Suleja, Niger State – At least six protesters have been shot dead in Suleja, Niger State, amidst demonstrations against hunger and economic hardship. The victims were struck by bullets fired by security operatives attempting to clear protesters who had blocked a section of the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

The tragic incident marks a violent escalation on the first day of the 10-day nationwide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, which began on August 1. The protests are driven by widespread frustration over worsening economic conditions under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Incident Details

According to reports from Daily Trust, one of the victims, Yahaya Nda Isah, a resident of Hassan Dalatu Road in Suleja, was hit by a stray bullet while on his bike in front of the Suleja Police ‘A’ Division where protesters had gathered. Isah’s nephew recounted that the bullet struck Isah’s chest, killing him instantly.

A resident speaking on condition of anonymity reported that three other individuals were shot at the same location, while two more were shot at the Suleja Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna road. The condition of these additional victims remains unconfirmed.

Injuries and Hospitalization

Over 15 protesters with bullet wounds have been transported to various healthcare facilities, including Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, for treatment. The escalation has caused significant alarm among the local populace and has brought attention to the severity of the crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.

Protests and Roadblocks

The protests have led to major disruptions on the Abuja-Kaduna highway, with hundreds of travelers stranded. Abubakar Ibrahim, a traveler, reported that his vehicle was delayed for over two hours near Gauraka Junction due to the roadblock created by the protesters. The large number of protesting youths has overwhelmed the few policemen present, who have been unable to effectively clear the roadblock.
