PIDOMNigeria‘ Trial: Nigerian High Court Schedules Hearing for Isaac Bristol’s Bail Application on September 27.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled a hearing for the bail application of Isaac Bristol, who is accused by Nigerian authorities of operating the whistleblower social media account ‘PIDOMNigeria’. The court hearing will take place on September 27, 2024.

Earlier reports from SaharaReporters indicated that the court had set September 9 for a motion challenging Bristol’s unlawful detention.

Comrade Omoyele Sowore, a prominent human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, announced the upcoming bail hearing on his X account, urging Nigerians to demonstrate solidarity for Bristol.

Sowore stated, “Bristol Isaac, aka @PIDOMNIGERIA, is scheduled to appear at the Federal High Court in Abuja tomorrow for a bail hearing, accused of exposing high crimes. All are welcome! Time: 9 AM #FREEPIDOMNIGERIANOW.”

The Nigerian government, through the Inspector-General of Police, has accused Bristol of being behind the notable whistleblower account. The court also set September 11, 2024, as the date for the hearing of his bail application.

Justice Emeka Nwite presided over the proceedings, having previously ordered that Bristol be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre until September 23, 2024, after his arraignment.

During the proceedings, Bristol entered a plea of not guilty to the nine counts of various cybercrime-related offenses filed against him by the police.

NSIWC Chairman, Ekpo Nta, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing that the implementation aligns with the date when President Bola Tinubu approved the wage increase after the National Assembly passed the bill.

The latest political news in Nigeria now is that, several loyalists of Governor Siminalayi Fubara have emerged as candidates for chairmanship positions under the Action People’s Party (APP) for the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, set for October 5.

These candidates, who were appointed just three months ago as caretaker committee chairmen by the governor, are now making their bids for official positions.

This announcement comes at a time when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of which Governor Fubara is a member, is grappling with an ongoing internal crisis.

The caretaker committee chairmen declaring their candidacies include Chijioke Ihunwo from Obio/Akpor, Ezebunwo Ichemati from Port Harcourt, Brain Gokpa from Eleme, David Omereji from Emohua, John Ngubo-Otamiri from Etche, Promise Reginald from Omuma, and Mathew Dike from Tai.

Notable among the new candidates are Enyiada Cookey-Gam, the former council chairman for Opobo/Nkoro, and Anengi Barasua Claude-Wilcox, the ex-chairman of Bonny Local Government Area. Both individuals previously opposed a controversial six-month tenure extension during the last administration and are now joining the APP.

The upcoming local elections will also see other prominent figures representing the APP. Igwe Access, a former National President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), will contest for Okrika Local Government Area.

Additionally, Isaac Umejuru, the current Commissioner for Urban Development, is set to run for Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, while Ms. Tonye Oniyide-Briggs, a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, will contest for Akuku-Toru. The APP will also field Dr. Harry Agiriye, a Permanent Secretary in the State Civil Service.

As the political landscape shifts, eighteen political parties are reportedly fielding candidates for these elections. This includes a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Mr. Emeka Beke, who was recently confirmed by a court as the legitimate chairman of the party.

Notably, the PDP, which has held a dominant position in local government elections in Rivers State since 1999, has chosen to abstain from the upcoming polls, adding another layer of intrigue to the electoral landscape.

UNICEF Harps On Immunisation Of Children Against Life-Threatening Diseases, Infections

The United Nations Children Funds, UNICEF has emphasised the need for every child in Nigeria to be immunised to protect them against life-threatening diseases and infection.

While disclosing that 2.3 million children were yet to receive vaccines in the country, the Chief UNICEF Field Officer, South-West, Nigeria, Celine Lafoucriere, stated that such children are mostly in marginalised areas and hard-to-reach areas.

Lafoucriere, who stated this in Lagos State, during a two-day media dialogue to enhance routine immunisation and to reduce zero doze children tagged ‘Achieving the health SDGs for over two million children at risk of death in Nigeria,’ maintained that vaccines remain essential to the health of children.

According to her, “We still have a very pressing challenge in Nigeria, where 2.3 million children still have received no vaccines at all. These are called the zero-doze children and are mostly in marginalised areas, and hard-to-reach areas, and vaccines remain essential to their health.

“Vaccines are an essential fundamental right to every child, and they remain fundamental to improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities,” she said.

While emphasising that UNICEF is in collaboration with the government and other partners to address the challenge, she stressed that areas with the highest concentration of zero-dose children were being prioritised.

“To achieve this in Nigeria, UNICEF, together with the government and other partners, has prioritised 100 local government areas across 18 states with the highest concentration of those zero-dose children that need us. They need us right now, and we need you, the media, to join hands to accelerate the rate of immunisation in Nigeria to ensure that by each year we increase the rate of vaccinated children by 50 percent.

With an appeal to the media to assist UNICEF in the sensitisation of Nigerians on the importance of vaccines, she said, “This cannot be done without you; please join hands with us today to ensure that we can leverage your influence.

“Your own influence is very important. You can catalyse actions and help dispel rumours and misinformation about vaccines. By working collectively, we can build a resilient health system that is capable of reaching each and every child, leaving no one behind. No matter where they live, we must ensure that no child in Nigeria suffers from preventable diseases.”

On his part, the Assistant Immunisation Programme Officer, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, LSPHCB, Dr Adeniyi Adebayo, who emphasised the need for every child to be fully immunised, noted that vaccines formed the bedrock of economic development.

According to him, zero-dose children were those who were not immunised from birth, adding that children in that category were prone to diseases and infections.

Adebayo also said that under-immunised children were the ones whose immunisations were not completed, stressing that all vaccines and immunisations in the country were free, urging parents to make the best use of the opportunity to get their children immunised from birth.

“But I’ve been taking giant steps, challenging issues that are not right to me concerning my job, and nothing has happened to me so I came here actually for change of plans. I am going to fight it until I achieve it.

“As I speak with you, I’ve done it with UNICEF, UN women is coming, I will make it so difficult for anyone to work in our country with the kind of way they’ve been working before now.

“Things must have to change, the narrative must change so I came here specifically on this because I was here last year and went home with nothing. Most countries that come her they go home with nothing as far as I am concerned.

“If anybody has achieved anything, they should let me know, So we have to start achieving something. How do we start achieving something? By changing the action plan so that the former action plan they were using which was fetching us nothing would be changed to focus on who we are and what we can benefit from, what can impact our people and change the narratives for them so that the poor will start breathing which is basically the President’s renewed hope agenda,”

A former Nairobi-based radio presenter, Parvin Sigei, accused of setting his wife’s house ablaze, has opened up about their marital woes in a trending video. Reports indicate that Sigei allegedly torched the house over disputes related to jealousy and his wife’s success.

In the video, Sigei detailed his struggles within the marriage, claiming a lack of appreciation from his wife despite his support. “I have persevered for long, over one year.

The work that she holds now (NHIF), I helped her secure it,” he revealed. He emphasized that he financially supported her throughout their marriage without questioning how she used her money.

Sigei claimed to have bought his wife a car and asserted that the house, which reportedly went up in flames, suffered from an electrical fault.

“Even if I leave KSh 200k in the house in the morning, she will still ask for money for fuel in the evening. I have suffered for long,” he lamented.

His emotional breakdown highlighted a long-standing frustration, as he expressed that he could no longer endure the situation.

“So now they are seeing the house, but they don’t know what happened behind the scenes,” he stated.

However, he denied any involvement in the fire, asserting that it was purely coincidental. He mentioned having witnesses who could confirm that he closed the door and left the house intact.

The video has sparked widespread reactions online, with opinions divided on the issue. While some sympathized with Sigei’s frustrations and urged friends to support him, others condemned the alleged arson.

EPL: They’ve Six Good Players – Paul Scholes Names Team To Challenge For Title

Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes has backed Liverpool to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Scholes said the Reds have six good forwards that can help them in their title race this term.

Recall that Liverpool finished in the third position on the Premier League table last season.

“When I look at their forward players, I think they have five or six good players.”

He added, “Seeing Liverpool first-hand, what a squad of players, I see very little weaknesses.

“The only one we thought about was possibly [a weakness] if Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate got injured in the centre-half position.”

Major Shake-up as Tinubu to Sack 11 Ministers, Senior Officials (Full List)

Barring last-minute changes, the Presidency has confirmed that a cabinet reshuffle is imminent, with sources indicating that 11 ministers could be relieved of their positions.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed this development yesterday during his first media briefing with State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Army Discharges Popular Female Soldier, Who Accused Army Senior Officers of Sexual Harassment

Onanuga, joined by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, did not provide a timeline for when President Bola Tinubu would reshuffle his cabinet, but insiders believe the announcement will be made later this week. The reshuffle announcement was delayed after the conclusion of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday.

Onanuga confirmed that the President was considering a reshuffle of his council but declined to specify when the ministers would be moved or dismissed.
“It’s true President Bola Tinubu has plans to reshuffle his cabinet, but I can’t say specifically whether that will be done before the Independence celebration on October 1,” he said.

It is worth noting that President Tinubu appointed his ministers in August last year.

11 Ministers at Risk as Tinubu Prepares for Cabinet Shake-up

However, those familiar with the details of the imminent cabinet change stated that at least 11 ministers have been shortlisted for replacement, with Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila likely to be relieved of his appointment.

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has been identified as a likely replacement for Gbajabiamila. If he declines the offer, the current Principal Secretary to the President, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, may fill the position.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is expected to get a junior minister, potentially Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele.

While decisive action may be taken on the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, insiders suggest the ministry might be scrapped due to significant malfeasance and corruption within intervention programs.

Other ministers likely to be affected by the reshuffle include Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani; Minister of State, Environment and Ecological Management, Ishak Salaco; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Anite; and Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Some ministers may be moved to other ministries, while those found to have performed below expectations will be removed.

The official confirmation of a cabinet shake-up follows months of speculation since Tinubu’s first anniversary in office. Many Nigerians have voiced concerns over the need for better governance amid economic challenges. Several ministers have fallen short of the expectations set by the President’s Renewed Hope agenda. One year after Tinubu inaugurated his 45-member cabinet, many Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.

Although some ministers have shown flashes of brilliance, critical stakeholders agree that a cabinet reshuffle is urgent. They believe the President should replace political allies with more capable, experienced, and committed professionals if he hopes to rescue Nigeria from socio-economic challenges.

President Tinubu has also instructed his ministers to actively promote his administration’s accomplishments. According to Onanuga, Tinubu urged the ministers to “go out there and shout about your and the administration’s successes.” He noted that some ministers were hesitant to speak publicly, adding, “Many Nigerians believe the President isn’t doing much, while the government is making significant strides.”

Tinubu emphasized that his ministers should focus more on communicating these achievements to the public. Ogra corroborated this by stating that the President already had some performance reports from cabinet members, which would help determine who would be affected by the reshuffle.

“We also need to realize that the President’s decision to reshuffle is based on empirical evidence. He mentioned during the ministerial retreat that he would conduct periodic reviews, and the data from these reviews will inform his decisions. I know he’s received a couple of reports, and when he’s ready to make changes, I believe he will,” Ogra said.

Stakeholders have assessed the ministers’ performances and noted that except for Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, Minister of Works Dave Umahi, and Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, most ministers performed below expectations in key areas.

This dismal performance aligns with the 2024 Quarter 1 assessment report by the President’s Special Adviser on Policy Coordination and the Central Delivery Coordination Unit (CDCU), which rated most ministers below average in terms of promises versus deliveries.

Concerned stakeholders specifically criticized the administration’s economic and security teams, concluding that under Tinubu, Nigeria’s economy has been severely weakened. While Tinubu’s policies have impoverished the masses, Nigerians expressed anger over the lavish lifestyle of cabinet members, attributing this to the President’s failure to lead by example and tackle corruption.

Opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), argued that Nigeria’s challenges related to welfare and security are not just about the ministers or a cabinet reshuffle. They claimed, “The President has lost control, and his incompetence is evident in the actions of each cabinet member across various ministries.”

Meanwhile, Arewa Awareness on Good Governance has issued a statement urging the House of Representatives to resist any alleged attempt to reinstate Dr. Betta Edu as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The group’s spokesperson, Malam Germa Ibrahim Musa, emphasized that the lower legislative chamber must uphold its duties as outlined in the 1999 Constitution. The group expressed concern over attempts by vested interests to reinstate Edu, who was suspended last year for alleged misconduct.

They called on Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, to reject any lobbying efforts in favor of Edu’s reinstatement and stressed the importance of accountability and transparency.

The group also urged Abbas to address the conduct of one of his senior legislative aides, Cecilia Ogbeche-Odok, who reportedly supported Edu’s reinstatement.

“Ogbeche’s arrogance and disconnect from the needs of Nigerians is staggering. We will not tolerate her continued presence in the Speaker’s office. Speaker Abbas must take decisive action to restore credibility to his office,” the statement concluded.

NPA, NIMASA To Begin Fee Collection In Naira Rather Than Dollar- Presidency

Nigeria’s Presidency has said the Nigerian Port Authority and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency plan to begin the collection of fees in Naira rather than in United States dollars or other foreign currencies.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga disclosed this on Wednesday during a briefing at the state house.

He noted that the proposal was part of the Economic Stabilisation Bill sent to the National Assembly.

According to him, the bill is part of an effort from the federal government to prioritize the use of local currencies in Nigeria and reduce pressure on the foreign exchange market.

He added that the emphasis of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is to prioritize Nigeria’s National currency.

He stated, “The second one has to do with the operating laws guiding NIMASA and Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), the amendment under that in the economic stabilization bills is that all their fees, charges, levies, fines and other monies accruing to them and payable to those agencies will now be paid in Naira at the applicable exchange rate.”

“Hitherto, those agencies were charging in Dollars but now collect it in Naira. This government wants to put a lot of emphasis on our national currency instead of everything being dollarised in our economy.

  • FCT: Wike Orders Demolition Of Structures In Kugbo Market

FCT: Wike Orders Demolition Of Structures In Kugbo Market

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has directed the Department of Development Control of the FCTA to embark on the demolition of structures obstructing roadways in the Kugbo International Market.

The minister gave the directive on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, during an inspection tour of the Kugbo International Market, which is under construction, as well as the structure proposed to house the new Ministry of Livestock Development in the Central Business District.

Wike, who said that the market was a public-private partnership project between the Abuja Investment Company, AICL—an agency of the FCT Administration—and Mesotho Group Limited, a private business organisation, also said a market of such magnitude was an investment worth encouraging.

He said: “This is an investment that should be encouraged. An international market of this standard. Though there are a lot of problems, there is encroachment, but I have directed the Department of Development Control to immediately demolish any structure that will cause an impediment. As you can see, this is a road corridor, and we will not allow that. The Development Control Director is here and has been ordered to immediately move in with his men to demolish whatever is an obstacle.”

The minister also urged the Mesotho Group to invest more funds to ensure the completion of the project.

He said: “The investor should, as a matter of fact, put in more funds to see to the realisation of the entire market. I have asked him when he thinks the whole thing will be ready and he said we should give him till January.

“However, the first phase has been completed. So, we will therefore see what we can do to open the first phase. And some of these our traders on the road have to come in here and give us the free traffic that we deserve.”

Speaking on the possibility of acquiring shops for less privileged traders and entrepreneurs under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Minister said: “We will do everything we can to support people. For those who have not indicated interest, we will see how, through the empowerment programme of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT, we can put in some funds by taking some stores and giving to our people for them to be involved in one trade or the other.

“So, we will do everything to see that people move into phase one of this market as quickly as possible. We are happy with what we have seen.”

Wike said that the Kugbo International Market will create a lot of employment opportunities for residents and improve the economy of the FCT. He added that the market will also assist in the road decongestion efforts of the FCTA by ensuring that traders leave the roadsides and conduct their businesses in the market.

He stressed that the cost of the shops should not be the reason for traders to sell on the roads.

“You don’t expect an investor to open up and you move in for free. Nobody does that and it should not be encouraged. And that is not why I will allow people to trade on the road. The issue before was that there was no market. Now market has been provided and you are saying it’s the cost. Anyway, we will also not allow the investor to take advantage of that and people cannot afford it. No.

“The Abuja Investment Company will sit down with the investor and see what agreement can be reached. Even if it means putting our own stake to see that people get allocation here,” Wike stated.

    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates

    Economic Policies:
Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. These policies can stabilize or destabilize the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand:
The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability:
Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions:
Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. For instance, a significant drop in oil prices negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy:
    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

The latest news in Nigeria now is that the Federal Government has distanced itself from the ongoing controversy between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery concerning petrol pricing.

However, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, clarified the government’s stance during a briefing in Abuja. Onanuga emphasized that the petroleum market has been deregulated, allowing both Dangote Refinery and NNPCL to set their prices as private entities.

“The PMS price regime has been deregulated. Dangote is a private company. NNPCL, you should not forget, is a limited liability company,” Onanuga explained. “Whatever controversy both of them are having is their own problem.

The dispute arose when NNPCL stated that Dangote Refinery sold petrol to them at ₦898 per litre. Dangote Refinery, however, refuted this claim, stating that the price quoted by NNPCL was misleading and that the actual cost was lower than the price of imported petrol.

Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Refinery, recently added that the removal of fuel subsidies is entirely the responsibility of the government, not his company.

Onanuga reiterated the government’s position, stating that both parties should resolve their issues independently, without government interference, and that market forces should dictate pricing.

“If NNPC’s fuel is too expensive, private marketers are free to import fuel and sell at a price they deem reasonable and profitable,” Onanuga concluded.

  • Bobrisky: Why I Won’t Honour EFCC’s Invitation – VeryDarkMan Speaks (Video)

Martins Vincent Otse, the Nigerian activist and social media personality, who is populalry known as VeryDarkMan, has explained why he won’t honour an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, bordering on an allegation of corruption levelled against officials of the agency.

VeryDarkMan had in a video played an audio recording purportedly belonging to social media personality, Bobrisky wherein the latter said he was asked to pay N15 million to have a money laundering charge against him dropped.

Reacting, the EFCC, in a letter, invited both VeryDarkMan and Bobrisky to its Lagos office to “assist investigators unearth the alleged bribery.”

But Otse, on Wednesday, said he won’t be honouring the invite to Lagos because he does not reside there and was not sure of his fate if he goes. He, instead, asked the anti-graft agency to invite them to their office in Abuja.

In the video Vanguard saw on X, formerly Twitter, he further accused the EFCC of not ensuring that Bobrisky was actually committed to prison and remained there.

He said, “Before you (EFCC) invite someone like me, do a deep investigation on your officers first. When you get the result from your officers who handled Bobrisky’s file then you can invite me.

“You are telling me to come to Lagos and the headquarters of EFCC is in Abuja, it makes no sense. You should, instead, invite Bobrisky to Abuja and do your investigation.

Lastly, why I would not go to Lagos is that I don’t have N15 million to pay for anything. I don’t have any godfather anywhere and I don’t want to be framed. I don’t trust you and I won’t go (to Lagos).”

    He concluded.

Vanguard reports that Bobrisky denied saying that he paid N15 million to have the money laundering charge dropped and described the audio as fake.

  • Rivers: APC Chieftain Tackles Tony Okocha, Calls For NBA’s Intervention

Rivers: APC Chieftain Tackles Tony Okocha, Calls For NBA’s Intervention

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is once again embroiled in controversy, with former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, tackling Tony Okocha, a self-proclaimed Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party.

Eze, a prominent APC chieftain, described Okocha as a “jobber” and a “prying agent” acting at the behest of former Rivers governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

He accused Okocha of meddling in the party’s affairs while masquerading as a legitimate leader, despite a court ruling recognising Chief Emeka Beke as the rightful chairman.

Eze’s strong condemnation stems from Okocha’s recent verbal attacks on the judiciary and the Rivers State branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

Okocha had lashed out after the NBA criticised his actions, highlighting the court’s decision against his appointment as caretaker chairman.

Eze called on the NBA to take decisive action against Okocha, describing him as a threat to societal morality due to his “uncultured manners” and “abrasive display of media rudeness.”

He also urged media outlets to stop recognising Okocha as an APC leader.

He further slammed Okocha’s criticisms of APC 2023 governorship candidate, Pastor Tonye Cole, of being a mere pawn of Wike and Amaechi.

Eze emphasised Cole’s independent political stature and dismissed Okocha’s pronouncements as baseless.

The APC chieftain also criticised the Forum of APC State Chairmen for supporting Okocha’s claims and endorsing Ganduje’s actions in defying the court’s ruling.

He described them as “marauders” acting in collusion with Wike.

Eze reiterated that Beke remains the legitimate leader of the Rivers APC and that no amount of manipulation or legal challenges will change this.

He also highlighted Okocha’s lack of membership in the party, stating that he is a “mole” employed by Wike to create chaos within the APC.

This latest development further deepens the existing conflict within the Rivers APC, leaving the future of the party in the state uncertain.

NBA’s response to Eze’s call for intervention and the next steps taken by the party’s leadership will be crucial in determining the outcome of this ongoing power struggle.
