Hunger Protest Would’ve Culminated In Greater Unrest – Olumba Obu

The spiritual leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu, has revealed that the nationwide hunger protest was intended to escalate into more serious civil unrest.

In an address to his adherents, which was relayed over a cable TV network, the spiritual leader cautioned Nigerians to exercise restraint and patience.

He urged them to be law-abiding and to respect established authorities, as this is the will of God. He emphasized that resorting to violence and destruction would not lead to meaningful change.

“The agitation by Nigerians through the nationwide hunger protest could have resulted in severe civil unrest in the country.

“But the Almighty Father has intervened by taking full control. I hereby call on Nigerians to live in peace with one another, to be law-abiding, and to respect and honor all constituted authorities. In accordance with Romans 13:1-2, every soul must be subject to higher powers, for there is no power except that of God.”

He stressed that Nigerians should focus on praying for the country and its leaders to be guided by the divine spirit.

The spiritual leader also urged Nigerian leaders to be sensitive to the plight of the people by listening to their concerns and providing effective leadership.

“Leaders should show empathy and sensitivity to the struggles of their subjects. They should act with love and understanding in every situation, relying on God for guidance in their responsibilities.”

BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY BOLA AHMED TINUBU, PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED

FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE NATIONWIDE PROTEST

    DATE: SUNDAY 4″ AUGUST 2024

    My fellow Nigerians,

    1. I speak to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of responsibility, aware of the turmoil and violent protests unleashed in some of our states.

    2. Notably among the protesters were young Nigerians who desired a better and more progressive country where their dreams, hopes, and personal aspirations would be fulfilled.

    3. I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country. The destruction of properties sets us back as a nation, as scarce resources will be again used to restore them.

    4. I commiserate with the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence and destruction.

    5. As President of this country, I must ensure public order. In line with my constitutional oath to protect the lives and property of every citizen, our government will not stand idly by and allow a few with a clear political agenda to tear this nation apart.

    6. Under the circumstances, I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest

opportunity, Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all- regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides, to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation. To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation to threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you. There is no place for ethnic bigotry or such threats in the Nigeria we seek to build.

    7. Our democracy progresses when the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected. Our law enforcement agencies should continue to ensure the full protection of lives and properties of innocent citizens in a responsible manner.

    8. My vision for our country is one of a just and prosperous nation where each person may enjoy the peace, freedom, and meaningful livelihood that only democratic good governance can provide one that is open, transparent and accountable to the Nigerian people.

    9. For decades, our economy has remained anaemic and taken a dip because of many misalignments that have stunted our growth. Just over a year ago, our dear country, Nigeria, reached a point where we couldn’t afford to continue the use of temporary solutions to solve long-term problems for the sake of now and our unborn generations. I therefore took the painful yet necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems which had constituted a noose around the economic jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress.

    10. These actions blocked the greed and the profits that smugglers and rent-seekers made. They also blocked the undue subsidies we had extended to our neighbouring countries to the detriment of our people, rendering our economy prostrate. These decisions I made were necessary if we must reverse the decades of economic mismanagement that didn’t serve us well. Yes, I agree, the buck stops on my table. But I can assure you that I am focused fully on delivering the governance to the people good governance for that matter.

    11. In the past 14 months, our government has made significant strides in rebuilding the foundation of our economy to carry us into a future of plenty and abundance. On the fiscal side, aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over 9.1 trillion Naira in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023 due to our efforts at blocking leakages, introducing automation, and mobilising funding creatively without additional burden on the people. Productivity is gradually increasing in the non-oil sector, reaching new levels and taking advantage of the opportunities in the current economic ambience.

    12. My dear brothers and sisters, we have come this far. Coming from a place where our country spent 97% of all our revenue on debt service; we have been able to reduce that to 68% in the last 13 months. We have also cleared legitimate outstanding foreign exchange obligations of about $5billion without any adverse impact on our programmes.

    13. This has given us more financial freedom and the room to spend more money on you, our citizens, to fund essential social services like education and healthcare. It has also led to our State, and Local Governments receiving the highest allocations ever in our country’s history from the Federation Account.

    14. We have also embarked on major infrastructure projects across the country. We are working to complete inherited projects critical to our economic prosperity, including roads, bridges, railways, power,

and oil and gas developments. Notably, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway projects will open up 16 connecting states, creating thousands of jobs and boosting economic output through trade, tourism and cultural integration

    15. Our once-declining oil and gas industry is experiencing a resurgence on the back of the reforms I announced in May 2024 to address the gaps in the Petroleum Industry Act. Last month, we increased our oil production to 1.61million barrels per day, and our gas assets are receiving the attention they deserve. Investors are coming back, and we have already seen two Foreign Direct Investments signed of over half a billion dollars since then.

    16. Fellow Nigerians, we are a country blessed with both oil and gas resources, but we met a country that had been dependent solely on oil-based petrol, neglecting its gas resources to power the economy. We were also using our hard-earned foreign exchange to pay for, and subsidise its use. To address this, we immediately launched our Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (CNG) to power our transportation economy and bring costs down. This will save over two trillion Naira a month, being used to import PMS and AGD and free up our resources for more investment in healthcare and. education.

    17. To this end, we will be distributing a million kits of extremely low or no cost to commercial vehicles that transport people and goods and who currently consume 80% of the imported PMS and AGO.

    18. We have started the distribution of conversion kits and setting up of conversion centres across the country in conjunction with the private sector. We believe that this CNG initiative will reduce transportation costs by approximately 60 per cent and help to curb inflation.

    19. Our administration has shown its commitment to the youth by setting up the student loan scheme. To date, 45.6billion Naira has

already been processed for payment to students and their respective institutions

    20. I encourage more of our vibrant youth population to take advantage of this opportunity. We established the Consumer Credit Corporation with over N200billion to help Nigerians to acquire essential products without the need for immediate cash payments, making life easier for millions of households. This will consequently reduce corruption and eliminate cash and opaque transactions. This week, I ordered the release of an additional N50billion Naira each for NELFUND the student loan, and Credit Corporation from the proceeds of crime recovered by the EFCC

    21. Additionally, we have secured $620million under the Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDICE) a programme to empower our young people, creating millions of IT and technical jobs that will make them globally competitive. These programmes include the 3Million Technical Talents scheme. Unfortunately, one of the digital centres was vandalised during the protests in Kano. What a shame!

    22. In addition, we have introduced the Skill-Up Artisans Programme (SUPA); the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA); and the National Youth Talent Export Programme (NATEP).

    23. Also, more than N570 billion has been released to the 36 states to expand livelihood support to their citizens, while 600,000 nano- businesses have benefitted from our nano-grants. An additional 400,000 more nano-businesses are expected to benefit.

    24. Furthermore, 75,000 beneficiaries have been processed to receive our N1million Micro and Small Business single-digit interest loans, starting this month. We have also built 10 MSME hubs within the past year, created 240,000 jobs through them and 5 more hubs are in progress which will be ready by October this year.

  • President Tinubu Is Monitoring Situation Of #EndBadGovernance Protests, Says Minister

     Bola Tinubu

Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, has stated that President Bola Tinubu is monitoring the #EndBadGovernance protests across the country.

SaharaReporters, had reported that the nationwide demonstrations kicked off in major cities across Nigeria on Thursday, marking the beginning of a 10-day protest scheduled for August.

The protests aim to condemn the hardship and challenges exacerbated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with citizens taking to the streets to express their discontent.

Thousands of Nigerians took to the streets for three days, joining a nationwide protest that swept across major cities and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Protesters, armed with placards and banners, decried the country’s worsening conditions, including economic hardship, soaring inflation, poor governance, and rampant insecurity.

The demonstrations were marred by reports of police brutality, with several journalists and media professionals facing arrest, physical assault, harassment, and obstruction while attempting to cover the protests.

There have been calls for President Tinubu to address the nation after the demonstrations entered the third day petering out though the president is yet to do that.

However, Bagudu said the Nigerian leader was well aware of the situation.

“Mr President has been monitoring the situation, as he ought to. Very responsibly, and alert,” the minister said on Saturday during Channels Television’s special programme The August Protest — #EndBadGovernance.

“I am a minister. I also have responsibilities. I have also been monitoring this thing. I have been noting this thing so that I can make inputs.”

“We have been monitoring and listening carefully to hear what is being said and what noting them,” Bagudu said.

  • Vladimir Okhotnikov About Digital Assets Fraud

The Okhotnikov Analytical Center has published a review on the virtual asset protection and NFT possibilities in the modern world of digital data.

The head of the center, Vladimir Okhotnikov, a well-known analyst, publicist, and expert on blockchain and cryptocurrencies, notes that the development of digital technologies requires a new approach to protecting intellectual property and personal data from unauthorized access and fraud. In this regard, Okhotnikov mentions the company Amazon, which acts unlawfully by deleting books and other content from users’ devices without their knowledge and consent.

Vladimir Okhotnikov: “This is a violation of consumer rights and demonstrates the inability of the legislation to effectively respond to such cases. Users should not lose access to platforms and their content due to the actions of companies.”

An example is BitTorrent, which is similar in concept to blockchain. The head of the center notes transparency and greater reliability for users of decentralized services, including less control from administrative authorities and the SEC. Okhotnikov points out obvious gaps in the regulation of the digital assets market in the current legislation.

Vladimir Okhotnikov objectively assessed the possibilities and disadvantages of NFTs. The analyst says that despite the immaturity of the market, non-fungible tokens can be placed on the same level as traditional collectibles because they have similar characteristics: the value of many digital collectibles does not depend on their functionality, and their ownership is not necessarily associated with the possession of a physical object.

Speaking of the protection of copyright and stabilization of the NFT market, solutions are proposed in the development of technologies and infrastructure that will overcome the speculative nature of the NFT market and make it more stable. In addition, the importance of being able to develop the cultural and historical significance of NFTs in the future is also emphasized.

The head of the center sums up the results and suggests looking at NFTs differently. Read more about what will make loot boxes and skins available only to you and bypass Steam in the articlе.

The Okhotnikov Center was created as an accessible engineering tool for implementing blockchain into real life. The company creates platforms and services based on decentralized technology. The center’s experts develop and implement complex business plans in the field of cryptocurrencies. The company’s mission is to help businesses successfully integrate into the decentralized finance (DeFi) system.

He expressed sorrow over Adeniji-Adele’s passing, noting that his commitment, ingenuity, and leadership would be greatly missed.

He added that Prince Adeniji-Adele would be remembered for his advocacy for the rights of Lagos State natives, who have been deprived of their rights as landowners and indigenes since the return of democracy in 1999.

“With heavy hearts, I announce the tragic loss of our President, Prince Adelani Gbogboade Adeniji-Adele.

“We lost him early this morning to the cold hands of death.

“His dedication, resourcefulness, and leadership will be sorely missed. Details will be made available later by the royal family.

“Prince Adeniji-Adele will be remembered for his fight for the rights of Lagos State natives, who have been deprived of their rights as landowners and indigenes of Lagos State since the return of democracy in 1999,” Tokosi said.

Meanwhile, Maj-Gen Tajudeen Olanrewaju, Alternate BOT Chairman and former Minister of Communications, mourned the loss of De Renaissance Patriots’ President, stating that Adeniji-Adele’s departure is a significant loss for Lagos State.

“His death will leave a significant void in the quest for indigenous participation in the governance of the state. He was at the forefront, leading the way as the president of De Renaissance Patriots Foundation.

In his role as our president, he was responsible, resolute, and committed, serving with energy, integrity, and dedication to our cultural organization’s goals,” Olanrewaju stated.

“We pray for the repose of his soul. Rest in peace, our prince and leader,” he prayed.

Young Boy Killed by Nigeria Police Force in Kubwa Amid #EndBadGovernance Protests.

A young boy was shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, in Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, on Saturday, as the #EndBadGovernance protests entered its third day.

The shooting occurred near Zenith Bank in Kubwa, according to a report by Daily Post.

People who attended the shooting said the boy was not demonstrating and happened to pass near them when he was hit. One witness has described the boy as having been shot at point-blank range, despite not being involved in the demonstrations.

“This boy was not part of the protesters. He was just coming by when the police, positioned elsewhere, fired at us,” the witness said.

Activist and lawyer, Barr. Deji Adeyanju, condemned the shooting as an act of “unprovoked murder.” Adeyanju criticized Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and his officers for their actions, stating, “IGP Kayode Egbetokun and his bloodthirsty men should be held accountable for the murder of this innocent young boy, who was simply observing the protest.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage among protesters and citizens, calling for justice and accountability for the actions of the police.

Go and Kill Bandits, Not Protesters, Ajaero Tells Police

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, yesterday, charged the police to stop killing peaceful protesters but rather eliminate bandits.

He further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to talk to some critical issues in the country and address the protesters.

He says, “With the unconfirmed reports putting the casualty at over 40 within two days of managing the EndHunger protest across the country, we have sufficient reasons, backed by reports and video clips, to question their professionalism in our security personnel. This represents nothing but a massacre of citizens.”.

He added, “Had the security personnel turned the same brutal precision against bandits or other criminals, our country would have been an eldorado. As the lead agency in internal security management, the police bear the burden of this massacre.

According to Ajaero, the case of the Kaduna police command, under Commissioner of Police Audu Ali Dabigi, was even worse. He narrated how a fleeing protester, caught on camera, was appealing to the police not to shoot, when his voice was drowned by gunfire, which killed the protester and injured many others.

In contrast to this, Ajaero wrote in commendation of the Edo State Police Command, led by COMPOL Funsho Adegboroye, who he noted had shown quite a different approach in crowd control. Adegboroye related with protesters and calmed them.

Ajaero thus insisted, “While it is understandable that the socio-cultural contexts are different between the states, an undisputed fact common to all is that human life is sacred and should never be taken.”

Being Igbo Becoming Tough In Nigeria – Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Ejimakor

The lead counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Aloy Ejimakor, has said it’s becoming tougher being Igbo in Nigeria.

Ejimakor was reacting to the IgboMustGo threat against the people of the South-East.

DAILY POST reported that there are calls on social media trending under the hashtag #IgboMustGo on X, demanding the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states.

An X handle, which is known for its anti-Igbo comments and posts, urged Igbos residing in Lagos State to vacate their land.

“Indeed, democracy dies without a guarantee of civil liberties,” it added.

It however, noted with “concerns the reported death of persons – including citizens and security forces, injuries to many persons, looting of business assets, theft of equipment and other resources in public utilities – including telecommunication infrastructure, food processing companies as well as instances of destruction and arson that have resulted from the first day of protests.”

“Therefore, we call on all actors – state and non-state – to stop the hostilities and the outrage. In their stead, APRA advocates continuous dialogue and sincere conversations to ensure quick and concrete resolutions of the issues.

“We call on the government of Nigeria, including subnational entities, to work with all stakeholders and restore normalcy to the nation. Nigeria is central to Africa’s vision for the progress and development of the continent.

“APRA shares in the grief of families that have lost their members in the ongoing crisis and pray for the repose of the souls of the departed.

“We wish those recuperating from injuries a speedy and complete recovery and hope that institutions and persons that have lost properties will be supported to recover quickly and return to business to support the government’s effort to reflate the Nigerian economy,” it added.

President Tinubu’s House Set on Fire in Côte d’Ivoire? Truth Emerges

Fact Check: Viral Claims of President Tinubu’s House Set on Fire in Côte d’Ivoire.

A viral video circulating on social media platform X has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s house in Côte d’Ivoire has been set on fire by Ivorian youths. In the video, onlookers can be heard shouting that Tinubu’s house has been ablaze.

However, a thorough fact check conducted by Ejes Gist News reveals that this claim is false. President Bola Tinubu does not own a house in Côte d’Ivoire. The video appears to be a fabrication, aiming to incite unrest amid ongoing protests in Nigeria.

Here is the video showing President Tinubu’s house being set on fire in Côte d’Ivoire.

It’s important to recall the context in which these protests are occurring. Since Bola Tinubu assumed power as President of Nigeria, many citizens have taken to the streets to protest against what they perceive as bad governance. Under his administration, the economic situation has worsened significantly.

Inflation has soared, making basic necessities unaffordable for many Nigerians. The price of fuel has skyrocketed from N200 to N900 within a year, attributed to policies seen as detrimental and allegations of reckless spending on the part of the President, the Vice President, and their associates.

Despite these challenges, the claim that President Tinubu’s house in Côte d’Ivoire has been set on fire is unequivocally false. Misinformation during such critical times can exacerbate tensions and should be addressed with accurate reporting and verified facts.

Protest: 6 Things President Tinubu Must Do Now – Ex-Minister

Former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jr, has outlined six urgent steps for President Bola Tinubu amid widespread hunger protests across the nation.

Nweke emphasized the necessity for direct engagement with citizens suffering from economic hardships. He stressed that the President must address the populace and protesters directly rather than through intermediaries. Additionally, Nweke urged President Tinubu to launch an immediate investigation into the killing of unarmed protesters by security forces.

Nweke, who previously ran for governorship under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu, advised the President to reduce the cost of governance and intensify efforts against corruption. He also highlighted the need for federal intervention to ensure state governors fulfill their responsibilities.

On his X handle, Nweke stated, “Speak with Nigerians. He must listen to and address Nigerians directly, not through tone-deaf surrogates.”

“Demand an immediate investigation into the reported killings across the country and hold the security services accountable for the life of every Nigerian that has been cut short.”

“Take immediate and definite steps that show a commitment to reducing the size and cost of governance, reviewing the salaries of public officials downwards, and going beyond lip service to combat corruption and profligacy in the government.”

Nweke further stressed the importance of holding state governments accountable. He noted that the Federal Accounts Allocations increased by 179% in the first five months of 2024 due to subsidy removal, with some states receiving almost 100% more funds. He called on state governments to fulfill their responsibilities and for a structured partnership with citizens to ensure accountability.

He also pointed out that, following a ruling deeming it unconstitutional for state governors to control local government funds, the federal government should establish an accountability mechanism to ensure local governments provide essential services.

Finally, Nweke urged the President to foster constructive engagement, employing eminent citizens to facilitate national conversations between the government and the populace to reach a consensus on the way forward.

Former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jr, advised President Bola Tinubu on six urgent steps:

    1. Direct Engagement: Address and listen to citizens and protesters directly, not through intermediaries.
    2. Investigation of Killings: Order an immediate investigation into the killing of peaceful and unarmed protesters by security forces.
    3. Reduce Governance Costs: Take immediate steps to reduce the size and cost of governance, including reviewing public officials’ salaries downwards, and intensify efforts against corruption.
    4. Hold State Governments Accountable: Call on state governments to fulfill their responsibilities, especially given the increase in Federal Accounts Allocations due to subsidy removal.
    5. Monitor Local Governments: Create an accountability and monitoring mechanism to ensure local governments provide critical services, following the ruling against state governors controlling local government funds.
    6. Foster National Dialogue: Urge constructive engagement and facilitate national conversations between the government and citizens, using eminent citizens to help reach a consensus on the nation’s way forward

Olympics 2024 Football: It Hurts – Mascherano Explains Why Argentina Loss To France

Argentina Under-23 football coach, Javier Mascherano has suggested that his team was defeated against France at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics games because his players failed to score.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the match as Thierry Henry’s team defeated Argentina 1-0 on Friday.

France will now face Egypt in the semi-final stage on Monday.

Speaking to the media after the game,
Mascherano said as quoted by Mundo Albiceleste: “The match was practically all us. The only thing we missed was a goal.

“Football has these things. Sometimes you do everything you can to win it and we did well not to lose it, but we came up empty-handed.

“It’s difficult to understand a game like today’s, where we had little or nothing to show for it and we had a few chances to tie it.

“It hurts a lot because we had the illusion that this team could go far.”
