Fuel Scarcity Looms as Oil Marketers Shut Down Stations Ahead of Planned Nationwide Protest

Fuel Queues Resurface as Oil Marketers Shut Down Stations Ahead of Planned Nationwide Protest.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Oil marketers in Abuja and neighboring states of Niger, Nasarawa, and Kogi have shut down their filling stations, leading to widespread fuel queues. This development rears its head as growing concerns over a planned nationwide protest against hardship scheduled for August 1st heighten.

The ones that include those owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, all stopped dispensing fuel to consumers beginning from Friday in Abuja. This scene repeated itself in parts of Niger and Nasarawa states. Long queues have been recorded particularly at the AYM Shafa Station in Dei-Dei and the NNPC station in Zuba, Niger State.

Many filling stations were reported to have been locked in Lagos, a development which many feared was a pointer to imminent scarcity of the products. Most of the stations were not dispensing fuel, while the few who managed to do so sold at exorbitant prices at N800 per liter.

The queue at filling stations in Ogun State was unbearable as the situation deteriorated. The road was flanked with vehicles, from motorcycles to cars and buses, haphazardly parked in respect of fuel. The motorists groaned in discomfort. One such commercial bus driver, who was traveling to Ibadan, said after he had spent over an hour of his life in this queue, thus: “I didn’t expect that sort of long queue. My passengers are complaining, but there’s nothing I can do.”.

Some marketers attributed the closures to the unavailability of fuel, while others blamed the apprehension over the planned protest. According to Mohammed Shuaibu, the Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, although some stations might have closed because of unavailability of the product, others took preventive measures due to the fear of the protest.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, enjoins restraint and appeals to Nigerians not to participate in the planned protest.

Understanding the Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

Dialogue With Protest Organisers, There Is Hunger In Nigeria – Isoko Youths Urge Tinubu

In a bid to avert the proposed nationwide protest slated for August 1 to August 19 against hunger and hardships in Nigeria, the Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA) Worldwide has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently dialogue with the protest organizers and review some of his administration’s policies that have caused hardship for the people to prevent the strike action from taking place.

INYA President, Comrade Eniwake Orogun, in a statement made available to the press on Saturday, stressed that there is hardship in the land occasioned by hasty government policies.

The Isoko youth body also appealed to the youths and security agencies to avoid violent protests and the destruction of national and state assets.

It also appealed to security agencies to treat protesters in a civil manner if the protest goes ahead due to the failure to dialogue and engage with the protesters.

The Isoko youth body said, “Today, we are at the edge as a nation, with all aspects of existence greatly troubled, from the economy, security, socio-political, and corporate existence coming under some form of distress and perplexity.

“It is said that light exists at the end of the tunnel, but this particular tunnel seems too long that not even a flicker of light is in sight.

“It will be foolhardy to try to deny or explain the hardship which pervades the land, exacerbated by policies such as fuel subsidy removal, which many believe has produced the unintended outcome, or should we say, the exact intended outcome associated with wrong timing or hasty policy implementation, favorable only to some fifth columnists?

“Many are hungry, weak, and beggarly. The hardship is palpable, and succor seems far. The proposed protest is only a natural response, which is the least the vast majority of those who live below the baseline can do at this material time.

“Regardless, this protest can be avoided. We call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to act as a matter of urgency by doing the following:

“Constructive engagement of critical stakeholders with a genuine view to providing short, medium, and long-term solutions to the myriad of problems facing the people.

“Reevaluate its priorities and address head-on issues such as inflation, insecurity, and the high cost of governance.

“Reconsider policies such as fuel subsidy removal, floating of the naira, and liberalization of our economy which have never worked in Nigeria or any part of Africa and have proven to be very injurious to individuals, families, and businesses.

“Our leaders must learn from the 2011 Arab Spring and the recent not-too-good experience of the EndSARS protest, from which Africa and Nigeria are yet to fully recover, and act in the best interest of the nation.

“To our dear youths and fellow comrades, we stand by you at this trying time.

“However, if the protest must hold, hopefully it does not, let us be reminded that though our right to peaceful protest is inalienable and guaranteed by our constitution, we do not have the right to be destructive and violent. No one benefits from the destruction of national assets; if anything, it increases the suffering which the protest stands against.

“To our gallant security personnel, we implore you not to fall to the temptation of responding with brute force to our people, should the protest hold.

“Understand that people are hungry and angry, and the least expected of you is the performance of your constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

“This is a trying period in our history as a people, and together we shall overcome.”

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, has asked all groups planning to participate in the proposed nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.

He spoke while addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday.

He said this was to ensure the protest was peaceful.

Egbetokun said, “We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest.

“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.

“To facilitate a successful and incident-free protest, they should please provide the following information: state the proposed protest routes and assembly points; expected duration of the protest; and names and contact details of protest leaders and organisers.”

FG Approves Sale of Agip Oil to Tinubu’s Nephew

Agip Oil Company sold to Tinubu’s Nephew.

Italian oil giant Eni announced on Wednesday that it had received approval from the Nigerian government to proceed with the proposed sale of Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) to Oando, managed by Wale Tinubu, President Bola Tinubu’s nephew.

“Eni has received formal consent from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) for the sale of NAOC Ltd to Oando Plc,” stated Eni in a press release.

The sale will allow Agip to concentrate on its offshore operations. This move comes after an exclusive report by Peoples Gazette, which highlighted that one of the conditions for restoring Eni and Shell’s oil prospecting licence OPL 245 last year was the transfer of Eni’s onshore assets to Oando.

“Having already obtained all other relevant local and regulatory authorities’ authorisations, this achievement will allow Eni to proceed to the completion of the transaction for the sale of Nigerian Agip Oil Company Ltd (NAOC Ltd), Eni’s wholly owned subsidiary focusing on onshore oil & gas exploration and production as well as power generation in Nigeria, to Oando PLC, Nigeria’s leading national energy solutions provider,” Eni added.

However, Eni excluded a five percent stake in the Shell Production Development Company Joint Venture (SPDJV) from the transaction. “NAOC Ltd’s participating interest in SPDC JV (Shell Production Development Company Joint Venture – operator Shell 30%, TotalEnergies 10%, NAOC 5%, NNPC 55%) is not included in the perimeter of the transaction and will be retained in Eni’s portfolio,” the statement clarified.

Initially, officials from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) opposed the sale, arguing that Eni lacked the necessary authorization. However, they eventually relented upon discovering that the president had a personal stake in the transaction, sources told The Gazette.

The acquisition of NAOC by Oando marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest given the familial connection to President Tinubu.

President Tinubu Fires Top Appointee Over Alleged N1.4 Billion Embezzlement

President Bola Tinubu has sacked Sani Auwalu Balarabe from his position as HoD, Chief of the Intercountry Centre for Oral Health for Africa, ICOH, over an alleged embezzlement of N1.4 billion during his tenure.

As far as one could gather from the People’s Gazette, the appointment of Balarabe was terminated on the 18th of July, following a spate of petitions that related to financial misconduct and investigations. The president appointed one Taiwo Olaniyi to replace him.

In January, several petitions were sent to the House of Assembly, EFCC, Ministry of Health, and other government agencies to investigate activities of Balarabe at ICOH. The petitions leveled accusations against Balarabe, saying that he had not conducted any research despite the institute receiving huge budgetary allocations, which is its core mandate.

One of the petitions dated January 16 had this: “Despite all these budgetary allocations, the centre has not produced a single oral health research project, which is its core mandate and the reason for its establishment.

It further brought to the fore that projects initiated under Balarabe’s administration, such as the construction of a remodeled dental clinic and administration block and the procurement of project vehicles, costing over N700 million, were never completed.

The petitions also accused him of backdating the appointment letters for new staff and paying them arrears of their salary, with such money to be returned to a particular account. These funds are said to have been applied toward some expenses at ICOH.

The sacking of Balarabe clearly typified President Tinubu’s commitment to corruption fighting and making those in charge of public institutions accountable.

Airport Filled Up as Governors, Senators, Rep Members, and Ministers Flee Abroad Amidst Protest Fears – Fayose

Airport is filled up, Governors, Senators, Rep Members and Ministers traveling abroad because of protest’ — Fayose

The brother to former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, Isaac Fayose, has raised an alarm over a mass exodus of top Nigerian politicians outside the country.

This followed the news of a nationwide protest due to bad governance.

In the viral video on social media, which NewsWeek Nigeria obtained, Fayose blasted the mass exodus of governors, senators, and other big guns. According to him, this is in reaction to the impending demonstrations.

“House of Representatives members, senators, governors, and ministers are all traveling abroad suddenly because of the protest,” Fayose said in the video.

Angry Nigerian youths and activists have vowed to continue the protest, which had been organized to express deep-seated dissatisfaction with the current state of governance in Nigeria. The movement has gone rampant on social media, many citizens voicing their support for the cause.

The provocation of public anger is further done by statements from Fayose, as most Nigerians see the move as an action by the politicians to run away from accountability. The situation at the airport was in a snarl, with activities heightened by officials who were rushed to leave the country.

Clearly, as the date for the protest draws near, currently, tensions are boiling over with increased pressure on the government to do the needful by attending to citizen’s grievances.
