This marks Sanusi’s first appointment since his reinstatement, despite resistance from the dethroned 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero.

During the appointment ceremony, Emir Sanusi urged the new Ward Head to promote peaceful coexistence and contribute to the overall development of the state.

As Sanusi consolidates his position, numerous district heads and delegations from religious and market groups have visited the palace to pledge their allegiance.

These delegations include the Ansarulddeen Tijjanniya sect and traders from Kano’s popular textile (Kantin Kwari) and commodities (Singer) markets.

Sanusi was reinstalled as the 16th Emir of Kano last Thursday after the State Assembly and Governor Abba Yusuf repealed the Kano State Emirates Councils (Repealed) Bill 2024 and enacted it into law.

Shortly after Sanusi’s reinstatement, dethroned Emir Bayero returned to Kano, resulting in a legal stalemate that will be resolved in court.

The attack occurred at Obikabia junction, Ogbor Hill, Aba, with initial reports indicating that the soldiers were caught off guard, leading to their deaths. The identities of the assailants remain unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet.

    Response and Current Status

The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, and details are still emerging. The tragic event has heightened tensions in the region, which is observing a sit-at-home day declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to honor the fallen heroes and heroines of the Biafra War.

‘It Wasn’t An Ordinary Political Crisis’ – Fubara On Rift With Wike

Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has disclosed that his issue with former governor Nyesom Wike was not an “ordinary political crisis.”

Fubara said he encountered a crisis three months after assuming office as governor.

The governor and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, have been at loggerheads over the political structure of the state.

Despite interventions from President Bola Tinubu, the cold war between the duo had continued.

However, speaking while presenting his scorecard of his administration’s one year in office yesterday in Port Harcourt, Fubara declared that the worst is over.

Fubara also disclosed that his administration inherited 34 uncompleted projects worth about N225.279 billion from Wike.

He said the projects are spread across 13 local government areas of the State.

According to Fubara: “We started this journey with a bang. We were focused. We were determined to make the change we promised with a sense of urgency.

“But then, we suddenly found ourselves in the cesspit of crisis barely three months into our tenure. It was not just an ordinary political crisis. It was a vicious existential crisis.

“But thank goodness, the worst is over. We have successfully defended our rights and opportunity to govern our state and advance its progress in freedom, and we will continue to prevail.”

High Court Issues Interlocutory Injunction Against Faction of Lawmakers in Rivers State.

Port Harcourt – The State High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has issued an interlocutory injunction preventing a faction of lawmakers led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule from sitting and parading themselves as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. This faction is known for its allegiance to former governor and current FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.

Delta Government Orders Over 200 Doctors, Nurses to Refund Their Salaries, See Details

The injunction was granted by Justice C.N. Wali in response to a lawsuit filed by pro-Governor Siminilayi Fubara lawmakers, led by their Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, alongside Sokari Goodboy and Orubienimigha Timothy. The lawsuit names 25 lawmakers as the primary defendants and includes the Governor of Rivers State, the Attorney-General, and the Chief Judge as the 26th to 28th defendants.

    Background

On May 10th, the court had previously issued a similar ex-parte order, barring the governor, attorney-general, and chief judge from interacting with the affected lawmakers. The latest interlocutory injunction reinforces the earlier order and sets a new court date for July 1st, 2024, for further proceedings.

    Court’s Ruling

    Justice Wali’s ruling states:

“An order of interlocutory injunction is granted restraining the 1st to 25th defendants from parading and holding out themselves as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and/or meeting/sitting at the Auditorium of the House of Assembly Quarters located at off Aba Road Port Harcourt or at any other place whatsoever to purport to carry out the legislative business of the Rivers State House of Assembly, their legislative seats having been declared vacant pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Four Nigerian Soldiers Killed in Ambush in Aba ( Video)

An order of interlocutory injunction is hereby made restraining the 26th to 28th defendants from dealing with, interfacing, accepting any resolutions, bills and/or however interacting with the 1st to 25th defendants in their purported capacities as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly their legislative seats having been declared vacant with effect from 13th December, 2023 pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.”

    Implications

This ruling effectively prevents the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike from conducting any legislative activities or presenting themselves as legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly until the substantive suit is resolved. The court’s decision aims to maintain the status quo and prevent further escalation of the political conflict within the state’s legislative body.

The case will be revisited on July 1st, 2024, for further legal proceedings, where the court will continue to deliberate on the substantive issues of the suit.

The interlocutory injunction underscores the ongoing political tensions within Rivers State, highlighting the clash between factions loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike and the current administration under Governor Siminilayi Fubara. As the legal battle continues, the court’s decision will play a crucial role in determining the future composition and operations of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Delta State Government Orders Absentee Health Workers to Refund Salaries.

Asaba, Delta State – The Delta State Government has mandated over 200 absentee doctors and nurses to refund their salaries following an extensive audit of the state’s health institutions. This move, announced by the State Health Commissioner, Dr. Joseph Onojame, aims to address and rectify inefficiencies within the health sector.

Speaking to reporters in Asaba, Dr. Onojame disclosed that the audit uncovered a significant number of ghost workers, particularly at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Oghara. He emphasized that the administration, under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is committed to sanitizing the health sector.

“In our thorough investigation, we discovered that many health professionals had left their positions, often moving abroad, yet they remained on the payroll,” Dr. Onojame explained. “As a result, we have taken steps to remove them from the payroll to stop this financial drain.”

The audit revealed that the state had lost about fifty percent of its doctors and nurses due to emigration over the past few years. The removal of these ghost workers is seen as a critical measure to curb unnecessary expenditures and improve the allocation of resources.

In addition to addressing absenteeism, the Delta State Government is also tackling corruption within the Department of Nursing. Allegations of examination malpractice, admission racketeering, and corrupt practices have plagued the department. Dr. Onojame noted that steps have been taken to refund illegally collected building levies from students and to discipline staff involved in unethical practices.

“There was a lecturer who collected money in exchange for grades; such individuals will face severe consequences,” Dr. Onojame stated. “We are eliminating practices like ‘pay for score,’ ensuring that all nursing students must study to pass their exams.”

The State Chairman of the National Association of Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Philomena Onokpuvie, has expressed support for these reforms. She commended the government’s efforts to address the challenges in the health sector and emphasized the need for collaboration between the government, health professionals, and administrators to achieve sustainable improvements.

As Delta State moves forward with these reforms, the focus remains on creating a transparent, efficient, and accountable health sector that can better serve its residents.

Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki Denies Allegations of Priest’s Wedding

In response to circulating rumors, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State has issued a statement refuting claims that one of its priests recently wedded his lover in the state.

The report, which surfaced on social media, alleged that a Catholic priest named Jude Obasi tied the knot with his partner on May 25th in Abakaliki, the state capital. The purported wedding was said to have taken place at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Abakaliki, with a photograph circulating online showing the priest and his supposed bride in wedding attire.

However, the Diocesan Chancellor, Matthew Opoke, has dismissed the claims, stating that there is no priest by the name of Jude Obasi within the diocese. Furthermore, he emphasized that the individual in the viral photograph does not resemble any priest known to the diocese. Additionally, Opoke clarified that there is no church named Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Abakaliki, and no such event occurred in the area during the specified period.

Opoke attributed the misinformation to a possible attempt by a blogger to garner increased traffic on their social media platforms. He asserted that the publication in question is false.

Subsequent investigations by PREMIUM TIMES revealed that the photograph accompanying the report originated from an unrelated incident in Kenya in October 2023. The image depicts a Kenyan Catholic priest named Edwin Gathang’i Waiguru, who married his longtime friend, Margaret Wanjira Githui. Waiguru had reportedly joined a Roman Catholic splinter group known as the Catholic Charismatic Church.

Residents of Afikpo North Local Government Area corroborated the diocese’s statement, affirming that no such event occurred in the area. An independent journalist from the region also confirmed the absence of any incident resembling the alleged wedding.

The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has denied the reports of a priest’s wedding, labeling them as false and misleading.

South Africa Early Results from Pivotal Election

The 2024 South African General Election

The 2024 general election in South Africa has been a highly anticipated event, marking a crucial juncture in the nation’s political journey. This election is significant not only for its potential to reshape the political landscape but also for the pivotal issues at stake, including corruption, crime, and unemployment. As South Africans cast their votes, the country stands at a crossroads, with the outcome poised to influence its future direction substantially.

    Early Election Results and Analysis

As early results trickle in from South Africa’s closely contested general election, it is becoming increasingly clear that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is facing one of its toughest challenges since it first came to power in 1994. With 27% of voting districts counted, the ANC leads with 43% of the vote. This is followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 25%, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 9%, and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) of former President Jacob Zuma at 8%. These early figures suggest that the ANC may be at risk of losing its parliamentary majority, necessitating the formation of a coalition government.

    The African National Congress (ANC)

Historically, the ANC has dominated South African politics, but the 2024 election results indicate a significant shift. With a projected final vote share around 42%, down from 57% in 2019, the ANC’s grip on power appears to be weakening. This decline is attributed to growing public dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of corruption, crime, and economic issues. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership is particularly under scrutiny, with potential internal party pressures for him to resign if the vote share falls below 45%.

    Opposition Parties Performance

The opposition parties have shown a strong performance in this election, reflecting a desire for change among the electorate. The Democratic Alliance (DA), advocating for liberal economic policies, has secured 25% of the vote, positioning itself as a formidable challenger. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), known for their radical economic policies, have garnered 9%, while the newly formed MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, has captured 8% of the vote. The rise of the MK Party, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, highlights Zuma’s enduring influence and the fragmentation within the ANC’s traditional voter base.

    Potential Coalitions and Their Implications

With the ANC likely needing a coalition to secure a majority in parliament, the choice of coalition partners will significantly influence South Africa’s political and economic direction. Potential partners include the EFF and the MK Party, both of which support increased state intervention and nationalization. The DA, on the other hand, advocates for more liberal economic policies. The formation of a coalition will be a complex negotiation, balancing diverse political agendas and policy priorities.

Impact of Jacob Zuma and the MK Party

Jacob Zuma’s departure from the ANC to form the MK Party has been a game-changer in this election. Despite his legal troubles and a contempt of court conviction barring him from running for parliament, Zuma’s leadership has proven influential. The MK Party’s strong performance in KwaZulu-Natal, where it leads with 43% of the vote compared to the ANC’s 21%, underscores the deep divisions within the ANC and the appeal of Zuma’s populist rhetoric.

    President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Political Future

The election results have placed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s political future in jeopardy. If the ANC’s vote share falls below 45%, Ramaphosa may face pressure from within his party to step down. Deputy President Paul Mashatile is seen as a potential successor, particularly if the EFF and MK Party demand Ramaphosa’s resignation as a condition for coalition support. This internal power struggle could have significant implications for the stability and direction of the ANC.

    Regional Analysis of Election Results

The regional breakdown of the election results provides further insights into the shifting political landscape. In Gauteng, South Africa’s economic hub, the ANC holds 36% of the vote, closely followed by the DA at 29%. In KwaZulu-Natal, the MK Party’s dominance highlights the regional variation in voter preferences and the impact of local issues on the election outcome.

    Voter Turnout and Demographics

High voter turnout has been a notable feature of this election, reminiscent of the historic 1994 vote. Long queues and extended polling hours indicate a high level of public engagement. Young voters, in particular, have played a crucial role, largely voting against the ANC and reflecting a desire for change. This demographic shift suggests a potential realignment of political loyalties in the future.

    Public Sentiment and Voter Experiences

Voter experiences and public sentiment provide a deeper understanding of the election dynamics. Many voters expressed frustration over persistent issues such as corruption and unemployment. Sifiso Buthelezi, voting in Johannesburg, highlighted ongoing corruption despite the freedom gained since 1994. Ayanda Hlekwane, a member of the “born-free” generation, expressed frustration over unemployment but remained hopeful for change. Meanwhile, older voters like Elayne Dykman emphasized the importance of voting and hoped younger generations appreciated their democratic rights.

    Media and International Reactions

The election has attracted significant media attention, both locally and internationally. The respected Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and News24 have been closely monitoring the results, projecting the ANC’s final vote share. International observers and key global players are also watching the developments closely, with statements and reactions expected as the final results are announced.

Challenges and Controversies in the South Africa election results

Like any major election, the 2024 South African general election has not been without its challenges and controversies. Allegations of irregularities, logistical issues, and security concerns have been reported. The Electoral Commission has been working to address these issues, ensuring the integrity of the election process. Public protests and legal challenges may arise as the final results are confirmed.

Future Political Landscape of South Africa

The 2024 election results will have far-reaching implications for South Africa’s political landscape. The potential for coalition governments, the rise of new political forces, and the ongoing challenges facing the ANC all point to a period of significant change. Future policies and governance will be shaped by the outcomes of this pivotal election, setting the stage for the next chapter in South Africa’s democratic journey.

‘Nigeria We Hail Thee’: New National Anthem Prayer Against Oppression – Sen Umeh

Anambra Central Senator, Victor Umeh on Thursday said the new National Anthem, ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ would help build a just nation

Umeh said the new national anthem is a prayer to God to help build a nation where nobody will be oppressed.

Featuring on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the lawmaker said reverting to the old National Anthem would not hurt any Nigerian.

According to Umeh: “Reverting to the old National Anthem is not hurting anybody; we can’t leave things that are not important and begin to debate things about a molehill.

“We have had our national anthem for 46 years “Arise O Compatriots,” so that we are going back to the one that is critical to the life of our nation is not bad.

“Stanza three of the new anthem which spoke about helping those oppressed is very critical to our nation today, those who made the old National Anthem knew over time that there must be the tendency of people dominating others and oppress them along the line, so we put it as a prayer to God to help us build a just nation where no man is oppressed, many people, minorities are oppressed in Nigeria today.”

New National Anthem Does Not Change Price Of Food’ – Experts Knock Tinubu

Experts have criticized President Bola Tinubu over the new national anthem, saying the national anthem does not change the price of food.

Political analysts, Jideofor Adibe and Sani Yabagi issued the criticism while speaking on the first anniversary of President Tinubu in an interview on Channels Television monitored by DAILY POST.

Recall that President Tinubu on Wednesday, signed the new national anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ into law in the early hours of Wednesday.

The signing of the bill into law ensured that Nigeria jettisoned ‘Arise, O Compatriots’ as its national anthem.

The experts quizzed the significance of changing the national anthem at this critical time, describing it as “shadowboxing”.

Adobe said, “That for me is shadow boxing. Is that the problem? I think they are leaving the substance to chase the shadow. What does it change? Does it change the price of food in the market?”

While speaking on the development, Yabagi said he believes the issue of the national anthem was introduced as a kind of relief for Nigerians for all that is happening with the economy among others.

He said, “I think it is a way of giving us a kind of breather. It is a way of bringing out some substance in the whole thing that is called Nigeria so that we will now begin to appreciate who we are.”

He, however, expressed concern that the old national anthem the country has now reverted to was written by the colonialists, saying, “we are the pride of Africa, we shouldn’t bring sentiments or things that define us in a different way.”

LG Autonomy: Supreme Court Gives Govs 7 Days To File Defence To Nigerian Govt’s Suit

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the 36 state governors to file their respective defense to a suit instituted against them by the Federal Government seeking for full autonomy for the 774 local government in the country.

The apex court also ordered the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice to, upon receipt of the governors defense, file his reply within two days.

Justice Garba Lawal issued the order on Thursday while ruling in an application for abridgement of time argued by the AGF, Prince Lateef Fagebemi, SAN.

The AGF had prayed the court to compel the governors to file their responses within five days in view of the urgency and importance of the suit to local government autonomy.

Although the governors did not object to time abridgement, they however requested for 15 days to file defense.

Justice Lawal who led a seven-man panel of justices of the apex court, said that the decision of the court to reduce time was predicated on the national importance and urgency of the suit and the non-objection from the states of the federation.

The Supreme Court held that filing of all processes and exchanging of same must be completed withing the time and subsequently fixed June 13 for hearing of the suit.

Justice Lawal ordered that the eight states that were not in attendance at Thursday’s proceedings must be served with fresh hearing notice.

The eight state are Borno, Kano, Kogi, Niger, Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Sokoto, whose Attorneys General were absent in court despite being served with hearing notice.

APC-Led Government Giving N250,000 Grant to All Nigerians? Fact Check Reveals the Truth.

Recently, claims have surfaced online suggesting that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government is providing N250,000 empowerment grants to all Nigerians. These claims have circulated widely on social media, often linked to an image of Zainab Ahmed, the former Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning. A thorough fact-checking investigation has been conducted to verify the authenticity of these claims.

    Fact-Checking Investigation

The fact-checking platform Ejes Gist  Media Team investigated the legitimacy of this claim. Their key findings include:

Examination of the Link: Dubawa’s team found no evidence supporting the existence of a registration process or eligibility criteria for such a grant. Instead, the link redirected to a website called TGuideWeb, which provided information on obtaining visa sponsorship opportunities in the United States.

Misleading Content: The website did not depict any state-sponsored initiative. The investigation revealed that spammers and scammers often use such misleading information for fraudulent activities. Dubawa warned users to be wary of hoax websites.

Absence of Official Announcement: There has been no official announcement from President Bola Tinubu’s administration or any APC-led government regarding a N250,000 empowerment grant for all Nigerians.

    Context of the Claim

The claim’s association with Zainab Ahmed, a prominent figure in the APC administration, may have lent it credibility. However, the fact-checking process underscores the importance of verifying information from reliable sources before accepting or sharing such claims.

    Legitimate Government Initiatives

In contrast to the false claim, there are legitimate government initiatives aimed at empowering Nigerian businesses. For instance, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) recently announced a conditional grant scheme designed to empower small businesses, requiring grant recipients to employ at least one additional person.

Will It Change Price of Food? Adibe, Yabagi Analyze the New National Anthem

The return to the old Nigerian national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” has sparked significant debate among political analysts and the general public.

In a recent discussion on Channels Television’s May 29 Special programme, marking the first anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, analysts Jideofor Adibe and Sani Yabagi offered contrasting perspectives on this change. This analysis explores their viewpoints, the potential implications of the anthem change, and its broader impact on Nigerian society and politics.

    Historical Background

Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was Nigeria’s national anthem from independence in 1960 until it was replaced by “Arise, O Compatriots” in 1978. The recent decision to revert to the old anthem by President Tinubu has reignited discussions about national identity and the symbolic importance of such national symbols.

    Political Climate

This change comes at a time when Nigeria is facing numerous challenges, including economic instability, high inflation, and social unrest. These conditions have made the timing of the anthem change particularly controversial, raising questions about the government’s priorities.

    Perspectives on the Anthem Change

    Jideofor Adibe: Symbolism vs. Substance

Jideofor Adibe, a political analyst, expressed skepticism about the relevance of changing the national anthem at this juncture. He described the move as “shadowboxing,” implying that it is a distraction from more pressing issues such as the economy and food prices. Adibe’s main arguments are:

    • Misplaced Priorities: He argues that the government is focusing on symbolic changes rather than addressing substantial economic issues that affect the daily lives of Nigerians.
    • Economic Impact: Adibe questions the practical benefits of the anthem change, asking rhetorically whether it would impact the price of food or improve economic conditions.

Sani Yabagi: National Identity and Relief

Contrastingly, Sani Yabagi views the anthem change as a potential source of national morale and identity:

    • Psychological Relief: Yabagi suggests that reverting to the old anthem could provide a psychological breather for Nigerians amid economic and social challenges.
    • National Pride: He believes that the change could help Nigerians reconnect with a sense of pride and unity, albeit expressing concern about the colonial origins of the anthem and its appropriateness in representing contemporary Nigeria.

    Implications of the Anthem Change

    Economic Considerations

While the change of the national anthem is primarily symbolic, it raises questions about the government’s focus during a period of economic hardship:

    • Public Perception: The move could be perceived as out of touch with the immediate needs of the populace, potentially leading to public discontent.
    • Resource Allocation: Critics may argue that the resources and attention devoted to changing the anthem could have been better utilized in addressing economic issues.

    Cultural and Social Impact

The national anthem is a powerful symbol of national identity and unity:

    • Cultural Resonance: Returning to “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” might resonate with older generations who experienced Nigeria’s early post-independence years, fostering a sense of nostalgia and continuity.
    • Youth Engagement: Younger Nigerians, who have grown up with “Arise, O Compatriots,” might feel disconnected from the old anthem, highlighting generational divides in perceptions of national identity.

    Political Implications

Politically, the decision to change the anthem can have several ramifications:

    • Political Messaging: The anthem change could be seen as an attempt by the Tinubu administration to invoke a sense of historical continuity and legitimacy.
    • Public Opinion: Depending on public reception, the change could either bolster or undermine the administration’s credibility and popularity.

    Ethical and Philosophical Considerations

    National Symbols and Identity

National anthems are integral to a country’s identity and are often loaded with historical and emotional significance:

    • Colonial Legacy: The fact that “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was written during the colonial era raises important questions about its relevance in modern Nigeria, which seeks to forge an independent and self-defined identity.
    • Inclusive Representation: Ensuring that the national anthem reflects the diverse cultural and ethnic makeup of Nigeria is crucial for fostering national unity.

    Governance and Prioritization

The anthem change also touches on broader issues of governance and prioritization:

    • Effective Leadership: Effective leadership involves balancing symbolic actions with substantive policy measures that address the tangible needs of the population.
    • Public Trust: Maintaining public trust requires that government actions be perceived as aligned with the urgent needs and concerns of the citizenry.

The decision to revert to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” by President Bola Tinubu’s administration has sparked a robust debate about its timing, relevance, and implications. While some, like Jideofor Adibe, see it as a distraction from pressing economic issues, others, like Sani Yabagi, believe it could provide a sense of relief and national pride. Ultimately, the success of such symbolic changes depends on their ability to resonate with the populace and complement broader efforts to address Nigeria’s economic and social challenges. The anthem change serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between symbolism and substance in governance and the ongoing quest to define and strengthen national identity

CBN’s Interventions Bolster Naira on Official Market.

Interventions in the foreign exchange market by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday resulted in a significant appreciation of the naira against the dollar on the official market, according to a Bloomberg report yesterday.

Data posted on FMDQ’s website shows that the naira strengthened to ₦1,339.33 per dollar on Monday and yesterday, compared to ₦1,482.81 per dollar last Friday.

The report quoted Olaolu Boboye, an analyst at asset manager CardinalStone in Lagos, as saying: “The central bank dollar sales and OMO auction helped to strengthen the naira.”

According to the report, dollar liquidity had surged on Friday as the CBN’s sale of one-year paper attracted flows. The sale of ₦1.143 trillion ($800 million) worth of bills at a 22.49 percent yield more than doubled liquidity in the foreign exchange market to $556 million. However, that liquidity surge was not sustained into Monday, when the volume of dollars sold in the market declined to $181 million despite the central bank intervention.

Samir Gadio, head of Africa strategy at Standard Chartered Bank, noted that the central bank was selling hard currency in the range of ₦1,260 to ₦1,320 per dollar, well off the current exchange rate below ₦1,400 per dollar. The sales are taking place ahead of today’s maturity of a $1.3 billion futures contract. “The rationale may be to contain and pre-empt a potential increase in dollar demand in the coming days,” Gadio said. It is also “conceivable” that there could be another bill sale to offset the impact of the expiring contract, he added.
