Live Updates: Nigerians Storm Streets In Massive Nationwide Hunger Protest (Day 5).

The nationwide protest against bad governance and hunger continued today across the country.

Ejes Gist News reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on Sunday morning addressed Nigerians, urging them to suspend their strike, while reeling out the achievements of his administration.

This, however, did not stop protesters from storming the streets in Plateau, Lagos, and other states across the country.

A leader of the Bauchi North zone’s #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, Isah Zaki, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent nationwide address.

Zaki stated that the decision to potentially relax the protests in Bauchi North is due to disruptions caused by hoodlums, which have harmed local businesses.

#EndBadGovernance protesters have started converging at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota in Lagos.

On Monday morning in Katsina, some protesters waived Russian flags, chatting in Hausa, “Hunger is killing us.”

According to DailyTrust, Policemen have started trailing them, firing teargas to disperse them.

Security operatives, on Monday, dispersed protesters in the Karu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Ejes Gist News gathered that the protesters marching against bad governance in the country were just assembling when security agents went after them and arrested three.

One of the protesters who spoke with Punch, Yahaya Abdullahi, said the security agents fired teargas at them.

The protest against bad governance in Nigeria’s capital city, scheduled from August 1 to August 10, has significantly waned in momentum as the exercise enters its third day.

Ejes Gist News understands that as a strategy to manage the protest, the authorities of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) secured a court order that confined the demonstrators to the MKO Abiola National Stadium.

Holding Governors Accountable: The Hidden Crisis Behind Nigeria’s ‘Days of Rage

Holding State Governors Accountable: The Overlooked Crisis Behind Nigeria’s “Days of Rage”

By Divramredje Lawrence Efeturi (Delta State)

The ongoing “Days of Rage” protests across Nigeria, driven by widespread hunger and hardship, underscore the deep-seated socio-economic issues facing the nation. While these protests are a legitimate response to the desperate living conditions many Nigerians face, the accompanying violence and looting are troubling. It’s important to note that Nigeria is not alone in this; similar economic frustrations have sparked protests in developed nations like the UK, highlighting the global nature of this struggle.

President Tinubu: A Tyrant in the Making?

Despite the Tinubu administration’s efforts to mitigate poverty by injecting ₦570 billion into state coffers, the impact on the ground remains unclear. The Federal Government calls for patience, arguing that policies like the removal of fuel subsidies are necessary for long-term economic recovery. However, the reality in many states tells a different story.

Consider Delta State, which received a staggering N260.7 billion in federal allocations between January and June 2024. Despite this influx of funds, the state continues to suffer from dilapidated infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, limited educational opportunities, and rampant unemployment.

Read Also : Protest: ‘Pack Of Empty Words, Load Of Irrelevancies’ – Inibehe Effiong Speaks On Tinubu’s Nationwide Address

These conditions raise critical questions: Where has this money gone? What tangible improvements have been made? Unfortunately, this pattern of misallocated resources and lack of accountability is a common thread throughout the country.

While it is easy to blame the Federal Government for Nigeria’s woes, the responsibility does not end there. State governors, who exercise considerable autonomy and control over substantial state funds, must be held accountable for the well-being of their citizens.

The “Days of Rage” protests have largely targeted the Federal Government, conveniently allowing state governors to escape scrutiny, even though they are directly responsible for implementing programs that could alleviate the people’s suffering.

It’s time for a shift in focus. Citizens, particularly those in Delta State, must demand transparency and accountability from their state leaders.

The Governor of Delta State owes his constituents a detailed account of how the N260.7 billion FAAC allocation has been utilized, along with a transparent plan for future allocations that genuinely benefit the people.

The “Days of Rage” are not just a response to federal policies or the immediate effects of decisions like the removal of subsidies – they are also a direct result of resource mismanagement at the state level.

To address the root causes of Nigeria’s ongoing struggles and to pave the way for meaningful change, we must begin holding our state governors accountable for their stewardship of public funds. Only then can we hope to resolve the underlying issues that continue to plague the nation.

  • Noah Lyles Clinches Olympic 100m Title in Dramatic Photo Finish

Noah Lyles Clinches Olympic 100m Title in Dramatic Photo Finish

US sprint star Noah Lyles won the Olympic 100m title by five-thousandths of a second from Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson in a dramatic photo finish at Paris 2024.

Showman Noah Lyles overhauled his rivals in the second half of the race to triumph by the finest of margins in a personal best 9.79 seconds.

That was the same time as Olympic debutant Thompson, who led for most of the race, but Lyles produced a spectacular finish to successfully begin his bid for a potential four golds at these Games.

Favour Ofili Qualifies for Women’s 200 Metres Race Semi-Final in Paris 2024

The United States’ former world champion Fred Kerley took bronze in 9.81, edging out South Africa’s Akani Simbine for the podium.

After a lengthy wait behind the start line to a backdrop of dramatic music in a frenzied atmosphere at Stade de France, all eight finalists finished within 0.12 seconds of Lyles in a remarkable race.

Such was the standard of the final – which GB’s Zharnel Hughes and Louie Hinchliffe failed to reach – Italy’s reigning champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs was run out of the medals and another Jamaican rising star, Oblique Seville, finished last in 9.91.

In the end it was Noah Lyles, an athlete who thrives on the sport’s grandest stages and who won three golds at last year’s World Championships, who sprinted away in celebration once the official result appeared on the big screen.

Lyles Wins Olympic 100m Title by Narrow Margin

The 27-year-old repeatedly rang the victory bell by the side of the track after establishing himself at the pinnacle of the sport, before he targets further success in the 200m and relay events.

“You couldn’t have asked for a bigger moment,” Lyles, who was seventh at the halfway stage, told BBC Sport.

“I had to take every round as it was and I was a little upset after the first round, so I came with the aggression and… I ran 9.83 [in the semi-final].

“I hope you guys like Noah because I’ve got a lot more coming!”

    **Lyles’ Meteoric Rise**

Lyles has remained outspoken and unflinching in his belief that he has the on-track ability and off-track aura to replace Usain Bolt as the new superstar of men’s athletics.

The American has talked the talk but he continues to back it up when it matters most.

Lyles last year became the first man since Bolt in 2015 to win a 100m and 200m world double, before completing a golden treble in the 4x100m relay.

Lyles claimed in the build-up to the Paris Games that he would look to add the 4x400m to that haul in the French capital, and he hinted at his form when running a 100m personal best at the London Diamond League last month.

But repeating such success on these stages, under intense pressure – much of it self-imposed – is another thing entirely.

He has now become the first American to win an Olympic 100m title for 20 years, since Justin Gatlin in 2004, and asserted himself as the dominant male sprinter of the current generation.

A three-time reigning world 200m champion, he will look to maintain his grip on the sport’s major titles in that event, which starts on Monday.

Should he do so, he will move a step closer to sporting immortality in his pursuit of a historic four golds at these Games.

**GB’s Hinchliffe and Hughes Come Up Short**

Hinchliffe’s fairytale rise from obscurity less than three months ago to an Olympic 100m debut was already a stunning achievement in its own right.

But the 22-year-old and his coach Carl Lewis both said their goal was to make the final in Paris. When the Briton beat Lyles in a statement introduction in his heat on Saturday that appeared a realistic target.

Even Lewis, with his vast experience as both a nine-time Olympic champion and coach at the University of Houston for the past decade, has been surprised by the remarkable rate of Hinchliffe’s progress during their 12-month partnership.

Unfortunately, the final proved a step too far, with Hinchliffe run out of the non-automatic qualifying spots after finishing third behind Seville and Noah Lyles in his semi-final.

“It’s obviously not the result I wanted but I can’t be too hard on myself,” Hinchliffe, already the sixth-fastest British man in history, told BBC Sport.

“I’ll definitely use this experience and I’ll learn from my mistakes, so it is back to the drawing board and we’ll work on it and come back stronger next year.”

It also was not to be for Hughes, who could not set up the opportunity to replicate the breakthrough first global medal he achieved last year – or for Olympic redemption following his false start in the Tokyo final three years ago.

The 29-year-old has not been able to hit the same heights of a 2023 season in which he broke two long-standing British records over 100m and 200m, after this campaign was disrupted by a hamstring injury.

“Obviously I’m disappointed but I know where I am coming from. This is my third 100m. Not making any excuses. Today just wasn’t my day,” Hughes, who will also contest the 200m, said.

“To try to get through the rounds of the Olympics after injuring my hamstring with a grade two tear last month wasn’t that easy, but I dug deep to give myself a chance and that’s what I came here to do.”

  • Protest: ‘Pack Of Empty Words, Load Of Irrelevancies’ – Inibehe Effiong Speaks On Tinubu’s Nationwide Address

     Inibehe Effiong

Inibehe Effiong, a Nigerian human rights lawyer, has described President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday broadcast to Nigerians as “a pack of empty words and a time-wasting load of irrelevancies.”

Effiong said the president’s speech is a confirmation of his long held view that Nigerians are dealing with “a fatalistic political class that is intentionally deaf and willfully blind to the sufferings and yearnings of the citizens.”

The lawyer’s statement posted on his X handle on Sunday comes on the heels of Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast to Nigerians.

The president in his address, the president ruled out the return of fuel subsidy, contrary to the demands of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protesters, who are seeking a return of the controversial scheme.

However, not satisfied with Tinubu’s speech, Effiong said the President only did what despots do, which according to him is ignoring the agitations of the masses.

Effiong said: “President Tinubu’s speech is just a pack of empty words and a time wasting load of irrelevancies.

“It is a confirmation of my long held view, that we are dealing with a fatalistic political class that is intentionally deaf and willfully blind to the sufferings and yearnings of Nigerians.

“This president is disconnected from the reality of the everyday Nigerian. He’s living in an imaginary Nigeria that only exists in his head. The speech couldn’t have been more meaningless and aimless.

“Those who wrote it, and Mr. Tinubu, who read it out, have succeeded in justifying the reasons for the nationwide protest.

“It is appalling that despite what we have witnessed across the country in the last three days, the President did not deem it necessary to speak to the specific demands of the protesters.

“A government is only useful if it serves the interests of the governed. This government is anti-people.

“Tinubu made no mention of electoral reform, no reversal of his horrible and devastating economic policies, he made no attempt to cut down the overbloated size of his government.

    “Tinubu made no concessions.

“This President only did what despots do; ignore the agitations of the masses.

“Great leaders make sacrifices for their country, but terrible leaders like Tinubu only know how to sacrifice the country for their own interests.

“It is not his voice that people wanted to hear, people wanted him to speak directly to their demands. His call for dialogue is in bad faith. He did not address the mindless killing of protesters by security agencies in any meaningful way. He also did not set up any credible machinery for a purposeful dialogue.

“Tinubu is preoccupied with the ridiculous idea that the protest is being sponsored by his political adversaries. This provocative arrogance by Nigerian politicians will be ended one day by Nigerians, one way or the other.”

CNPP Calls on Opposition to Lead #EndBadGovernance Protests Against Tinubu Govt

The ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria will enter their fifth day on Monday, August 5, as the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) urges leaders and stakeholders of all opposition parties to spearhead the demonstrations against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

President Tinubu, in a statement on Sunday, called for the suspension of the protests, expressing his understanding of the citizens’ pains and frustrations.

Soyinka Criticizes President Tinubu’s Address on Nationwide Protest

However, the CNPP, in a press release signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, sharply criticised the President’s address, describing it as a “masterclass in evasion, obfuscation, and blame-shifting” that failed to address the core issues driving the protests.

President Tinubu: A Tyrant in the Making?

The CNPP condemned the President’s silence on concrete measures to alleviate the suffering caused by the removal of petrol subsidies, stating, “The President’s silence on acceptable measures to alleviate the people’s suffering is deafening.

The organisation also criticised the government’s decision to float the Naira without a full cabinet in place, arguing that it has “exacerbated the economic chaos, leaving Nigerians to bear the brunt of the administration’s incompetence.

Holding the APC administration fully responsible for the country’s economic devastation, hunger, and suffering, the CNPP stated, “Their policies have been a toxic mix of incompetence, corruption, and callous disregard for human life.

The CNPP also took aim at opposition parties for their failure to provide a united front against the APC’s misrule, warning, “It is time for opposition politicians to stop hiding behind press releases and take to the streets to lead the protests against the government’s pain-inflicting policies or speak no more.

The organisation emphasised the responsibility of opposition parties to lead the nationwide demonstrations and offer credible alternatives to the government, stating, “Anything less will remain unacceptable to Nigerians.

President Tinubu: A Tyrant in the Making?

President Tinubu: A Tyrant in the Making By Farooq Kperogi.

President Tinubu’s self-serving speech–which basically sang his own praises, said he’d heard the people’s anguished cries but won’t do anything about the cries and then threatened that the people shouldn’t cry for much longer or they’d be crushed– signposts the making of an unfeeling tyrant.

If the people close to him don’t stop him and the masses of the people let him get away with it, he’ll transmogrify into a terrifyingly ruthless monster that may end Nigeria as we know it.

A famous Arabic proverb goes: “They asked the Pharoah, ‘What made you a tyrant?’ He said, ‘No one stopped me.’”

The proverb tells us about the psychology of power that I’ve written about in oast columns. Subordinates flatter people in power, copy their ways, and shield them from the harsh truth about them. This sycophantic drooling by subordinates makes leaders lose touch with reality.

The truth Tinubu must know is that the current hardship in Nigeria is not survivable. This is not an issue of political partisanship.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 34, has finished a career milestone that long eluded him as he bagged his very first-ever gold medal in tennis at the Olympics.

On Sunday, Djokovic of Serbia defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz to finish among the sport’s legends as the fifth player ever to finish a career Golden Slam.

Djokovic, 37, won a thrilling final at Roland Garros on Sunday 7-6 [7/3], 7-6 [7/2]. It took him to 24 Grand Slam titles and he became the oldest singles champion since tennis’s return to the Olympic program in 1988.

The victory puts him in the distinguished company of Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams as the only players to have won all four Grand Slams and an Olympic singles gold.

Alcaraz was looking for his shot at Olympic gold after an excellent summer that had seen him win both the French Open and Wimbledon; this tenacious display from Djokovic denied him.

He did celebrate quite emotionally, however. He held high the Serbian flag and shared a moment with his family in the player’s box.

We almost played three hours, the final shot was the only moment when I was sure I could win the match,” Djokovic said after a battle that must have tired him to the core, particularly as he had lost to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final recently.

In terms of both endurance and skill, both players did very well: neither gave up serve, with Djokovic saving a few break points to cruise through both tiebreaks and seal the win after two hours and 50 minutes of high-quality tennis.

In the other Olympic tennis news, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti won the bronze medal after defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime to take his country’s first men’s tennis medal for a century.

Dollar To Naira 4th August 2024: See Black Market Aboki FX Rate

For many Nigerians, especially those engaged in foreign trade, travel, and investments, there is a nagging concern for the dollar-naira exchange rate.

The black market rate for dollars to naira, parallel or Aboki FX as some know it will most of the time give different rates from the official CBN rates.

The exchange rate at this point was still wiggling up and down. We will discuss in this article how the rate has moved up to this current dollar to naira exchange rate today, August 4, 2024, what drives the rate, and how all these affect the economy of Nigeria.

Understanding the Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

  • #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria: Protesters Block Road, Hold Sunday Service In Plateau

The protesters, brandishing Nigerian flags, blocked the Old Airport Roundabout, compelling motorists to seek alternative routes within the metropolis.

     Protesters

On Sunday, August 4, many protesters in Jos, the Plateau State capital, organised a church service as part of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, which began on Thursday.

The ongoing church service is being held at the Old Airport Roundabout, with a large crowd of protesters in attendance, including Christian and Muslim leaders as well as a former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung.

The protesters, brandishing Nigerian flags, blocked the Old Airport Roundabout, compelling motorists to seek alternative routes within the metropolis.

Some of those who spoke with The PUNCH said the church service is significant because they believe that God still has the capacity to intervene in the affairs of Nigeria and turn things around for the good of the suffering citizens.

A protester, Philip Madaki, who said he arrived at the Old Airport Junction for the Sunday service around 7:30 am, said, “I have been participating in the protest since it began on Thursday, and today being Sunday, we are continuing with the protest with a church service.

“As the protest is ongoing, we believe that God Almighty has not abandoned the country and its citizens, and we know He has the power to turn the hearts of kings in whichever direction He wants.

“And we want Him to visit our leaders in the country, especially those in governance positions, and touch their hearts so that they will know that the citizens are really suffering because of bad governance and their harsh economic policies in the country and be able to do something to change the situation. That’s why we are adding the church service to the ongoing protests.”

  • Soyinka Criticizes President Tinubu’s Address on Nationwide Protest

Soyinka Criticizes President Tinubu’s Address on Nationwide Protest

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide address regarding the ongoing protests across Nigeria. In a statement released on Sunday, Soyinka voiced his disappointment and concern over the government’s approach to managing the protests.

Soyinka pointed out that while the presidential address outlined the government’s remedial actions since taking office, it failed to adequately address the management of the protests. He condemned the use of live bullets and tear gas against peaceful demonstrators, calling it a “retrogression” reminiscent of colonial-era tactics.

“I set my alarm clock for this morning to ensure that I did not miss President Bola Tinubu’s impatiently awaited address to the nation on the current unrest across the nation,” Soyinka began.

His outline of government’s remedial action since inception, aimed at warding off just such an outbreak, will undoubtedly receive expert and sustained attention both for effectiveness and in content analysis.

My primary concern, quite predictably, is the continuing deterioration of the state’s seizure of protest management, an area in which the presidential address fell conspicuously short.

Soyinka criticized the security forces’ use of lethal force, stating, “Such short-changing of civic deserving, regrettably, goes to arm the security forces in the exercise of impunity and condemns the nation to a seemingly unbreakable cycle of resentment and reprisals.

Live bullets as state response to civic protest – that becomes the core issue. Even tear gas remains questionable in most circumstances, certainly an abuse in situations of clearly peaceful protest. Hunger marches constitute a universal S.O.S, not peculiar to the Nigerian nation.

He continued, “The tragic response to the ongoing hunger marches in parts of the nation, and for which notice was served, constitutes a retrogression that takes the nation even further back than the deadly culmination of the watershed ENDSARS protests.

It evokes pre-independence – that is, colonial – acts of disdain, a passage that induced the late stage pioneer Hubert Ogunde’s folk opera BREAD AND BULLETS, earning that nationalist serial persecution and proscription by the colonial government.

Soyinka emphasized that “the nation’s security agencies cannot pretend unawareness of alternative models for emulation, civilized advances in security intervention.

He suggested, “Need we recall the nationwide 2022/23 editions of what is generally known as the YELLOW VEST movement in France? Perhaps it is time to make such scenarios compulsory viewing in policing curriculum.

In all of the coverage that I watched, I did not catch one single instance of a gun leveled at protesters, much less fired at them even during direct physical confrontations. The serving of bullets where bread is pleaded is ominous retrogression, and we know what that eventually proves – a prelude to far more desperate upheavals, not excluding revolutions.

Soyinka concluded by urging a shift away from the use of lethal force, stating, “The time is long overdue, surely, to abandon, permanently, the anachronistic resort to lethal means by the security agencies of governance.

No nation is so under-developed, materially impoverished, or simply internally insecure as to lack the will to set an example. All it takes is to recall its own history, then exercise the will to commence a lasting transformation, inserting a break in the chain of lethal responses against civic society.

Today’s marchers may wish to consider adopting the key songs of Hubert Ogunde’s BREAD AND BULLETS, if only to inculcate a sense of shame in the continuing failure to transcend the lure of colonial inheritance where we all were at the receiving end. One way or the other, this vicious cycle must be broken.

Favour Ofili Qualifies for Women’s 200 Metres Race Semi-Final in Paris 2024

Nigeria’s Favour Ofili has qualified for the women’s 200 metres semi-final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Ofili secured her spot with a season-best time of 22.24 seconds, winning heat 6 of the event. She outpaced notable competitors, including Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Gambia’s Gina Bass-Bittaye.

The 21-year-old athlete’s achievement comes amid controversy, as she was denied participation in the 100-metre race due to administrative failures by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC). Ofili expressed her frustration on social media, highlighting the negligence that cost her the opportunity.

“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 metres at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for four years to earn this opportunity. For what?” she tweeted.

In response, Sports Minister John Owan Enoh announced an investigation into the exclusion of Favour Ofili from the 100m women’s event. He acknowledged that similar issues have affected athletes from other countries but emphasized his concern for Nigeria’s accountability.

“I have been duly informed that some other countries have similar issues, and these aforementioned bodies do not want to open a floodgate that would become difficult to manage. Howbeit, I am not concerned about other countries.

My interest is with my own country Nigeria and who is responsible for the nonlisting of Favour Ofili,” Enoh stated.

He further noted that World Athletics had indicated the AFN should have addressed the omission when the final list was published in July.

“At what point did her name drop out of the 100m race? Who’s responsible for this? What’s the motivation behind this? What’s the trail of communication from AFN to NOC and to IOC and/or World Athletics?” Enoh questioned.

Despite the setback, Favour Ofili’s impressive performance in the 200 metres brings hope and pride to her supporters as she advances to the semi-finals.

  • Mixed Reactions Trail Tinubu’s Address To #EndBadGovernance Protesters, Nigerians

     Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide address on Sunday, August 4, 2024, has elicited mixed reactions.

The address tackled the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests and outlined his administration’s response to the nation’s pressing challenges.

However, the President’s address has received mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media.

On X, Olagunju Oladele (#TechInitiative) noted that the President’s address focused on his achievements rather than addressing the issues.

He said, “President Tinubu’s speech was more focused on highlighting his achievements and broader initiatives rather than directly addressing the specific demands of the protesters. I understand it’s an attempt to showcase progress and build trust, but it still fails to understand his people.”

Similarly, Aliyu Tanimu, with the username #IamAliyu_Tee, said that while Tinubu condemned violence in his speech, he chose to ignore the root causes of the unrest.

“President Tinubu’s speech acknowledges protests but falls short in empathising with the masses’ grievances. He condemns violence yet ignores the root causes of unrest.

“His focus on economic reforms and achievements seems tone-deaf amidst widespread suffering,” he posted.

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2022 general election, Omoyele Sowore, in a quoted post to the address on X, called it “Beautiful Nonsense.”

Sowore had posted the speech hours earlier on his page before the President made the broadcast.

This sparked diverse reactions from Nigerians who demanded to know why it was “leaked,” with some suggesting that Tinubu’s media aide be sanctioned.

Sowore, via his official handle #yelesowore, posted, “#officialABAT Much Ado About Nothing Speech to be delivered as a continuation of the 2023 election campaign.

CAMPAIGN AFTER ELECTION! #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria revolt continues until we win! #RevolutionNow #DaysOfRage.”

Another X user, #Mr_Teekay001, regarded the address as a threat.

He wrote, “Did anyone else sense he issued a threat in his address? He’s just talking about abstract achievements that won’t materialise anytime soon. It’s frustrating to hear promises without any concrete plans or timelines for implementation. Such statements only serve to increase scepticism and erode public trust. #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria.”

Another user, Changing Narratives with the username #xtianareal, wrote, “President Tinubu succeeded in inspiring all who’d been chilling at home to join the

    #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest by Monday.

“His scriptwriters don’t learn at all, pushing propaganda instead of addressing issues. Since they’re so out of touch with reality, it will hit them soon.”

Conversely, Omogbolahan, #GbolahanAkinwum, wrote, “A summary of President Tinubu’s address regarding the elimination of fuel subsidies and implementation of a uniform exchange rate, among other topics relevant to the current protests, emphasising that although challenging, these measures will ultimately prevent future difficulties.”

An X user, #Imran_Khan0855, stressed the non-reversal of subsidy removal.

He said, “In summary, President Tinubu contradicted himself. He won’t reverse his decision on the fuel subsidy, but he is asking us to embrace dialogue. Dialogue on what exactly? He has no plans to listen to Nigerians. He should’ve just kept quiet and continued with his agenda.”

In his view, GOOD MAN (#Ezinwa_Maduka) said, “President Tinubu is an unrepentant tyrant. His speech is nothing but insults and blackmail against the Nigerian people, addressing nothing but grandstanding over his failed policies, unwilling to take responsibility for more than 40 persons killed by his government in three days.”

From Facebook, Ayekooto Akindele wrote, “My condolences to all fuel subsidarians across the nation. May God grant you the fortitude to bear this irrevocable loss.

“Don’t allow your livelihood to rely entirely on awoof from CBN or NNPC because you don’t know when your Tinubu will arrive! Get decent work!”

Reacting, Oluwafisayomi Oyeyemi, #Realzaddylion, posted, “If you are a supporter of this APC, jokes aside you need to be ashamed of yourself seriously. These people are disgracing you.”

However, in a show of support, another X user, #Olai_Yus, said Tinubu had shown good prospects to improve the standard of living so far.

“Patience is the missing ingredient and with a little more time. We’ll get it right. Rome wasn’t built in a day. With the policies and reforms seen so far, I know Tinubu is making headway.”

PUNCH Online reports that a major protest erupted on Thursday, 1st August, across Nigeria, driven by public dissatisfaction with current economic and social conditions.

Demonstrators voiced their frustrations nationwide, calling for reforms and greater accountability.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu appealed for patience with his policies and urged citizens not to let hoodlums exploit the unrest.

The protest underscored the nation’s desire for change while highlighting the need for peaceful and constructive dialogue.

Nationwide Protest: Tinubu’s Speech Was Great, Inspiring – Keyamo

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has said President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday broadcast to Nigerians was great and inspiring.

Keyamo said the President’s speech was compassionate, firm, conciliatory, but not condescending.

“Great and inspiring speech by Mr. President @officialABAT. Compassionate, yet firm; conciliatory, yet not condescending; resolute on our objectives, yet reassuring. Wonderful balance,” the Minister posted on X.
