ENUGU – Okezie Nwamba, a well-known Ogene musician from Ogui Nike, Enugu, was tragically killed on Thursday in what appears to be a controversial encounter with the Nigeria Police Force.
Nwamba, who had been invited to perform traditional Ogene music at a burial ceremony, was reportedly told to perform at the police station before he could leave.
The situation escalated when officers allegedly shot him multiple times in the back while he was setting up his instruments.

Eyewitnesses report that Nwamba’s body showed signs of up to eight gunshot wounds. Following the incident, police officers transported his lifeless body in a Hilux vehicle to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Enugu and allegedly fled the scene without providing further assistance or reporting the incident.

The police have reportedly claimed the incident was due to “accidental discharge,” though the circumstances and number of gunshot wounds have raised doubts among the family and local community, sparking suspicions of foul play.
Nwamba leaves behind two young sons, and his death has stirred significant outrage, with calls from the Enugu community and human rights activists for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.
