NCC Orders Immediate Reactivation of All Sims Affected by NIN-SIM Verification

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Communications Commission directed telecommunication operators to reactivate, with immediate effect, all blocked SIM cards affected in the ongoing exercise of verification of NINs and linking them with SIM cards. This occurred after many MTN users lamented deactivation of their mobile lines for failure to link their NINs with phone numbers.

According to Naija News, the blanket deactivation that began on Sunday left many customers very dissatisfied. MTN offices across the nation are now riddled with customers who flock to have their phone lines reactivated, protesting and lamenting the development that their lines were suddenly cut off.

The mandate by the NCC to disconnect SIMs not linked to NINs had been set to be enforced from July 31, 2024. An early deactivation taken unexpectedly by the operators, however, drove the regulatory body to intervene, underlining the need for urgent measures toward reinstating service to affected users.

In a statement Monday, the NCC had reiterated that access to communication services must be available to all and declared its requirement for compliance with its reactivation order on telecommunications operators. The swift response from the commission shall ease inconveniences meted out on millions of subscribers and ensure them continued access to mobile services.

This move reflects the persisting difficulties and complexities left in the course of the NIN-SIM linkage exercise, an initiative within the strategy of the federal government toward cementing its action aimed at improving life security in the country and making processes of identification seamless. The latest directive by the NCC looks at striking a fine balance between these objectives and the need not to allow a communications blackout in Nigeria.

The type of measures that would facilitate the smooth and efficient restoration of service during the reactivation process should be implemented by the telecom operators. All subscribers whose SIMs were deactivated are advised to visit their respective service providers’ outlets or reach out to customer support in order to enable fast reactivation.

The NCC wishes to reassure the general public that it is still committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to have the NIN-SIM verification exercise implemented successfully while minimizing disruptions to critical telecom services.

  • Think Of What You

    post

A Facebook user, Anayo Henry has blamed a Nigerian woman who lamented about her husband’s infidelity, stating that she might have pushed him to be with the mistress.

The woman had commented on a post about Yul Edochie, his second wife, Judy, and estranged first wife May, saying that she’s currently facing the same issue in her marriage.

“I don’t like saying anything about this family because my husband is also misbehaving with another woman. So I can only say God help women in Jesus name, amen,” she wrote.

Responding to her comment, Anayo insinuated that the lady must have driven her husband into the arms of another woman.

“Madam, have you checked yourself? Think of what you have not been doing or doing well that sent your husband into another woman’s embrace. Hardly a man dumps a woman he married with his hard-earned resources for a random woman without a strong cause,” he wrote.

Breaking: Tinubu Signs ₦70,000 New Minimum Wage Bill Into Law

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu signed into law the National Minimum Wage Amendment Bill 2024, with a new minimum wage of N70,000. The move represents the coming into effect of the significant legislative action taken at Monday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, July 29, 2024.

This bill, when it becomes law, is a far-reaching improvement upon the previous minimum wage, which the government had posited as a response to the continuous economic hardships in Nigeria and the agitations of the Nigerian workforce for improved living wages. It is likely to involve millions of workers across all sectors, with the intention of improving their purchasing power and standard of living.

In an address, President Tinubu described the amendment as a very major step towards social and economic equity. “This new minimum wage is a testament to our commitment to improving the lives of Nigerian workers and to ensuring that they get a fair deal for their hard work,” he stated.

The decision to sign the bill was reached after consultations with various principal stakeholders, including trade unions, associations of employers, and experts in economics. By and large, the move by the government has been welcomed by different groups that have been lobbying for wage increases, which they say should at all times reflect the ever-rising cost of living and inflationary rates.

The Federal Executive Council meeting saw many ministers and high-ranking officials turn out in support of the legislation by appending their signatures to the bill. The bill’s provisions are expected to come into effect immediately, with measures to ensure compliance by all employers in the country.

The move by the president has been hailed as a victory by labor unions to the entire Nigerian workforce. Statements commending the action of government were issued by the NLC and TUC and appealed that the actions be implemented very fast to ensure workers start benefiting without further delays.

Some economic analysts, however, pointed out that the increase may badly hurt SMEs, who might not be in a position to pay such a minimum wage. They cautioned that while the increment was long overdue, the government will have to support businesses in the implementation of the new wage with a view toward avoiding massive job losses and company closures.

  • As Children Of God And Responsible People, Shun Protest – CAN Leader Tells Christians

The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has appealed to Christians to shun the planned nationwide protest scheduled for Aug.1 to 10.

This was contained in a message to Christians in the state signed by Bishop Bulus Yohanna, chairman of CAN, in the state.

He stated that the protest could be hijacked by hoodlums which would cause problems for innocent citizens.

The message was read in the churches across the state on Sunday, July 28.

Yohanna said: “Genuine protest can easily be seized by hoodlums and selfish groups to cause enormous havoc on innocent citizens.

“Let us shun protest, violence has never yielded positive results.”

Yohanna, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, enjoined church leaders, local government coordinators and parents to admonish their members and children to shun any planned protest in the interest of peace.

He charged them to remember the book of Romans 13:1-3 which talks about Christians not rebelling against constituted authorities.

“As you are aware, there are plans to stage a nationwide protest across the country.

“As Children of God and responsible people known for peace, I urge us all to shun the protest, speak to our children/wards and members of our congregation

    ,” he said.

He said that other well-meaning Nigerians, including the youths, had declared that they would not join the nationwide protest.

“I want us to note that as a body, the CAN, Niger state will not be part of the exercise but rather prefer to have peaceful dialogue and continue to pray for our nation,
    ” he said.

“Peaceful protest with clear demands is good but such could be hijacked by miscreants and be perceived by security as a threat which can lead to arrests/shootings.

“There is no time that violence has led to positive results, rather it has caused destructions, loss of lives and setback

    s,” said Yohanna.

He said that major stakeholders in Niger state had agreed not to join the protest.

The Bishop, however, urged governments at all levels to shun corruption and ethnic and religious bigotry.

  • Notorious Terrorist, Bello Turji Insists Tinubu’s Minister Behind Banditry (Video)

Notorious Terrorist, Bello Turji Insists Tinubu’s Minister Behind Banditry (Video)

In a startling revelation, Mohammed Bello Turji Kachalla, a notorious terrorist operating in Nigeria’s Northwest region, has reiterated his accusation that the current Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, supports terrorism. Turji, known for his operations in states like Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger, made these claims in a recent video shared by security expert Zagazola Makama on X.

Turji alleged that Matawalle, the immediate former governor of Zamfara State, has deep ties to bandits, marking his tenure with heavy criticism due to pervasive insecurity. This fresh accusation follows previous denials by Matawalle’s camp after Turji initially linked him to terrorist activities.

Peter Obi Defends Kenneth Okonkwo, Calls Him ‘My Brother and Ally, Not a Mole

“What I said in the video is that Dan Maigari and Baleri are siblings,” Turji stated, implicating Bashari in armed banditry across Zamfara and Sokoto states. He challenged Matawalle’s supporters to investigate his claims rather than dismissing them as propaganda, questioning Matawalle’s role in the kidnapping and release of female students in Marado.

Turji, operating between Zamfara and Sokoto states, asserted, “Since you said Bashari is not a bandit and said Matawalle has no hand in the banditry activities, I am asking you from whom did they rescue the girls?” He insisted his allegations were accurate and based on truth, urging sensible individuals to acknowledge the reality of the situation.

Recalling an earlier accusation in July, Turji had alleged that Matawalle was complicit in backing terrorism in Nigeria. He stated, “My name is Muhammed Bello Turji, and I am releasing this video to reach all Nigerians, from the leaders to the poor. This is the message I want to convey to everyone.”

He further added, “The issue of insecurity plaguing our country has the full backing of the immediate past Government of Zamfara State. I have evidence to support this claim. The past government, under His Excellency Bello Mattawallen Maradun (State Minister of Defence), is well-known to everyone in the region. This government has been complicit in backing terrorism.”

Reacting to these serious allegations, Matawalle’s camp swiftly denied them, describing them as baseless and malicious. In a rejoinder signed by Deyemi Saka, Lead Partner at Lambert and Curtis, Matawalle’s camp stated, “Our attention has been drawn to a video shared on the X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook page of your media organisation in which baseless, malicious, unfounded, mischievous, and deliberately concocted lies were told against the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle.”

The statement emphasized Matawalle’s efforts against banditry during his tenure as governor, highlighting his strong stance against negotiating with bandits after the closure of the amnesty window for them to lay down their arms.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Murtala Asada, a popular Islamic scholar based in Sokoto, has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s government to investigate Matawalle to prove its sincerity in fighting insecurity. Asada, known for his relentless preaching against banditry and bad governance, argued that the Federal Government should take immediate action if serious about ending terrorism.

Tinubu is protected, lawmaker claims as senators, reps, and top politicians flee abroad amidst nationwide protests

During his Sunday preaching in Sokoto, Asada said, “Is Bello Mattawalle supposed to continue holding the position as the Minister of State for Defence up to this moment? Because all evidence has been proven against him, or has it not?”

He continued, “This simply shows that the Federal Government is only wasting its time negotiating with these bandits when those sponsoring the bandits are within the cities. If you negotiate with ten bandits in the bushes, those within the cities will facilitate and kidnap hundreds more victims and send them back to the bushes. The bigwig sponsors are living in the cities.”

Asada called for divine intervention through prayers, asserting that it was due to these prayers that the truth about the involvement of high-profile individuals in banditry was coming to light. His statements underscore the urgent need for thorough investigations and decisive actions to combat the rampant insecurity in Nigeria’s Northwest region.

  • Peter Obi Defends Kenneth Okonkwo, Calls Him ‘My Brother and Ally, Not a Mole

Peter Obi Defends Kenneth Okonkwo, Calls Him ‘My Brother and Ally, Not a Mole

He Remains My Brother And Ally, Not A Mole – Peter Obi Defends Kenneth Okonkwo.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, warned his followers on Sunday not to lash out at the veteran actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo. In a post on his X account early Monday, July 29th, Obi pleaded with his followers to immediately stop calling Okonkwo a mole, as the two had been very close over the years and remained in mutual respect.

This comes after Okonkwo announced quitting Obi’s camp last Sunday. In a statement through his Instagram page, Okonkwo… criticized Obi as weak and indecisive in handling national issues, thus opting to forge a new course in his political journey.

Tinubu is protected, lawmaker claims as senators, reps, and top politicians flee abroad amidst nationwide protests

The Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiorah Ifoh, reacting to Okonkwo’s words, said the party was aware of having moles in their group and would fish out these moles and deal with them. But Obi was more appeasing in his reaction, saying there was need to be respectful and orderly even in disagreement.

The statement by Peter Obi read:

“Yesterday, I read my dear brother Kenneth Okonkwo’s open letter, in which he had different views with me on the skirmishes in our party. And today I saw various responses to the letter. I want to therefore categorically and emphatically declare that Barrister Okonkwo remains my beloved brother and a trusted ally. I sternly caution against referring to him as a mole or making any negative remarks.

“Barr. Kenneth Okonkwo has been very supportive during these trying times, and I cannot overstate his show of the spirit of brotherhood; his commitment remained unaltered. We are meant to have mis-understandings and differences, whether in a group, society, or movement; there must be a level of respect and decorum in our disagreements.”.

“Differing views do not make someone an enemy, and it is important to have constructive dialog instead of personal attacks or negative remarks. As a matter of fact, personally for me, I do not want to work with any person who always agrees with me because as a leader, learning and listening are cardinal aspects of leadership. I would like to listen to others who have differing opinions and try and convince them otherwise or take their advice if it were better.”.

“I implore all believers in a New Nigeria to continue to be strong, resilient, and focused, and not to discourage or speak ill of Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo or anybody who quits or disagrees with us on any view, strategy, or tactic taken. It is my very plain and simple message: unity, respect, and civility must reign, even in the face of any difference and divergence.”

This appeal to unity and civility by Peter Obi, therefore, is a very strong affirmation of his commitment to ensuring the sustenance of a respectable and inclusive political environment, despite these differences. It is an approach that puts a premium on constructive dialogue, plurality of opinions, and perspectives in the Labour Party at a time of high challenge for a New Nigeria.

Tinubu is protected, lawmaker claims as senators, reps, and top politicians flee abroad amidst nationwide protests

As Nigeria braces for the #EndBadGovernance protests scheduled for August 1, a significant number of senators, members of the House of Representatives, and some Federal Executive Council (FEC) members are reportedly leaving the country. These departures are being justified as medical checkups and summer holidays, but sources indicate they are preemptive measures in response to the anticipated protests.

The National Assembly chambers were unexpectedly closed last Tuesday, providing lawmakers time to secure visas and travel arrangements before the protests. This move reflects heightened concerns over safety and security amid the expected civil unrest.

Several lawmakers, speaking anonymously to Daily Sun, expressed fears of becoming targets should the nationwide protests materialize. They pointed to the violent incidents during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, which saw many of them attacked and their properties vandalized.

A senator, who preferred to remain unnamed, highlighted the particular vulnerability of lawmakers compared to ministers, governors, and presidential aides who enjoy extensive security protection. “Lawmakers are more accessible to the public, making them potential targets during major uprisings,” he explained.

He continued, “We were supposed to adjourn for our annual break next week. But we had a meeting where many lawmakers complained to the leadership of the National Assembly about the imminent threats to their lives if the protests were eventually held. We begged them to bring back the adjournment date. They listened to us.

“Lawmakers who cannot afford the needed security are leaving until the madness calms down. Some of us are not going to Europe or America. Some of our colleagues are even in Ghana and South Africa. You know for holders of diplomatic passports, it is often visa on arrival.

“As I’m talking to you, I’ve secured my ticket, and I’m leaving Abuja this weekend. President Bola Tinubu is protected. All his ministers have enough security. Governors enjoy the same. I don’t have anyone to protect me if the protesters should attack. It is safer to leave until things calm down.”

A travel agent at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja confirmed a surge in emergency ticket bookings for National Assembly members heading to Europe, the Middle East, and other African countries. This demand has significantly increased the cost of international flights, almost doubling the usual price.

The travel agent shared, “Summer tickets have gone up because of the sudden demand for them by the government’s officials. Many senators and their colleagues in the House of Representatives are the ones asking for the tickets. Some ministers are also getting tickets, claiming that they’re going for medical checkups, but I doubt it.

“I booked a flight for one senator on Saturday to the United States of America for almost $3,000 for a return ticket. South Africa and the United Kingdom are the most sought-after tickets by lawmakers. Others are asking for tickets to Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Even Ghana is also on the list.

“But one of them jokingly told me that he was leaving Nigeria to save his head. He said he’s not sure how the protests will turn out. I could see the fear in his eyes. I got a ticket to Turkey for him.”

As the protests draw near, the exodus of lawmakers and politicians underscores the mounting tension and fear of potential violence, echoing the unrest seen during the #EndSARS movement.

Understanding the Black Market for Forex

    What is the Black Market?

The black market refers to unofficial exchange channels where currencies are traded without government regulation. This market often provides more competitive rates due to the high demand and limited supply of foreign currencies.

Why Do People Use the Black Market?

People turn to the black market due to:

    • Favorable Rates: Often higher than official rates.
    • Accessibility: Easier to obtain foreign currency without stringent regulatory requirements.

    Factors Influencing Black Market Rates.

    Economic Policies

Government decisions on interest rates, inflation control, and forex regulations by the CBN directly affect the naira’s value. Policy adjustments aimed at stabilizing the naira impact the exchange rates.

    Supply and Demand

The availability of foreign currency versus its demand significantly influences exchange rates. A shortage of foreign currency or high demand leads to naira depreciation.

    Political Stability

Geopolitical events and internal political stability affect investor confidence. Political unrest or uncertainty can cause the naira to depreciate, while stability strengthens it.

    Global Economic Conditions

Global market conditions, such as oil prices, international economic trends, and global inflation rates, influence the naira’s value. A significant drop in oil prices, for instance, negatively impacts Nigeria’s economy.

Comparing Dollar to Naira Official and  Black Market Rates

    Why the Disparity?

Several factors contribute to the disparity:

    • Supply and Demand: Limited availability in the official market drives people to the black market.
    • Regulatory Restrictions: CBN imposes limits on forex availability, leading to higher black market rates.
    • Economic Instability: Fluctuations in oil prices and inflation prompt people to seek more favorable black market rates.

    Impact on the Economy

    High black market rates can:

    • Inflation: Increase costs for imported goods.
    • Investment: Deter foreign investment due to economic instability.
    • Trade: Benefit exporters while imposing higher costs on importers.

  • Kenneth Okonkwo Dumps Labour Party, Parts Ways with Peter Obi

Kenneth Okonkwo Dumps Labour Party, Parts Ways with Peter Obi

Nollywood actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has severed ties with the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The declaration was made by Okonkwo in a recent statement, an LP spokesperson during the presidential campaign council for the 2023 elections.

Okonkwo had resigned from the ruling APC on August 24, 2022, over the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket of the party and defected to the Labour Party. The 55-year-old actor said at the time he was joining the LP to create an enabling environment for good governance, and his contribution toward a new Nigeria.

He, however, no longer believes that Peter Obi has what it takes to build such a party that will be able to surmount the challenges of the kakistocrats and kleptocrats in the country. He stressed that what is needed at this time is an extremely strong and strong-willed leader who is unselfish enough to secure victory and has the integrity, charisma, and courage to mobilize people for the sustenance of such victory.

Despite his departure from the LP, Okonkwo maintains that he must press on in his vision of a greater Nigeria founded on equity, justice, and fairness.

Of recent interest have been his (various) criticisms of the national working committee of the LP, chaired by Julius Abure. In June 2024, he referred to the LP as “a secret society led by clowns,” pointing out that he may have finally had enough of the party.

In a statement on his X handle, he said on Saturday that recent happenings within the LP had given him an inspiration to chart a new course for his political journey.

“I have decided to continue the political journey into the great Nigeria of our vision without Peter Obi. I am always 100% loyal to a leader wherever I am working or following the leader. At any time I have doubts and can no longer offer 100% loyalty to him, I will respectfully let him know.”

Okonkwo explained further that he could no longer assure his commitment to Obi’s future ambition and needed to make his decision known to the public.

He declared publicly his intention to go back for consultations and negotiations with like-minded people on what will be the next step in this journey. Noticeably, he said it is not going to be joining APC or PDP for now but consolidating Labour Party.

“We need to have a solid political party with a grassroots base to be able to wrestle power from these kakistocrats and kleptocrats.

We, therefore, need a leader who will be in a position to build such a party of integrity and character from the grassroots, because after all, the majority of people that would populate a government proceed from the political party of the leader,” Okonkwo concluded.

  • Protest: Shehu Sani Reveals Only Way Organisers Will Submit Details To Police

Protest: Shehu Sani Reveals Only Way Organisers Will Submit Details To Police

Former Nigerian Senator and activist, Shehu Sani has said the organisers of the planned August 1-10 hardship protest will submit their details to the Nigeria Police Force when they have been hypnotized or charmed.

Sani disclosed this in a statement on his X account on Saturday in reaction to the condition given by Nigeria Police to intended protesters.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun told the planners of the August 1–10 protests to submit their details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.

The IGP’s comment comes after a human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, standing as solicitor for the planned protesters, requested that the police and Department of State Services, DSS, provide security.

Reacting to the development, Sani who led protests during the Military era in Nigeria, stressed that it is only when protesters have been charmed that they will provide their details to the police.

“The only way a protester can submit his name and address to the police is when he is charmed or ‘jazzed’ by a priest or a native doctor”, he said.

DAILY POST reports that the planned August 1 protest had been a subject of debate in Nigeria’s public space.

The organizers of the protest gave the worsening economic hardship as justification for their agitation.

Denilson Igwe Alleges Mark Angel Withheld Skit Earnings from Emmanuella – Shares Details

Mark Angel Accused of Hoarding Skit Earnings from Emmanuella, Denilson Igwe Reveals Shocking Details.

Denilson Igwe, the co-founder of the generally acclaimed Mark Angel Comedy, has made a very grave allegation against his partner, Mark Angel, for hoarding fat gains from their skits and giving them, Igwe and child actor, Emmanuella, only a minute fraction of the money.

Mark Angel’s comedy had gathered a lot of traction in 2014, with just three members – two men and a minor, Emmanuella. On a recent guest appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Igwe let it be known that he had started the comedy group as Mark Angel handled their social media accounts.

Igwe also went ahead to say that Mark Angel did some commercialization of their social media sites, only to keep the lion’s share for himself and pay off small revenues to Emmanuella every month.

“I was the one that started Mark Angel Comedy. Mark was the elder brother of the house, working as a security guard in Port Harcourt, while I was a cameraman to a man named Ifeanyi,” Igwe shared. “I took his camera, and in our free time, we would make those comedies. Mark created a Facebook page, and I didn’t even know when it got monetized. Suddenly, in 2014, he bought a car and said it was a gift.”

He continued, “By that time, I hadn’t received any money from him. He would be paying Emmanuella N20K monthly. In 2016, he gave me N50K and said the comedy wasn’t fetching money, while we are making $160,000. If you talk about him, either you die or have an accident.”

These revelations have caused fans and lovers of Mark Angel Comedy massive shock, with many demanding an explanation into the managerial and sharing structure within the group. These allegations could deal a major blow to the reputation and probably the inner workings of one of Nigeria’s most beloved comedy brands if found to be true.

Mark Angel has not responded to the said accusations, and the world is yearning for his own side of the story.

The APC State chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kana Zuru, in his happy mood, welcomed the defectors and their teeming supporters at the rally. Former Governor Saidu Dakingari, who was also the Director-General of APC’s campaign committee during the last governorship election in the state, urged the electorate to come out en masse to vote for APC during the forthcoming local government elections. He showered kudos on Governor Idris for delivering the dividends of democracy to the good people of Kebbi State.

During the campaign rally, the Governor had actually expressed his appreciation and acknowledgement for the rousing reception by party supporters, including the people of his state. He reassured them that his administration was irrevocably committed to promoting economic development and unity within Kebbi State.

“Overwhelmed by the mammoth crowd that turned out for this campaign rally, I want you to vote for APC during the local government elections,” Governor Idris said again for the growth and prosperity of the state.

FG Beefs Up Security at Borders Ahead of Planned Nationwide Protests

The Federal Government has stepped up security around all the nation’s borders against the mass nationwide protests slated to begin on August 1st and aimed at the current state of bad governance.

It was gathered that the Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has issued a directive for heightened surveillance and vigilance across the nation’s borders to all Zonal Heads, State Command Comptrollers, and Divisional Immigration Officers.

The increased security measure, according to the Service Spokesman, DCI Kenneth Udo, will forestall foreign elements who may gain access into the country with the view to joining the protest.

The Immigration Service has, therefore, suspended all leave applications and charged officers to exhibit a high level of professionalism and patriotism in discharge of their duties.

  • People Are Not Patronising Us Again – Yam Sellers Lament As Price Increase Affects Sales

     Yam Sellers

The many yam sellers Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja are currently lamenting low sales brought on by price increase.

Nigerians have been complaining about the inflation and how they’ve been forced to forego most necessities.

Recently, people have been lamenting about the price of yams, plantain, and other food items, with even Nollywood actors crying out about the exorbitant prices of food.

To compound issues, there was confusion last week at the Bakin Dogo food market in Kaduna North Local Government Area, Kaduna State, as 100 tubers of old yam sold for N1 million at wholesale.

Now, Abuja yam sellers are complaining that they are unable to make sales because customers cannot afford their goods.

Blessing Timothy, a yam seller in the Masaka market, called on the federal and state governments to regulate the constant price increase of foodstuff to minimise the sufferings of Nigerians.

She also appealed to the government at all levels to provide farmers with modern farm inputs while ensuring the timely distribution of fertilisers to boost food production nationwide.

Ms Timothy said five tubers of yam now sell for between N15,000 and N30,000, depending on the sizes.

Hannah Duke, another yam seller in Mararaba, said the increase in the price of yam had affected her business, adding that she was gradually losing her capital.

According to her, most farmers don’t go to farms anymore because of insecurity. Those who managed to plant will pay the gunmen to be able to harvest—the cost of transportation and pesticides.

“All these go to the cost of production, and in the end, the farmers need to increase prices to make ends meet,’’ she said.

Ms Duke said the yam business was no longer profitable, making it difficult for people to buy yam.

“Sometimes we are forced to cut yams into pieces to sell; we sell small slices of yam between N1,000 and N2,000, depending on the size. We are appealing to the government to come to our aid,’’ she said.

Josephine Ejeh, another seller in Mararaba, expressed her frustration and said yam was now beyond the reach of the ordinary man.

“We don’t know where to start from. Last year, we sold a bundle of yams (five pieces) for N3,000, and now we are selling between N15,000 and N30,000, depending on the size.

“People are not patronising us again. I’ve been here since morning, and I have not sold anything. Everyone is complaining, and it is not our fault either.”
