Ajayi Crowther University Student Beaten to Death by Peers Over Phone Theft.

A tragic incident unfolded at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo as a student was fatally beaten by his peers for allegedly stealing a mobile phone. The altercation, which began around 10 p.m. on Friday, escalated after the students identified the victim as the thief.

An anonymous source within the institution reported that apart from the theft, the student was also accused of transferring money from the stolen phone to another account.

Several short video clips seen by Ejes Gist News Nigeria depicted a male student assaulting his classmate, who was writhing on the ground, while another voice urged the assailant to hit harder.

The source explained that the students from Ajayi Crowther University were enraged by both the phone theft and the unauthorized money transfer. The victim was ejected from the hostel on Friday evening and was found dead early on Saturday.

In response, the school officials announced the expulsion of the students involved in what they described as an ‘altercation that resulted in the death of a fellow student’. Mr. Femi Atoyebi, the university’s Public Relations Officer, released a statement refuting claims that those implicated were part of a secret cult.

“Contrary to popular belief, the university asserts that there is no cult activity on campus, and maintains a strict stance against any form of societal misconduct. It should be noted that the expelled students are not affiliated with any cult group,” Atoyebi stated.

Atoyebi clarified that the incident was an alleged case of phone theft by the deceased. Instead of reporting the incident to university authorities, the expelled students acted impulsively, resulting in the tragic death of their peer.

The university has handed over all involved students to the police for investigation and promised that justice would prevail. “The university remains resolute in its dedication to providing a safe, conducive, peaceful, and morally upright environment for learning,” Atoyebi affirmed.
