    The Yobe State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru areas following reports of hoodlums exploiting the hardship protest to loot government properties. The decision was announced on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsallam (retd).

    In his statement, Abdulsallam emphasized that the curfew would be strictly enforced, with security agencies directed to ensure compliance.

    The Yobe State Government has considered the security situation in Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru towns where some hoodlums are taking advantage of the protest to vandalize and loot government and private properties,” the statement read.

    “Therefore, the state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru. The public is hereby advised to abide by the curfew order and stay at home for peace to reign in these areas and the state at large. The Security Agencies have been directed to ensure enforcement and full compliance with the curfew order.

    This development comes amid similar actions in Borno State, where a curfew was declared after protesters in Maiduguri’s Bulunkutu area turned violent.

The security personnel deployed were overpowered by the protesters. A woman injured by a teargas canister is currently receiving treatment at Gumel General Hospital.

    In Birnin Kudu, the State Fertilizer Store and Grains Store were vandalized and looted. The hoodlums also blocked major roads, including the Kano-Maiduguri Highway.

    In Dutse, the state capital, five individuals were admitted to Rasheed Shekoni General Hospital for injuries sustained during the chaos. Security operatives managed to prevent further vandalism of public properties, though the APC state secretariat was set ablaze.

    Similar incidents were reported in Jahun, Kazaure, and Shuwarin towns, where hoodlums posing as protesters called for an end to bad governance. Despite the efforts of Islamic clerics and Traditional Rulers to dissuade youths from joining the nationwide protests, fears of further escalation remain as groups continue to defy directives.

    According to Daily Trust, the agitated protesters, numbering in the hundreds, set up roadblocks, hindering vehicular movement and damaging private and commercial vehicles that attempted to pass.

    The protesters, both young men and women, chanted anti-government slogans and carried placards with inscriptions such as “Ba ma yi,” “Tinubu must go,” “End the bad governance,” and “There is hunger.”

    One protester, identified as Muhammad, stated that neither teargas nor gunshots would deter them from exercising their constitutional right to protest. “We want the world to know the kind of injustice meted against us by the police. They shoot teargas at us while conducting our peaceful protest, and that would not deter us,” he said.

    In response to the situation, State Police Command Spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso issued a statement explaining that the curfew was implemented due to security concerns, including a bomb explosion that occurred on Wednesday.

    Daso stated, “In view of the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security and law enforcement agencies toward the preservation of law and order in the state. You are all aware of the incident that took place at Kawori, which was the detonation of an improvised explosive device leading to the death of sixteen persons, while several others were critically injured and are on admission across various government hospitals in the state.”

    He continued, “In line with our constitutional mandate towards the restoration of law and order, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with heads of security in the state, finds it expedient to declare a 24-hour curfew in the state with immediate effect.”

    Daso urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that further developments would be communicated as necessary.

    President Bola Tinubu is mourning the passing of the Owa of Idanre kingdom and paramount ruler of Idanre land, Oba Frederick Aroloye.

    He sent his condolence to the residents of Idanre, the government, and the citizens of Ondo State following the death of the revered monarch.

    TORI reported earlier that the first-class traditional ruler in Ondo died on Wednesday morning at the age of 102.

    A high Chief confirmed his death in the community, Christopher Oluwole Akindolire, according to TVC.

    The traditional ruler, Oba Aroloye, ascended the throne in 1976 and necessary traditional rites have commenced for his burial.

    A statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, highlighted the President’s tribute to the esteemed traditional ruler.

    President Tinubu described the late monarch as “an advocate of peace, prosperity, and development during his remarkable 48-year reign on the throne of his ancestors.”

    “While joining the good people of Idanre to pray for the repose of the soul of the late monarch, the President affirms that the Owa will be long remembered for upholding the dignity of the throne and for his unwavering commitment to the progress of his people,    ” it added.

    Residents of Ondo State have expressed apprehension over the nationwide protest slated for today, August 1.

    While monitoring the situation in Akure, the Ondo State capital, DAILY POST reports that there is slight movement of people.

    According to a civil servant who gave her name as Funmbi Oladiran, “I don’t think that I’ll be going to the office.

    “I don’t want the situation of the EndSARS protest to repeat itself. I was in town when the violence started, and I was stranded because I couldn’t get home.

    “I thank God that the children are now on holiday, and I can’t leave my children at home because nobody knows what will happen.”

    Also, a trader at Arakale Road, Charles Ebuka, disclosed that a meeting had been held by traders to prevent the destruction of any of their goods.

    “We will hang around our shops and observe the situation before anyone is allowed to open the shops.

    “The protests are okay, but the problem is that some people with another motive will want to use them to attack other people’s businesses,” he said.

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abayomi Oladipo, has assured residents of the state, as well as genuine protesters that adequate security will be provided to forestall any move by hoodlums to perpetrate breakdown of law and order.

    “We are to ensure the EndSARS and Kenya experiences are not reenacted in this country. We will not allow the situation to descend into chaos. We will not allow public infrastructure to be destroyed.

    “We are prepared to protect property and lives. If you have information about the activities of the fifth columnists, pass the information along so that we can respond to such a situation.

    “There has not been any group or person who has indicated interest in participating in the protest in line with the virtual meeting with the IGP for them to state their route.

    “Nigerians are advised to go about their normal business. We will not allow people to go and loot shops and business premises,” he warned.

    “Reflecting on the tragic events of the EndSARS protest in 2020, it began peacefully but was later hijacked, resulting in immense destruction and loss. We will NOT allow history to repeat itself. During the protests, we saw the destruction of valuable properties and institutions: Lagos High Court, 45 police stations, 12 Local Government offices, 7 Fire Stations, and the Forensic Centre, among others.

    The City Hall, Nigeria Ports Authority headquarters, and traditional rulers’ palaces were also destroyed. Malls, shops, offices, and hundreds of brand-new BRT buses were lost. Such devastation only sets us back economically and socially.”

    While admitting that indeed Nigeria is experiencing challenges, he said the Tinubu-led government is working to address them and alleviate Nigerians’ pain.

    “For weeks, we’ve faced the prospect of protests aimed at ending what some call ‘bad government’. While the intentions may be noble, some narratives suggesting it’s a means to change the government by non-constitutional means are troubling. Is a protest the catalyst for progress we need now? Will it ensure our challenges vanish in ten days? Will it lower food prices or inspire economic growth? I strongly believe it won’t. Instead, it could undo the modest gains we’ve made,” he admonished.

    August 1 Protests: You Don’t Speak For Igbo – Umahi Lambasts Peter Obi

    Minister of Works David Umahi has lambasted Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, saying he is not the mouthpiece for Igbos.

    Umahi added that Obi should refrain from allegedly inciting the youth of the South-East against the administration of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the planned August 1 protest.

    Umahi spoke on Wednesday during the Ebonyi State Youth and Stakeholders Summit held at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki.

    “Let me make this clear: His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, does not speak for Ndigbo. Our governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo, and our traditional rulers are our leaders; they speak for us. Let the enemies of Ndigbo hear this loud and clear: our governors and Ohaneze Ndigbo are the mouthpieces of Ndigbo.

    “Let no one take the comments of one individual and use them to malign us. We are a very peaceful people. We will continue to support Mr. President. My advice to our brother is to reconsider his stance to avoid inciting some uninformed youths against the rule of law and endangering the peace of the nation.

    “Whenever there is a protest, the economy of that nation suffers. The EndSARS protest did not yield anything constructive; instead, people gathered to engage with the government, and the issues raised were addressed.

    “Protests do not produce results. It is when you make your grievances known in a constructive manner that they will be addressed. Let me emphasise that President Bola Tinubu is addressing all the grievances of the youths and the people,” Umahi stated.

    Addressing the youths and stakeholders present, Ebonyi State governor Francis Nwifuru urged the youth of the state not to participate in the planned nationwide protests against hardship, assuring them that his administration is working diligently to address issues that will improve the lives of every Ebonyi citizen.

    Governor Nwifuru pledged that his administration would always listen to the concerns of the state’s youth, ensuring that their demands, requests, and aspirations are met.

    “Let me be clear: those who were the primary beneficiaries of the fuel subsidy are the ones resisting the interests of Nigerian youths. However, with our support, President Bola Tinubu will undoubtedly overcome all those who oppose his administration,” the governor stated.

    Other leaders of Ebonyi State who spoke out against the planned protest included former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former governor of the state, Chief Martin Elechi, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, traditional rulers, and representatives from the student union bodies in the state.

    The General Overseer and President of El-Buba Outreach Ministries International (EBOMI), Dr. Isa El-buba, took the lead in the hunger protest held on August 1st in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Thursday.

    As the national coordinator of the Initiative for Better and Brighter Nigeria (IBBN), he assured participants that the demonstration would remain peaceful throughout its duration.

    Ejes Gist News understands that protesters gathered at the Plateau Secretariat overhead bridge as early as 6 am. before proceeding towards the old airport roundabout in Jos.

    The #EndBadGovernance protests in Bauchi State and Abuja faced significant disruptions on Thursday as police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

    In Bauchi, protesters had assembled in front of the Emir of Bauchi’s palace, demanding a meeting with the Emir to discuss their grievances.

    However, they were met with a police barricade. Despite their insistence on meeting with the Emir, the police used tear gas to break up the gathering.

    Operatives of the Kano State Police Command have successfully dispersed a group of youths attempting to break into a store along Zoo Road in the state capital.

    The suspects targeted the two-storey building housing Sadaraki Stores, trying to force their way in. However, before the arrival of security operatives, the suspects had already caused damage to the building by destroying its windows.

    As the nationwide protest against economic hardship began on August 1st, the roads and streets of Lagos is presently deserted, with banks, eateries, fuel stations, and other businesses shut down.

    The streets, usually busy with activities, were very quiet as armed security forces took strategic positions throughout the city.

    Tight Security As Hunger Protest Begins Today

    Security has been beefed up in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the planned hunger protest commences today.
    This comes just as state governors and the federal government have appealed to the protesters to conduct themselves peacefully.

    In Bauchi, the state police commissioner, Auwal Mohammed, said the command had deployed personnel to possible flashpoints to avert the breakdown of law and order.

    Ejes Gist News reports that the command had asked protest organisers to supply the police with their detailed biodata, including meeting points and movement routes.

    The commissioner disclosed this in a statement by the spokesperson of the Command, SP Ahmed Wakil, and made available to reporters in Bauchi.

    Media reports indicate that protesters are expected to begin gathering at Eagles Square in Abuja mid to late morning.  In Lagos, protests may start as early as 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. and primary locations have been identified as Alausa Park, Freedom Park, and Peace Park.  Additional possible protest sites in Lagos include Nahco Bus Stop (Airport Road), Marwa Bus Stop (Lekki-Epe Expressway), and Ikeja “Under the Bridge” (Intersection of Obafemi Awolowo and Allen Avenue).  However, protests may occur at other times and locations in Abuja and Lagos, as well as in other cities and population centers in Nigeria over the coming days.  Based on past occurrences, protests may involve roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations.

    There is a risk of terror attacks in Nigeria and terrorist groups may take advantage of opportunities created during the potential nation-wide protests to conduct attacks.
