  • Court Arraigns Osun Pastor For Allegedly Calling Gospel Artiste, Bunmi Akinnaanu A Pr0stitute

An Osun state pastor, Niyi Peter, was on Thursday arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo over the alleged defamation of popular gospel artiste, Bunmi Akinnaanu, also known by her stage name Omije Ojumi, on social media.

Peter, facing a three-count charge, after being accused of posting a picture of the artiste on social media and labelling it a “pr0stitute song,” sparking outrage among her fans and colleagues.

Appearing before Magistrate Dr Olusegun Ayilara, details from the charge sheet read that, “You, Apostle Niyi Peter, male, in the month of April 2024, at about 12:00 pm at Oke-Odo Area, Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did defame the character of one Bunmi Akinnaanu, a.k.a. Omije Ojumi, by posting her picture and tagging it ‘pr0stitute song’ on social media via your WhatsApp number.”

The clergyman was also accused of sending a threatening voice note to Akinnaanu, stating that she “will perish and never rise again.”

The charge further read, “You, Apostle Niyi Peter, on the same date, time, and place, conducted yourself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by falsely damaging the character of Bunmi Akinnaanu, a.k.a. Omije Ojumi.”

The offences are said to contravene sections 373, 88, and 249(D) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

  • Cabinet Reshuffle: Put Police Affairs Under Ministry Of Interior — Niger Delta Group Urges Tinubu

Cabinet Reshuffle: Put Police Affairs Under Ministry Of Interior — Niger Delta Group Urges Tinubu

The Niger Delta Rights Advocates, NDRA, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s plans to reshuffle his cabinet as announced by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President.

The NDRA recalled that it had previously called for a cabinet reshuffle earlier this year.

In anticipation of the president’s move, the rights group is urging that the Policy Coordination and Central Delivery Coordination Unit, CDCU, under the Presidency, remain free from political interference.

According to the NDRA: “This is the only way a proper Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of the performance of ministers, who are the salesmen of the administration’s policies and agenda, can receive fair and trustworthy assessment.”

In a statement issued by its Head of Research, Chuks Alozie, NDRA also called for transparency in the criteria used to evaluate public officials, including cabinet ministers.

It argued that public disclosure of these factors would foster greater accountability and ensure that the evaluation process is open to scrutiny.

Citing the implementation of the Steve Oronsaye report, NDRA proposed that the Ministry of Police Affairs be reintegrated into the Ministry of Interior.

“The NDRA wishes to propose that as part of strategy to implement the much talked about Steve Orasanye report on the harmonisation of MDAs and to help government cut cost, the Ministry of Police Affairs be integrated into the Interior Ministry under Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as the Ministry under Dr Tunji-Ojo has delivered on the critical elements of good governance and public accountability, which has increased citizens’ trust in the present administration.”

The group emphasised that the performance of ministries should be assessed “in terms of the level of achievement of the objectives of each ministry (effectiveness) or the level of costs incurred to achieve these objectives (efficiency).”

It said further: “We believe that the Interior Ministry under the current administration has hit that mark and signposts efficiency for a public agency.

“Furthermore, we challenge the Policy Coordination and the Central Delivery Coordination Unit (CDCU) to publish its benchmarks (tools/indicators) for further public scrutiny and contestation of logic in order to ensure that those public officials who fall terribly below bar, do not even get the chance to hold public offices in future (whether elective or appointment).

“It will also help ruling parties to cascade the idea of properly scrutinizing persons they nominate into public offices going forward.”

Understanding Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange Rate.

    What is the Black Market?
The black market is an unofficial exchange channel where currencies are traded without government regulation. Due to high demand and limited supply, this market often offers more competitive rates.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

    • Favorable Rates: Higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates

    Economic Policies:
Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. These policies can stabilize or destabilize the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand:
The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability:
Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions:
Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. For instance, a significant drop in oil prices negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy:
    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

    Using the Parallel Market Safely

    Tips for Transactions:

    • Verify Rates: Check reliable sources like Aboki FX for the latest rates.
    • Reputable Dealers: Engage with trusted Bureau De Change operators to avoid scams.

Is it legal to trade forex in the black market?

The EFCC slammed fresh 16-count charge against the former Kogi state governor at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja along with two others.

In the charge marked: CR/7781/2024, Bello, Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, are accused of spending over N110 billion of public funds to acquire several properties in Abuja and in Dubai.

The charge dated September 24 but filed on September 25, by the anti-graft agency’s lawyer, Mr kemi Pinheiro, SAN, accused Bello and co- defendants of criminal breach of trust, an offence punishable under Section 312 of the Penal Code Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.

  • Simon Ekpa Next as Police Arrest Cameroonian Separatist Leader Lucas Ayaba Cho in Norway

Simon Ekpa Next as Police Arrest Cameroonian Separatist Leader Lucas Ayaba Cho in Norway

Cameroonian Separatist Leader Lucas Ayaba Cho Arrested in Norway Amid Ongoing Conflict.

Lucas Ayaba Cho, a prominent figure in Cameroon’s Anglophone separatist movement, was arrested in Norway on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in the ongoing armed conflict in the Central African country. His lawyer revealed that the arrest was made on “charges based on his various expressions on social media.”

Cho has been a key player in the push for independence from Cameroon, where violence since 2016 has resulted in over 6,000 deaths and nearly a million displaced individuals. Many residents in the English-speaking regions claim discrimination at the hands of the French-speaking majority.

Global human rights organization Amnesty International has accused both government forces and armed separatists of human rights abuses, including killings, rapes, and torture of civilians.

A Cameroonian official indicated to the BBC that Norway and Cameroon have a security agreement which may facilitate Cho’s extradition in the near future. However, his lawyer stated that he was unaware of any extradition request.

Describing himself as a liberation leader, Cho is known for commanding the Ambazonian Defence Forces (ADF) from his base in Norway. He has been linked to a recent campaign that included a two-week lockdown aimed at boycotting schools. His militant approach has drawn criticism, particularly after ADF fighters targeted taxi drivers, demanding they repaint their vehicles to reflect the colors of the proposed state of Ambazonia.

The ADF’s political branch, the Ambazonia Governing Council, has also instituted a “liberation tax” on residents in the Anglophone regions to fund their conflict against the government. Cho’s history of anti-institutional radicalism dates back to the 1990s, including an expulsion from the University of Buea for protest activities.

Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service (KRIPOS) stated that Cho “had a central role in an ongoing armed conflict in Cameroon.” On Wednesday, Norwegian investigators sought his custody from the Oslo District Court, with prosecutor Anette Berger noting, “We are in an early phase of the investigation, and there are several investigative steps that remain.”

Emmanuel Nsahlai, a US-based lawyer representing victims of the Anglophone crisis, called Cho’s arrest a “significant victory” against separatist violence. He remarked, “This arrest marks a critical step in holding him accountable for his actions and bringing justice to the victims of his violence.”

Cho is not the first separatist leader to face arrest abroad concerning the violence in Cameroon. The Cameroonian government has consistently urged foreign nations to assist in repatriating separatist leaders for trial, following the extradition of Julius Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and others from Nigeria in 2018.
