Expert react as Inverter Battery Explosion Claims Lives of Couple.
A devastating incident has occurred in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where an inverter battery explosion claimed the lives of Mr. and Mrs. George Orabel. The tragedy left their three-year-old son orphaned, as he was with his grandmother at the time of the explosion.
The late Mrs. Orabel, Chioma, was the younger sister of popular Nigerian Afrobeat artist Patoranking, adding an extra layer of grief for the family and friends of the victims. The couple was widely respected in their community, and their untimely deaths have sent shockwaves through Abakaliki and beyond.

The explosion has sparked serious concerns over the safety of inverter and solar battery systems, especially as more Nigerians rely on alternative energy sources due to the country’s ongoing power challenges. Experts have pointed to the importance of proper installation and maintenance to avoid such disasters.
Reacting to the incident, Dr. Ejiro Imuere commented, “Inverter and solar batteries can indeed explode if short-circuited. Lithium-ion batteries, in particular, can be highly dangerous if not handled properly. I recommend using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, as they are safer, do not explode, and are not prone to burning.”

He further emphasized, “Solar and inverter installations should only be carried out by seasoned experts, not amateurs. I’m speaking from experience, having worked with solar systems since 2007.”
Similarly, Omajemite Don, publisher of Ejes Gist News, advised that users should prioritize LiFePO4 batteries with built-in Battery Management Systems (BMS) and MPPT charge controllers. He also warned against oversizing solar systems and stressed the importance of setting the voltage appropriately to prevent damage and ensure safe usage.
This tragic incident has highlighted the need for stricter adherence to safety protocols in the growing use of renewable energy solutions, to prevent future occurrences and safeguard lives.
