The newly dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero and four others were on Monday, restrained by the Kano State High Court, from parading themselves as monarchs in the state.

Justice Aisha Adamu Aliyu granted the order after an ex parte motion was filed by the state government on Monday, May 27, 2024.

The judge also stoppped all the dethroned Emirs from acting in their official capacity and asked them to immediately leave their palaces.

The court also ordered the Commissioner of Police in Kano to take over the palace presently occupied by Ado Bayero and immediately evict the former Emir.

The court ruling reads: “That an order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th & 5th Defendants either by themselves, servants, privies, and or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other person from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the Applicants.

  • I Did It To Gain Followers – Man Who Defamed Businessman Emoney Says (Video)

A 24-year-old man, Stanley Okoruwa, who was arrested for defaming businessman, Emeka Okonkwo aka E-money, has stated that he did it to grow his page.

Last week, the suspect was arrested for making a video where he alleged that the E-money had a secret relationship with the widow of late actor, Junior Pope.

While being paraded, the suspect who is from Edo state, claimed he did it as a ‘’cruise” and to gain followers.

‘’I made a video about Sir E-Money and I said a lot of things that weren’t true. I said something regarding a video I saw online of a woman saying Emoney is responsible for everything that has taken place in regard to Jnr Pope’s matter. I said something similar to it and I also said Sir Emoney is having an affair with Jnr Pope’s wife.

I made that video out of trying to grow my page. I wasn’t having any other bad intention to spoil Sir E-Money’s name. I didn’t even know the video would go to that extent. I know the video was wrong but I did not know it would go to that extent. Everything in that video is not true. There was nothing like that. I was trying to go popular or maybe have the opportunity to see Sir E-Money one-on-one but I didn’t know it was going to escalate to this extent”

He said his Facebook page is not monetized and did not make any money from it.

The suspect also apologised to the businessman and asked for his forgiveness.

  • Presidency Reacts to Labour’s N497k New Minimum Wage Demand

Presidency Reacts to Labour’s N497k New Minimum Wage Demand

The presidency has responded to the recent proposal by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for a new minimum wage of N497,000 for workers, labeling it as unrealistic. Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, urged labour leaders to be more serious and realistic with their demands.

Onanuga emphasized the importance of considering available resources when determining the new minimum wage. He pointed out the over-bloated civil service structure at both state and federal levels as a significant factor in this discussion.

Tinubu’s First Year in Office: Chaotic Policy Implementation Plunges Nigerians into Economic Hardship

“Well, it’s very simple. I think the demand is outrageous. If you ask Mr. Ajaero or our brother who is the President of the TUC, Osifo, how much do they pay their drivers or their lowest-paid workers, how much do they pay their cleaners? Can they pay them N500,000, can they pay them N615,000? It’s unrealistic,” Onanuga told Vanguard.

He continued: “We have a bloated civil service at all levels. Government is keeping them as a social service because it doesn’t have other jobs for them. The last time someone gave the census of the federal civil servants, they are said to be about 50,000. I am not talking about the police, army, or those employed by some agencies. I am talking about the hardcore civil servants.

“If you visit the Federal Secretariat, you will see them milling around. You do not expect much productivity from them. Yet these are people Ajaero wants the Federal Government to pay N615,000.

“At the moment, what the government is spending on recurrent expenditure is too high. I don’t foresee any government, either the federal, state, or local government council, spending all its money just to pay workers.

“There are still people who are self-employed, people who are doing their own businesses, to whom the government has a responsibility to do roads, provide healthcare, provide education, and others. So, Labour should be realistic.

“From what I have seen so far, they are unserious, unrealistic with their outlandish demand. I know that what the President has been promising is not just a minimum wage but a living wage.

List of minimum wage in African countries in Dollars

“It’s too early now to say this is what the government will agree to. But I think they are still negotiating. In the coming weeks, they will agree on a figure and then announce it to the Nigerian people.

“Then we have to be worried whether the states have the earning power to pay whatever the minimum wage agreed on because some states found it difficult to pay the old minimum wage of N30,000.

“I read a few days ago that Zamfara state government, which failed to pay the N30,000 current minimum wage, announced that they will pay. If some states have not paid the minimum wage announced by President Muhammadu Buhari five years ago, it is an indication that the states will also fail the new minimum wage. So labour needs to be realistic.

“In my own view, I think what labour should be talking about is how to make affordable housing available, how to reduce transport costs, how to make food cheap and affordable to our people because by the time you spend less money on food, less money on transport, education, and other things, the earning power will improve. I don’t believe in the quantum of money; it will not solve the problem.

“We have seen all the wage increases in the past. They ended up creating more frustration for the workers.”

  • Tinubu’s First Year in Office: Chaotic Policy Implementation Plunges Nigerians into Economic Hardship

Tinubu’s First Year in Office: Chaotic Policy Implementation Plunges Nigerians into Economic Hardship

For many Nigerians, the last year has been marked by renewed suffering as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eight-point agenda fails to tackle rising inflation, unemployment, and a declining Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Tinubu’s policies, initially presented with great promise, have yet to deliver the expected results, leaving the nation’s economy in turmoil.

From the outset, Tinubu’s administration set a contentious tone with the immediate removal of the fuel subsidy. On May 29, 2023, the President’s declaration, “Fuel Subsidy is Gone,” led to an instant surge in fuel prices from N260 to over N500 per litre. By April 2024, the average fuel price had soared to N702 per litre, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This drastic increase has had a ripple effect, contributing to record-high inflation rates.

Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange Rate for Today, May 28, 2024: EUR, Pound

The fuel subsidy removal, coupled with the harmonization of the foreign exchange market, saw the Naira plummet to 1339.33 per dollar, further exacerbating inflation. Headline and food inflation reached 33.69 percent and 40.53 percent, respectively, by April 2024, as reported by the NBS. Rising energy costs have compounded the economic challenges for both Nigerians and manufacturers.

In addition to fuel price hikes, Nigerians faced a significant increase in electricity tariffs. On April 3, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced a 240 percent tariff hike for Band A customers, adding to the financial strain on households.

Despite a subsequent minor reduction, the high cost of living has persisted, with prices of staple foods such as rice, beans, garri, yam, and tomatoes increasing by over 130 percent.

Monetary interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under Governor Olayemi Cardoso have also struggled to curb inflation. Interest rates were raised three times, reaching 26.25 percent in May 2024, yet inflation continued its upward trajectory. From May 2023, when headline inflation was 22.41 percent, it surged to 33.69 percent within a year, indicating a 11.28 percent increase without effective countermeasures.

President Tinubu’s eight-point agenda, unveiled by Finance Minister Wale Edun, aimed to address food security, poverty, economic growth, job creation, and security, among other issues. However, one year later, these goals remain unmet. Unemployment and underemployment rates stood at 5 percent and 12.3 percent, respectively, in the third quarter of 2023, according to the NBS.

Despite promises of economic transformation, Nigeria’s economic woes have persisted. The government’s initiatives, including plans to restart local refining and cultivate extensive farmlands, have yet to materialize fully. The agricultural sector, despite some job creation claims, continues to struggle with soaring food prices and insecurity.

In the oil and gas sector, while there was a slight increase in crude oil production, the country still battles significant challenges, including oil theft and insufficient investment realization. The Central Bank’s various policy interventions have also had limited success in stabilizing the forex market, with the Naira experiencing extreme volatility.

Experts have criticized the government’s monetary and fiscal policies as reactionary and ineffective. Gbolade Idakolo, CEO of SD & D Capital Management, rated the administration’s economic performance as below average, citing increased business costs and insufficient measures to address inflation. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, acknowledged the necessity of reforms but emphasized the need for better implementation and speed in delivering mitigating measures.

Despite the challenges, there is cautious optimism among some experts. Professor Segun Ajibola, a renowned economist, believes that with proper management and commitment, the administration can still achieve positive economic changes. However, he stresses the importance of addressing key issues such as fuel subsidy removal impacts, foreign exchange market stability, and power sector improvements.

As President Tinubu’s administration enters its second year, the focus remains on implementing effective policies to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians. The government’s ability to navigate these challenges and deliver on its promises will be crucial in shaping the nation’s economic future.

Nigerian Brewers Post N170bn Loss Due to Weaker Naira and Rate Hikes

The listed brewers in Nigeria posted a combined loss of N169.7 billion in the first three months of 2024, according to a BusinessDay analysis of their financial statements. This significant loss contrasts sharply with Q1 of the previous year, where three of the breweries reported a total loss of N54.3 billion, while Guinness Nigeria managed to post a profit of N1.84 billion.

    Factors Behind the Losses

Rising Interest Rates and Naira Devaluation

The financial troubles of Champion Breweries Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Guinness Nigeria Plc can be attributed to rising interest rates and the further devaluation of the naira. These economic challenges have led to increased production costs and exacerbated the cost-of-doing-business crisis in Nigeria.

“The recent naira devaluation has significantly impaired value for businesses with huge dollar exposures, amid the protracted decline in purchasing power in the Nigerian economy,” said Ayodeji Ajilore, an investment research analyst with ARM.

    Foreign Exchange Losses

International Breweries recorded a foreign exchange loss of N162.2 billion in Q1 from an FX gain of N1.22 billion in the previous year. Nigerian Breweries’ FX loss widened to N72.85 billion from N14.64 billion, while Guinness Nigeria had an FX loss of N37.06 billion, up from N4.28 billion. Champion Breweries recorded an FX loss of N0.74 billion, whereas no FX loss was recorded in the same period of the previous year.

Nosike Nwajide, team lead of the research arm at Agusto &Co, highlighted that the shift to a floating exchange rate triggered a steep depreciation of the naira, leading to major FX losses in the industry.

    Impact on the Industry

The beer industry contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economy through its domestic and international operations and its global supply chain. In 2019, the global beer industry supported a $2.2 billion GVA contribution to Nigeria’s GDP, accounting for 0.6 percent of national GDP, according to Oxford Economics.

    Decline in Consumer Spending

Experts also attribute the losses to reduced consumer spending. Femi Egbesola, national president of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, pointed out that inflation has reduced the purchasing power and disposable income of consumers, forcing them to prioritize their spending.

“At the moment, many alternatives to alcohol are also available in the market and competition is very stiff,” Egbesola noted.

Uchenna Uzo, a professor of marketing at Lagos Business School, added that household incomes are failing to keep pace with the country’s accelerating inflation, leading to shrinking wallets and low demand.

“People are not buying as much as they would before the economic conditions in Nigeria,” Uzo said. “There has also been a bit more variety in terms of different types of beers other than the traditional premium lager that customers have available to them, and there are cheaper variants, so people are willing to explore lower-quality alcoholic beverages at cheaper prices.”

    Future Outlook

The macroeconomic headwinds, including surging costs, continue to affect beer makers. As Nigeria navigates these economic challenges, it remains to be seen how the brewers will adapt and manage their financial health.

That is all for today on Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange Rate.

Benue State House of Assembly Repeals Lifetime Pension Law for Former Governors and Deputies.

In a significant move, the Benue State House of Assembly has repealed the law that provided lifetime pensions and other benefits for former elected governors and their deputies. This decision comes shortly after the controversial pension bill was passed by the previous assembly, which extended benefits to ex-governors and their deputies dating back to 1999.

The controversial bill was passed just days before the end of the last assembly under the leadership of Titus Uba, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was the speaker at that time.

However, during a plenary session held on Monday, May 27, 2024, the current assembly overturned the bill, citing that it was not enacted in good faith. The lawmakers argued that the law was anti-people and expressed unanimous support for its repeal after thorough discussions.

Speaker of the House, Aondona Dajoh, endorsed the unanimous resolution to repeal the “Bill for a law to repeal provision for the maintenance of former elected governors of the state and their deputies and for other matters connected thereto 2024.”

The original bill had included provisions such as:

    • Monthly stipends as basic pensions for former governors and their deputies, equivalent to the current salaries of the serving governor and deputy governor, funded from the state’s consolidated revenue.
    • A maintenance allowance of N25,000,000 for former governors and N15,000,000 for former deputy governors every four years.
    • The procurement of two official SUVs for former governors and one official car for former deputy governors, along with the provision of personal staff including assistants, drivers, cleaners, and cooks.
    • Additional benefits such as security, yearly medical expenses, and replacement of vehicles every four years with new ones of the same quality and status.

The assembly’s decision to repeal the law was driven by the consensus that it was not in the best interest of the people of Benue State. The legislators emphasized the need for laws that prioritize the welfare of the citizens rather than favoring a select few former officials.

She denied being unfaithful, stating that is ready to swear with anything about her fidelity.

This is coming after the singer went on Instagram Live on Sunday to claim Alexer got pregnant for another man one year after he stopped sleeping with her.

Alexer responded in a video, denying the allegations.

She said the singer cheated regularly during the relationship and she forgave, only for him to now accuse her of what she claims he is guilty of.

She said: “The night after our wedding, I was downstairs in a restaurant, you carried another girl to come and do quickie before I come upstairs catch una. I forgive you, we move on.

“So who is the one cheating? You cheat with full confidence, say I no go do anything.”

She questioned how Harry could claim that her child is not his.

“Telling me that I’m in a marriage and I carried another man’s child. You dey watch film? Abi na Nollywood? Because I don’t understand,”

    she said.

“I have never in my life. I say I dey swear with anything. I have never cheated on you in my life, since we married. I never tried it. I cannot.”

She added that she has told Harry that he can marry any of the girls he allegedly cheated on her with and all she wants is for him to take care of their kids. But she says he has found faults with all the girls.

Alexer also said that she respects the dead and doesn’t like having to mention Harry’s late mother but she had to after he falsely claimed her mother is with her 7th husband.

In posts shared via her Instagram Story, Alexer said her mother only remarried once after her first husband died. However, she said Harry’s mother had 6 children for 6 different men and none of them married her.

Harrysong’s Estranged Wife, Alexer Peres, Responds to Cheating Allegations

In a dramatic turn of events, Alexer Peres, the estranged wife of Nigerian singer Harrysong, has publicly responded to his accusations of infidelity. He further expressed regret over marrying into her family, accusing her mother of having been married to seven different men and still being unfaithful.

Peres has firmly denied these allegations, challenging Harrysong to present any evidence of her alleged infidelity. She clarified that her mother has only remarried once following the death of her father, countering Harrysong’s claims. Peres also turned the tables by making startling revelations about Harrysong’s family background and personal habits.

On her Instagram account, Peres wrote: “Do you all know that Harrysong bed wets? Yes, a celebrity who pisses in his sleep. I deal with this daily while calling him my lord.” She continued to dispute Harrysong’s narrative that she manipulated him into marriage, describing the accusation as absurd. “You said I convinced you to get married to me? A 20-year-old girl convincing a full-grown man to marry her? Please make me understand,” she wrote.

She questioned why he would attack her family when his own background had its issues, saying, “Why throw stones when you live in a glass house?”

In her Instagram post, Peres also declared her willingness to undergo DNA testing to clear her name regarding the paternity of her children. Additionally, she accused Harrysong of infecting her with multiple sexually transmitted diseases, with the exceptions of HIV and Hepatitis B.
