Incoming Kano Governor, Abba Gida-Gida to Revisit Sanusi’s Dethronement

Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, candidate for president of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has made a new revelation about sanusi’s dethronement.

According to him, the incoming Kano government will reconsider the dethronement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the fourteenth Emir of Kano.

Sanusi, who became emir during Kwankwaso’s final term as governor, was dethroned by Kwankwaso’s successor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who was deputy governor when the monarch was installed.

Sanusi was deposed on March 9, 2020, exiled from Kano, and exiled to Loko, a remote community in Nasarawa State, pending an investigation into the expenses of the emirate he led.

Ganduje also divided the emirate into five and appointed five equal emirs.

Kwankwao, however, stated in a viral video that the dethronement and balkanization of the emirate would be reviewed by the government of Abba Kabir Yusuf, the incoming governor, also known as Abba Gida-Gida.

“We have campaigned, and as you know, we are popular in Nigeria, particularly in the state of Kano. We are now back, and God willing, we will continue the good work that the previous administration began. This incoming governor and his administration will adopt them.”

“As elders, we will continue to counsel them to act morally. We attempted not to intervene in the issue of bringing or removing an Emir, but the time has come to do so.

“Those who have been granted this opportunity will consider the issues. They will examine what is expected of them. In addition to the Emir, the emirate has been divided into five locations. All of these must be investigated. Typically, a leader inherits issues that are difficult to resolve.”

He prayed further for God’s intervention so that the incoming governor would be able to handle the situation with ease.

National association of resident doctors give FG 2-week ultimatum

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has threatened to shut down the health sector if its demands are not met by the federal government within two weeks.

The Nigerian Association for Resident Doctors (NARD) is demanding the immediate withdrawal and rescinding of a bill that would prevent Nigerian medical doctors from receiving full practising licences or from travelling abroad for five years, as well as a 200 percent salary increase for doctors.

On Saturday, the president of the NARD, Dr. Emeka Innocent, issued the warning while reading the communique issued at the conclusion of the association’s Extraordinary National Executive Council Meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Innocent stated, “despite numerous discussions with FG on the need to increase the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, which was last reviewed more than ten years ago.

“The government has not invited NARD to the negotiating table nor has it taken any action to address the issue. The government had previously received ultimatums regarding the salary structure review.

In addition to lamenting the government’s refusal to pay salary arrears for 2014, 2015, and 2016, as well as the arrears of the consequential adjustment of minimum wage, Innocent pointed out that many state governors have yet to implement the appropriate CONMESS structure, domesticate the medical residency training act, MRTA, or improve the hazard allowance paid to NARD members.

“In the nine-point resolutions, the body demanded a “immediate increase in the CONMESS salary structure to the tune of 200 percent of the current gross salary of doctors, in addition to the new allowances included in the letter written by NARD to the Honourable Minister of Health on July 7, 2022 for the review of CONMESS.”

Other demands include the immediate massive recruitment of clinical staff, the commencement of payment of all salary arrears owed to our members, including 2014, 2015, and 2016 salary arrears, and areas of consequential minimum wage adjustment.

According to him, the two-week deadline begins on Saturday, April 29th, 2023, to resolve all of these demands, after which, on May 13th, we may not be able to guarantee nationwide industrial harmony in the sector.

  • Meet Court Of Appeal Judges To Determine Peter Obi, Atiku’s Petition Against Tinubu, INEC

Meet Court Of Appeal Judges To Determine Peter Obi, Atiku’s Petition Against Tinubu, INEC

The fate of the petitions contesting the outcome of the 2023 presidential election now lies in the hands of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), sitting at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

The Tribunal first sitting is May 10,

Selected Court of Appeal judges will be in charge of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which serves as the court of first instance and has jurisdiction over petitions related to presidential elections.

In late 2021, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Lateef Ariwoola, made a significant move by inaugurating a total of 277 election petition tribunal judges. These judges have been tasked with presiding over cases that pertain to the upcoming 2023 governorship, national, and state assembly elections.

The official declaration of the judges for the presidential election petition tribunal is still pending.

As of now, a total of five petitions have been filed in opposition to the recent presidential election. These petitions have been submitted by various parties and individuals, including Peter Obi and the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party, the Action Alliance (AA) and its presidential candidate, Mr. Solomon Okangbuan, the Allied People’s Movement (APM) and its presidential candidate, Princess Chichi Ojei, and the Actions Peoples Party.

According to a reliable source within the Court of Appeal and the National Judicial Council, the panel of judges that had commenced sitting on motions ex parte filed by petitioners is expected to continue presiding over the case when pre-hearing and full hearing sessions begin at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

The Court of Appeal has released the names of the judges who presided over motions related to the 2023 presidential election and may potentially serve on the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) panel. The panel of judges is as follows:

    JUSTICE HARUNA SIMON TSAMMANI

Tsammani (64) from Bauchi State was appointed to the Court of Appeal on July 16, 2010. He served as the chairman of the three-man panel that granted Obi and Atiku’s motions to serve Tinubu their petitions by substituted means. He graduated from the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, in 1983 and started out as a High Court judge in Bauchi State on September 17, 1998.

Tsammani has presided over various election and financial matters as a judge.

One of those cases is a petition filed by the former Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, challenging the judgement of the 2019 Election Petition Tribunal, which on November 19 of the same year upheld PDP’s Kola Balogun as the winner of the senatorial election for Oyo South held in February that year.

Balogun was said to have polled a total of 105,720 votes to defeat Ajimobi, who garnered 92,218 votes, but the latter disagreed and approached the Court of Appeal in Ibadan for redress.

Ajimobi based his petition on the allegation that his PDP counterpart was not qualified to represent his party at the election.

But Justice Haruna Tsammani, who prepared the lead judgement, dismissed Ajimobi’s petition for lacking merit, holding that a person who is not part of a political party has no right to challenge the outcome of its primary election.

    JUSTICE STEPHEN JONAH ADAH

Adah (66) served as a member of the three-man panel that granted Obi and Atiku’s motions to serve Tinubu their petitions by substituted means. He is from De-Kina LGA in Kogi State. He passed out of the Nigerian Law School in 1982 and became a Federal High Court judge on November 12, 1998, prior to his promotion to the Court of Appeal on November 5, 2012.

Adah has passed verdicts on several cases, and one of his landmark decisions was in the appeal filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2020 against a trial court’s decision, which partially upheld the no-case submission filed by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola.

The antigraft agency had instituted $40 million in money laundering charges against him.

But Adah dismissed the appeal, saying the EFCC could not prove the allegation beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The trial court was in order to discharge and acquit Azibaola and his company in counts 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 because offences of money laundering were not sufficiently proved, nor did the prosecution establish any prima facie case against the respondents.

“We have gone through the records and found that the appeal is lacking in merit; the appeal is hereby dismissed and the judgement of the lower court upheld”, Mr. Adah said.

    Justice Abba Bello Mohammed

Mohammed (62) from Kano State was part of the three-man panel that granted Obi and Atiku’s motions to serve Tinubu their petitions by substituted means.

He finished the Nigerian Law School in 1985 and was appointed as a judge of the High Court of the FCT in 2010. After serving for about 10 years, he was promoted to the Court of Appeal on June 28, 2021.

Justice Mohammed presided over the Nasarawa State Governorship Election Tribunal in 2019.

The PDP governorship candidate in the 2019 general election, Hon. David Emmanuel Ombugadu, had sued INEC and Governor Abdulahi Sule of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

But Justice Mohammed dismissed the petition for lacking merit, holding that the petitioner’s allegation of over-voting and electoral violence could not be substantiated.

    JUSTICE JOSEPH IKYEGH

Justice Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh (65), who hails from Benue State, led the PEPT panel that ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to allow Atiku and Obi to inspect the electoral materials used during the presidential election.

He graduated from the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, in 1980 and became a judge of the High Court, Benue State, on March 27, 1991, before his appointment as a Court of Appeal Justice on July 16th, 2010. Interestingly, Ikyegh was part of the 5-man panel that presided over the presidential election petitions in 2019 between Atiku and President Muhammadu Buhari.

    The panel dismissed Atiku’s case.

    JUSTICE MONICA BOLNA’AN DONGBAN-MENSEM

The Court of Appeal president, Dongban-Mensem (66), finished at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos State, in 1980. She was appointed judge of the FCT High Court in 1993, and ten years later, she got into the Court of Appeal (on June 25, 2003).

She is an authority in criminal and civil procedure law, legislative drafting, constitutional law, and administrative law, among others.

One of the high-profile cases she presided over was that of the former chairman of the federal House of Representatives ad hoc committee on fuel subsidies, Farouk Lawan.

Lawan was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on June 20, 2021, by the FCT High Court, which had found him guilty of bribery in 2012 following a three-count charge filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practises Commission (ICPC).

But he appealed to the Court of Appeal.

In its verdict in 2022, a three-member panel led by Appeal Court President Monica Dongban-Mensem said the ICPC did not prove its allegations in counts 1 and 2, which bordered on how Lawan allegedly demanded $3 million from business mogul Femi Otedola to remove his company from the list of defaulters in the fuel subsidy scam.

She added that the trial court’s decision on the two counts cannot stand.

In the judgement, Lawan’s jail term was reduced from seven to five years.

Checks by Ejes Gist News Nigeria showed that aside from Justice Ikyegh, the 5-man panel of justices that presided over the 2019 presidential election petitions have all left the Court of Appeal except Justice Peter Ige, who would be retiring on July 12, 2023, having attained the retirement age of 70.

It remains uncertain whether Ige will be on the 2023 panel, as the Tribunal has a constitutional mandate to conclude election-related petitions within 180 days from the conclusion of the election.

Speculations are rife that Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the current President of the Court of Appeal, may be poised to lead the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT). This is based on the precedent set by her predecessor, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, who led the 2019 PEPT panel. It remains to be seen if Justice Dongban-Mensem will take up the mantle.

The 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal saw the recusal of Bulkachuwa after the PDP filed a petition claiming that she would not be impartial in the case due to her husband’s status as a senator-elect under the APC.

According to information available on the Court of Appeal website, the number of justices serving on the appellate court is currently 77.

The most senior judges after Dongban-Mensem are: Justices Raphael Chikwe Agbo (2), Jimi Olukayode Bada (3), Oyebisi Folayemi Omoleye (4), Ahmad Olanrewaju Belgore (5), Jummai Hannatu C. Sankey (6), Ali Abubakar Babandi Gumel (7), Uzoamaka Ifeyinwa Ndukwe-Anyanwu (8), Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa (9), Chioma E. Nwosu-Iheme (10), Theresa Ngolika Orji-Abadua (11), Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh (12), and Haruna Simon Tsammani (13).

It is highly probable that the selection process for the 2023 presidential panel will mirror that of the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which was composed of five distinguished senior judges from the appellate court, most of whom have since retired and ascended to the Supreme Court.

100 Polaris Bank Staff Lament Unpaid Salaries, Threaten To Shut Down Operations Nationwide

Polaris Bank Limited is facing a challenging situation as reports suggest that the bank is currently embroiled in a controversy over its recent sale by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Speculations are rife that the sale of Polaris Bank may be reversed by the incoming administration of Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, following reports making the rounds.

Shehu Sani Exposes Actual Reason Behind FG’s Decision To Postpone 2023 Census

In October 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria made headlines when it sold a bank for a reported N40 billion. This move was met with controversy, as the bank had previously invested over N1.2 trillion into it.

The recent sale has sparked a flurry of accusations from various quarters, including lawmakers, trade unions, and other detractors, who have labelled the transaction as a dubious move.

Reports indicate that the apex bank has sold the bank to Strategic Capital Investment Limited (SCIL), which is purportedly managed by Auwal Lawan Abdullahi. Abdullahi, who holds the Sarkin Sudan Gombe traditional title from the north-eastern state, is reportedly the son-in-law of Ibrahim Babangida. Despite his limited credentials in banking and finance, Abdullahi has been entrusted with the management of the bank. According to sources, the recent sale of Polaris Bank resulted in Nigerian taxpayers incurring a loss of approximately 97% of their initial state investment. According to company filings, as of December 2020, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) had invested a total of N848 billion in the bank. Insiders have reported that an additional N350 billion was injected into the bank between January 2021 and July 2022.

Reports have emerged that amidst the ongoing crisis, certain customers of the bank, particularly small and medium enterprises, are choosing to withdraw their funds and transfer them to more secure financial institutions due to concerns of potential financial instability.

Reports from anonymous sources within the bank reveal that a number of customers have recently withdrawn their deposits due to concerns over the institution’s ethical practises and significant job cuts. These developments have eroded trust in the bank and left some customers feeling uneasy about the safety of their funds.

According to sources, it has been revealed that more than 100 branch managers of the bank have been suspended without pay for the second consecutive month due to their non-performing loan ratio exceeding 5%.

According to sources, the loans in question were approved in accordance with proper procedures and the bank earned interest on them. According to several managers who spoke with our correspondent, they claim that they were not responsible for booking the majority of the loans in question. Instead, they allege that the loans were referred and booked by higher-ranking staff members who are currently free to move about without consequence.

In violation of labour laws, the bank has issued letters of suspension for a duration of 30 days, exceeding the legally permissible period of two weeks without pay for the affected worker. Following the expiration of the initial suspension period, the affected staff members were left without pay for an additional two months without any further communication from management.

According to some employees who spoke to reporters, the bank’s management has allegedly mandated that suspended staff members report to work every day and undergo daily performance evaluations, with the managing director overseeing weekly meetings that reportedly last well into the night.

Reports indicate that a group of disgruntled bank employees have taken legal action against their employer, filing a lawsuit in both the National Industrial Court in Lagos and Abuja. Several disgruntled employees have announced plans for a large-scale demonstration against the bank scheduled for next Tuesday. Reports indicate that the planned protest is set to take place across the entire nation.

Following the apparent signs of distress in the bank, a considerable number of individuals and SMEs have reportedly opted to close their accounts with the institution and transfer their deposits to more secure banks.

Drug Case: NDLEA discloses its stand on Tinubu as fresh move to arrest him intensifies

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Dino Melaye filed a lawsuit against president-elect Bola Tinubu, but the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) objected.

According to reports, Dino Melaye and the PDP are requesting a mandamus order to compel the NDLEA to detain and charge Tinubu over the allegedly forfeited funds in his bank accounts in the US over 20 years ago.

NDLEA claimed that the application by the PDP and Melaye, as the first and second applicants, was incompetent in its notice of preliminary objection, which was signed and submitted at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 by Joseph Sunday, its Director of Prosecution and Legal Services.

The anti-drug agency also stated that the court should be dismissed because it lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

Neither the PDP nor Dino Melaye, according to the NDLEA, had the legal authority to file the lawsuit.

The agency claimed that the first applicant’s only underlying specific interest eventually turns political.

The NDLEA claims that Tinubu’s investigation and prosecution were intended to disqualify him as a legitimate presidential candidate.

The agency claimed that a mandamus order was an equitable remedy that should only be used in good faith and shouldn’t have any unintended consequences.

The statement read: “The doctrine of judicial self-restraint prohibits this honourable court from focusing on issues with a political tinge or issues intended to achieve direct or indirect political goals.”

It was stated that the US District Court of the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division proceeding served as the basis for the PDP application and that the judgement in the proceeding was rendered “with prejudice.”

“The said proceedings and judgement have no judicial value,” it continued, “and as a result, the claimed cause of action of this suit as constituted is baseless and legally unsustainable.”

In an affidavit in support of the agency’s preliminary objection, Chia Depunn, a litigation officer attached to its Directorate of Prosecution and Legal Services, stated that the NDLEA had a positive relationship with the government of the United States of America as an independent government body tasked with the duty of looking into, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals involved in drug trafficking and other related offences in Nigeria.

It went on to say that Bola Tinubu’s name had never come up in correspondence with the US, “by whatever acronyms or combinations of names.”

Depunn further asserted that Tinubu’s name did not appear in the agency’s radar or database as a suspect in any arrests, inquiries, or prosecutions related to drug or other related offences.

The agency noted that even though it relied on intelligence and information from domestic and international partners as well as public-spirited individuals, PDP and Melaye had not brought any charges against Tinubu regarding illegal drug activities until January 17, 2023.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, Allen Onyema, the chief executive officer of Air Peace, said he was not doing it as a publicity stunt but rather out of love for Nigeria and his country’s people.

“I consider it a privilege for me to be able to do that. It’s not a publicity stunt; I’ve been working to actively unite Nigeria since I was in secondary school. I think we should all take pride in it,” he said.

However he denounced both supporters and detractors who have brought an ethnic slant to thd intervention.

“I don’t want a good gesture to be turned into an ethnic debacle, it makes me uncomfortable to the extent that I might not do this again, because I want to promote unity and not cause disunity,” he said.

Onyema said Nigeria’s ethnic diversity is envied and should be a strength.

“Nigeria is a country of 378 ethnic nationalities which is supposed to be our strength. The diversity we have today is an envy to all. It pains me that we have not been able to weave the country together in over  60 years of our independence.

“(I do)whatever I have to do to encourage people to come together to promote unity and encourage broad nationalism as against ethnic and religious nationalism which we have in this country. That is why I do it. I do it because I love this country and I believe we can be better.

“However, it pains me that my gesture has started causing some kind of problems on social media, people are trying to bring ethnic angle into it.

“Those who are supporting me, the igbos who are rooting for me that an igbo man is going to do this and do that, please stop. Even for other people from other tribes other than igbo who have one or two things to say, please stop.

“It is a Nigerian thing, not igbo, Hausa or Yoruba. I don’t want a good gesture to be turned imto an ethnic debacle. It pains me to the extent that I might not do this again.” he said.

Meanwhile, Onyema also announced that planes will be deployed to Sudan on Friday, as it would take the evacuees who are now on their way to Cairo, two days to get to Cairo from Sudan by road.

“We are planning to deploy on Friday. I wanted to do it today, if possible but I was told it will take two days to get to Egypt from Sudan by road and last night they told me the buses had left. I wanted to deploy this night.

“On Thursday night, I might send out three jets to Egypt. I just pray no country will delay us over flight permit issues, so that we can get there on time and start moving people out immediately. I may send in about three planes at a time.”

Also speaking on some of the challenges faced by the airline industry, the Air Peace CEO stated that he expects that the incoming government will improve the ease of doing business in the airline industry, noting that the current situation is not worth celebrating.

For years, Nigeria has been grappling with a persistent problem of high unemployment rates. Nigeria’s unemployment rate has hit a record high in over a decade, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. As of the fourth quarter of 2022, the rate stood at 35.3%.

The high unemployment rate in Nigeria has been attributed to several factors. These factors including a scarcity of employment opportunities, a discrepancy between the skills possessed by job seekers and the demands of the job market, a struggling economy, and a rapid population growth rate.

Furthermore, the country is facing challenges concerning corruption, insufficient infrastructure, and inadequate investment in the education and training of its workforce.

The Nigerian government has taken several steps to tackle the issue of high unemployment rates in the country. These measures include the introduction of job programmes and schemes, the establishment of small and medium enterprises, and the encouragement of entrepreneurship. Despite efforts made to tackle the issue, the high levels of unemployment in Nigeria remain a critical concern that requires further action.
