Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of financial misappropriation during his administration.

Sources within the anti-graft agency disclosed that Okowa’s appearance before investigators on Monday was connected to the commission’s probe into the alleged diversion of public funds while he served as governor of Delta State.

Ejes Gist News reports that the former governor has remained under the scrutiny of the EFCC since November 2024, when he was arrested over allegations involving the diversion of approximately ₦1.3 trillion during his eight-year tenure in office.

The commission is also investigating claims that funds belonging to the state government were used to acquire properties in Asaba, the Delta State capital, and Abuja.

The latest visit to the EFCC office is understood to be part of the commission’s continuing efforts to gather information and conclude its investigation into the allegations.

Okowa, who governed Delta State from 2015 to 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has consistently denied wrongdoing and maintained that public funds were utilised for the benefit of the state and its residents.

Okowa: I’m Not Afraid of Investigation

Speaking after his arrest in November 2024, the former governor expressed confidence in his stewardship and welcomed any lawful investigation into his administration.

“I am not afraid to be investigated,” Okowa said at the time.

“Whatever that is going on, I am not worried. I may not be a saint, but I know I stepped in there as governor with a full hope and desire to help people and give the best for ourselves in this state within the limit of our resources.”

Despite his defence, Okowa criticised the anti-corruption agency for what he described as a media trial, arguing that public narratives surrounding the investigation had unfairly portrayed him before the conclusion of the probe.

The former governor played a prominent role in national politics as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 presidential election, running alongside former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

In a major political realignment in Delta State, Okowa defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 2025. The move was made alongside Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and several political officeholders in the state.

Neither the EFCC nor Okowa had issued an official statement on the latest appearance before investigators as of the time of filing this report.

The outcome of the ongoing investigation is expected to determine whether further legal action will be taken regarding the allegations surrounding the management of Delta State funds during Okowa’s administration.
