DIIGL Condemns Abraka DPO’s Reign of Terror, Calls on IGP, Governor Sheriff for Immediate Intervention

The Delta Indigenes Initiative for Good Leadership (DIIGL), a human rights advocacy organization, is urgently calling on the Inspector General of Police, the Delta Commissioner of Police, and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to take immediate action against the egregious misconduct of the Abraka Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Ayameh Fabian Efehi.

SP Fabian Efehi’s reign of terror in Abraka has gone unchecked for far too long. He has been accused of extorting money from suspects and unlawfully detaining complainants, perpetuating a culture of fear and impunity. This blatant abuse of power has left the community reeling, and it is time for those in authority to take decisive action.

We demand justice for the victims of SP Efehi’s reckless behavior,” said General Ejiwealth Emareyo, Chairman of DIIGL. The people of Abraka deserve better than a police officer who prioritizes personal gain over public safety. We urge the IGP, the Delta Commissioner of Police, and Governor Oborevwori to intervene and restore trust in the police force.

    The DIIGL is calling for:

    1. Suspension of SP Fabian Efehi as the Divisional Police Officer of Abraka Division pending the outcome of the investigation.
    2. Establishment of an independent complaint mechanism for the community to report police misconduct.
    3. A comprehensive review of police practices in Abraka Division to ensure accountability and transparency.

The people of Delta State deserve good leadership and responsible policing. We will not stand idly by while officers like SP Fabian Efehi undermine the rule of law and erode public trust. It’s time for change, and we demand action now!

    Signed,
    General Ejiwealth Emareyo

    1. Nigerian Economy Faces Growth Slowdown and High Inflation: Nigeria’s GDP growth for Q1 2024 dipped to a concerning 2.98%. This sluggish growth, coupled with persistent inflation, creates a challenging environment for businesses and consumers. The high cost of living is squeezing household budgets, while businesses grapple with rising input costs.

    2. Nigerian Tech Startups Struggle to Secure Funding: The once-booming Nigerian tech startup scene is facing a funding drought. Investors are becoming more cautious due to the economic slowdown. This lack of funding is hindering the growth of promising startups and could stifle innovation in the tech sector. Stakeholders are calling for solutions, such as the creation of angel investor networks and government support programs .

    3. Government Steps Up with Youth Startup Support: In a positive development, the Federal Government (FG) has approved N110 billion to support youth startups and early-growth businesses. This initiative aims to bridge the funding gap and empower young entrepreneurs. The success of this program will be crucial for fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem in Nigeria .

    4. Manufacturers Brace for Impact of CBN Interest Rate Hike: The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) decision to raise interest rates to 26.25% is causing concern among manufacturers. Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) warns that this increase could lead to higher production costs, potentially leading to price hikes for consumers and further dampening economic activity .

    5. Infrastructure Boost: African Development Bank Pledges $1.44 Billion: The African Development Bank (AfDB) has committed $1.44 billion to support infrastructure development projects in Nigeria. This investment is a welcome boost for the country’s long-term economic growth. Improved infrastructure will facilitate better transportation, power generation, and communication networks, which are essential for attracting investment and stimulating economic activity .

    6. Oil and Gas Sector: Anticipated $20 Billion Investment from IOCs: The FG has expressed optimism about the oil and gas sector, projecting $20 billion in investments from International Oil Companies (IOCs). If this materializes, it could revitalize the sector and boost government revenue. However, global oil price fluctuations and security concerns in the Niger Delta remain uncertainties .

    7. Power Sector Challenges: High Meter Prices and International Debt: Consumers are facing a significant hurdle in accessing electricity due to the high cost of meters (around N147,000). This is hindering efforts to improve electrification rates in Nigeria. Additionally, the country is grappling with $51 million in unpaid electricity bills from international consumers. Addressing these challenges is crucial for ensuring a stable and affordable power supply .

    8. Nigeria-Benin Trade Ties Strengthen: Nigeria and Benin are strengthening their bilateral trade relations. This move aims to enhance regional cooperation and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries. By fostering closer economic ties, the two nations can benefit from increased trade flows and economic integration .

    9. Naira Maintains Relative Stability: The Nigerian Naira has been holding relatively steady at around 1500 to the US dollar. This stability offers some relief for businesses and consumers who rely on foreign exchange for imports and international transactions. However, currency fluctuations remain a risk factor, and continued monitoring of the exchange rate is necessary .

    10. Nigeria in Legal Dispute with US Over Arms Funds: Nigeria is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the United States over $8.6 million in arms funds. The details and potential implications of this dispute are still unfolding .

Nigerian Brewers Post N170bn Loss Due to Weaker Naira and Rate Hikes

The listed brewers in Nigeria posted a combined loss of N169.7 billion in the first three months of 2024, according to a BusinessDay analysis of their financial statements. This significant loss contrasts sharply with Q1 of the previous year, where three of the breweries reported a total loss of N54.3 billion, while Guinness Nigeria managed to post a profit of N1.84 billion.

    Factors Behind the Losses

Rising Interest Rates and Naira Devaluation

The financial troubles of Champion Breweries Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Guinness Nigeria Plc can be attributed to rising interest rates and the further devaluation of the naira. These economic challenges have led to increased production costs and exacerbated the cost-of-doing-business crisis in Nigeria.

“The recent naira devaluation has significantly impaired value for businesses with huge dollar exposures, amid the protracted decline in purchasing power in the Nigerian economy,” said Ayodeji Ajilore, an investment research analyst with ARM.

    Foreign Exchange Losses

International Breweries recorded a foreign exchange loss of N162.2 billion in Q1 from an FX gain of N1.22 billion in the previous year. Nigerian Breweries’ FX loss widened to N72.85 billion from N14.64 billion, while Guinness Nigeria had an FX loss of N37.06 billion, up from N4.28 billion. Champion Breweries recorded an FX loss of N0.74 billion, whereas no FX loss was recorded in the same period of the previous year.

Nosike Nwajide, team lead of the research arm at Agusto &Co, highlighted that the shift to a floating exchange rate triggered a steep depreciation of the naira, leading to major FX losses in the industry.

    Impact on the Industry

The beer industry contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economy through its domestic and international operations and its global supply chain. In 2019, the global beer industry supported a $2.2 billion GVA contribution to Nigeria’s GDP, accounting for 0.6 percent of national GDP, according to Oxford Economics.

    Decline in Consumer Spending

Experts also attribute the losses to reduced consumer spending. Femi Egbesola, national president of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, pointed out that inflation has reduced the purchasing power and disposable income of consumers, forcing them to prioritize their spending.

“At the moment, many alternatives to alcohol are also available in the market and competition is very stiff,” Egbesola noted.

Uchenna Uzo, a professor of marketing at Lagos Business School, added that household incomes are failing to keep pace with the country’s accelerating inflation, leading to shrinking wallets and low demand.

“People are not buying as much as they would before the economic conditions in Nigeria,” Uzo said. “There has also been a bit more variety in terms of different types of beers other than the traditional premium lager that customers have available to them, and there are cheaper variants, so people are willing to explore lower-quality alcoholic beverages at cheaper prices.”

    Future Outlook

The macroeconomic headwinds, including surging costs, continue to affect beer makers. As Nigeria navigates these economic challenges, it remains to be seen how the brewers will adapt and manage their financial health.

That is all for today on Dollar to Naira Black Market Exchange Rate.

Children’s Day: See the 7 Basic Needs of Your Children

Children’s Day: Understanding the Basic Needs of your Child.

The 27th of May is traditionally Children’s Day in Nigeria. While it is not a general public holiday, the day is set aside to honor the younger generation, with elementary and secondary school students receiving the day off. This day celebrates the importance of children and acknowledges their rights to health, education, and protection. In light of the May 27th Children’s Day celebration, Ejes Gist News Nigeria has gathered some facts to help parents understand their children’s basic needs better.

Children’s Day: Here Are Some of the Basic Needs of a Child

Security For children to feel secure, all their basic survival needs must be met, including shelter, food, clothing, medical care, and protection from harm.

Children’s Day: Apostolic Faith Church children choir dazzles audience

Stability Stability is provided by the family and community. If a family cannot remain together in a stable household, it is essential to minimize disruption to the child’s life. Families and children should be part of larger units to foster a sense of belonging, continuity, and tradition.

Consistency Parents should coordinate their parenting to ensure that important values remain constant. Consistent words and actions from parents foster children’s trust, respect, self-respect, and ultimately, independence.

Love Saying and demonstrating your love for your children can overcome almost any “mistakes” you may make as a parent. Even if your children disobey, anger, frustrate, or rebel against you, it is crucial to show them that you love them and will always love them.

Education Ensure that your children receive the best education possible for their future. This includes formal schooling and the invaluable life lessons you impart during your time together.

Positive Role Models Parents are the first and most influential role models for their children. Instill your values and teach empathy by being the kind of person you want your children to become.

    Global Children’s Day Celebrations

While Nigeria celebrates Children’s Day on May 27, other countries have their own designated days. China celebrates Children’s Day on June 1, Japan on May 5, and the United Kingdom on August 20. Regardless of the date, the essence of Children’s Day remains the same: to honor and recognize the importance of the younger generation.

Ajayi Crowther University Student Beaten to Death by Peers Over Phone Theft.

A tragic incident unfolded at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo as a student was fatally beaten by his peers for allegedly stealing a mobile phone. The altercation, which began around 10 p.m. on Friday, escalated after the students identified the victim as the thief.

An anonymous source within the institution reported that apart from the theft, the student was also accused of transferring money from the stolen phone to another account.

Several short video clips seen by Ejes Gist News Nigeria depicted a male student assaulting his classmate, who was writhing on the ground, while another voice urged the assailant to hit harder.

The source explained that the students from Ajayi Crowther University were enraged by both the phone theft and the unauthorized money transfer. The victim was ejected from the hostel on Friday evening and was found dead early on Saturday.

In response, the school officials announced the expulsion of the students involved in what they described as an ‘altercation that resulted in the death of a fellow student’. Mr. Femi Atoyebi, the university’s Public Relations Officer, released a statement refuting claims that those implicated were part of a secret cult.

“Contrary to popular belief, the university asserts that there is no cult activity on campus, and maintains a strict stance against any form of societal misconduct. It should be noted that the expelled students are not affiliated with any cult group,” Atoyebi stated.

Atoyebi clarified that the incident was an alleged case of phone theft by the deceased. Instead of reporting the incident to university authorities, the expelled students acted impulsively, resulting in the tragic death of their peer.

The university has handed over all involved students to the police for investigation and promised that justice would prevail. “The university remains resolute in its dedication to providing a safe, conducive, peaceful, and morally upright environment for learning,” Atoyebi affirmed.

Breaking: Arewa Group Urges Dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, to Vacate the Palace for the Sake of Peace

Arewa Group Calls on Deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, to Relinquish the Palace to Ensure Peace”

The Arewa Social Contract Initiative has called for the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, to leave the ancient city immediately to maintain peace.

The plea was made on Sunday, May 26, following Bayero’s return to Kano, where he has taken residence in the Gidan Nasarawa palace, escalating tensions as Sanusi occupies the main palace.

Alh. Sani Mahmoud Darma, the national chairman of the Arewa Social Contract Initiative, addressed the press in Kano, highlighting that the collective decision of Arewa executives from 19 northern states identified Bayero as the root of the ongoing conflict.

Darma emphasized that Bayero’s acceptance of his dethronement and departure from Kano should have been final.

“It is very unfortunate that after his dethronement, Aminu Ado Bayero accepted the decision and packed all his belongings from the palace and left Kano state, then some people from the top brought him back and claimed his lost position,” Darma stated. He stressed that Bayero’s return could incite violence, urging him to pursue any grievances through legal channels outside Kano.

Drawing on historical precedents, Darma noted, “This is unacceptable! It happened to Sanusi and he benefited. When Sanusi was dethroned and he (Bayero) was appointed he accepted everything in good faith and left Kano for Bayero to occupy the palace. Why is he back now that he is the victim? It shows he is still interested in the throne.”

The Arewa leader reiterated the group’s unwavering support for the reinstated Emir Sanusi, crediting Governor Abba Yusuf’s campaign promise and the Kano people’s satisfaction with his decision. Darma pointed out that Sanusi’s reinstatement was a long-awaited move welcomed by the populace.

“This is purely the decision of the State House of Assembly, the governor, the kingmakers, and the people of the state, after the old law was repealed. So, it is purely a state affair,” Darma concluded, expressing surprise at the court’s involvement.

Details Emerge as Abuja-Kaduna Train Derails

Kaduna, Nigeria – In the early hours of Sunday, May 26, a train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed at Jere in Kaduna state. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

The train, which began its journey at 8:05 am, experienced the derailment halfway through its route. An unidentified number of passengers were on board when the incident occurred.

An official from the service, who requested anonymity, suggested that the derailment might be linked to vandalization of the rail tracks. He confirmed that no fewer than three coaches were affected by the derailment. Security personnel and officials from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) were promptly deployed to the site to investigate and manage the situation.

“We are thankful that the incident did not lead to any casualty,” the official said. “The coaches derailed in one of our stations where we have two lines. So, what we simply did was to detach the three coaches that were affected and move other coaches to the line that was not affected.”

The official assured that there would be no suspension of train services along the Abuja-Kaduna route. “Our engineers are already on the ground to fix the problem. The derailment did not affect our services significantly; we only experienced a few hours of delay to ensure the site was safe for other operations of the day.”

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident and stated that normal services continue despite the derailment. “The management of the NRC hereby informs the general public, especially our valued passengers, that normal passenger train services between Kaduna-Rigasa and Idu-Abuja continue despite the minor derailment of our coach at Jere station this morning,” said Yakub Mahmood, NRC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has deployed a team to the site to conduct a thorough investigation. “NSIB is aware of the derailment of an Abuja-bound train from Kaduna which occurred halfway into the journey at Jere. A go team has been deployed to the site of the incident,” stated the NSIB.

The NRC management expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured passengers of their commitment to safety and comfort.

  • Breaking: Tinubu’s Government Drags 36 Governors to Supreme Court

Breaking: Tinubu’s Government Drags 36 Governors to Supreme Court

FCT, Abuja – In a landmark move, the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated legal action against all 36 state governors, bringing them before the Supreme Court over alleged misconduct in the administration of Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has filed the suit SC/CV/343/2024, pushing for full autonomy for LGAs. This move aims to safeguard the democratic process within local governments and ensure they operate independently from state interference.

Prince Fagbemi’s legal challenge urges the Supreme Court to prevent governors from unlawfully dissolving democratically elected local government chairpersons. Additionally, he calls for direct funding to local governments from the Federation Account, eliminating the need for state intermediaries.

Fagbemi contends that the current practice of governors appointing Caretaker Committees to manage LGAs undermines the constitutionally guaranteed democratic system. He seeks a court order to stop governors from tampering with local government funds, arguing for an injunction to protect these resources.

This case follows a precedent set by former President Goodluck Jonathan, who advocated for LGA autonomy in 2012. Jonathan emphasized the importance of robust local governments for national development and security. He argued that functioning local councils are crucial for addressing issues at the grassroots level, including the rising wave of insecurity.

As the nation watches, this legal battle could redefine the balance of power between state and local governments, potentially transforming the administrative landscape of Nigeria.

DNA Must Be Done On Mohbad’s Son Before Singer’s Burial – Father

Joseph Aloba, the father of late Nigerian singer, Illerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad, has stated that a DNA test must be conducted on his grandson before the singer is buried.

DAILY POST recalls that Mohbad’s body was exhumed for autopsy days after his burial following public outcry for an investigation into his controversial death.

However, the result of the autopsy conducted on the body of the late singer is said to have been unable to ascertain the cause of his death.

Following the failed autopsy, many have been clamouring for his body to be buried.

Reacting in a recent interview with TVC, Mr Aloba vowed not to release his son’s body for burial until a DNA test is conducted on his grandson, Liam, to ascertain his true paternity.

“I have to do the DNA [on Mohbad’s son] before the burial,” he said.

“I’m doubting the [the paternity of Mohbad’s] son also. Sometimes she [Mohbad’s wife] will leave home for 3 days without the consent of the husband.”

On the allegations that he is wearing Mohbad’s clothes and trying to inherit his properties, Aloba said, “When Mohbad was alive, we were friends. If he buys clothes for himself, he would also buy for me.

“Since his death, I have never gone to his house. I have never gone there for anything. But some people misinterpreted things so whenever they see me with a shirt, they say it is Mohbad’s. Is it compulsory that it must be from my son? I have my own clothes, too.”

  • Effium/Ezza Crisis: Community Rejects New Peace Committee Chairman

Effium/Ezza Crisis: Community Rejects New Peace Committee Chairman

The leaders of Effium in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, under the umbrella of Effium Elders, have rejected the new peace committee recently set up by the Ebonyi State Government and headed by Ambassador Frank Ogbuewu, former minister of culture and tourism.

In a letter dated 22 May, 2024 and addressed to Governor Francis Nwifuru, the Effium Elders claimed that the former minister would be impartial because his wife is from Ezza, a party to the raging crisis in the Effium community.

The letter, which was signed by Elder Ideyi Onwe, Pastor Dominic Ogbuoke, and 14 others, however, commended Nwifuru for his efforts to restore permanent peace in Effium community.

“We humbly write to commend your Excellency for your numerous achievements within a year of your assumption of office as the Executive Governor of Ebonyi state. We are particularly pleased with your strong disposition/determination towards ensuring that enduring peace returns to all crisis-ridden areas in the state, especially the Effium community.

“Your approach towards the restoration of peace in Effium has been very wonderful, especially with the setting up of the retired Bishop Okoro-led Peace Committee that brought out far-reaching recommendations that would make for permanent peace and which _your Excellency promised to implement 100% and was at the final stage of achieving that before the process was regrettably aborted.

“Your Excellency Sir, Effium people will continue to stand by you and the Effium peace process and wish to bring to your knowledge that our sons who are representing us at the peace meetings have briefed us on the outcome of their meeting with the new peace committee especially the way they were subjected to bullying and unwarranted intimidation by the Committee Chairman Amb Frank Ogbuewu. We take strong exceptions to this, however, we take responsibility for our representatives not endorsing the new peace Accord as the contents portend danger for the continued survival/identity of the Effium race.

“We consider this new draft of the Peace Accord as not only an afterthought but an aberration in the history of dispute resolution the world over. Consequently, we wish to state as follows:

“That Effium people stand by the Peace Accord joyfully signed by both parties without let or hindrance on the 14th day of March 2024 as the contents emanated from the recommendations of the Bishop Okoro-led Peace Committee.

“That the Chairman of the new peace committee should recuse himself from the committee. We say this because being married to an Ezza woman, he is automatically an interested party. This is our strong fear.

“That our three sons who desperately signed the document did not do that on behalf of Effium people but for their pecuniary interest and we have strong reservations for their actions. A popular African adage says “If you sell your brother even the buyer will not trust you.

“Once again we wish to commend and enjoin you not to see the actions of our sons on the 21st day of May 2024 as an attempt to disparage your commitment to the restoration of total peace in Effium as they have a mandate from us as the custodian of Effium land to act in that manner,” the letter read.

  • Ride-Hailing App Driver Narrates How He Helped A White Woman Discover Her Boyfriend Is A Yahoo Boy

     Yahoo Boy

A Nigerian driver working for a ride-hailing app shares the tale of how he aided a white woman in realizing that her boyfriend is involved in internet fraud.

According to @Max_J619, he pushed to help the white woman after she offered him N50k to spill some secrets about Yahoo boys.

    Read his lengthy post below…

“So yesterday I got a request to pick up a white woman from the island to the mainland. Her Nigerian boyfriend, whom I was to take her to, did the booking. He called and said, “boss abeg, no follow her talk anything. She too dey ask questions and her mouth no dey stay on place”.

“He further said: “Another thing be say, you go find way delay her, cos I tell her say I dey house and I no dey, so e no go make sense if you carry her come and I no dey house.”. I asked, “Where you come dey baba?” He replied, “Omo, I dey Island o, just delay her, I go sort you out, bro.”.

“Immediately after he said the “sort” word, I knew I had work to do (to save a brother). I finally picked the women up, and we zoomed off. I made sure not to engage her; just focus, drive, and mind my business. She was with a camera, so she kept snapping as we drove. Few minutes into the trip.

“She engaged me in formalities and asked a few questions about myself and Nigeria. She also talked about herself and her country. Well, these were friendly questions/conversations, so I answered cautiously. When she saw I took her bait, she went for the kill by saying, “I’m going to see my boyfriend, but he’s been acting up strangely.”.

“”Each time I call, he’s always home on his laptop, asked him so many times what he’s into and keep getting the same answer: “Tech”. “I’m confused, I feel he’s jobless because the house he’s living in, car he’s driving and laptop, I got them all for him”. “My money, my sweat”.

“”You’re a Nigerian, so please could you tell me who and what a Yahoo boy is?” “Look, I’m going to give you extra money if you tell me, because I need to be sure I’m not wasting my time.”. Naso she comot mint one thousand Naira bundle (50k). “It’s all yours; just tell me, please.”

“Without hiding my love for money, I told her what I knew about the Yahoo lifestyle and how she could tell if her man was into it. She was satisfied with everything I said. Meanwhile, the guy kept calling in between the trip, and I assured him not to worry that everything was under control.

“Her man was already in the house by the time we got to her destination. Love was in the air as they hugged, kissed, and laughed while the neighborhood watched in amazement. He paid me and topped it off with 500 Naira. I looked at him, all surprised, and he said, “Bros, I have your number, no worries.”

“I smiled, bumped knuckles with him, and nodded. I was about to enter my car when the whitey halted me to wait as she gave me a parting hug. She called me this morning and told me I was right about everything, and she has ended her relationship with him. Not only was he a Yahoo boy, he was also cheating, according to her.”
