Osun State Polytechnic, Iree Campus Closed for Two Weeks as Suspended Rector Returns.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Osun State Government has issued a directive to close The Osun State Polytechnic, Iree Campus, for a period of two weeks. This decision comes on the heels of the reinstatement of the suspended Rector, Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo.

The closure order was officially announced through a statement signed by the Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, on Thursday. The statement reads as follows:

“To inform the general public, particularly members of staff and students of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, to proceed on a two-week break, with immediate effect. The immediate break is a necessary action to maintain peace in the institution following the forceful return of the suspended Rector, Dr. T.A. Odetayo. The general public should also note that school accounts have been frozen with immediate effect, and it is imperative that everyone cooperates fully and adheres to these directives.”

The suspension of Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo had been ordered by the state government through a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Kehinde Jimoh, on July 24, 2023. The suspension was based on allegations of gross misappropriation of funds and abuse of office. During this period, Alabi Kehinde had been appointed to serve as Acting Rector.

However, in a surprising twist, Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo resumed office early on Thursday, following an order from the National Industrial Court, Ibadan Division, which reinstated him as the Rector. Justice Opeloye Ogunbowale, delivering the ruling on the motion, granted an interim order restraining Governor Adeleke and 14 others from appointing a new rector for the polytechnic.

Justice Ogunbowale further directed that all respondents, including Governor Adeleke, stay any further action concerning the institution until the hearing of the motion on notice scheduled for October 10, 2023. A hearing notice is to be issued to all respondents before the next adjourned date.

In response to these developments, the state government’s Acting Rector, Kehinde Alabi, has appealed to members of the Polytechnic Community to remain calm. Alabi has encouraged staff and students not to submit to any form of intimidation but to maintain peace and order. He also stated, “The state government is looking into the situation and will seek a stay of execution in court.”

As the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree Campus, temporarily closes its doors, the future of the institution remains uncertain, with legal proceedings set to unfold in the coming weeks.

FCT Police quells violence as DSS agent kills designer.

In a shocking turn of events, the Garki International Market in Abuja descended into chaos on Thursday night as an altercation between a Department of State Services (DSS) agent and a local tailor resulted in tragedy.

The incident, which saw the fatal shooting of a fashion designer, sent shockwaves through the community and led to a violent protest that had to be subdued by officers of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.

    DSS agent kills designer

According to witnesses at the scene, the unfortunate incident began when a customer brought the DSS personnel to the fashion designer’s shop, alleging that the tailor had failed to deliver clothes on an agreed-upon date. Tensions escalated rapidly when some of the designer’s colleagues intervened on his behalf, attempting to mediate the dispute.

Eyewitnesses report that the situation took a deadly turn when the DSS agent allegedly opened fire, resulting in the death of the fashion designer and injuries to others present. The DSS agent was subsequently apprehended and detained by the police at the Wuse Market Police station.

A trader from the market, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing events, saying, “A female customer of the fashion designer brought the DSS. She said the fashion designer did not sew her clothes. Her colleagues joined and defended her. The issue led to a serious argument. We later heard a gunshot and learned that the fashion designer had been killed and another injured.”

In response to the incident, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, issued a statement, stating, “In an incident at Garki International Market on September 7, 2023, an altercation arose between market occupants and certain individuals, including a DSS personnel and a tailor named Muhammad Habibu.

Adeh continued, “The Garki Divisional Police station mobilized officers in response to a received distress call reporting the invasion of the market by these individuals, who fired shots at a tailor known as Mubarak Mubarak. This incident led to some of the local youths reacting angrily and attempting to confront the DSS personnel involved. In response, the police intervened to rescue the individuals and protect public safety.”

The statement emphasized the commitment to maintaining peace and respecting the rights of all citizens within the FCT. It also urged market occupants to refrain from engaging in mischief involving public property.

On the other hand, the DSS, through its spokesperson Peter Afunanya, issued a statement acknowledging the incident. Afunanya stated, “The Department of State Services has been drawn to an incident that occurred a few hours ago between its staff and a mob at the Garki Market, Abuja.

He further explained, “Information at the disposal of the Service was that its FCT Command responded to an SOS from their field operatives who allegedly came under a mob attack in the said market. Consequently, the Service has commenced an investigation into the matter.”

The DSS assured the public that details of the inquiry would be communicated soon and that proper disciplinary measures would be taken if any staff members were found culpable.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident has left the community in shock, raising questions about the use of force and the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts within public spaces.

Atiku Abubakar Rejects PEPT Verdict, Vows to Continue Legal Battle.

In a bold and resolute response to the recent verdict by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), former Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has rejected the tribunal’s decision to uphold the election of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The tribunal’s ruling, which was delivered on Wednesday, struck out the petition filed by Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, challenging the outcome of the February 25 presidential election. The tribunal, chaired by Justice Haruna Tsammani and comprising other members, cited a lack of merit in the petitions as the basis for upholding President Tinubu’s victory.

In response to the verdict, Atiku Abubakar held a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, where he unequivocally rejected the outcome and announced his determination to continue the legal battle by filing an appeal at the Supreme Court.

Addressing the media, Atiku stated, “I am here today to give my official reaction to the judgement delivered yesterday by the Presidential Election Petition Court on the 2023 presidential elections.” He added, “I am no stranger to legal battles. I can say that I have a fair idea of how the court system works. All through my career as a politician, I have been a fighter, and I will continue to fight.

Atiku expressed his concerns about the integrity of the election process, emphasizing that the aim of conducting credible elections in the country was compromised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its management of the presidential election.

While acknowledging the respect for the court’s judgement, Atiku asserted, “I refuse to accept it because I believe it is devoid of substantial justice.” He made it clear that he had instructed his legal team to activate the right to appeal in the higher court, signaling his determination to pursue the legal avenue to seek redress.

Popular Filmmaker Jason Njoku Criticizes President Tinubu’s First 100 Days in Office.

Prominent Nigerian filmmaker, Jason Njoku, has raised his voice in criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s first 100 days in office. In a candid and thought-provoking statement on social media, Njoku expressed his dismay at the prevailing atmosphere of celebration amidst what he described as “Old Testament levels of suffering.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, September 6, Njoku did not mince words as he appraised the President’s initial period in office. He began by acknowledging the jubilation seen in some quarters, a phenomenon that has captured the attention of many Nigerians. However, Njoku’s assessment took a starkly different tone.

Njoku, known for his candid commentary on social and political issues, expressed shock at the celebratory mood when, in his view, substantial challenges and hardships continue to persist. His tweet emphasized the stark contrast between the jubilation and the harsh realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

The filmmaker’s tweet read, “He is shocked that people are jubilating in the face of suffering. According to him, after one hundred days in office, some Nigerians are still ‘’wholeheartedly” defending what he termed ‘’Old Testament levels of suffering.’

This critique by Jason Njoku resonates with the concerns of many Nigerians who have been grappling with issues such as inflation, unemployment, and insecurity. As a news editor and online publisher, Njoku’s commentary holds significant weight, reflecting the sentiments of those who have been vocal about their expectations for President Tinubu’s administration.

President Tinubu, who assumed office just over three months ago, faces the formidable task of addressing these pressing challenges and delivering on the promises made during his campaign. The filmmaker’s critique serves as a reminder of the urgency with which Nigerians are hoping for meaningful change and improvement in their lives.

While the jubilation over the President’s first 100 days in office continues, Jason Njoku’s candid assessment highlights the need for a critical examination of the current state of affairs in Nigeria. It underscores the importance of holding leaders accountable and striving for a better future for all citizens, even in the face of adversity.

Messi and Haaland Headline 2023 Ballon d’Or Nominees.

Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland lead the prestigious list of candidates for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award after France Football magazine officially unveiled the nominees on Wednesday.

This nomination marks a significant moment for Messi, as he was notably absent from the shortlist last year. If the legendary Argentine forward secures the men’s Ballon d’Or this year, it would be an astonishing eighth time, placing him just behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who has clinched the award five times. In February, Messi also claimed the Best FIFA Men’s Player award for the second time.

Interestingly, Cristiano Ronaldo, now with Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, did not make the cut for the first time since 2003.

The eagerly anticipated winner of this prestigious award will be announced at a grand ceremony hosted at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on October 30.

Messi’s incredible year included leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup in December, a historic achievement that had eluded him throughout his illustrious 21-year career. The World Cup triumph was particularly sweet for Messi, as it was the only major trophy he had yet to win.

In terms of club performance, Messi had a mixed year at Paris Saint-Germain, where the French side was eliminated from the Champions League at the round-of-16 stage for the second consecutive season. Nonetheless, he played a pivotal role in securing PSG’s 11th Ligue 1 title.

This summer, Messi made a surprising move by joining Inter Miami on a free transfer, where he swiftly made an impact by helping the team secure the Leagues Cup and a spot in the final of the U.S. Open Cup.

Erling Haaland, on the other hand, emerged as a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or. The Norwegian striker had a remarkable season, netting an astonishing 52 goals in 53 games across all competitions while representing Manchester City, who clinched the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League titles.

Haaland’s debut campaign in England was historic, breaking the Premier League’s single-season scoring record with an incredible 36 goals.

The young striker also received several individual accolades for his outstanding performances, including the PFA Player of the Year, Premier League’s Player of the Season, and Football Writers’ Association’s Men’s Player of the Year.

Unsurprisingly, this year’s list of nominees is dominated by players from Manchester City and Argentina. Seven players who contributed to City’s treble-winning campaign last season, including Haaland, have made the shortlist. Furthermore, there are four Argentine players, including Messi, who played pivotal roles in their nation’s third World Cup victory.

The complete list of men’s Ballon d’Or nominees for 2023:

    – André Onana – Manchester United/Cameroon

    – Jude Bellingham – Real Madrid/England

Factors Influencing Foreign Black Market dollar to naira Exchange Rate

Here are some of the causes of the dwindling dollar-to-naira exchange rate.

Inflation Rates: It is well known that inflation directly impacts black market exchange rates. If the Nigerian economy can be stabilized and inflation is controlled, the naira will benefit; however, if the naira continues to fall, it may indicate that food and other necessities are becoming more expensive daily.Dollar to Naira Black Market Rate ,Aboki Dollar to Naira Today

Interest Rates: Another tool to keep an eye on is interest rates. If the interest rate at which banks lend money rises, it would harm the economy, causing it to contract and, as a result, the value of the naira to fall.

Government Debt: National debt can impact investor confidence and, as a result, the influx of funds into the economy. If inflows are high, the naira exchange rate will rise in favour of the naira.
Speculators: Speculators frequently impact the naira-to-dollar exchange rate. They stockpile money in anticipation of a gain, causing the naira to plummet even lower.
Conditions of Trade: Favorable trade terms will increase the value of the naira to the dollar, although Nigeria is currently experiencing a trade deficit. Everything comes from China, India, and the majority of Asian countries.

Here are some of the factors that can affect the CBN exchange rate between the Nigerian naira and the US dollar:

    • Demand and supply: If there is more demand for the US dollar than there is supply, the exchange rate will go up. Conversely, if there is more supply of the US dollar than there is demand, the exchange rate will go down.
    • Economic factors: The state of the Nigerian economy and the US economy can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if the Nigerian economy is doing well, the naira will be more valuable. Conversely, if the Nigerian economy is doing poorly, the naira will be less valuable.
    • Political factors: Political instability in Nigeria or the US can also affect the exchange rate. For example, if there is a coup in Nigeria, the naira will likely lose value.

Tribunal sacks LP lawmaker who said, ‘He Never Knew Tinubu was An Intelligent Man

The National Assembly election petition tribunal in Umuahia, Abia State, has nullified the election of Hon Amobi Ogah of the Labour Party (LP) and declared Nkiruka Onyejiocha, the present Minister of State for Labour and Employment, as the winner of the Isiukwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency polls.

The tribunal’s decision was based on the finding that Ogah’s emergence and victory did not comply with the Electoral Act. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had initially declared Amobi Ogah as the winner of the election with 11,769 votes, compared to Onyejiocha’s 8,752 votes.

However, dissatisfied with the result, Onyejeocha filed a petition before the National Assembly election petition tribunal, seeking the nullification of Ogah’s election, presenting seven reliefs in her petition.

Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, the three-man panel ruled that Ogah’s emergence as the LP candidate did not comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act. They pointed out the absence of evidence of giving 21 days’ notice to INEC before conducting the primary election and the lack of documented primary election dates and results.

The tribunal also dismissed Ogah’s argument that Onyejeocha’s acceptance of a ministerial appointment was a sign that she had abandoned her petition, stating that Section 66 was not applicable in this scenario.

In its final ruling, the tribunal concurred with the petitioner’s claim of overvoting in some electoral units in favor of Amobi Ogah and the LP, while Onyejiocha’s actual votes were not declared by INEC. After adjusting for the alleged inflated figures, the tribunal declared Nkiruka Onyejiocha as the winner with 11,976 votes, while Amobi Ogah scored 9,736 votes.

It’s worth noting that Amobi Ogah is the younger brother of Uche Ogah, a former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development. This tribunal decision marks a significant development in the Isiukwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency election and raises questions about compliance with electoral regulations.

Breaking: Tribunal strikes out Atiku’s petition Against Tinubu’s Victory

Tribunal Strikes Out Key Portions of Atiku’s Petition Against Tinubu’s Victory

In a significant setback for the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abubakar Atiku, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has struck out multiple paragraphs of his petition aimed at challenging Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency.

The Tribunal also rejected several exhibits and witness statements presented by Atiku to substantiate his claims of irregularities and malpractices during the February 25 presidential election.

Read Also Labour Party Rejects PEPC Judgment, Vows to Pursue Justice

Justice Moses Ugoh, delivering the ruling on objections presented by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, representing Tinubu, declared that several sections of Atiku’s petition lacked a solid legal foundation and, therefore, were not competent.

Much like the fate suffered by Peter Obi of the Labour Party, the court found that Atiku had not provided essential facts necessary to support his petition. Notably, Atiku failed to specify where ballot boxes were allegedly stolen, the methods by which BVAS machines were supposedly manipulated, and the names of polling booths where alleged malpractices occurred.

Furthermore, Atiku did not clearly state the total number of lawful votes he claimed to have received, despite asserting that he garnered the majority of lawful votes. This omission raised questions about the credibility of his allegations.

The Tribunal pointed out that Atiku accused Tinubu of not obtaining the majority of lawful votes but did not specify the exact number of lawful votes he believed Tinubu had secured.

Additionally, the Tribunal noted that Atiku made serious allegations against Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and the Chairman of Olamaboro Local Government of Kogi, Friday Adejoh, but failed to include them as respondents in the petition. This omission was deemed fatal to the petition because it denied the Governor the opportunity to defend himself as required by law.

The Tribunal dismissed Atiku’s claims of overvoting across Nigeria, stating that such pleadings violated the law since they did not specify the exact locations where alleged overvoting occurred.

Furthermore, the Tribunal criticized Atiku for introducing various facts and allegations in an unlawful manner, catching the respondents off guard and employing unfair tactics.

Among the contentious new facts introduced by Atiku were allegations of criminal conviction, certificate forgery, and dual citizenship of Guinea against Tinubu, which were presented outside the standard procedure for filing petitions.

Justice Stephen Jonah Adah, who delivered another ruling on objections against the petition, removed several documents submitted by Atiku because they were created during the pendency of the petition.

Moreover, evidence from several key witnesses for Atiku was expunged from the Court record, as they had been presented in ways not recognized by the law.

The Tribunal’s decision to strike out significant portions of Atiku’s petition may have far-reaching implications for his legal battle to challenge Tinubu’s presidency.

Tribunal Chairman, Justice K. A. Orjiako, presiding over a three-man panel, delivered a unanimous judgment that revealed significant irregularities in Sen. Ohere’s victory. According to Justice Orjiako, Sen. Ohere’s election results were inflated in nine polling units located in the Ajaokuta Local Government Area. Furthermore, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had reportedly reduced Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan’s results in those same areas and omitted the results of three additional polling units designated for Natasha in the same local government area.

In light of these discrepancies, the tribunal carried out necessary corrections to rectify the election results. As a result, Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan was declared the rightful winner of the election, securing a total of 54,074 votes. This surpassed Sen. Ohere’s vote count of 51,291 votes.

This ruling is expected to have significant implications for the representation of Kogi Central in the Senate and underscores the importance of upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

As the details of this ruling emerge, it is certain that it will shape the political landscape of Kogi Central and serve as a testament to the importance of transparency and accuracy in electoral outcomes.
