The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has stepped down the controversial counter subversion bill amidst backlashes.

 

 

The bill had proposed 10 years of jail term, with an option of N5 million fine, or both for any person who refuses to recite the national anthem and pledge.

 

The withdrawal was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by Musa Krishi, spokesperson of the speaker.

“Responding to the voice of people and peoples’ concern, Speaker House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD has resolved to withdraw the Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft bills,” Krishi said.

 

“This follows exhaustive consultations with a cross-section of stakeholders and due consideration of the mood of the nation.

“Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, the champion of people’s interest, who has consistently had his ears closer to the citizens and sets to forge unity, has maturely responded to the plight of the people. His decision reflects his commitment to ensuring that the House remains truly the People’s House.

 

“He acknowledges the weight of the concerns raised and the attention the Bill has drawn towards itself, reiterating himself once again that he will never be party to any action against the peace and unity of this nation.
