We inherited Over N225 billion debt, 34 uncompleted projects from Wike – Fubara

…Fubara Swears in Commissioners, Outlines Achievements Amid Crisis

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently swore in new commissioners while addressing the state’s political and developmental landscape. During a ceremony marking the first anniversary of his administration in Port Harcourt on May 29, Fubara revealed that his government inherited 34 uncompleted projects from his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, valued at over N225.28 billion across 13 local government areas.

WAEC Recruitment 2024 Commenced – Apply Now, See Deadline

Despite these challenges, Fubara announced the commencement of nine new road projects, valued at N534.332 billion, under his administration. He described the ongoing political crisis in the state as a “vicious war” against his leadership but asserted that the worst of it is over. We have successfully defended our rights and opportunity to govern our state and advance its progress in freedom,” he stated.

In presenting his administration’s scorecard, Fubara emphasized his commitment to economic growth, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and agriculture. “We started this journey with a bang. We were focused and determined to make the change we promised with a sense of urgency,” he said. Fubara highlighted his administration’s efforts to stabilize the state’s economy, which he claimed was on a declining trajectory despite its growth potential.

To address economic challenges, Fubara established an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)/Investment Advisory Committee, which he chairs, leading to a significant increase in the state’s revenue. “Our internally generated revenue witnessed an astronomical increase from N12 billion to between N17 billion in off-peak periods and N28 billion during the peak months,” Fubara reported.

The governor also emphasized his administration’s business-friendly policies, which have attracted both local and international investors. “We have kept our taxes low, frozen the imposition of taxes on small businesses, and increased the ease of doing business by eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks,” he noted.

Fubara highlighted the creation of an N4 billion matching fund with the Bank of Industry (BOI) to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative has seen over 3,000 applications for business loans at a single-digit interest rate and a repayment period of up to five years.

On infrastructure, Fubara reassured that his administration did not abandon the uncompleted projects inherited from the previous government. Twelve of those projects have been completed and put to use, while construction work is ongoing on the others,” he confirmed.

Fubara concluded his address by reaffirming his dedication to prioritizing the interests of Rivers State and ensuring that the people receive the dividends of democracy and good governance. “I am pleased to present our scorecard for the first year we have been in office, showing significant achievements despite unprecedented challenges,” he stated.

Kano lawmakers, stakeholders demand immediate return of sacked emirs

Kano South Stakeholders Urge Governor Yusuf to Reinstate Emirs.

Stakeholders from the Kano South geopolitical district, comprising Gaya, Rano, and Karaye emirates, have called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to urgently reinstate their emirs. In a resolution signed by 103 stakeholders from these three emirates, they urged the state government and House of Assembly to adhere to the directives of the Federal High Court and restore the five emirates to prevent further crisis.

The resolution’s signatories include notable figures such as Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Sen. Mas’ud El-Jibrin, Hon. Musa Salihu, Dr. Ali Musa Burun-Burun, Sen. Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, Prof. Shehu Musa, Prof. Andu Salihu Kabiya, and Major Gen. AT Jibrin (Rtd), among others.

Speaking at a press conference in Kano, the group’s spokesperson, Hon. Musa Salisu, highlighted the historical significance and the developmental role of the three new emirates in Kano South, which were abolished by Governor Yusuf. Salisu noted that the absence of tertiary healthcare and educational institutions had previously stunted human progress and development in these emirates.

“Before their first restoration and creation, the absence of tertiary healthcare and educational institutions in these emirates had stalled human progress and development,” Salisu stated. He emphasized that the emirates’ administrative control had hindered their progress due to marginalization, concentrating social amenities and law enforcement resources in Kano city alone.

The stakeholders expressed their disappointment with the State Assembly’s decision to amend the emirate law and Governor Yusuf’s swift assent, viewing it as a major setback. “This move not only stripped us of our heritage and potential for growth but also threatened to reverse the positive trajectory that had been set in motion by the previous administration,” Salisu added.

The stakeholders praised the former Governor Umar Ganduje’s efforts in upgrading the new emirates, which they claim led to significant urban and infrastructural development. “The actions taken by the previous administration, based on extensive consultations and due process, reflect a commitment to the well-being and progress of the emirates,” Salisu emphasized.

They called the removal of their emirs an injustice that must be corrected and thanked the judiciary and security agencies for their intervention that temporarily halted the regressive legislation.

The decision has been met with widespread disapproval from many Nigerians, who argue that the move is unnecessary and diversionary. Many have expressed disappointment and frustration with the government’s priorities, saying that the focus should be on addressing the economic challenges and improving the lives of ordinary citizens, rather than revisiting a national symbol. The move is seen as a nostalgic gesture that does not address the pressing needs of the nation.

With a target of reaching 250,000 households annually over the next four years, the program aims to address the reliance on solid fuels such as firewood, kerosene, and charcoal, which contribute to deforestation, environmental degradation, and health hazards.

During the pilot phase of the program, over 1,000 women from various area councils in Abuja received gas cylinders, with plans to extend the distribution to other states in the near future.

The initiative is funded by the private sector, with sponsors from various players in the oil and gas sector. The distribution includes not only the free provision of gas cylinders but also training on the usage of cooking gas and the provision of associated equipment.

Two Aides to Tinubu Clash Over President’s Address to National Assembly

Tinubu’s Aides Clash Over Presidential Address to National Assembly

A disagreement has erupted between two of President Bola Tinubu’s aides, Bayo Onanuga and Ajuri Ngelale, over whether the president will address the National Assembly on Wednesday, May 29.

Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential media aide, stated that President Tinubu has no plans to address the National Assembly, describing the announcement as “false and unauthorized.” According to Ngelale, the Office of the President was not involved in planning the event.

On the other hand, Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, had earlier announced that President Tinubu would address a joint session of the National Assembly to commemorate 25 years of democratic rule in Nigeria.

The presidency has since clarified that President Tinubu will not be addressing the National Assembly on Wednesday, May 29, contradicting Onanuga’s earlier statement.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Ngelale emphasized that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to delivering good governance and has inaugurated strategic projects across the country. He added that more transformative projects will be inaugurated for the benefit of all Nigerians.

This development highlights a apparent rift between the two aides, causing confusion and uncertainty among Nigerians. The presidency’s clarification has put the matter to rest, but the public disagreement between Onanuga and Ajuri has raised questions about the internal workings of the presidency.

Wale Edun highlighted that the revamping of these programmes is crucial to their success and sustainability. A special presidential panel, chaired by Edun, has been established to review and audit the financial framework and policy guidelines of the social investment programmes.

    Background of Suspension

On June 12, 2023, President Tinubu suspended the programmes under the National Social Investment Programme Agency for six weeks to investigate allegations of mismanagement. The suspension also included Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, who was later suspended on January 8, 2024, due to supervisory responsibilities over the programmes.

    Legislative Support for Resumption

On March 13, the House of Representatives directed the federal government to resume implementing the social investment initiatives. This legislative support underscores the importance of these programmes in providing much-needed support to Nigeria’s poor and vulnerable populations.

    Moving Forward

The reinstatement of these programmes marks a significant step in President Tinubu’s administration, aiming to deliver relief and support to millions of Nigerians. As the government moves forward with these initiatives, it remains committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective delivery of services.

Economic Hardship: Many Nigerians Can No Longer Afford Beer – Nigerian Breweries CEO

Nigerian Brewers Post N170bn Loss Due to Weaker Naira and Rate Hikes

The listed brewers in Nigeria posted a combined loss of N169.7 billion in the first three months of 2024, according to a BusinessDay analysis of their financial statements. This significant loss contrasts sharply with Q1 of the previous year, where three of the breweries reported a total loss of N54.3 billion, while Guinness Nigeria managed to post a profit of N1.84 billion.

    Factors Behind the Losses

Rising Interest Rates and Naira Devaluation

The financial troubles of Champion Breweries Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Guinness Nigeria Plc can be attributed to rising interest rates and the further devaluation of the naira. These economic challenges have led to increased production costs and exacerbated the cost-of-doing-business crisis in Nigeria.

“The recent naira devaluation has significantly impaired value for businesses with huge dollar exposures, amid the protracted decline in purchasing power in the Nigerian economy,” said Ayodeji Ajilore, an investment research analyst with ARM.

    Foreign Exchange Losses

    • International Breweries: Recorded a foreign exchange loss of N162.2 billion in Q1 from an FX gain of N1.22 billion in the previous year.
    • Nigerian Breweries: FX loss widened to N72.85 billion from N14.64 billion.
    • Guinness Nigeria: FX loss of N37.06 billion, up from N4.29 billion.
    • Champion Breweries: Recorded an FX loss of N0.74 billion, whereas no FX loss was recorded in the same period of the previous year.

Nosike Nwajide, team lead of the research arm at Agusto & Co, highlighted that the shift to a floating exchange rate triggered a steep depreciation of the naira, leading to major FX losses in the industry.

    Impact on the Industry

The beer industry contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economy through its domestic and international operations and its global supply chain. In 2019, the global beer industry supported a $2.2 billion GVA contribution to Nigeria’s GDP, accounting for 0.6 percent of national GDP, according to Oxford Economics.

    Decline in Consumer Spending

Experts also attribute the losses to reduced consumer spending. Femi Egbesola, national president of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, pointed out that inflation has reduced the purchasing power and disposable income of consumers, forcing them to prioritize their spending.

“At the moment, many alternatives to alcohol are also available in the market and competition is very stiff,” Egbesola noted.

Uchenna Uzo, a professor of marketing at Lagos Business School, added that household incomes are failing to keep pace with the country’s accelerating inflation, leading to shrinking wallets and low demand.

“People are not buying as much as they would before the economic conditions in Nigeria,” Uzo said. “There has also been a bit more variety in terms of different types of beers other than the traditional premium lager that customers have available to them, and there are cheaper variants, so people are willing to explore lower-quality alcoholic beverages at cheaper prices.”

    Future Outlook

The macroeconomic headwinds, including surging costs, continue to affect beer makers. As Nigeria navigates these economic challenges, it remains to be seen how the brewers will adapt and manage their financial health.

That is all for today on Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange Rate.

Tinubu’s One Year in Office: Ohanaeze Sends Powerful Message to Obi, Atiku, Kwankwaso

Ohanaeze Urges Opposition Leaders to Unite, Commends Tinubu’s First Year in Office.

In a bold move aimed at fostering unity and national development, the factional secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, has called on leaders of major opposition parties, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to set aside their political differences and work together to rebuild Nigeria.

Details Emerge as FG govt begins distribution of cooking gas to one million homes

Isiguzoro’s statement, issued on Tuesday, highlights the significant progress, development, and commitment demonstrated during the first year of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Drawing a sharp contrast with the previous eight years under Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership, Isiguzoro emphasizes the strides made under Tinubu’s presidency.

During Buhari’s tenure, Isiguzoro notes, the South-East region endured economic suppression and marginalization, resulting in heightened insecurity and economic neglect. However, under Tinubu’s leadership, there has been a noticeable shift, with increased political will and determination to address these challenges.

Two Aides to Tinubu Clash Over President’s Address to National Assembly

Isiguzoro specifically commends the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation of major federal expressways in the South-East, spearheaded by Senator David Umahi, which has spurred economic activity and infrastructure development in the region.

While acknowledging Senator Umahi’s exemplary performance as Minister of Works, Isiguzoro calls on President Tinubu to address certain issues affecting the Igbo community. These include halting the unnecessary demolition of Igbo properties in Lagos, releasing Nnamdi Kanu, and implementing trade policies that foster friendly relations and economic growth.

Furthermore, Ohanaeze urges the reopening of the Calabar Seaport, citing its potential to boost economic activity, particularly in conjunction with the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Super Highway.

The message from Ohanaeze underscores the importance of unity and collaboration among political leaders for the collective progress and prosperity of Nigeria, while also advocating for specific measures to address the concerns of marginalized communities.

Nigeria’s Economy Growing Perfectly – Tinubu’s Govt Declares

Nigerian Economy Records 2.99% Growth in Q1 2024 under Tinubu Administration

Abuja, May 27 – Nigeria’s economy has shown notable growth in the first quarter of 2024, with a 2.99% increase, surpassing the 2.3% growth rate recorded in the same period last year.

This was revealed by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, during a performance review marking the first year of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Minister Edun attributed this growth to the effectiveness of President Tinubu’s economic policies. He highlighted that the agricultural sector, a critical component of Nigeria’s economy, is experiencing marginal growth.

This growth is expected to play a crucial role in combating inflation, particularly with a favorable wet season harvest anticipated to stabilize food prices.

“This growth in agriculture provides the monetary authority with the leverage needed to stabilize foreign exchange (FX) rates,” Edun stated. “By continuing on this path and intensifying our efforts, we are on track to lift many Nigerians out of poverty.”

Furthermore, Edun noted significant improvements in revenue collection, which have enabled the government to service its debts without relying on the Central Bank’s Ways and Means advances. This marks a shift towards better fiscal discipline and reduced inflationary pressures.

Negotiations for Nigerian Workers’ New Minimum Wage Hit Major Roadblock.

Abuja, May 28 – The ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers have hit another significant roadblock just days before the May 31 deadline. Labour leaders have once again rejected the federal government’s latest proposal for a new minimum wage.

During a meeting held on Tuesday, May 28, the organized labour, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), turned down the government’s offer of ₦60,000. This follows a series of rejections of previous proposals of ₦48,000, ₦54,000, and ₦57,000 by the labour leaders.

Meanwhile, the organized labour has slightly adjusted its previous demand, lowering it from ₦497,000 to ₦494,000. This adjustment comes after an initial proposal of ₦615,000 was reduced in earlier negotiations.

A member of the Tripartite Committee involved in the negotiations revealed these updates during the ongoing discussions. Despite efforts to reach a consensus, the committee remains deadlocked, raising concerns about meeting the imminent deadline.

Labour unions have been mobilizing their members for potential nationwide protests if the federal government fails to agree on a new minimum wage by the May 31 deadline. The situation underscores the urgent need for resolution to avoid further industrial actions and unrest.
