Tinubu Fears Coup Plot as Nigerian Soldiers Run Oil Bunkering Racket – Asari Dokubo Drops Bombshell (Video)
Asari Dokubo, a former Niger Delta militant leader, has once again accused the Nigerian military of being deeply involved in oil bunkering operations within the Niger Delta.
In a recent video, Dokubo claimed that soldiers are at the centre of oil theft in the region and alleged that President Bola Tinubu is aware of these activities but remains cautious, fearing a potential coup attempt by disgruntled military officers.
Dokubo disclosed that the president specifically directed him to address the press on this matter. “The military is at the centre of oil theft, and we must be clear about this,” Dokubo said.
“Ninety-nine per cent of oil theft cases can be traced to the Nigerian Army and Navy. They fund and organise these operations, offering young boys peanuts while keeping the bulk of the proceeds.”
The former militant insisted that the Niger Delta’s ethnic groups—such as the Ijaw, Ikwerre, and Ogoni—were not the main players in oil bunkering, contrary to popular narratives. According to Dokubo, soldiers pay local groups to carry out operations, creating a network of complicity.

In June 2024, Dokubo had made similar statements after meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. At the time, he emphasised that the military’s involvement in oil theft was an open secret within the region.
During his latest video address, Dokubo suggested that the government’s reluctance to act decisively against military officials engaging in bunkering may be due to concerns about stirring discontent within the armed forces. “Everybody knows what is going on, but because we fear a coup, no one speaks up,” Dokubo stated.
His remarks reflect the persistent challenge Nigeria faces with oil theft, a significant issue undermining the economy.
Meanwhile, the presidency has yet to respond to Dokubo’s latest claims, and no official statement has been released by the Nigerian Army or Navy regarding these allegations.
