    Transparent and Inclusive Enrollment Process

NDDC Youth Internship Scheme Online Registration Portal

He said that the enrollment into the program would be very transparent. Therefore, all applications are to be made through the online portal, https://nyis.nddc.gov.ng/. No middlemen would be required to apply for any candidate. Furthermore, this will ensure an absolutely fair process of selection.

Aside from this, an online system gives equal opportunities to all eligible and qualified candidates who can then apply.

This incident has been described as the height of growing tensions and unrest in the region. As a result of the protests, Governor Uba Sani has declared a curfew in the metropolis of Kaduna and Zaria, geared at calming the excesses of demonstrators and the restoration of order.

The curfew is to forestall further clashes between protesters and security operatives, with such factors considered to be critical towards ensuring safety of lives and property.

The security operatives monitor the demonstrations as the situation unfolds with a view to enforcing measures that would secure peace in Kaduna State.

Their actions made people raise eyebrows over possible foreign influence, considering that Russia is accused of having had a hand in political upsets in countries of West Africa like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The Russian Embassy, however, explained that these were individual actions of private citizens, thus not reflecting any kind of official policy or position of the Russian government.

As always, we would like to emphasize that Russia does not interfere in the domestic affairs of foreign states, including Nigeria. These intentions of some protesters to wave Russian flags are personal choices of these individuals; and they in no way do reflect any official position or policy of the Russian Government in the issue,” the embassy stated on Monday, August 5.

The Chief of Defence, Nigeria, General Chris Musa, has branded their act as treasonable, adding that the law would soon catch up with them. The Russian Embassy respect and acknowledge democracy in Nigeria, with peaceful demonstrations, but rejects all sorts of disorders and violent actions that may result from such meetings.

    Background of the Protests

The protests, which began on Thursday, August 1, saw Nigerians troop into the streets to demand that government do something about the raving hunger and economic hardship. They demanded the fuel subsidy removal be reversed, the proscribed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, be freed, and also that the 1999 constitution be suspended.

The presidency had termed their demand as an invitation to anarchy, cautioning against moves that would truncate 25 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria. The protesters refused to back down amidst the challenge as many of them vowed to continue the demonstration until their demands were met.

    Security Response and Curfews

Violence has been reported in at least some of the states, including looting. The police reacted by firing on some of the protesters. At least 17 people had been killed on the first day of protest. Several governors responded by declaring curfews in their respective states to curb the situation.

While the investigations go on, one focuses on sorting out the demands of the protesting people while ensuring peace and order are maintained throughout the country.

Evicted Big Brother Naija Season 9 housemate, Damilola has opened up on why she was evicted alongside her partner, Toyosi.

Her reaction comes after eight of ten pairs voted for the Tami duo to be evicted from the Big Brother House on Sunday.

The duo were among the bottom four, alongside Streeze, Chekas and The Radicals.

However, The Radicals were saved by the custodian’s NdiNne pair, who had picked the “save only” box.

The other housemates who were not up for eviction decided on which nominees to send home and the Tami pair was voted out.

Speaking shortly after their eviction, Dami claimed that the other housemates conspired to send them home because they weren’t on good terms with them.

“I wasn’t surprised at the results tonight, because Tami has had issues with a lot of the housemates,” she told Ebuka.

Meanwhile, Streeze won the custodian challenge on Sunday night.

Consequently, they will be immune from this week’s eviction.

Court Stops Sale of Nigeria Air to Ethiopian Airlines

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday declared the sale of Nigeria Air Ltd to Ethiopian Airlines null and void. Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa delivered the judgment, halting the proposed establishment of a national carrier, Nigeria Air, by the Federal Government.

The judge made the order while granting the reliefs sought by the plaintiffs, the Registered Trustees of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, and five other stakeholders in the aviation industry.

Justice Lewis-Allagoa held that all the reliefs sought are granted, except for the relief asking for ₦2 billion as damages for the injury suffered by the plaintiffs due to their wrongful exclusion and the wrongful action; unlawful bidding and selection processes for the Nigeria Air project.

Listed as the 1st to 6th plaintiffs in the suit are the Registered Trustees of the Airline Operators, Azman Air Services Limited, Air Peace Limited, Max Air Limited, United Nigeria Airlines Company Limited, and Topbrass Aviation Limited.

The six plaintiffs had filed the suit against the first to fourth defendants: Nigeria Air Limited, Ethiopian Airlines, Senator Hadi Sirika (former Minister of Aviation, Federal Ministry of Aviation), and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

In the suit, the plaintiffs had asked the court to set aside the entire bidding and selection processes for the “Nigeria Air” project, as well as the approval, grant, or selection of Ethiopian Airlines by the former Minister Hadi Sirika and former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

Protest: ‘Tinubu’s Speech Is Disconnected From Reality, Needs To Stop Dwelling On The Past’ – Peter Obi

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has reacted to Sunday’s speech by President Bola Tinubu addressing the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.

In a statement on Monday, Obi explained that he intentionally delayed his reaction to avoid being labelled as always swaying public opinion against the Tinubu administration. While he appreciated the President for finally addressing Nigerians, albeit belatedly, Obi noted that the speech fell short of expectations and failed to address the pressing issues facing the nation.

Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, stated that President Tinubu’s speech was disconnected from the harsh economic realities that Nigerians are facing and overly focused on the past instead of addressing the present and future concerns of the citizens.

Obi emphasized that while the President cannot solve all of Nigeria’s problems at once, he is expected to show visible commitment towards addressing the mismanagement of public resources, reducing the high cost of governance, and tackling issues such as insecurity, corruption, electricity, and agriculture, which would, in turn, ignite the hope of the people.

His statement, titled “My Response to the President’s Address,” reads: “Having led the call for the President to address the nation and respond to the demands of the people, and having listened to the belated speech, I needed to delay my response to see if my understanding of the address was aligned with others. I hesitated to respond immediately, as I felt it could have been perceived as another attempt by Peter Obi to sway public opinion, especially since I was initially accused of sponsoring the protest.

“However, I must begin by thanking the President for finally addressing the people, albeit belatedly, which might have prevented the unnecessary loss of innocent lives, including those of our security agents.

“While I had hoped that, in consoling the families of those who lost their loved ones in the protest, he would also show some empathy towards those who were injured, arrested, and detained due to the overzealous and unprofessional conduct of some security operatives, this was unfortunately not the case. It is the responsibility of the government to identify criminal elements attempting to disrupt the protest through looting and other unlawful behaviours and to protect those genuinely exercising their democratic rights.

“Nigeria must embrace all tenets of democracy, including the right to protest, without selective adherence. I also appreciate his condemnation of the ethnic bigotry being propagated by some individuals against other ethnic groups.

“However, I had hoped for more decisive action, such as the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible, to demonstrate that such intolerance will not be tolerated in today’s Nigeria.

“The President’s address regrettably appeared disconnected from the harsh realities faced by the people and failed to address critical issues that initially triggered the protest.

It either reflects a lack of awareness among his advisers regarding the scale of anger, hunger, and hardship in the country, or a deliberate choice to disregard it. At this point, I strongly advise the President to distance himself from sycophants and surround himself with individuals who will present the unvarnished truth.

“While the President’s speech focused on the past, the people are concerned with the present and the future. He should begin by addressing pressing issues such as the exorbitant cost of governance, measures to tackle corruption, the high cost of living, and directing resources effectively towards critical areas like health, education, and poverty alleviation. I respectfully reiterate that the President should declare a war on insecurity, the economy, poverty, unemployment, and the power sector.

“Persistent issues of corruption and mismanagement of public funds must be addressed decisively.

As is done in other nations during such times, regular briefings, whether quarterly or biannually, from the President are essential to clearly communicate the visible and verifiable measures being taken to revive the nation from its current state of hopelessness, restore hope, and rebuild trust in our country. I also humbly request that the President reduce the repetition of how dire the situation is; every Nigerian is already aware of the extent of the problems. Mr President, you and your team were elected not just to witness the protests but to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“Nigerians do not expect the President to solve the nation’s problems overnight, but we do expect a concerted effort to address the mismanagement of public resources, reduce the high cost of governance, and tackle issues like insecurity, corruption, electricity, agriculture, and productivity to set the country on a path to recovery and growth. By doing so, the President can restore hope and rekindle the people’s faith in our dear country Nigeria.

CBN Raises Import Duty Rate to ₦1,618.73/USD Amidst Naira Depreciation

The Central Bank of Nigeria has reviewed the cargo clearance exchange rate at both the nation’s seaports and airports to ₦1,618.73 per USD from ₦1,600.32, the highest since March 2024.

It was coming in tandem with a 6.43 per cent depreciation of the naira in July, hence it has made the adjustment most worrying, especially to importers, considering its impact on raising import costs and fueling inflation.

Dollar To Naira 5th August 2024: See Black Market Aboki FX Rate

Naija News reported that the CBN’s efforts to stabilize the naira through many sales of foreign exchange continued to show some challenges in the market. The exchange rate appreciated by ₦18 to close at ₦1,618.73 as against ₦1,600.32 recorded in the previous session.

Reacting to the growing pressure on the naira, the CBN sold FX to authorized dealers and BDC operators in several intervention exercises in July. However, clearing agents say the cost of clearing containers at the ports has increased to an unbearable level due to the hike in the exchange rate, a development, according to Oladimeji Majekodunmi, that has almost eclipsed the gains of the flexible exchange rate window introduced by the CBN.

He said, “The moment CBN increases, Customs don’t have a choice than to adjust the new duty in their system. Now to clear a 40ft container of food items, it costs nothing less than ₦20 million and above. This was far below the amount we used to clear the same consignment before.” He said cargo throughput into the country has drastically dropped to about 30%, leaving the ports empty and dry.

He wanted the federal government to have a special exchange rate for the calculation of import duties, according to the National President of the National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents, Lucky Amiwero. He said it would foster economic development and positively affect the larger Nigerian populace with a consistent, very manageable exchange rate for import duties.

Amiwero felt a serious misgiving over the existing dependence on floating exchange rates for the purposes of calculating customs duty. He said that is one of the major factors jacking up prices of all goods, and not just foodstuffs, selling in all markets in Nigeria.

“We want to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the harrowing experiences of Nigerians, more so with the astronomical rise in the prices of items due to the floating exchange rate, which was foisted on import duty computations, many of them. This is making importation come to a near standstill, stifling transportation and throwing such staples as grains and tubers into an abominable scarcity, particularly for those who are penniless and can’t buffer their existence from financial shock.”

Amiwero canvassed programmes that would eliminate the vagaries and ambiguities associated with the current exchange rate regime. He called for a stricter framework that would help to align the domestic trading environment for importers.

The MPC of the CBN meets on February 26, where most of these issues are expected to be resolved.

Understanding the Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.
