Yoruba Youths In Lagos Set Igbo Spare Parts Market On Fire, Shoot Several Persons

Some suspected Yoruba youths have burnt down Akere spare parts market in the Apapa Ajegunle area of Lagos State.

Ejes Gist News Nigeria reports gathered that the Yoruba youths stormed the market around 2am on Wednesday and shot a security guard and two other persons before razing down the market’s facilities.

Protest currently ongoing as Yorubas threatened to kick Igbos out of Lagos

In a video captured at the scene of the incident which was obtained by Ejes Gist News Nigeria, a man privy to the incident said, “A security man and two other guys were shot dead and they have gone to bury them immediately.”

An official of the Red Cross at the scene also confirmed that the market was burned down but he did not provide further information on who was responsible.

Reacting to the incident, an online user, identified as Frazee, said, “Akere spare parts market olodi Apapa is not so big because it’s in a residential area. So you have about two to three Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) members guarding the market at night. Igbos have become a target this period.

“Politicians are really using brainwashed people to forment trouble. Burning people’s means of livelihood just because of a stupid agenda is the lowest. In less than four months, the market will stand again, the people are so cooperative and financially strong.”

“So it is just one security man that secures such a market? The Igbos in Lagos need to be more vigilant and security awake. The enemies of good governance are not going to be taking things easy with them. This is a fight they must win. If they don’t successfully dislodge Lagos from the grip of these evil cartels come next gubernatorial poll, they will all be doomed,” another man, Pierocash added.

This is coming days after Yoruba youths staged a protest in Lagos, demanding that the Igbo people living in Lagos move back to their mother land.

He stated, “It is an understatement to say that Wike was crucial to the victory of our candidate Tinubu. A million times, the governor was instrumental in our victory.

Organ Harvest: I Thought I Was Being Scammed By Doctors – Ekweremadu Tells Court

The trial of Ike Ekweremadu resumed on Tuesday. The embattled former Deputy Senate President, who is facing charges of organ trafficking, on Tuesday March 7, told the court that he thought was being “scammed” by doctors, Ejes Gist News Nigeria reports.

60-year-old Ekweremadu is accused of conspiring to facilitate the travel of a 21-year-old man, David Nwamini, to Britain to use him as an organ donor for his sick daughter, Sonia.

Nwamini, a street trader from Lagos was to be paid up to £7,000 in exchange for a kidney, the Old Bailey heard. Nwamini was promised opportunities in the UK for helping Mr Ekweremadu’s daughter.

Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, 56, daughter Sonia, 25, and medical “middleman” Dr Obinna Obeta all deny the same charge.

The street trader was falsely presented as Sonia’s cousin in a failed bid to persuade medics at the Royal Free Hospital in London to carry out the £80,000 private procedure, the court was told.

Giving evidence at the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, London on Tuesday, Ekweremadu was asked about an invoice for £8,000 he received via his brother Diwe on 8 February 2022.

In his message, Diwe wrote he had received a “huge invoice” from a consultant doctor.

He wrote: “It looks like they’re all out to exploit people’s unfortunate situation,” the court heard.

The defendant told jurors his view was that he was being “scammed”.

Defence barrister Martin Hicks KC asked: “Why not at this stage say we are being scammed Dr Obeta, end of, stop?”

Mr Ekweremadu replied: “My daughter’s life was on the line so if we stop we will be putting my daughter’s life in danger. So we just keep moving. “Everybody was obviously taking advantage of my daughter’s ill health.”

The defendant was also asked about an unsigned affidavit dated 19 January 2022 which was recovered from Dr Obeta’s home in Southwark, south London, which falsely stated that the proposed donor was Sonia’s cousin.

Mr Ekweremadu told jurors: “I felt embarrassed because that’s not true and I told my daughter to ignore the document.”

He added: “I told her not to sign it… If you sign an affidavit you have to tell the truth.”

Asked who created the document, the defendant said: “I have no idea.”

Mr Ekweremadu added his family had written to a court in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, to find the origin of the affidavit.

Mr Hicks told the court: “It’s a forgery.” Mr Ekweremadu agreed. The trial continues.

Governor Umahi under attack for complaining about ‘excess security‘ in Ebonyi ahead of Saturday’s guber polls

Ahead of the governorship election in Nigeria scheduled to hold on 11th March 2023, the governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, is currently under fire over his recent comments where he complained of too many security operatives in the state.

In a trending video online, Umahi was heard complaining about the Commissioner of Police in the state.

The newly posted Commissioner of Police to the state is not doing his work. He has been here before but he’s not doing his work because he’s just sitting on the fence,” the governor said.

“The Police IG had given directives that all the security details must come from the Ebonyi State command, it was also agreed amongst all the governorship candidates that the IG’s instruction should be followed but the man (CP) is sitting on the fence and I’ve told him that he’ll be responsible if anything goes wrong.

It’s because of these excess operatives, that’s why they are being used to rig elections and we have evidence of it.”

Reacting to the governor’s speech, entertainment consultant, Soso Soberekon said, “Police is excess? Politicians with stupid excuses. How will a governor be complaining about excess police security?

Similarly, nightlife celebrity Cubana Chief-priest wrote, “Dave Umahi Dey Accuse Nigerian Police That They Are Sitting On The Fence, So They Are Supposed To Sit With You. His Excellency You Have Done Well For 8 Years, You Have Also Won Your Senate Election But Your Ambition To Indirectly Do 12 Years As Governor By Installing Your Boy As Governor Is Greed It’s Our Dear State Not Yours, The Cars You Bought For Them Is From State Money Not Yours Please Stop The Intimidation & Harassment Of The Police Force & The People And Allow The Will Of The People To Prevail.

@moreephilip added, “Umahi you didn’t buy police vehicles with your money but the tax payers money stop saying you bought them vehicles as if is your money, sometimes politicians behave’s like mini God.

FLASHBACK: Why Lagos is not part of Yoruba land — says Oba of Lagos, Akiolu

Why Lagos is not part of Yoruba land, says Oba of Lagos, Akiolu

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has claimed that Lagos State is not part of Yoruba land.

Akiolu’s statement is coming barely a week after he publicly humiliated the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi at an event.

Protest currently ongoing as Yorubas threatened to kick Igbos out of Lagos

In a statement from Akiolu’s palace, the monarch traced the historical background of the state and why it should not be regarded as part of Yoruba land.

The statement reads: “Coming from the palace, with what I was told by my late paternal grandmother who is a descendant of Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and also reading from factual Historical books, let me share this Knowledge with you all on Eko/Lagos.

“Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast.

“It was a major centre of the slave trade until 1851. Lagos was annexed by Britain via the Lagos treaty of cession in 1861, ending the consular period and starting the British Colonial Period. The remainder of modern day Nigeria was seized in 1886 when the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital due to the struggle of the Bini King.

“Lagos experienced growth prior to the British Colonial rule and even more rapid growth during the Colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 70s, continued through the 80s and 90s till date. Thanks to the Awori’s, Bini’s, Yoruba’s, migrants across the nation and world at large, as no particular group of people can take the glory alone.

“Lagos is made up of Lagoons and creeks. The Lagos lagoon, Lagos Harbour, five cowne creeks, Ebute-Metta creeks, Porto-Novo creeks, New canal, Badagry creeks, Kuramo waters and Light house creeks.

“The Awori’s and Bini’s are known to be the first settlers of the Eko land. The Awori’s are speakers of a distinct dialect close to that of the Yoruba language with a rich Bini mixture. Traditionally, Awori’s were found in Ile-Ife, they were known to be the Bini’s who followed their self-exiled Prince, the first son of the Ogiso (now called Oba) of Benin Kingdom, whose step-mother was after his head.

“The exiled Benin Prince Izoduwa known to the Yorubas as Ooduwa (Oduduwa) was made ruler of the Ife people due to his powers and followers from the Great Benin-Kingdom.

“Izoduwa (Ooduwa) was made the first King of Ile-Ife in 1230 AD. His followers from his father’s Kingdom in Benin are the today’s Awori people who settled in Eko now called Lagos.

“In the 1300, the King of Benin-Empire heard from one of his traders who was a settler in Eko on how the Bini’s were treated by the Awori’s who lived in their area. Upon hearing this, the King of Benin commanded the assembling of a war expedition, led by his son, Prince Ado, which headed the settlement of the Awori’s and demanded explanation.

“On arriving Eko, Prince Ado and his Army were more than received. The Aworis asked the Bini Prince to stay and become their leader. Ado agreed on the condition that they surrender their sovereignty to the Oba of Benin, to which the people agreed. Hearing this, the King of Benin gave his permission for Prince Ado and the expedition to remain in Eko.

“The Oba of Benin sent some of his chiefs including the Eletu, Odibo, Obanikoro and others to assist his son, Oba Ado in the running of Eko.

“From the crowing of Prince Ado as the first Oba of Lagos (then called Eko), Lagos served as a major center for slave trade from which the Aworis, the Oba of Benin and his son the Oba of Lagos and all the children/descendants who took over as his successors for over four centuries supported the trade.

“The Oba of Benin was the head of the Benin Empire which are the present day Western, Southern and Eastern modern day Nigeria. The King never obliged anyone to speak the Bini language as he believed everyone was entitled to their own choice of language.

“The name Eko was given to it by the first king of Lagos, Oba Ado, the young and vibrant Prince from Benin. Eko was the land now known as Lagos Island, where the king palace was built.

“The palace is called Idugaran meaning “palace built on pepper farm” Oba Ado and the warriors from Benin together with the early Bini’s settlers in Eko and the Awori people settled in the southern part of Eko called “Isale Eko”. “Isale literally means bottom “. Must have been used to indicate downtown (as in down town Lagos)

“Until the coming in of the Benin’s 1300AD , Lagos geographical boundary was Lagos mainland, Lagos Island, the seat of the Oba of Lagos then consisted of a pepper farm and fishing post. No one was living there.

“About 1450 AD some Yorubas who hailed from Isheri in Ogun-state and Ekiti were allowed by the King to settle in Eko during a war, they came in a very large numbers thereby surpassing the numbers of the Awori’s and Bini’s. (Hence Yorubas claim to own Eko due to their numbers).

“Oba Ado fell in love with a beautiful woman whose father was Awori and mother a daughter to one of the chief; they had two sons and also a daughter Erelu Kuti, who begot Ologun Kutere who later became King.”

Peter Obi Insists On Inspecting BVAS As Appeal Court Hears 7 Motions From Tinubu, Atiku, LP, INEC Today

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged the Presidential Election Tribunal situated at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, to grant him leave to carry out digital, forensic and physical inspection of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices so as to buttress his claim that the just concluded polls was rigged against him.

BREAKING: INEC asks tribunal to vary BVAS inspection order granted Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar

The court had earlier granted Obi the permission to inspect INEC materials, including the BVAS devices used during the election, but the Independent National Electoral Commission approached the same court to vary the decision.

Obi and LP brought their application on Monday by way of motion on notice, days after the Independent National Electoral Commission urged the Court to allow its officials to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, devices ahead of the forthcoming governorship and state assembly elections.

But as seen on the Cause lists of motions filed so far before the court, there are seven motions the court will be hearing and possibly determining today by 1 pm.

Four of the applications are from the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and his political party, the All Progressives Congress.

In petitions marked, CA/PEC/ 05M/2023, CA/ PEC/06M/2023 and CA/PEC/07M/2023, CA/PEC/08M/2023, Tinubu and APC is seeking an order allowing them to inspect INEC materials as was granted Peter Obi earlier.

They also asked the court to determine their motion based on “urgency”.

Furthermore, in the court’s approval granting Obi and Atiku Abubakar respective permission to inspect INEC materials, the electoral umpire instituted motions against that order.

These seven motions will be heard today, from what our correspondent gathered from court officials and as seen on its cause list.

INEC had alleged that any order restraining it from using the BVAS will limit its ability to conduct the forthcoming governorship and state assembly polls coming up on March 11.

However, the youths refused to listen to him nor allow him to address the church as they repeatedly chanted “Obi! Obi!! Obi!!!.”

The PDP candidate also shared drinks during the visit but the youths threw away the drinks, shouting they do not need them.

In the photo that surfaced, the PDP candidate could be seen on his knees, begging the youths to forgive him and vote for his party at the forth-coming governorship elections.

Big hope for Peter Obi as SENDA demands immediate cancellation of presidential election

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, in the South East under the aegis of South East Network for Democracy and Accountability, SENDA, has added its voice to the call for the cancellation of the Presidential election outcome.

The coalition made the demand at a Press Conference in Enugu on Monday.

It alleged that the election fell short of international standards and was not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act.

The group said the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, failed the nation.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of SENDA, leader of the Coalition, Comrade Emmanuel Acha said that the outcome of the Presidential and National Assembly elections which took place on February 25, 2023, a day that commemorate exactly one year after the signing of the Electoral Act, 2022 as amended by President Muhammadu Buhari has left many with questions begging for answers.

“This is why we are here today to grant this press conference and our demand is that the election should be cancelled and a fresh one conducted,” he said.

Acha said the INEC was unable to fulfil its promises to Nigerians and failed to adhere to the dictates of the Electoral Act, 2022, as amended.

“The Commission has been specifically blamed by stakeholders on issues of logistics; late arrival of poll officials at their voting centres across the country, particularly in the Southern part of Nigeria; failure to transmit polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (iRev); and voter intimidation and suppression among others.

“We hereby agree with various national and international stakeholders that the just concluded elections lacked transparency and failed to achieve minimum standards of electoral credibility,” he said.

He said that Nigerian democracy can no longer be described as nascent, “hence no excuse can be justifiably adduced for the very obvious lapses witnessed so far in our elections since 1999 till date.”

He expressed displeasure that in spite the series of assurances and reassurances by INEC as it relates to the deployment and use of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) as well as the INEC Result Viewing Portal in the general elections, INEC could not conduct a credible poll.

The group urged Nigerians not to be deterred by what happened during the elections, urging them to come out en masse to exercise their franchise during the forthcoming governorship and House of Assembly elections.

They equally called on the INEC to improve on its performance, while urging the security agencies to ensure adequate security for the remaining polls.

“The IReV is one of the innovations introduced by the Commission to ensure the integrity and credibility of election results in Nigeria.

“It is therefore inconceivable that the Commission will turn-around and undermine its own innovations,” they lamented.

Southeast Region to produce Senate president revealed

Ejes Gist News Nigeria has learned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would most likely zone its Senate presidency seat to the Southeast zone.

In light of the fact that the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, is from the Southwest region and the vice-president-elect, Kashim Shettima, is from the Northeast, sources indicate that the Southeast zone has a favorable chance of securing the position of Nigeria’s No. 3 citizen.

This online newspaper reported that prominent southeast APC politicians, such as Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the Abia North Senatorial District and Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, are lobbying for the position.

Some party elders, according to a member of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC), believe that zoning the Senate presidency seat to the South East will create a balance of power.

“Having been excluded from the presidential contest in all parties at a time when the demand for an Igbo president was high, it is in the APC’s best interest to zone the number three political position to the South East,” he said.

The NWC member added, “There is already tension, but the party is committed to reducing it by zoning its offices, beginning with the Senate presidency in the South East.”

This newspaper has learned that arrangements have been made to discuss this matter with the incoming president-elect, Tinubu.
