In response to widespread economic protests against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Yoruba community in Lagos has announced the observance of the Oro Festival from August 1 to August 15, 2024.

The festival, a traditional Yoruba event, is intended to discourage participation in the planned nationwide demonstrations, which are driven by growing dissatisfaction with the current government.

The announcement, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a user with the handle @lagospedia, linked to the Lagos State Government and known for its association with tribal sentiments, reads:

“Public Announcement:

Attention Residents and Visitors of Lagos

Please be informed that the Oro Festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from August 1 to August 15.

This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.

Retweet for awareness.”

The festival’s timing and nature have sparked debate, with critics suggesting that it may be used as a means to suppress dissent and prevent protesters from taking to the streets. The Oro Festival is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture, involving rituals that are traditionally observed to ensure community well-being and spiritual protection.
