson’s defection lends immediate credibility and visibility to the new platform, potentially making it a magnet for others seeking to break away from the two dominant parties.

    Dickson’s Political Journey

Seriake Dickson served as Governor of Bayelsa State from 2012 to 2020. He has been a serving senator since 2020, representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District.

Throughout his political career, he has been a prominent figure in the PDP, known for his influence in Bayelsa politics and his role in shaping the party’s direction in the South-South.

His decision to leave the party marks a dramatic shift and raises questions about internal dynamics within the PDP that may have prompted his exit.

  • Tinubu Moves to Revoke Tompolo’s $144 Million Pipeline Surveillance Contract as APC Chieftain Issues Urgent Caution

Tinubu Moves to Revoke Tompolo’s $144 Million Pipeline Surveillance Contract as APC Chieftain Issues Urgent Caution

Fresh Uncertainty Grips Niger Delta as Presidency Reviews Multi-Billion-Naira Oil Security Deal

There are growing indications that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is moving to revoke the multi-billion-naira pipeline surveillance contract awarded to Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, and other private operators in the Niger Delta.

Ejes Gist News gathered that the contract, reportedly valued at approximately N48 billion annually—now about $144 million following an upward review—forms part of the Federal Government’s strategy to combat crude oil theft, illegal refining, and pipeline vandalism in the oil-producing region.

    Tompolo

The review specifically targets Tantita Security Services Limited, the firm owned by Tompolo and his brothers, which has been at the forefront of the surveillance framework since its inception under the previous administration.

    The Key Players

The surveillance arrangement involves several influential figures in the Niger Delta:

    Company Principal
Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo)
Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, Olu of Warri
    Maton Engineering Limited Mathew Tonlagha

The contract has become one of the most politically sensitive elements of Nigeria’s oil security architecture—both because of its financial scale and its reliance on private security operators with deep regional influence.

Ejes Gist News reports that the upward review of the contract, which Tompolo and his brothers reportedly kept from public knowledge, has intensified rivalry among former militant leaders and other regional power brokers. Some are said to be seeking a share of the surveillance framework or advocating for its complete restructuring.

    Why the Review?

Inside sources indicate that the Federal Government’s review is part of a broader reassessment of measures aimed at increasing crude oil production and stabilizing export volumes.

Ejes Gist News learned that oil theft and sabotage have continued to affect output, with Nigeria failing to meet its 1.5 million barrels per day (mbpd) crude oil production quota approved by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). This shortfall carries significant implications for public revenue and foreign exchange inflows.

    The Debate: Retain or Revoke?

    Arguments for Retention

Supporters of the current model argue that local operators possess community knowledge and intelligence networks that federal agencies lack, particularly in difficult creek terrain. They contend that engaging indigenous firms has helped reduce vandalism in certain areas.

    The arrangement reportedly led to:

    • Identification and dismantling of illegal tapping points

    • Destruction of illicit refining camps

    • Interception of unauthorized crude transport channels

    • Improved stability along major trunk lines

    Arguments for Revocation or Restructuring

    Critics have raised concerns about:

    • Oversight and transparency in contract execution

    • Concentration of influence in the hands of a few individuals

    • Exclusion of other stakeholders from the benefits

    • Financial scale of the contract

Some stakeholders in the region have called for either a restructuring to ensure broader participation by additional firms or a total revocation of the contract in its entirety.

    APC Chieftain Issues Strong Warning

Amid the uncertainty, a legal practitioner and APC chieftain, Blessing Agbomhere, has urged the Federal Government to retain the pipeline surveillance contract, describing it as a strategic national instrument critical to Nigeria’s economic stability and security architecture.

In a public communication addressed to President Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, and the leadership of the National Assembly, Agbomhere argued that the surveillance framework has substantially curtailed crude oil theft and strengthened output in the Niger Delta.

“This is not conjecture; it is an empirical reality,” he said, citing renewed investor engagement and improved fiscal predictability.

Agbomhere, who serves as the South South Zonal Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, noted that conventional security deployments had struggled to dismantle criminal networks operating across the creeks and offshore installations.

He warned that abruptly dismantling what he described as a functioning security architecture could:

    • Create an intelligence vacuum

    • Embolden bunkering syndicates

    • Threaten national revenue at a sensitive economic period

“The surveillance contract has functioned not merely as a protective shield for pipelines but as a stabilising mechanism for regional peace,” he stated.

He nonetheless emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, noting that legislative oversight and performance audits are essential.

“No public contract is beyond scrutiny, but reform must not degenerate into regression.”

    International Engagement Raises Eyebrows

It was gathered that Mathew Tonlagha, vice chairman of Tantita Security Services and owner of Maton Engineering Nigeria Limited, recently entered into a six-month agreement with a Washington-based public affairs firm, Valcour Global Public Strategy.

According to public records, the contract:

    • Value: $120,000 per month

    • Duration: December 15, 2025, to June 14, 2026

    • Purpose: Strengthening bilateral engagement between Nigeria and the United States, including outreach to media and policymakers

While some view the move as part of broader corporate diplomacy, others interpret it within the context of heightened scrutiny surrounding pipeline security operations.

    House of Representatives Launches Probe

The House of Representatives has commenced an investigation into the award and execution of the pipeline surveillance contracts involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) under former Managing Director, Mele Kyari.

The investigation is expected to examine:

    • Compliance with procurement guidelines

    • Performance benchmarks and achievements

    • Financial oversight mechanisms

    • Value for money

    What Analysts Are Saying

Industry analysts suggest the Federal Government’s eventual decision could take several forms:

    Option Implication
Maintain current structure With stricter performance targets and oversight
Divide coverage among additional contractors Broader participation, reduced concentration
Increase role of state security agencies Shift away from private operators
Partial restructuring Hybrid model combining private and public security

Any change, stakeholders say, would likely reshape the balance of influence in the Niger Delta and signal the administration’s long-term strategy for securing oil infrastructure.

What This Means for the Niger Delta

    The contract’s financial scale—roughly N48 billion per year—supports:

    • Logistics and surveillance operations

    • Staffing and employment

    • Subcontracting across several communities

For a region where employment opportunities remain limited, the contract represents a significant economic lever. Its revocation or restructuring could have far-reaching implications for stability and youth engagement.

    Awaiting Tinubu’s Decision

The Federal Government has yet to make a final pronouncement on the future of the surveillance contract. However, the outcome of the ongoing review and legislative probe is expected to determine whether the current framework will be retained, adjusted, or significantly restructured.

For now, attention remains focused on Abuja, as stakeholders across the Niger Delta await clarity on a contract that sits at the intersection of security, politics, and Nigeria’s oil economy.

Details Emerge: Nigerian Government Suspends Pilgrimage to Israel as Iran War Intensifies

NCPC Halts Travel to Holy Land Indefinitely as Security Situation Worsens Following Iran Strikes

The Federal Government has announced the immediate suspension of all Christian pilgrimages to Israel citing the escalating security crisis in the Middle East following the outbreak of war between Iran and US-Israeli forces.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Stephen Adegbite, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lagos during a press briefing shortly after 500 pilgrims landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport from the 2025 Main Pilgrimage exercise.

Ejes Gist News reports that the suspension takes immediate effect and affects both the Commission’s planned pilgrimages and those organized by private operators.

    Why the Suspension?

Adegbite cited recent military developments in the region as the primary reason for the suspension.

“You are aware of the latest security developments in Israel and the wider Middle East.”

“In view of the state of emergency declared by Israeli authorities and restrictions on public gatherings, the Commission has decided to put on hold all pilgrimages both by the Commission and private operators until the security situation normalises.”

The suspension comes as Israel remains on high alert following the US-Israeli military operation that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several members of his family, triggering threats of retaliation from Tehran.

Ejes Gist News gathered that the Commission acted proactively to prevent any Nigerian citizens from being caught in the crossfire as tensions continue to mount across the region.

    2025 Pilgrimage Concluded Successfully

The Executive Secretary revealed that over 4,000 Nigerian Christian pilgrims were successfully airlifted to the Holy Land during the 2025 exercise, which began on December 29, 2025, with the inaugural flight departing from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Key statistics from the 2025 pilgrimage:

    Metric Details
    Total pilgrims airlifted Over 4,000
    Aircraft used Boeing 777-300
Seating capacity 525 (largest ever used for Christian pilgrimage in Nigeria)
    Duration December 29, 2025 – March 2026
    Incidents reported None

Adegbite noted that the Boeing 777-300 aircraft with 525 seating capacity was the largest aircraft ever used for Christian pilgrimage airlift in Nigeria.

All 4,000+ pilgrims returned safely without any reported incidents, he confirmed.

Ejes Gist News learned that the successful completion of the 2025 exercise without any security breaches provided some relief to Commission officials, even as they now contend with the uncertainty created by the regional crisis.

    Safety First

The NCPC boss emphasized that the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remain paramount, noting that the Commission is closely monitoring the situation.

“The Federal Government places premium on peace and security. We therefore advise Nigerians to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine national security or diplomatic relations.”

He cautioned Nigerians against engaging in protests or actions that could escalate tensions arising from the crisis.

How Long Will the Suspension Last?

According to Adegbite, the suspension of pilgrimage activities will remain in force until international travel to Israel is deemed safe.

This means no Nigerian Christian pilgrimages will be approved—whether by the Commission or private operators—until the security situation in the Middle East stabilizes.

    Gratitude to Tinubu, First Lady

Adegbite expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented support for both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages.

He also acknowledged the contributions made by:

    • First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu

    • Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume

He credited their support for the successful completion of the 2025 exercise without any security breaches or incidents.

    Call for Prayers

Adegbite urged Christians and peace advocates to continue praying for stability in Jerusalem and across the Middle East to prevent a full-blown humanitarian crisis.

“We urge all Nigerians of faith to pray for peace in Jerusalem and the entire Middle East region. What is happening there affects the whole world, and we must not be indifferent.”

    Context: The Iran-Israel Crisis

The suspension comes against the backdrop of:

    • US-Israeli military strikes on Iranian leadership targets

    • Death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the attacks

    • Confirmed death of Khamenei’s wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, from injuries sustained in the strike

    • State of emergency declared in Israel

    • Restrictions on public gatherings imposed by Israeli authorities

    • Threats of retaliation from Tehran

The conflict has raised fears of a broader regional war that could engulf multiple countries and disrupt travel across the Middle East.

    What This Means for Pilgrims

    Question Answer

  • Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today – March 4, 2026: Naira Crashes

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today – March 4, 2026: Naira Crashes

Fresh Volatility Hits Forex Market as Gap Widens Between Official and Parallel Rates

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate recorded fresh volatility on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, with the local currency weakening across both the official Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) and the parallel black market.

Data from the FMDQ Securities Exchange shows the naira trading at an average of ₦1,377.04 per US dollar in the official window—marking a significant depreciation from recent sessions and raising concerns about renewed pressure on the currency.

    Official Exchange Rate (CBN Window)

According to market data from the official segment:

    Currency Official Rate (NAFEM)
    1 US Dollar ₦1,377.04

The official rate is determined through supply and demand dynamics within the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window and other approved trading platforms supervised by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Commercial banks and authorised dealers execute transactions within this framework under regulatory oversight. The rate applies to government transactions, corporate forex allocations, and regulated international payments.

    Black Market Exchange Rate Today

In the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market, rates continue to trade at a premium to the official window due to liquidity pressures and strong retail demand for foreign currency.

Currency dealers in major commercial hubs such as Lagos and Abuja quoted the following ranges on Wednesday morning:

    Market Buying Rate Selling Rate
Parallel Market (Black Market) ₦1,360 ₦1,385

Note: These figures may vary slightly depending on location, transaction volume, and dealer margins. The black market operates outside formal regulatory supervision, with rates driven primarily by demand from individuals and small businesses seeking immediate dollar access.

    Why the Rates Differ

The persistent gap between the official and black market exchange rates is influenced by several structural factors:

    Factor Impact
Dollar Supply Constraints Limited foreign inflows relative to mounting demand
Speculative Demand Importers and investors hedge against currency depreciation
Policy Adjustments Ongoing forex reforms and liquidity interventions by CBN
Global Dollar Strength International currency market movements affect emerging market currencies
End-Month Demand Pressure Businesses and individuals meeting offshore obligations

Nigeria operates a managed float system, where the exchange rate is influenced by market forces but remains subject to regulatory interventions by the Central Bank.

    How Exchange Rates Affect Nigerians

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate directly impacts virtually every sector of the economy:

    Sector Impact
Import Costs Higher exchange rates increase prices of imported goods
Fuel Pricing Petroleum product imports are dollar-denominated
School Fees Parents paying foreign tuition face higher costs
Medical Tourism Healthcare payments abroad become more expensive
Inflation Currency depreciation feeds into consumer prices
Foreign Investment Volatility affects investor confidence

Businesses dependent on imported raw materials remain particularly sensitive to forex fluctuations.

    Market Outlook

Financial analysts note that sustained improvement in dollar liquidity, increased non-oil exports, and stable crude oil production remain critical to strengthening the naira.

The CBN continues to implement monetary measures aimed at stabilising the currency and narrowing the spread between official and parallel market rates. However, market observers suggest that without significant inflows, pressure on the naira may persist in the short term.

    What Analysts Are Saying

Currency analysts point to several factors behind Wednesday’s depreciation:

    • End-month demand from businesses settling foreign obligations

    • Speculative activity in the parallel market

    • Market sentiment following recent policy announcements

    • Global dollar strength against emerging market currencies

“The naira is facing renewed headwinds as dollar demand outstrips available supply,” one Lagos-based currency analyst told Ejes Gist News.

“Until we see sustained inflows—either from oil exports, diaspora remittances, or foreign portfolio investment—the pressure will remain.”

    Summary

    Market Rate (₦/$) Movement
    Official (NAFEM) ₦1,377.04 Depreciated
Parallel Market (Black Market) ₦1,360 – ₦1,385 Premium sustained

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate today reflects ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, with the gap between official and parallel rates highlighting structural liquidity constraints.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has elected Chief Solomon Arenyeka, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, as its new State Chairman, following a consensus State Congress held Tuesday at the Cenotaph in Asaba.

Arenyeka’s emergence marks the culmination of a major political realignment that began in April 2025, when he led thousands of his supporters across the state to defect from the PDP to the APC, citing the need to align Delta State with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s renewed vision for Nigeria.

State Ex-Officio (x6) Chief Joseph Otuh, Chief Paulinus Akpor, Elder Sam Akpoveta, Hon. Michael Diden, Chief Mrs. Cecilia Aboh, Mr. Godwin Etumah

    How It Happened

The congress was presided over by the State Congress Electoral Committee chaired by Engr. Vita Abba, who declared the new executive elected after delegates affirmed the consensus candidates.

“The affirmation process was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines,” Abba said.

Before the election, former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, moved a motion for the dissolution of the outgone State Working Committee led by Elder Omeni Sobotie. The motion was seconded by Olorogun O’tega Emerhor and unanimously adopted by delegates.

Oborevwori’s Marching Order: “Total Victory in 2027”

Addressing party faithful after the inauguration, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori charged the new executive to begin immediate preparations for what he termed “total victory” in the 2027 general elections.

“Our mission is unequivocal. We must secure victory at every level – the Presidency, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Governorship and the State House of Assembly,” Oborevwori declared.

The governor expressed confidence that Delta APC would deliver massive votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all party candidates in the next electoral cycle.

He commended the peaceful conduct of congresses across the state’s 270 wards, 25 local government areas, describing it as a testament to the party’s internal democracy.

“There was no imposition. What we witnessed is broad consultation, agreement and inclusiveness. This structure belongs to all of us,” he stated.

From PDP Chairman to APC Chairman: Arenyeka’s Political Journey

Arenyeka’s emergence as APC State Chairman is significant given his political history. Until April 2025, he served as a prominent leader in the PDP, the party that has dominated Delta State politics for decades.

His defection, along with thousands of supporters across the state, was widely seen as a game-changer for APC’s fortunes in the traditionally PDP stronghold.

Political analysts note that placing a former opposition party chairman at the helm of the APC in Delta sends a strong signal about the party’s intent to compete seriously in 2027.

Outgoing Chairman’s Charge: “Humility Over Ability”

Immediate past State Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, urged the new leadership to lead with humility and collective purpose.

“In politics, what we have is not ‘I’ but ‘we.’ The interest of the people is more important than personal interests.”

“Ability may take a man to the top, but humility keeps him there.”

Sobotie expressed confidence that the APC in its present form was formidable enough to overwhelm any opposition in the state, pointing to the influx of defectors from other parties as evidence of growing strength.

Arenyeka’s Acceptance Speech: “We Have Heard the Marching Orders”

In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman acknowledged the historic nature of his emergence and the weight of responsibility placed on his shoulders.

“I am fully aware of the weight of this responsibility and do not take it lightly. We consider ourselves privileged to serve and we pledge to justify the confidence imposed in us.”

Arenyeka assured party members that the new executive would uphold:

    • Hard work and integrity

    • Transparency and teamwork

    • Consensus-building and accountability

He paid tribute to Governor Oborevwori for what he described as “exemplary leadership and unifying disposition,” pledging that under his watch, Delta APC would become a model for other states.

“We have heard the marching orders from our leader. By God’s grace, we shall deliver all APC candidates in the 2027 elections.”

What the Defection Means for Delta Politics

Arenyeka’s emergence as APC chairman after leaving the PDP has significant implications:

    Factor Implication
Voter base His supporters followed him from PDP, expanding APC’s grassroots reach
Opposition strength PDP loses a seasoned political leader to the rival camp
2027 calculations APC now has insider knowledge of PDP’s strongholds and strategies
Political realignment Signals that APC is serious about breaking PDP’s hold on Delta

    What’s Next for Delta APC

With the new executive in place, attention now shifts to:

    Priority Timeline
    Grassroots mobilization Immediate
Ward and LGA strengthening Q2 2026
    Campaign structures Late 2026
    2027 election preparations Ongoing

    Reactions from Party Stakeholders

The congress drew party leaders and stakeholders from across the state and beyond, with a charged atmosphere of celebration and unity.

Political observers note that the peaceful transition and consensus-building approach positions Delta APC strongly for the electoral battles ahead. The presence of former PDP heavyweights in the new executive is expected to boost the party’s credibility in communities that have traditionally voted against APC.

Former PwC Africa Tax Leader to Replace Doris Uzoka-Anite as Senate Confirmation Awaited

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Taiwo Oyedele, the former Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, as the new Minister of State for Finance, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced on Tuesday.

Oyedele’s nomination comes months after his committee masterminded the sweeping tax laws recently assented to by the President, positioning him as a key architect of the administration’s fiscal reform agenda.

The Shuffle: Uzoka-Anite Moves to Budget Ministry

According to a statement by Onanuga, Oyedele will replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State.

“President Tinubu has today conveyed the nomination of Oyedele to the Senate for confirmation in a letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio,” Onanuga said.

Uzoka-Anite’s move marks her third portfolio in the Tinubu administration, having previously served in various capacities since the President took office in 2023.

His extensive experience in tax policy and fiscal reform made him a natural choice to chair the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms when Tinubu appointed him in 2023.

Key Achievement: Nigeria’s New Tax Laws

Oyedele’s most significant contribution to the Tinubu administration to date has been leading the team that masterminded Nigeria’s new tax legislation.

The tax laws, which Tinubu assented to in recent months, represent a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s fiscal framework and are expected to:

    • Broaden the tax base

    • Improve revenue collection

    • Reduce multiple taxation

    • Enhance ease of doing business

His nomination to the finance ministry suggests the President intends to place the architect of these reforms in a position to oversee their implementation.

Beyond his consulting and policy work, Oyedele maintains strong ties to academia:

    • Professor at Babcock University, Ogun State

Analysts view Oyedele’s nomination as a strategic move by President Tinubu to:

    1. Ensure continuity in the implementation of the new tax laws

    2. Strengthen technical expertise at the finance ministry

    3. Signal commitment to fiscal reform and revenue generation

    4. Leverage private sector experience in public financial management

    Senate Confirmation Next

Oyedele’s nomination now awaits confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. President Tinubu has formally conveyed the nomination in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

If confirmed, Oyedele will assume office as Minister of State for Finance, working alongside the substantive Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

    Uzoka-Anite’s New Role

Doris Uzoka-Anite, who moves to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning as Minister of State, brings her own experience to the portfolio. Her reassignment is seen as part of the President’s broader effort to optimize his cabinet based on performance and evolving priorities.

    Reaction So Far

The nomination has drawn mixed reactions from stakeholders:

    • Reform advocates have welcomed the choice, citing Oyedele’s technical expertise and track record

  • BREAKING: Wife of Slain Iranian Leader Khamenei Dies from Injuries Sustained in US Airstrike

BREAKING: Wife of Slain Iranian Leader Khamenei Dies from Injuries Sustained in US Airstrike

Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh Succumbs to Wounds Two Days After Husband’s Death in Precision Strike on Tehran Compound

The wife of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died from injuries sustained in the US airstrike that killed her husband earlier this week, Iranian state media confirmed Tuesday.

Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, believed to be 79 years old, initially survived the missile strike that destroyed the Supreme Leader’s residential compound in Tehran but succumbed to her injuries two days later, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

Her death brings the total number of Khamenei’s immediate family members killed in the attack to at least five, including:

    • One daughter

    • One grandchild

    • One daughter-in-law

    • One son-in-law

A Devastating Blow to Iran’s First Family

The unprecedented precision strike on Khamenei’s heavily guarded compound has sent shockwaves across the Middle East and marks one of the most dramatic escalations in tensions between Washington and Tehran in decades.

Iranian state television confirmed that the compound was hit in what it described as a “precision military operation,” resulting in catastrophic damage and multiple fatalities among family members believed to be present at the time.

Medical teams reportedly worked around the clock to stabilize Bagherzadeh in the aftermath of the attack, but her injuries proved too severe.

Her death adds another layer of tragedy to an already historic and destabilizing event that has plunged Iran into mourning and raised urgent questions about the country’s political future.

A Life Away from the Spotlight

Born into a religious family, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh married Ali Khamenei in 1965—years before he rose to prominence during the revolutionary movement that would ultimately overthrow the Shah of Iran in 1979.

The couple had four sons and two daughters over the course of their 61-year marriage.

Despite her husband’s ascent to the pinnacle of political and religious authority in the Islamic Republic, Bagherzadeh consistently avoided public life. Unlike spouses of political leaders in many other countries, she did not assume ceremonial roles, spearhead public initiatives, or maintain a visible presence at official events.

Her absence from the public eye was widely interpreted as a deliberate choice in line with her personal convictions and the political culture surrounding Iran’s clerical leadership.

    Rare Glimpse into Private Life

In one of her few recorded interviews, granted to Iranian state media in 2011, Bagherzadeh offered rare insight into her role during the tumultuous years of revolution and repression.

Reflecting on her husband’s struggle against the Shah, she downplayed her own involvement:

“I think my biggest role was to preserve a calm atmosphere in our home so that he could do his work in peace.”

She described visiting him in prison during periods of detention under the Shah’s regime, carefully shielding him from family hardships:

“I would sometimes visit him in prison without telling him about our problems. In response to his questions about us, I would only give him good news.”

Although she acknowledged participating in distributing pamphlets, carrying messages, and hiding sensitive documents during the revolutionary struggle, she dismissed those efforts as insignificant.

    On Family Life and Leadership

In the same interview, Bagherzadeh was asked whether her husband contributed to household responsibilities. Her response reflected both realism and admiration:

“He neither currently has time [to help] nor do I expect him to do so.”

However, she noted one quality she considered exemplary:

“One admirable trait he has which could be as an example for others is that even though he often comes home tired from work, he does his best to keep work-related problems away from home.”

The remarks offered a rare glimpse into the domestic dynamics of a household that existed at the center of Iranian political power yet remained shielded from public scrutiny for decades.

    Political Uncertainty and Global Reactions

The deaths of Khamenei and his wife come at a moment of already heightened regional instability. Analysts warn the strike could trigger far-reaching consequences for Iran’s leadership structure and its relations with the United States and its allies.

Under Iran’s constitution, the Assembly of Experts is responsible for appointing a new Supreme Leader in the event of a vacancy. However, the sudden and violent nature of Khamenei’s death has complicated the transition process. Observers warn that internal power struggles among political and military factions could intensify in the coming days.

State media outlets in Tehran have condemned the airstrike as an act of aggression and vowed that Iran will respond “at a time and manner of its choosing.”

There has been no immediate detailed public statement from US officials regarding the operation, though President Donald Trump previously hailed the broader military campaign as a “significant success.”

International reactions have been swift. Several governments have called for restraint, expressing concern that the situation could spiral into broader regional conflict.

A Legacy Intertwined with Iran’s Modern History

While Ali Khamenei’s decades-long rule shaped Iran’s domestic policies and foreign relations in profound ways, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh’s legacy is of a different nature—quiet, private, and deeply personal.

Her life was inextricably linked to one of the most consequential political careers in the Middle East. Yet by her own account, she saw her contribution not in public declarations or formal authority, but in maintaining stability within her home during years marked by revolution, war, sanctions, and internal unrest.

As Iran confronts an uncertain future following the deaths of its Supreme Leader and members of his family, the passing of Bagherzadeh closes a chapter that began more than six decades ago with a marriage forged long before power and global scrutiny defined their lives.

  • Governor Okpebholo Orders Edo Govt Officials To Resign Immediately or Face Disqualification

Governor Okpebholo Orders Edo Govt Officials To Resign Immediately or Face Disqualification

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered all public servants, political appointees, and government officials intending to contest in the upcoming elections to resign on or before March 1, 2026.

The directive, contained in a Government Special Announcement dated February 28, 2026, warns that any officer who participates in party primaries or any electoral process without first vacating their position risks automatic disqualification.

    The Deadline

The Governor’s order gives affected officials less than 24 hours to comply, with the deadline set for Sunday, March 1, 2026.

According to the statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, the measure is in strict compliance with the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.

“This directive is issued in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026, and is aimed at ensuring that all aspiring candidates do not run the risk of disqualification by the relevant electoral authorities,” the statement read.

Why the Governor Issued the Order

The Edo State Government outlined several key reasons for the directive:

    Reason Explanation
Legal Compliance Strict adherence to the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026
Prevent Disqualification Protect aspirants from being disqualified by electoral authorities
Fairness and Transparency Ensure a level playing field for all aspirants
Institutional Integrity Safeguard the neutrality of public institutions
Separate Governance from Politics Prevent governance responsibilities from being compromised by partisan engagements

“Government emphasizes that this requirement is intended to promote fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all aspirants, while also safeguarding the integrity and neutrality of public institutions,” the statement added.

    Who Is Affected?

    The resignation directive applies to:

    • Public servants employed by the Edo State Government

    • Political appointees serving in the current administration

    • Government officials at various levels who plan to run for elective offices

    • MDAs staff intending to participate in party primaries or electoral processes

What Happens If They Don’t Comply?

The government warning is unambiguous: failure to resign within the stipulated timeline could lead to disqualification by relevant electoral authorities.

This means any official who participates in party primaries or campaigns while still holding government office risks being barred from contesting altogether.

    Wide Circulation Ordered

Governor Okpebholo has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to give the announcement the widest possible circulation to ensure full compliance.

This suggests the administration is serious about enforcement and wants to eliminate any claims of ignorance when the deadline passes.

Legal Context: The Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026

The Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 contains provisions requiring public officers seeking elective positions to resign at least 30 days before party primaries or election dates.

The Edo State Government’s directive aligns with Section 82(3) of the Act, which states:

“Any public officer who intends to contest an election under this Act shall resign, withdraw, or retire from office 30 days prior to the date of nomination for the election.”

    Political Implications

The directive comes as political parties begin preparations for upcoming primaries and election cycles. Analysts suggest the Governor’s强硬 stance serves multiple purposes:

    • Cleansing the system: Removes potential conflicts of interest where officials combine governance with campaigning

    • Setting precedent: Positions Edo State as a model for electoral compliance

    • Avoiding legal battles: Prevents post-election disputes arising from candidacy challenges

    Reactions So Far

Political observers and civil society groups have largely welcomed the directive, describing it as a bold step toward electoral integrity.

However, some affected officials are believed to be scrambling to meet the tight deadline, with speculation mounting over who among the Governor’s team may be eyeing elective positions.

    What Next?

With the March 1 deadline now hours away, all eyes are on the Edo State Government Secretariat to see which officials tender their resignations before the cut-off.

The Governor’s office has indicated it will monitor compliance closely and expects full cooperation from all MDAs.

Ejes Gist News Nigeria will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates on which officials resign before the deadline.

  • What The U.S. Military Presence In Nigeria Really Means For Security

What The U.S. Military Presence In Nigeria Really Means For Security

The question of U.S. military presence in Nigeria continues to generate debate across diplomatic, security and policy circles. Discussions often focus on whether such cooperation strengthens national security or risks compromising sovereignty.

Nigeria faces persistent threats from insurgency, banditry, piracy and transnational crime. In this context, defence collaboration between Abuja and Washington has evolved over the years through training, intelligence-sharing and logistical support. Ejes Gist News reports that there is no publicly confirmed establishment of a permanent United States military base on Nigerian soil, according to official statements from both governments.

    Background: U.S.–Nigeria Security Cooperation

Security engagement between Nigeria and the United States has primarily taken the form of:

    • Military training and advisory support
    • Counterterrorism intelligence sharing
    • Arms sales and defence equipment transfers
    • Joint maritime security initiatives

Nigeria has been battling insurgency in the North-East, largely attributed to Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province. The scale of these threats prompted closer collaboration with international partners, including Washington.

The Nigerian military has also worked with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees U.S. defence operations across the African continent. AFRICOM’s role typically includes capacity building rather than permanent troop deployment.

    What “Military Presence” Actually Means

The phrase “U.S. military presence” in Nigeria does not equate to a standing American combat base. Instead, experts describe it as a combination of:

    1. Temporary deployments for joint exercises.
    2. Intelligence and surveillance support.
    3. Technical assistance in counterterrorism operations.
    4. Training programmes for Nigerian armed forces.

Security analysts note that cooperation intensified following high-profile terrorist incidents, including the 2014 abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, which drew global attention and international assistance.

    Implications for Nigeria’s Security

Supporters argue that U.S. collaboration enhances Nigeria’s operational capacity in several areas:

    • Intelligence capabilities: Access to satellite imagery and signals intelligence improves surveillance of insurgent movements.
    • Equipment modernisation: Advanced aircraft and surveillance systems strengthen air and ground operations.
    • Professional training: Exposure to international standards improves tactical coordination and counterinsurgency doctrine.

The sale of A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to Nigeria, approved by Washington in 2017, represented a significant upgrade in air combat capability against insurgent groups.

    Sovereignty and Political Sensitivities

Concerns about sovereignty often shape public discourse. Nigerian officials have repeatedly stated that any foreign military engagement must respect national laws and territorial integrity.

The Federal Government has maintained that cooperation agreements do not involve ceding control of Nigerian territory. Analysts observe that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous country and one of its largest economies, remains cautious about hosting foreign bases.

    Regional Security Context

Nigeria plays a leading role in West African security initiatives, including the Multinational Joint Task Force combating insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin. Collaboration with external partners is often framed as complementary to regional efforts.

Across Africa, debates over foreign military footprints have intensified, particularly following shifts in defence arrangements in countries such as Niger and Mali. These developments have influenced regional perceptions of international security partnerships.

    What It Means Going Forward

The trajectory of U.S.–Nigeria defence relations will likely depend on:

    • The evolution of insurgent threats.
    • Nigeria’s internal defence reforms.
    • Broader geopolitical competition on the African continent.
    • Domestic political consensus regarding foreign military engagement.

Security experts emphasize that long-term stability depends not only on military cooperation but also on governance reforms, economic development and community-based conflict resolution.

While the phrase “U.S. military presence” may suggest permanent deployment, available official information indicates a structured security partnership centered on training, intelligence and equipment support rather than a standing American base.

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate Today – March 2, 2026: Naira Holds Firm

Naira Steady as Dollar Trades Within Narrow Band in Official Market, Parallel Market Hits ₦1,400

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate remained relatively stable on Monday, March 2, 2026, with the Nigerian currency holding its ground across both the official Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) and the parallel black market.

Data from the FMDQ Securities Exchange shows the naira trading at an average of ₦1,359.78 per US dollar in the official window, reflecting continued stability within the ₦1,350–₦1,370 band observed in recent trading sessions.

Official Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate

At the NAFEM window, which operates under the oversight of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the naira continues to trade within a managed float regime introduced following the government’s foreign exchange reforms.

Key facts about the official market:

    • Managed float regime: Rates are determined by demand and supply within authorised platforms

    • Authorised dealers: Transactions cleared through banks and licensed dealers

    • Daily publication: Rates published by the FMDQ Securities Exchange

    • Transparency focus: Designed to reduce arbitrage and speculative pressure

Financial analysts attribute the relative stability in early 2026 to sustained foreign exchange inflows, robust diaspora remittances, and policy tightening measures implemented by the Central Bank to curb speculative demand.

Black Market Dollar to Naira Rate Today

In the parallel market, commonly referred to as the black market, the Dollar to Naira exchange rate continues to trade at a modest premium to the official window.

Currency dealers operating in major commercial hubs such as Lagos and Abuja quoted the following ranges on Monday morning:

    Market Buying Rate Selling Rate
    Parallel Market (Black Market) ₦1,370 – ₦1,385 ₦1,390 – ₦1,400

Note: Rates vary by location and transaction volume. Urgent or large-volume transactions typically attract higher rates.

The gap between the official and black market rates has narrowed significantly compared to previous periods marked by sharp divergence. Market participants cite improved liquidity and enhanced regulatory monitoring as key contributing factors.

    Why the Rates Differ

The persistent disparity between official and parallel market rates stems from structural features of Nigeria’s foreign exchange system:

    Factor Impact
Access limitations Not all individuals and businesses qualify for official FX allocations
Documentation requirements Formal transactions require compliance documentation (Form A, Form M, etc.)
Speed of execution Parallel market transactions are often faster, especially for urgent needs
Demand pressure Importers and travellers frequently turn to informal channels during peak demand periods

What This Means for Businesses and Individuals

For import-dependent businesses, those making tuition payments, travellers, and individuals executing international transactions, the effective exchange rate will depend on several variables:

    • Transaction channel: Bank, fintech platform, or BDC operator

    • Volume of purchase: Bulk transactions may attract better rates

    • Applicable fees: Service charges and spreads vary by provider

    Market Drivers and Outlook

Economic observers continue to monitor several key indicators that will influence the Dollar to Naira exchange rate trajectory throughout 2026:

    1. External reserves – Current levels and monthly fluctuations

    2. Crude oil export receipts – Nigeria’s primary foreign exchange earner

    3. Foreign portfolio inflows – Investor confidence in Nigerian assets

    4. Monetary policy direction – Interest rate decisions and open market operations

    CBN’s Position

The Central Bank of Nigeria maintains that ongoing reforms aim to deepen liquidity, enhance transparency, and sustain exchange rate convergence across all market segments.

In recent communications, CBN officials have reiterated their commitment to a market-driven exchange rate framework while intervening when necessary to prevent excessive volatility.

    Summary

    Market Rate (₦/$) Trend
    Official (NAFEM) ₦1,359.78 Stable
Parallel Market (Black Market) ₦1,370 – ₦1,400 Slight premium

The Dollar to Naira exchange rate today reflects continued stability in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, with the gap between official and parallel rates narrowing—a positive signal for the Central Bank’s reform agenda.

  • BREAKING: UK Greenlights US to Use British Bases to Strike Iran – Starmer Drops Bombshell Statement

BREAKING: UK Greenlights US to Use British Bases to Strike Iran – Starmer Drops Bombshell Statement

Prime Minister Confirms RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia to Be Used for “Limited Defensive Purpose” as Middle East Crisis Escalates

The United Kingdom has authorized the United States to launch strikes on Iranian missile sites from British military bases, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer confirmed Sunday evening, in a dramatic escalation of Western involvement in the growing conflict with Tehran.

The decision marks a significant shift in the UK’s position, coming just weeks after reports indicated the British government had not given permission for such use of its facilities.

    What Bases Are Involved?

According to the BBC, the US is likely to utilize:

    • RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire – a key US Air Force base in Europe

    • Diego Garcia – the British Indian Ocean Territory military facility

Both bases have historically been used by the US military to conduct long-range heavy bombing missions, including operations in the Middle East.

Starmer’s Statement: “We Learned from Iraq”

In a video statement posted on social media Sunday evening, Starmer emphasized that the UK is not joining offensive strikes but has agreed to a limited, defensive role.

“It remains the case that the UK is not involved in the strikes on Iran. We played no role in the initial strikes and will not join offensive action now.”

The Prime Minister stressed that the government had learned lessons from the “mistakes of Iraq” and was acting strictly within international law.

“The basis of this decision is the collective self-defence of our allies and protecting British lives. Iran is pursuing a scorched-earth strategy.”

    Why the UK Agreed

Starmer outlined three key justifications for the decision:

    1. Protecting British lives – Approximately 200,000 British citizens are in the region, including residents, holidaymakers, and transit passengers

    2. Defending Gulf allies who have requested additional support

    3. Destroying missiles “at source” to prevent indiscriminate Iranian strikes

“The only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at source, in their storage depots, or the launchers which are used to fire the missiles,” Starmer explained.

“The United States has requested permission to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose. We have taken the decision to accept this request.”

    UK Aircraft Already in Action

The Prime Minister revealed that British aircraft were already “in the sky” over the Middle East as part of defensive operations to protect allies and citizens in the region.

On Sunday evening, Starmer confirmed that British jets had successfully intercepted Iranian strikes, though he reiterated that the UK played no role in the initial offensive operations.

    Regional Fallout Intensifies

The US and Israel began attacking Iranian targets early Saturday, with President Donald Trump encouraging the Iranian people to remove their government.

Iran has responded with attacks on US assets and countries hosting US military presence, including:

    • Bahrain

    • Qatar

    • United Arab Emirates

    • Kuwait

    • Iraq

    International Condemnation of Iran

The UK, France, and Germany issued a joint statement Sunday evening accusing Iran of carrying out “indiscriminate and disproportionate” strikes across the region.

The statement reflects growing European concern over Tehran’s retaliatory actions and the potential for broader regional destabilization.

    Trump Weighs In

US President Donald Trump had previously warned it “may be necessary” for the US to use RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for operations should Iran “decide not to make a deal.”

Following the UK’s announcement, Trump’s position appears to have secured the logistical support he signaled would be required.

    Evacuation Plans Underway

The BBC understands that UK government officials are now formulating contingency plans to potentially evacuate British nationals from the Middle East should airspace in the region remain closed.

With commercial flight disruptions likely to continue, the government is preparing for multiple scenarios to ensure citizen safety.

    Legal Justification

Starmer confirmed that the government would publish a summary of its legal advice, emphasizing that the decision to allow US use of British bases was in full accordance with international law.

“This is about preventing Iran firing missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk, and hitting countries that have not been involved,” he stated.

    Timeline of Key Developments

    Date Event
Saturday US and Israel launch initial strikes on Iran
Saturday UK confirms it played no role in offensive strikes
Sunday Starmer confirms British aircraft intercepting Iranian attacks
Sunday (evening) PM announces UK will allow US to use British bases for defensive strikes
Ongoing Evacuation plans being prepared for British nationals

    What This Means

The UK’s decision transforms its role in the conflict from a neutral observer to a logistical enabler of US military operations. While Starmer is careful to draw a line between “defensive” support and “offensive” participation, the distinction may carry little weight with Iran, which now views British territory as a launchpad for strikes against its sovereign soil.

For the 200,000 British citizens in the region, the calculus has also shifted—they are now citizens of a nation actively enabling strikes on their host country.

BREAKING: Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei Confirmed Dead as Trump Drops Bombshell: 48 Leaders Gone in One Shot

Operation Epic Fury Enters Day Two with Heavy Casualties, US Military Confirms First American Deaths

The United States and Israel have launched a major military offensive against Iran, with President Donald Trump claiming that more than 48 Iranian leaders have been killed in what the Pentagon has codenamed “Operation Epic Fury.”

Iranian state media has confirmed the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the strikes, marking a seismic shift in the escalating conflict between Tehran and the West.

    Trump Declares Success

In an interview with Fox News, Trump hailed the operation’s progress, stating:

“Nobody can believe the success we’re having, 48 leaders are gone in one shot. And it’s moving along rapidly.”

Speaking separately to CNBC, the president doubled down on his assessment, insisting the campaign was running ahead of schedule.

“We’re doing our job not just for us but for the world. And everything is ahead of schedule. Things are evolving in a very positive way right now, a very positive way.”

The military strikes, which began Saturday, are aimed at dismantling the Islamic Republic’s leadership structure and degrading its military capabilities, according to Pentagon sources.

    Iran Confirms Supreme Leader’s Death

In a development that has sent shockwaves through the Middle East, Iran’s official Nour News—affiliated with the country’s Supreme National Security Council—confirmed that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes on his office in Tehran.

“Iran’s leader attained martyrdom while carrying out his duties at his office,” the report stated.

The attack also reportedly claimed the lives of Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, grandchild, and one of his daughters-in-law.

The Iranian cabinet has since declared 40 days of national mourning and vowed retaliation, warning that the perpetrators of what it called a “major crime” would be held accountable.

    First US Casualties Confirmed

The interviews with Trump were conducted before the US military announced its first casualties in the conflict.

United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that three US service members have been killed in action and five others “seriously wounded” as part of Operation Epic Fury.

“Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions — and are in the process of being returned to duty,” CENTCOM stated in a post on X.

“Major combat operations continue and our response effort is ongoing.”

The identities of the fallen service members are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.

    Naval Engagements and Iranian Retaliation

CENTCOM also confirmed that US forces had struck an Iranian Jamaran-class corvette in the Gulf of Oman during the opening phase of operations.

“The ship is currently sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman at a Chah Bahar pier,” the command announced.

Trump later expanded on this, posting on social media that nine Iranian naval ships had been destroyed and that Iran’s naval headquarters had been “largely destroyed.”

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had struck the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier with ballistic missiles—a claim CENTCOM strongly denied as a “lie,” stating the missiles “didn’t even come close” and that the carrier continues launching aircraft in support of operations.

    Regional Fallout

The conflict has triggered broader instability across the region:

    Country Casualties / Impact
Israel Eight killed, 28 injured in missile barrage on Beit Shemesh region
United Arab Emirates Three confirmed dead, 58 injured from Iranian attacks
Pakistan 23 protesters killed in clashes, including 10 at US consulate in Karachi

The UAE’s Defense Ministry reported that 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles, and 541 drones have been launched toward the country since the conflict began.

    International Response

Oman, which previously mediated talks between the US and Iran, indicated that Tehran remains open to “any serious efforts of de-escalation.”

Trump told The Atlantic that Iranian leaders “want to talk, and I have agreed to talk,” though he provided no details on when or how such discussions would take place, acknowledging that “some of the people we were dealing with are gone.”

However, Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf struck a defiant tone, warning that America had “crossed our red line and must pay the price.”

    Domestic Reaction

A snap Reuters/Ipsos poll of 1,282 Americans found only 27 percent approve of the strikes, with 43 percent disapproving and 29 percent unsure.

In Iran, conflicting reports emerged about public reaction. While state media reported mourning, verified video footage obtained by AFP showed some Iranians taking to the streets cheering, playing celebratory music, and launching fireworks following reports of Khamenei’s death—a reflection of the deep divisions within Iranian society following the deadly crackdown on anti-government protests in January.

    What Happens Next

Under Iran’s constitutional procedures, an interim leadership council has been formed comprising the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council. They will assume leadership duties until a new Supreme Leader is determined.

Former CENTCOM commander General Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. told US media that the next 72 to 96 hours will be crucial to determine whether Iran can sustain a heavy barrage of retaliatory missile strikes against US bases and partners in the region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that strikes on Iran will “escalate in the days ahead.”
