ABUJA – Multiple countries, including India, have signaled their refusal to accept several ambassadorial nominees recently approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing concerns over the limited time remaining in his current tenure, authoritative presidency sources have confirmed.

The rejections stem from a diplomatic convention observed by some nations that discourages accepting ambassadors from governments with fewer than two years left in their term. This policy is designed to ensure diplomatic stability and avoid the costly and administrative burden of receiving envoys who may be replaced shortly after assuming post.

Ejes Gist News reports that India has formally communicated hesitation regarding the approval of Nigeria’s envoy-designate to New Delhi, Ambassador Muhammad Dahiru. Under established diplomatic protocol, host countries must grant formal agreement, known as agrément, before an ambassador can assume duties.

A senior official from the Nigerian Presidency, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to journalists, explaining: “They won’t accept an ambassador from an administration that has less than two years still in office.”

The official further revealed that multiple countries are indicating potential refusal of some nominees. Importantly, sources emphasize these rejections are not a reflection on the professional qualifications or personal integrity of the individuals selected, but rather a procedural response to the anticipated short duration of their service.

Timing and Electoral Calendar

President Tinuju recently approved the posting of 65 ambassadors and high commissioners to various countries and international organizations. The list includes a mix of career diplomats and political appointees destined for key posts in Germany, China, Mexico, India, and the United Nations.

However, the confirmation process has encountered significant delays. Reports indicate that only a handful of nations, including the United Kingdom and France, have so far granted agrément, leaving the fate of numerous other nominees uncertain.

The next Nigerian presidential election is scheduled for January 2027, with President Tinubu’s current term concluding in May 2027. This timeline means that if ambassadorial approvals continue to lag, some envoys could potentially serve for less than one year before a new administration potentially replaces them.

Diplomatic Vacancies and Ongoing Efforts

The current situation follows the Nigerian government’s September 2023 recall of ambassadors from over 100 foreign missions. This left numerous diplomatic posts vacant for more than two years before a replacement list was finally submitted to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation.

Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are now relying on established bilateral relationships with concerned nations, expressing hope that diplomatic engagements might persuade some countries to make exceptions to their standard tenure-based policies.

The development presents a significant diplomatic challenge for the administration as it seeks to fill critical foreign missions with substantive heads of mission after an extended period of vacancies.
