Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas and mastermind behind the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, remains at large despite Israel’s concerted efforts to neutralize Hamas’s leadership.

Over the past year, Israeli forces have systematically targeted and eliminated several top Hamas leaders, including Mohammed Deif and Saleh al-Arouri.

However, Sinwar has evaded capture, reportedly using hostages as human shields and navigating through Gaza’s intricate tunnel systems.

Following the attacks on October 7, Sinwar, 62, was last reportedly seen in a black-and-white video captured on October 10.

In the footage, Sinwar, along with his wife and children, was seen carrying a bag allegedly filled with 25 kg of dynamite while surrounded by approximately 20 hostages.

Israeli intelligence has been hesitant to strike, fearing that Sinwar would detonate the explosives and kill the hostages.

Sinwar’s leadership has been marked by his ruthless tactics and his defiance against Israel. Born in Gaza’s Khan Younis refugee camp in 1962, he became involved with Hamas shortly after its founding in the 1980s. He has since risen to the top of the group’s hierarchy, advocating for violent resistance against Israel.

Despite Israeli efforts to locate and eliminate him, Sinwar’s careful planning and use of hostages have made him a particularly elusive target.

With more than 40,000 Palestinians and many Israelis dead as a result of the conflict, Sinwar’s role remains central to the ongoing violence, as he shows no signs of surrendering.

His elimination remains one of the top priorities for Israeli forces, but the challenge lies in neutralizing him without risking the lives of the hostages he holds.

Israel’s determination to bring Sinwar to justice is as strong as ever, but as long as he remains hidden and uses civilians as shields, his capture or assassination presents significant ethical and strategic challenges.
