  • Why Ministry Of Livestock Has Not Taken Off – Abubakar Kyari

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari has given explanation why the Ministry of Livestock Development has not taken off yet.

According to him, the reason is because the president is waiting for the report from the committee he setup to be submitted.

Kyari said this on Wednesday while speaking with State House Correspondents after a meeting between the Livestock Committee co-chairman, Attahiru Jega and President Tinubu.

The Minister of Agriculture said the Ministry of Livestock Development would take off as soon as the President receives report from the Jega-led committee.

“Mr. President has expressed his excitement, has expressed his anxiety and he is very anxious for this thing to take off. You are all aware that a new ministry has been created by Mr president and he is waiting for the report so that the Ministry of Livestock can take off immediately after the report has been submitted by the committee,” Kyari said.

He added that he was confident that the Livestock Committee would submit report that would provide results and solutions in the livestock industry.

“I’m sure and I’m happy with full confidence that the report will be something that we would see results and solutions, even in the mid-term and long term to what we see in the livestock industry now,” he added.

On his part, Attahiru Jega said the job of the committee is difficult. He assured that if the committee’s report is successfully implemented, it would improve the tremendous opportunities in the livestock sector.

Attahiru Jega said, “We have received great encouragement from Mr. President given his recognition that if we get this thing right, we will add tremendous value to so many things in our country.

“The challenges are many. I will not say it is not going to be difficult, it will be difficult but it is not impossible to actually get it right and I know that all the members of the committee are focused to ensure that we get this thing right.

“So Nigerians should expect from our committee recommendations that if successfully implemented could add tremendous value in terms of achieving those defined motives of opening up opportunities in the livestock sector and help to mitigate crises which are associated with this sector.”

Ministers, Celebrities, Others Show Support As Mallam Yankee Rebrands Abuja Carnival

The Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Youths Development (State), Ayodele Olawande Wisdom, Senator Ben Murray Bruce and other prominent Nigerians were at the unveiling of the logo for the rebranded Abuja International Carnival organized by Yankee Entertainment in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony which held on Wednesday at the A-Class- Park in Abuja, stakeholders in the entertainment industry agreed in one voice that the carnival would expose the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria to the rest of the world.

In his welcome address, the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Abuja International Carnival, Kehinde Adegbite, famously known as Mallam Yankee said the Abuja International Carnival was returning as a rebranded version after a long break. He commended the Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Arts and her counterpart from the Ministry of Youths Development for keying into the vision of the organizers.

Mallam Yankee expressed optimism that the carnival would showcase Nigeria to the world, assuring that the rebranded carnival with a little adjustment to the name would be of international standard to the delight of Nigerians and citizens of other countries.

According to the Yankee Entertainment boss, ” We strongly believe we can achieve international standards with this carnival and that is why it is now rebranded as Abuja International Carnival.

“Abuja Carnival belongs to everyone of us. No matter your status, no matter your level of wealth and no matter the fame, you are first a Nigerian and we must promote that. This is what we need to project. Despite the negative colouration, we need to promote the positive side because the percentage of bad people is quite low compared to those positive aspects of the country. The only way we can achieve this is by having our own carnival to showcase our culture to the world.”

Mallam Yankee appealed for government and stakeholders’ participation in the carnival that is now fixed for Nov. 21st – 23rd 2024.

In her address, Barr. Hannatu Musawa,

Honourable Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy emphasised the need for self realization of a nation with great potentials which she reeled out in a short poem.

According to the Minister, she is proud to head an industry that has continued to project the great talents and culture of Nigeria to the world.

She, however lamented that Nigeria’s rich culture was not being projected enough in the past because there was no dedicated ministry for it. She expressed hope that with the new ministry now dedicated to culture and creative economy, cultural transformation was possible.

“This is why we need to work with this platform to project our culture.. When we strengthen our culture, this is where we can use that culture and the creative industry, not only as source of power because we all know that now, the world of today, the whole world is looking to Nigeria because of our content, talent and colorful Kaleidoscope of beauty.

” Everywhere I go, you see Nigerians and we are at our best.”

The Minister assured her commitment towards ensuring that the Abuja Carnival is successful while hailing Mallam Yankee from the initiative of the rebranded carnival.

Similarly, the Minister of State for Youths Development, Ayodele Olawande Wisdom, said that youths non-involvement in government activities was the reason for agitations here and there, pledging to support any thing that will lift the hope of Nigerian youths.

He pledged to work with the organizers of the carnival for a positive outcome at the end of the day, while appealing to the youths to be a little patient with the government as efforts are being made to address the current challenges.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce hammered on the need to improve on the nation’s cultural heritage through the establishment of museums and other cultural centers. He, however, stated that the two greatest countries in the world were Nigeria and the United States, but that, “the difference between the two is that while the United States knows how to project their own, Nigeria does little or nothing in that direction.”

A former Guber aspirant, Uche Nwosu also appealed to Nigerians against violence, urging them to embrace peace no matter the level of frustration. He said engaging Nigerian youths in events such as carnivals would help a lot in drawing them close to the government.

The FCT commissioner of police, Mr. Ben Igwe emphasised that Abuja was safe for all, and that the FCT command was fully on ground to ensure the safety of visitors and residents before, during and after the carnival.

Style Plus, MI Abaga, and other artistes also graced the event which came to a close after the unveiling of the logo by industry stakeholders.

  • Defence Headquarters Breaks Silence on End Bad Govt Nationwide Protest

Defence Headquarters Breaks Silence on End Bad Govt Nationwide Protest

The Defence Headquarters has, in strong terms, warned the public against the planned nationwide protests, stressing that such protests could degenerate into a similar violent protest witnessed recently in Kenya.

The warning was given by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, while briefing the press in Abuja on Thursday.

For Major General Buba, according to intelligence reports, the protest might be hijacked by some bad elements, which would result in massive violence and chaos.

The aim of the protest is to show you what is happening in Kenya. And I will add that what is happening in Kenya on the protest, one, is violence. Two, it remains unresolved as we speak now,” said Buba.

He expounded on the probability of the protests turning violent and called for vigilance. “There are plans by some unscrupulous elements to hijack this protest and make sure that it turns violent. When it turns violent, I want to tell you what we have seen as it would likely happen. Indeed, we need to count our blessings,” he cautioned.

Speaking to the gravity of the matter, Buba warned of a potential situation of anarchy. “The level of violence being envisaged can only be described as a stage for anarchy. The Armed Forces on its part will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation.

This is because we have seen wars and we have witnessed anarchy in countries with which we have operated, particularly in times of ECOMOG and during our peacekeeping operations in various countries,” he explained.

He further appealed for citizens to reflect on the consequences of such upheaval by visiting IDP camps to see the result of conflicts. “Citizens can just go to any of the IDP camps around and see the effect of the war situation. They should allow peace to reign and not be beating drums for a war in the country.

They should allow the federal government to remedy the bad situation and put things in a proper way so that the nation can flourish again and not the other way round,” he implored.

The warning from the Defence Headquarters is simply to caution and keep things peaceful ahead of the August 1st protest date. The Armed Forces have indicated that they stand ready to intervene to prevent such a descent into anarchy. Further updates on this developing situation are expected.

  • Tinubu’s Lagos Traditional Stooges Plot Oro Festival for August 1 to Counter Protest

Tinubu’s Lagos Traditional Stooges Plot Oro Festival for August 1 to Counter Protest

End bad government in Nigeria 2024 protest.

In a move perceived by many as an attempt to counter the #EndBadGovt protest, traditional worshippers in Lagos State have announced plans to observe the Oro Festival from August 1st to August 15th. The timing of this cultural event, which involves significant rituals, has raised suspicions, especially given its coincidence with the scheduled protest dates.

This development was revealed in a notice to residents and visitors, which went viral on social media on Wednesday. The notice informed the public about the upcoming festival and its rituals, stirring concerns about potential disruptions to the planned protests.

While the state government has denied any involvement in the timing of the Oro Festival, the overlap has fueled speculations. Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, addressed the issue in an interview with Peoples Gazette. Akosile emphasized that both the protesters and the traditional worshippers have the right to exercise their respective activities, urging mutual respect to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“I saw it just like every other person did. Did you see any signatory to this statement? The answer is no! If it’s not endorsed, then it’s a nullity,” Akosile remarked. He stressed that the rights of traditional religious worshippers to carry out their rituals are valid, regardless of the protest dates. “You want to protest, I want to do my worship, it’s my right. It is now right versus right. As long as your own right does not disturb my own right, there won’t be crisis, let everybody be doing their thing,” he added.

Akosile also noted that security agencies would be on standby to ensure the protests do not turn violent and lead to a breakdown of law and order.

This isn’t the first time the Oro Festival’s timing has been contentious. Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the festival was declared, with residents noticing pots of rituals placed at several junctions and in front of some houses across the state. Just three days before the March 18, 2023, governorship election, the traditional ruler of the Ikate-Elegushi Kingdom, Saheed Ademola, declared a three-day “Oro rites,” which many believed was intended to discourage voters opposed to the ruling party from participating freely in the election.

As the August 1st protest date nears, the situation in Lagos remains tense. Both protesters and traditional worshippers are being urged to coexist peacefully and respect each other’s rights to avoid conflict and ensure a safe environment for all.

A foremost human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has constituted a legal team that will offer free legal representation to protesters who may be arrested in the course of the planned protests across the country on August 1 in Lagos State.

Effiong made an appeal on Thursday through his X handle, stating the core reason for availing of legal aid to peaceful protesters and inviting his learned colleagues in the profession to join the move.

“We are putting together a legal team in Lagos State to offer representation to any protester who may be arrested and/or charged to court during the forthcoming peaceful protest,” Effiong stated. Further, he appealed to his colleagues practicing in Lagos to share their WhatsApp numbers via direct message if they are willing to offer pro bono services to protesters. “History will vindicate the just,” he added.

The Effiong initiative comes at a time when the atmosphere in Lagos State has already been charged. Traditional worshippers declared the commencement of the Oro Festival, which falls within the dates for the protests. This coincidence has instigated fears in many stakeholders that there might be conflicts between protesters and festival participants.

On their part, the Lagos State government has distanced itself from the fixing of the festival, claiming it has no influence over the timing. The government is asking for understanding from both protesters and worshippers, appealing that due respect for their rights must be accorded to avert possible conflict.

As the August 1 protests draw near, this pre-emptive move by Effiong underlines how legal advocacy could play huge roles in deepening democratic principles for the fact that peaceful protests would have been carried out without fear of clampdown or reprisal.

Understanding the Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

  • Four Nigerians Arrested For Making Money By Allowing Kidnappers Use Their Bank Accounts To Receive Ransoms

On Wednesday, July 24, the Delta State Police Command, paraded four suspects arrested for working with kidnappers to collect ransom from kidnap victims.

Parading the suspects at the state police command in Asaba, the state capital, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the arrested suspects sent their account details to kidnappers and after the victims paid the ransom, the suspects deducted between 15% and 40% as their share and then sent the balance to the kidnappers.

The police spokesperson said, “They work in conspiracy with kidnappers. They are always in touch with kidnappers. Once they kidnap their victims and they are looking for where to send the ransom money to, they will contact this force man (pointing at one of the suspects) who contracts his friends to provide an account number where the ransom money will be sent to.

“After sending the money, they take their own commission which is between 15% and 40% and send back the balance to the kidnappers.”

The suspects are Chimerije Joshua Nwakpa, from Ebonyi State; Eze Levy Onyekachi, from Enugu State; Ezemma Maxwell Nnadozie, from Enugu State and Emmanuel Otubo, from Ebonyi State.

Interrogated by Edafe, Nwakpa said he was contacted by Nnadozie who communicated with the kidnappers to provide his account details and that ransoms were paid for three kidnap victims.

According to Nwakpa, the first ransom paid to his account was N3.6 million; second ransom was N4.3 million while the third ransom was N200,000.

He said that his share from the N3.6 million ransom was N530,000 which is 15% of the total amount.

He said after deducting his percentage, “I sent the balance to Maxwell who then sent it to them,” adding that he had known Nnadozie for about two years.

Asked if Maxwell told him that the money being sent to his account were ransoms from kidnap victims, Nwakpa said yes.

He said they used their shares of the ransoms to build a cryptocurrency website that they wished to use for internet fraud.

Asked how he got to know the kidnappers he worked with, Nnadozie said, “Ifesi (one of the kidnappers) and I were living in the same street at Oduke in Onitsha (Anambra State) when we’re small.

“Now, I don’t know where he is living but he contacted me in April to send him an account number where the ransom would be paid.”

He said that after deducting their own share, he would withdraw cash through POS and give it to the kidnappers.

The police spokesperson called on residents of Delta State to be bold to report any crime or suspicious activities in their areas to the police, whether before, during or after it has happened.

  • After Protest, Kenya’s President Ruto Appoints Four Opposition Ministers To New Cabinet

Kenya’s president William Ruto has appointed the opposition in his new Cabinet.

He recently named four ministers from the largest opposition party in an attempt to establish a broad-based cabinet that will solve governance challenges expressed in deadly protests.

President William Ruto appointed the minority leader in parliament and chairman of opposition leader Raila Odinga’s party to his new Cabinet on Wednesday, despite a split in the opposition alliance that saw other parties withdraw from government discussions.

The weeks of unrest in East Africa’s economic heartland have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, the dismissal of the majority of Cabinet members, and calls for Ruto’s resignation.

Protests began with Kenyans opposing a proposed measure to increase taxes, as millions of them struggle to make ends meet amid rising prices.

The president praised political parties on Wednesday for “their willingness to set aside partisan positions and interests in order to join a visionary partnership for Kenya’s radical transformation is a historic gesture of patriotism.”

Odinga, who has previously urged for discussions to defuse the turmoil, denied on Tuesday that he had been bribed to join Ruto in building a broad coalition government. He expressed his support for the protesters, saying that conversation would only begin once the president complied with the demonstrators’ requests.

His party’s secretary general said in a statement on Tuesday that there were no continuing talks to join the Ruto administration and that any member seeking a minister position should be aware that they were going against the party’s stand.

The opposition coalition does not lead the protests, which are led by young people who use social media to mobilise.

However, it has supported demonstrators, claiming that the terrible governance issues stated are consistent with the opposition’s offers to the government during prior opposition-led protests.

Ruto has promised to make reforms in his government, such as cracking down on corrupt officials and flaunting grandeur despite the cost-of-living issue.

According to the Kenya National Commission for Human Rights, at least 50 people have died and 413 have been injured in the protests that began on June 18.

Which Format Will They Use for Olympic Football?

The most popular sport in the world is set to return for its 29th Olympic appearance for men and its eighth for women.

The basic rules of Olympic football mirror those of domestic and international competitions. Two teams of 11 players will compete in a 90-minute match, and the team that scores the most goals will win. Group matches can end in a draw, but knockout games will go into extra time and penalties if needed.

For the men’s tournament, 16 teams are divided into four groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals.

In the women’s tournament, 12 teams are split into three groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will qualify for the knockout stages.

For the men’s teams, only three players in each squad can be over 23 years old, while there are no age restrictions for the women’s teams.

Who Has Won the Most Medals in Olympic Football?

The USA is the most successful nation in Olympic football, having won eight medals, including four golds. Hungary follows with five medals, three of which are gold.

Great Britain has also had significant success in Olympic football, securing three gold medals.

Yoruba Community Suddenly Announces Oro Festival Amid Nationwide Protests Over Hardship

In response to widespread economic protests against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Yoruba community in Lagos has announced the observance of the Oro Festival from August 1 to August 15, 2024.

The festival, a traditional Yoruba event, is intended to discourage participation in the planned nationwide demonstrations, which are driven by growing dissatisfaction with the current government.

The announcement, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user with the handle @lagospedia, linked to the Lagos State Government and known for its association with tribal sentiments, reads:

    “Public Announcement:

Attention Residents and Visitors of Lagos

Please be informed that the Oro Festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from August 1 to August 15.

This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.

    Retweet for awareness.”

The festival’s timing and nature have sparked debate, with critics suggesting that it may be used as a means to suppress dissent and prevent protesters from taking to the streets. The Oro Festival is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture, involving rituals that are traditionally observed to ensure community well-being and spiritual protection.

Abacha’s Family Drags Tinubu, Wike to Court

Former First Lady Hajia Mariam Sani Abacha and her eldest son, Mohammed, sued President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The Abacha family on Wednesday, July 24 filed an appeal against the recovery and alleged unlawful sale of a property once owned by the late General Sani Abacha.

The disputed property is located in Abuja, which the Nigerian government is said to have revoked and sold to Salamed Ventures Limited at a time without the consent of the Abacha family. This prompted the family to seek redress in court.

The family filed the legal suit over a July 19 judgment by Justice Peter Lifu, striking out their claim to the property in Maitama District, Abuja. It declared them to lack locus standi, challenging the revocation and ordered compensation of N500 million.

The appeal, filed on July 23 and argued by the family’s counsel, Reuben Atabo, a senior advocate of Nigeria, claimed the lower court erred on several grounds by dismissing the suit.

The appeal has President Tinubu, Minister Wike, the FCDA, and Salamed Ventures Limited as respondents. It is asking for an order from the appellate court to void the sale and transfer of the property.

The Abacha family contended that the property was transferred at a time when their appeal against the FCDA was still pending before the earlier decisions of the Supreme Court.

The first appellant, Mohammed Abacha, identified himself as the eldest surviving son of late General Sani Abacha, and the second appellant, Mariam Abacha, was identified as the widow of the late general.

They still contend that they cannot be stopped from prosecuting the action, no matter the Letters of Administration on the estate.

In another angle, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has just discovered fraudulent actions involving COVID-19 funds, World Bank loans, and recovered assets from General Sani Abacha. According to the EFCC, the funds meant for alleviating poverty were misspent.

MINIMUM WAGE: Akpabio Lists Categories Of Workers Entitled To N70k Monthly

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has named categories of workers who now enjoy the newly approved minimum wage of N70,000 monthly. The President, Godswill Akpabio, speaking on the new minimum wage, said all employees, including house helps, apprentices, and other domestic staff, are now assured of a minimum of N70,000 per month.

This was announced as the newly introduced bill for the new minimum wage was passed before the Senate on Tuesday, July 23, by President Bola Tinubu. Akpabio repeated that this pay raise affects all employers, including those in the small-scale and informal sectors like domestic workers and tailors.

    In his speech, Akpabio said:

“If you are a tailor and you employ some hands and you can’t pay them below N70,000. If you have housemaids, you cannot pay them below N70,000. If you are employing a driver or a gateman, you cannot pay below N70,000.”

This follows closely on the heels of an accord between President Tinubu and labour leaders on the consequential increase in the minimum wage, from N30,000 to N70,000. This was reached at after a prolonged negotiation among government, labour unions, and the organized private sector.

The report has it that the bill, which was forwarded to the National Assembly by President Tinubu on July 23, has been considered and passed by the Senate and House of Representatives. By this, the salary boost is indicative of government action as a result of economic measures, such as removing the subsidy on fuel.

He has also faced criticism on an unrelated issue for his handling of the Senate Proceedings. For instance, it has recently been reported that he interjected the Senate session debate being held by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and asked that the Senate go on recess. This follows another issue of his behavior concerning Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan.
